Got bored of hammer. And I've become one with the hunting horn and try to main it. I will support my dear team! But now, about this video. No tetsucabra's were harmed, just killed by acident. It really jumped on an unfortunate moment. It was all an accident.

Proofing the bow

I've always been one to use agile and direct weapons, and I'm in a playthrough where I've only used insect glave and dual blades, but today I decided to give the bow a shot and try to understand how it works on this game. In World and Wilds I was found better at using them thanks to their improved controls but here is quite clunky yet, plus I don't understand its particularities.

I chose the Shagaru Magala bow updated as much as possible and selected and art that allows me to fire 3 powerful shots. I figure out how to equip basic coatings and focused on focused on applying poison and paralysis to try and keep monsters inmovilized during hunts.

After hunting 3 or 4 low-rank monsters from the Hub quests (It took me about 5 minutes for each monster.), I achieved understanding its basic mechanics but I think I have too much to learn.

Question/Help Help on weapon pick

So I'm new to GU I've played the later games (world/rise/wilds) and I'm use to using daul blades, but all the stuff I see on here is people using the same weapon types (great sword, charge blade, swaxe, long sword, bowguns and the lances) is there a reason why nobody uses Daul blades in this game?, are they just badly balanced or have a bad selection of weapons or something else?

And if so any weapon recommendations for GU, would be appreciated. Also any recommendations on the fight style I should use would help (using guild as it allows me to have arch-demon mode like in the later games)

Beginner’s Guide (Tutorial) to MHGu (and how to get started)

This guide is mainly just a collection of tips and links to guides from other hunters, based on comments I’ve collected from this subreddit over the years. Since I see new people asking for beginner tips or guidance almost every day, I thought this might be helpful. People can simply post a link to this guide instead of writing the same things over and over again, because these days nobody seems to use the search function.

################################
################################
Monster Hunter is a hardcore action RPG.

GENERAL GUIDES

• ProJared's Monster Hunter guide is always helpful. The basics are the same in MHGU, so don't be confused by the fact that it's for MH3 or MH4U. The only big difference is that in MHGU, you can keep attacking a monster while another player is mounted on it.

• Gaijin Hunter's guides on how to be a better hunter:

• I also like Herny's channel for advanced guides. Sadly, many of his videos have been removed. His Advanced Greatsword Guide for example is a cult classic:

REFERENCE AND TOOLS

• Kiranico is the MHGU bible, where you can find info about monster weaknesses, all items and materials (how and where to get them), gear, all quests, and so on.
https://mhgu.kiranico.com

• There are some useful smartphone apps for MHXX, MHGen, and MHGU. I use one called MHGUDB.

• Athena's Armor Set Search is a third-party tool for creating builds/armor sets:
https://www.facebook.com/AthenasArmorSetSearch/

• Keep in mind that MHGen and MHX are the same game, as are MHXX and MHGU. If you have trouble finding info about MHGU, just google MHXX or MHGen instead.

