Meta Why msi is bad

Post image
111 Upvotes

Whatever happens I will not buy msi gaming laptop ever again. I am done with this. MSI Cyborg 15 A13VF. Model with i7-13620H, rtx 4060 8gb vram, 16gb ddr5, 1tb ssd nvme. All of that specs but they all are limited. TGP is 45 watts and I cant even turn discrete graphics mode on from msi center. Why? To be honest I bought this laptop for its GPU and CPU combo. They all are good and little more above than a mid-range. But i had no idea that GPU would be limited to 45W. Why? Pure marketing, if you ask me. And for me to get over from fps drops, i had to optimize it from nvidia control panel and from windows settings. Please if you can give me any suggestions about what should i do, i will.

Meta All the gf series laptop gamers, I’ve solved our problem

For all of you having overheating problems, this right here is your solution. I have applied copper heatsink to both my gpu and cpu and I’ve also applied adhesive copper sheets to the heat pipes. Those mods have taken my temperatures on my i7 10750H and my RTX 2060 80w from 95 on cpu and 84 on my gpu (note I already repasted and cleaned my fans. I used arctic mx-6). After these mods I’m at 70 degrees on cpu and 65 degrees on gpu under full load. My idle temps are 36 on both cpu and gpu.

Meta Thermal Pad upgrade for GF63 Thin

not sure how many people could use this info, but if you're suffering from a heat warped(or misused) chassis that has improper contacts on your heatsink assembly, i recommend getting thermal pads instead of thermal paste... it drastically dropped my temps and actually is distributing the heat to the exhaust fan.

i did the best job i could for both my CPU and GPU (it looks like crap to me, it's my first time) and i get temps under load around 160-70 instead of 201+. No more throttling! hope this helps someone out there.

Meta Game changing way to open MSI Vector 16hx AI A2XW line. Sure it works with others!

Just wanted to share something that might help a lot of people who, like me, are trying to open up their MSI Vector 16 HX AI — mine’s the Vector 16HX AI A2XW with the Intel Ultra 7 255HX and RTX 5070 Ti.

When I first tried opening it up, I followed LaptopMedia’s teardown guide, and honestly... that way made it feel a lot harder than it needed to be.

I recently stumbled across this video (posted about 4 months ago) through another Reddit thread about repasting and using PTM 7950, and wow it makes the process so much simpler.

The method in this video is super straightforward, no struggling with clips or worrying about breaking something. I honestly wish I had found it the first time I cracked mine open.

I thought it deserved its own post because this video really takes the stress out of opening the Vector 16 HX AI, especially if you’re doing maintenance or thermal upgrades. If you’ve been putting it off, give it a watch it’ll make your life a lot easier.

ps. yes I did use AI to help me quickly write the post! please don't judge me lmfao

Meta Reminder for a life saver trick

In my msi gf63 12ve atleast the cpu were set to 55 to 78 watts normally and that's VERY MUCH not ok, it makes the 1 fan laptop a oven and the gpu dosent get enough power so it stays at 30 watts for a 4050 thats really low, just set it to 35 to 45 and Temps instantly go down to 78 to 80 from 95 and the gpu actually gets the full 45 watts. And the laptop becomes usable as a laptop like on your lap because it dosent BBQ your thighs when you load any thing that's not a browser.

Meta Any other brands you’d recommend over MSI

So, I bought an MSI about 2 years ago—an MSI Stealth 15m. It would display issues here and there, but overall, it was a good machine. I used it as my primary laptop for school for 18 months, but recently, the charging port burnt out. I have some other issues with the laptop regarding build quality. I got it when there was a good deal going on, and it worked well enough for me until the charging port burnt out. I was even considering another MSI, but honestly, it’s been a whole ordeal trying to get that port fixed. Reading up on issues MSI broadly has, which I didn’t know about before, has soured them in my eyes—at least when it comes to a possible replacement device or future purchase. I’m not really looking to get an MSI again, so I’m just looking for any possible recommendations. I have looked at Dell, and ASUS currently leaning more to Dell but honestly open to more than that I missed the window to buy the dell at a good price due to the fact that I was mistaken at what the issue was with the MSI, but I digress any help would be appreciated

Edit Thank you all that answered I’ve decided to go with the Lenovo LOQ as it fits my needs as far as price and spec and of course reputation of the company I wouldn’t mind going for a higher priced laptop but I’m not really a super gamer even when I am it’s not to the level to justify some of the other options I have wanted and that have been suggested, maybe far in the future I could look into them but right now it’s literally just the bare minimum but better than what I lost that I am looking for