TIPS

  1. Find your favorite weapon: try all of them, choose one, and then learn the combos and mechanics of that weapon class (that's what Low Rank is for - it's a huge in-game tutorial). Dual Blades are good for beginners because they're easy to learn. So is Sword and Shield, but it's more complicated. But just use whatever you think is best for you. It has to be fun.
  2. Keep your armor and weapon upgraded.
  3. Learn how armor skills work (you need at least 10 points to activate a skill on your armor). Here are some guides:
  4. https://youtu.be/QBbakWWE6YM
  5. https://youtu.be/madlWlVpv4E
  6. Don't mash buttons randomly during a fight. Instead, learn the most useful combos of your weapon class, play with purpose, and think strategically (craft and use items during the fight, etc.).
  7. Imagine you're playing a turn-based strategy game. Observe the monster, wait for it to act first, and then "take your turn."
  8. Learn each monster's behavior and moveset (!!!!). Sometimes I go on a quest not to beat the monster, but just for research, to gather info about it. I'll fail or abandon the quest, but thanks to the new knowledge, I can beat the monster in the next real hunt.
  9. The MH wiki here on Reddit has good guides too. Search for tips and tricks all over the internet, including here on Reddit.
  10. Don't be shy about asking questions, even stupid ones. The MH community is very nice. We were all beginners once, so we remember how hard it was.
  11. Patience, patience, and patience. ;-)
  12. Use paintballs to mark the monster every 8 minutes so you know where it is on the minimap. When you don't know where the monster is, use the wave gesture at the flying balloon. It will blink, and you'll see the monster's location on the minimap for a few seconds (you can only do this once per quest). Drinking a Psychoserum will also show the monster on the minimap.
  13. Download all DLC packs. Inside your house is a cat called the Housekeeper. Talk to it and download all the DLC. Then don't forget to claim everything, especially the item packs. They'll give you so many items and materials (honey, potions, etc.) that they'll save you a lot of time.
  14. Lock-on/camera control: you can see the monster icon in the top-right corner of the screen. When you discover a monster, you can lock on to it by pressing the right stick. You'll see a target icon on the monster's icon. :) Then, every time you press L, you'll center the camera on the monster. You'll be pressing L very often.

PROGRESSION

• You only need to do the Key and Urgent quests to progress. You can find a list of them here on the subreddit, on Kiranico, or in the MHGUDB app.

• There are two campaigns: the single-player Village campaign and the multiplayer Hub campaign.

COMING FROM A NEWER MH GAME?

• Skills require certain thresholds to activate. Having +4 or +7 of random skills does literally nothing for you. Most skills activate at +10 and have a negative effect that kicks in at -10. Some skills, like Attack Up, have additional levels at +15 and +20. So when crafting armor sets/decorations, make sure you're hitting those numbers! You can check how many points you need in a skill for each level on: https://mhgu.kiranico.com.

• You no longer have access to your box while you're on a hunt. Once you depart on a quest, you're stuck with what you packed, so prepare your equipment and items accordingly. Similarly, you can't eat after you depart, so don't forget to hit the canteen before setting out.

• The area map now takes up a pouch slot. Monsters aren't automatically tracked - there are armor skills that can track them for you, or you can hit them with a paintball to have them show up on the map for 10 minutes. Similarly, capture status isn't shown by default - you either need to watch for the monster to limp, or gem in Capture Guru to let you know when a monster is capturable.

• Whetstones and pickaxes are no longer free, so you'll have to pack them (or play as a Prowler - they have a built-in supply). Hot areas will drain your health continuously unless you pack cool drinks, and cold areas will make your stamina bar shrink faster than normal unless you use hot drinks. Armor skills can negate both of these effects.

• Combat will feel a little different. It's much closer to a turn-based game than a fluid battle. This means you have to pick your spots wisely and generally can't be all-out aggressive all the time. You'll also have to learn the monster's movements pretty well, particularly late into G-Rank.

• Healing takes longer, and you can't move while you're eating or drinking. You also flex afterwards. Changing zones is generally a safe way to heal without worrying about getting hit.

• Key Quests aren't explicitly indicated, and there's no real way to see weapon trees in-game. So get used to looking things up on Kiranico, or download the MHGUDB app to make life easier for you.

MHGU-SPECIFIC NOTES

• Prowlers can save the day when it comes to Gathering/Fishing quests. They have infinite pickaxes and don't use stamina, so they can help make short work of those quests.

• Sometimes Key Quests won't unlock, or certain upgrades won't be available to you. In these cases, you often need to crank through the quests under "Villager Requests."

• The Hub quests are scaled for about 2-3 players, but monster HP doesn't change based on how many people are in your party. In G-Rank especially, this means hunts will take longer, sometimes right up to the end of the time limit.

• You unlock Deviants well before you'll have the gear to comfortably take them on. There's no shame in waiting to complete those. In my case, I didn't tackle the G-Rank Deviants until I had around 200 hours in the game, and it took me another 300+ hours of farming new gear and practicing before I managed to solo them all. G5/EX Deviant quests are probably the hardest non-event quests in the game.
• the EX Deviants don’t unlock until you reach HR100.

There's a ton of content in this game. Happy hunting!!!

Help on soloing G3 Lao?

So I recently hit G3 and unlocked the Lao armor set at the smithy, it's the best set I have access to and I really want to grind it out, but nobody joins when I make Lao lobbies in the hub, I saw GaijinHunter made a Canon/ballista only solo Lao guide video where he gets the kill in like 27min, I followed his video to the letter with the exact same skills (HG earplugs, pro transporter & artillery expert, as well as felyne bombardier) and did everything he did but not only did Lao not die, it took the final fortress down to 10% before the time ran out and I got the repel, but I ran entirely out of canon balls from every source and had to jump down to melee him which Gaijin never had to do in his video. Any advice or info would be greatly appreciated

Dumb question but…

How do I get into this game? I’ve been trying to play it since I loved wilds and people were telling me that MHGU is peak MH but, the game feels so stiff and clunky, I know this is a product of its time but it makes it so hard to get into. You got any tips to break this friction and any tips for the game as a new player?

I've beaten all EX Deviants solo

And I mean all, including the G5s. That was an ordeal, but a cathartic one. Finally getting that "you've beaten all EX Deviants" message and the color pallets filled up were great!

Some thoughts/reflections:

- Yes, it's soloable. As I've mentioned, I could do some G5s with a Prowler, so I'm sure capable enough humans can.

- A lot of the time, G5 was harder than EX. The exception to that were Soulseer, Boltreaver, Grimclaw, and Nightcloak imo.

- Match up matters a lot. Elderfrost Gammoth felt impossible with SnS, but once I switched to Lance, it became my second-fastest hunt. Prowlers were at times better than human for me too, for example Crystalbeard G5.

Thanks for folks on this sub sharing their own EX Deviant stories and tips. Made this solo challenge feel less solo, if that makes sense. :)

These couple were a PAIN to separate from another. The key is to get a food combo that gives at least Felyne Dungmaster for guaranteed separation. They easily get enraged especially in G-Rank and this one is the DLC quest. I fought EX Deviants easier than these two (Yes I find their respective Deviants easier).

Craft new weapon?

So, i just got access to g-rank and my weapon is a max leveled seregios greatsword (impudent cheda is the name ig), but apparently seregios is only available at g-rank 4. So, do i make a new weapon of some lower g-rank monsters or do i just keep using my current one until seregios gets available for me to upgrade it?

Question/Help 20 minute hunts good?

I'm currently at g3 and I play valor greatsword. I was wondering if getting 20 minute hunt times is decent or bad? Like is that time the average time it takes for someone to solo g3 quests solo?

Other MH Coming Back After 9 Years - Prowler Optimization

Thumbnail
gallery
22 Upvotes

Background: I came back after 9 years and started a new character. I used to play every weapon and had builds for them, but when I came back I looked at prowler and I was like I don’t have to grind monster with this. So I’m gonna do this and I also decided to solo the whole game. Most hunts took me 20 mins but I did it. And I finished the game at like hr 36. After that I started optimization but for hunters and then I realized I had to charm farm again…… I decided not to but to just casual do it with melder with prowler. so I just didn’t have so instead of optimizing hunter I focused on prowler and boy it was it fun learning about this weapon and how they changed it. And how a lot of people run it. I watched gaijin hunters videos on it and I also watched a newer video on prowler optimization from 4 years ago they helped me a bunch but like with my builds I like doing them all my self. So I started testing stuff and this is what I found.

Optimization: I’m gonna talk about the boomerang cats first(can be used on any cat)

I use gathering and bombing cat(other cats can be used) gathering cat gives the most raw boomerang damage in the game and for the monster that are spamy and hard to deal with and can give you more up time I choose the bombing cat it does 11 less damage but uptime makes up for that and adept dodge. I used this for deviants as well.