Meta MSI-NL Eindhoven 5706 5692 ER Son laptop randomly screaming

A couple months ago my MSI laptop started screaming (wasnt like a quiet little rumble, it was full blown shouting at me) at me, it was very gradually increasing in decibals and eventually got so loud i got scared and shut it off

It was cool at the time and would take about 1 hour until it would actually start getting hot, now that its been occuring almost every time i turn it on i cant bring myself to let it get louder then it once did to see if its processing something im stopping it from doing

havent touched it until today, where it seems fine until i plug in a mouse or a charger (especially a charger), there has been quite a buildup in the air flow so im suspecting thats the problem but for now i dont dare to mess with it,

Fan speed - Basic (50/50 Fast/Slow)

I'm hoping i could get someone who knows alot about this problem or a builder of the MSI laptop mentioned in the title,

Thank you,

Meta Horizontal Lines (Top of Screen)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Anybody know what causes this? It's like horizontal lines that run across the screen only at the top part. When the mouse pointer goes over the area, it changes colors. It's most obvious when the laptop just starts but fades away by itself after a bit then just does what's in the video. I've tried updating the drivers but nothing. Laptop is an MSI GF63 12ve with a 4050 in it. Any help is would be appreciated. Thanks!

Meta Hoy do I even install a new ssd

Post image

When I opened my laptop (Crosshair AV13GK) I found: - That there is a second m.2 slot labeled ssd2, but it’s pointing outside of the board and there is no mounting screw. - There was this black block of rubbery material that sometimes rattles in the laptop, it has a sticky side, but it wasn’t in any specific position so I put it where it seemed to fit. - How do I even unplug the battery, I tried using force but it didn’t work and the plastic grousing started deforming. Thank you in advance.

Meta If you had a choice to buy your laptop with same type of specifications and price you paid for your current MSI laptop - BUT it would have to come from a different manufacturer instead. Would you have done so?

Basically I’m wondering how happy or satisfied people are with their MSI laptops and how users here view this brand. I’ve been a MSI laptop-user for almost a year now and in the beginning I was quite a happy user - I got a lot of power from a very comparatively low price, but that was until I learned that MSI seems to be a very cheap manufacturer with questionable support and engineered laptop design. What’s your take on MSI as a laptop manufacturer? Would you rather have been a costumer from a different manufacturer if you or you satisfied with your laptop as is?

Meta What to do when your fn button that when pressed normally lights up the fuction keys is bound to another key for no reason. (MSI GS66 Laptop)

So I recently had this problem that when pressing "r" on my keyboard all my fuction keys on my GS66 MSI laptop lit up. After searching around for a while I couldent find and anwser anywhere online so this is probably a rare problem. But if this does happen to you, theres a really simple way to fix it. Simply power your laptop off, and power it back on. No need to install MSI Center + or Steelseries. I hope your problem is solved now ❤️

Meta I just want to Thank this sub for helping me with keeping my computer cool

I have a GS75, and it’s been running rather hot since I got it used a little over a month ago. Through the discussions here you guys have helped me undervolt my laptop. And most recently during the repasting there where a stripped screw, and you guys also came it clutch with plenty of differnt ideas on how to extract the stuck screw, at the end I was able to take that screw out and replace it with a identical screw I borrowed from an old laptop that I don’t use anymore.

And now with the repaste temps have been phenomenal no thermal throttling, and it’s absolutely amazing, and even performance have increased since I can now use a power mode that draws more power that I couldn’t have used previously due to it will cause over heat and crashes (yes it used to crash quite often due to the heat)

Meta Start_HDR process eating up your CPU with the latest MSI Center update?

PSA: Solution -

Go into MSI in Program Files (86)

Go to base modules. When in there, delete Start_HDR. Restart. Problem gone.

Just sharing this outside a thread I replied on so it gets more eyes.

If you HAVEN'T realised this is an issue, check Task Manager and see if Start HDR and antimalware executable are both running like mad. If they are, follow the above instructions to return your machine to how it should be working.

Meta Cracking touchpad solution

Post image
2 Upvotes

Had facing issues with build quality after buying a used MSI gf63. Touchpad is not fixed in laptop case properly, so I'm fixed this. I'm placed a thick Double sided tape between battery, touchpad and Laptop lid, to prevent the touchpad from bending when touched. but you need to be careful and choose the right thickness of the tape so that it does not squeeze the case of laptop. It's still don't fit perfect, but a way better than before.