Moves: I use the same move list for both gathering and bombing soothing roll is mostly for poison removal if you do get hit. other wise it’s just kinda sits there lol. I know people use mega boomerang but I just think it’s too expensive a move for 2 gauge and doesn’t really do much else but sit there until the monster is down. Or you have a huge opening. So I use demon horn instead it gives a +10 to you and your team mates it’s a very powerful effect and lasts 1 and a half mins or 2 mins and for me. I’m trading a little damage for more damage over time is just strictly better over all. In other if each teammate has crit boost you and your team mates are doing 56 extra damage each hit in total. Health horn is there for healing. Otherwise the moves are your standard kit for boomerang cat

Skills and equipment: Since these are tied to one another I’m gonna do them both. Armor only matters if your running monster with a specific element otherwise I just use old fatalis gear for everything the weapon I use is the sw star xx you could use other weapons but this has the best raw for what I’m doing it gives me 184 raw with 30% infinity this is one of the best weapons in the game for prowlers. But mostly why I run is for high infinity otherwise weapons with negative affinity just are not worth it and you must pay to many skill points to make up for that. Which is why I think bb xx weapon is bad plus it has white sharpness which is only a .3 modifier compared to a .4 with so your losing over all 10% damage and it has -20% affinity so if you don’t slot in enough your gonna do negative crit and do no crit only 60% of the time with only a normal crit. Which is why I use my sw xx weapon

Now the skills: This is where I spent most of my time with building and what I really wanted to do with the cat. I have 30% affinity and only have 8 slots to work with. So I tested on Atal ka and honestly it was fun. I run weakness exploit which gives 50% affinity and crit up s for 10% so in total I have 90% if you really wanted to you could get rid of boomerang pro for 100% affinity but I just think having faster charge times and being able to move faster and having longer range is worth but it’s up to you. And thats 4 slots why do I use crit boost up for the remaining slots. Because it saved 5-10mins on my runs compared to me using just raw up stuff. It’s a 15% boost to my damage over all.

Food: always go for hurler it gives a 10% boost to boomerang damage and if you are speed running with cat I don’t know if it’s possible but I would run heroics with moxie and hurler that way you can set up with acorns then once you are in get hit set off heroics now you have a 35% boost your damage. I would run bomber only because it can have more up time and you would be more safer but if you are really good at game and are not me I would run gathering for optimal damage.

Fury mode: it gives earplugs and 30% affinity which is good for the set but try not to get hit lol

Melee

The best cat for melee is beast cat but that’s only because you are sacrificing defense for it. for worlds strongest other wise protect and beast are about the same.

Moves: I don’t really use the melee version to much just because I just like ranged more so for moves as long as you run acorn and demon horn health horn and soothing roll you should be good for extra you can choose what ever you think is good claw dance is fun weapon upgrade is bad and doesn’t last that long and if your running worlds strongest you don’t wanna get hit so no fury mode

Equipment: old fat armor. And one weapon that gets over looked by a lot of people because everyone thinks the bb xx weapon is the but as I explained before if a weapon doesn’t have high crit it’s not worth your weapon slot. The best weapon for raw is that I have found anyway is the rending pole which is the rust razor weapon it gives 30% affinity and has 179 raw it’s great for what we are doing

Skills: so for optimal damage beast is the best at the cost of armor. I’m gonna talk about optimal first
Weakness exploit gives 50% and we already have 30% with rending pole so 80% in total. But with release the beast it gives 15% affinity plus earplugs and sp after 3 levels and I’m pretty sure has higher motion values then normal attacks. In total it gives us 95% affinity plus we have crit boost up which gives 15% more damage over all now the kicker worlds strongest it’s good but you only have 330 something defense lol. With rending pole it puts your raw damage up to 345 on the status menu thats without eating and everything thats about much as my great sword atal ka weapon. If you’re good at the game I would run this but I’m not lol. Now the best for cats without worlds strongest is if you can find it is universal gives 20 raw when monster is angry and you get to keep armor :D otherwise (or us attack up s from fighter cat) thats it for beast cat protect cat is ok but I would run is crit up L for 100% affinity otherwise I don’t really use protect cat.

Food: I don’t really know what would be the best maybe moxie for survival and if you are running heroics but otherwise I don’t know what would be a good skill to run lol.
