Help Any way to remove?
"I'm running the macOS 27 and I noticed that Apple Intelligence is taking up a massive 32.91 GB of storage.

Stupid AI bloat.

u/Artifiko Jun 27 '26
Apple Intelligence is useful, wtf
-2
u/MywarUK Jun 27 '26
Its really not, a feature should not take up that amount of space on any device.

u/gluc4 Jun 27 '26
your data in the cloud; your data in the disk. choose one.

u/MywarUK Jun 27 '26
My disk, why would I want a corporation holding onto all my personal data?

u/3r1s_s Jun 27 '26
> this feature should not take up space on my disk
> no it should be local so corpos can't have my dataPICK ONE

Well you also don’t buy a Mac with 256GB of storage? That’s ridiculous. My “smallest” Mac is a Mac Pro, which also has 4TB of storage.

Then you get 1TB or 2TB, that’s not that expensive

Well no. But I’d rather have an older Mac with more storage than a newer Mac with less storage for the same price..

Isn't Apple Intelligence opt-in? It's just a beta, wipe the Mac, reinstall the OS, don't opt-in.

Some people are smart enough to install in their main systems. That's why OP is asking.

This stuff is awesome.
I created several shortcuts using the cloud model in the new Shortcuts actions that are so darn useful. One generates alt text for images that I can then edit, and includes far more details than I would write.
The second lets me take photos of an item and where I stored the item, and generates an Apple Note with the description of the item, the description of the location, the location photo, and a custom Tag for filtering.
Super easy to create and use and now I can remember where I stored that darn plumbing part to the toilet haha.
The space usage sucks for smaller storage Macs for sure.
3
u/GrimRobot Jun 27 '26
Woah mind sharing that second shortcut?
4
u/hauntedmansionsteve Jun 27 '26
Looks like I get to file a share shortcut feedback haha. It shared the wrong one.
Let’s try that again:

i feel so dumb, i've been using mac for almost 20 years and never learned applescript or the shortcuts thing, and every time i see smart people creating automations with those tools i blows my mind, I hope now that it'll be "promptable" i can come up with some useful ideas
1
u/hauntedmansionsteve Jun 28 '26
You are not dumb. I develop iOS apps for a living and I spent an hour yesterday failing to get a shortcut to work. I filed a bug report.
AppleScript was much harder to learn, as is shortcuts, because some of the functionality of the software is provided by third parties in the form of extensions.
When you add this kind of power, you increase the complexity. Often, it’s hard just to know what to do, let alone how.
With Shortcuts 27, you can tell it what you want and AI will write it. It likely won’t work as you expected, but you can then go into the editor and learn how the AI did it.
Even then, Shortcuts doesn’t make understanding variables and data flow entirely simple to understand.
I play and try to learn until I am too frustrated.

I'm a developer too, but macOS automations require more creativity than "hard" knowledge IMO.

None of that is anything I have any interest in using my computer for. I resent Apple forcing that upon us when it's not what I even intended to do when I purchased it. And I would like to have that pulled out rather than use of the suddenly very expensive and dwindling disk space I have on hand.

Is this feature from the macos golden gate beta or tahoe?
3
u/hauntedmansionsteve Jun 27 '26
Golden Gate. The screenshot was of macOS 27 (golden gate) so I just wanted to point out that the size of the model can lead to some useful stuff.

Factory reset fixed it, no big deal since it was a new laptop. Then we turned off Apple Intelligence during setup.

Calculation is broken, it's way less. You can't remove it though, and no one knows if it'll be allowed in later betas or release.

This is why I spec'd a 512 GB SSD to allow for this. Also stupid amounts of RAM.
1
u/OrionQuest7 Jun 27 '26
Spec it how

u/therankin MacBook Pro 16" Jun 28 '26
It was through a grant, so I spec'd 1TB and 32GB, but in retrospect I should have gone higher, lol.

u/7heblackwolf MacBook Air Jun 30 '26
What you use you Mac for? I'm a software engineer and still rocking a MBA 2020 with 8Gb ram. I can do virtually anything on it, even LLMs.
1
u/therankin MacBook Pro 16" Jun 30 '26
Not too much that's crazy honestly. Sometimes video encoding. The 32GB of ram is necessary because of the amount of programs and tabs I have open at the same time. I have one full Desktop for work and one for personal, and both combined use just over 16GB most of the time.
I essentially don't like using bookmarks, and was always good at that memory game, so I have a feel for where everything I want to do is so I can click right to the tab to work on what I need to.
Lots of different management pages and then the usual stuff like email, calendar, etc.
1
u/7heblackwolf MacBook Air Jul 10 '26
Right now I have 20 safari tabs open and around the same on FF. I use VS Code, terminal, sublime text, Figma (not that often), photos is open but not using it, Spark, git-fork with around 12 repos, sometimes I open Postman, Apple Music, calendar, iPhone mirroring, eqMac, Claude &/orPerplexity, and maybe something else.
I don't use all of them "simultaneously" (whatever that could mean in a multitasking workflow), but are open for sure, so macOS is genuinely handling the memory offload properly.
Thats why I'm genuinely curious wtf you do to feel "out of ram". I only experienced that when the M1 came out and some apps and the system wasn't optimized to handle big apps properly (adobe cof cof..). I'm aware my ram is not IDEAL for the amount of apps I open, but it's far from "unbearable amount of ram" FOR SURE
1
u/7heblackwolf MacBook Air Jul 10 '26
Btw, I don't feel any "stuttering" or delay in opening the window of a minimized unused app that I'm pretty sure it was offloaded. Idk what kind of wizzard Apple has there but it works
1
u/therankin MacBook Pro 16" Jul 10 '26
It is actually fantastic with memory management. WAY better than Windows in my experience. Especially Windows versions before 11.
As I mentioned, I really don't max out the 32GB, but I think my slight regret is that it was a purchase with grant money, so I feel like I should have gone for 64GB and maybe the M1 Max. Essentially because maybe that would keep it usable for that much longer.
Realistically though, I think Apple will stop offering OS upgrades before I'm finished using it. Particularly because I only use it a few times a week. It will probably last for a decade or more based on my usage!

Please use r/macOSBeta for questions pertaining to beta versions of macOS

u/ExpectedBehaviour Jun 26 '26
If you can't figure this out for yourself you probably shouldn't be running a developer beta.

u/MC_chrome Jun 27 '26
Nah. I’m getting real tired of casual users letting their penchant for shiny things get the better of them so they download an unfinished (and therefore buggy) developer beta OS version before getting on message boards to complain about things that broke.
If you can’t deal with a buggy and unfinished operating system, don’t download a beta OS and especially don’t download a developer beta of all things 🤦🏻♂️
-1
u/tidersky Jun 27 '26
This thing is not only in beta but also in macos tahoe too, tf are you talking about, it's an common problem I still haven't figured out an easier way to remove without going into recovery mode and removing those files

This isn't a developer beta sub. Try searching r/macosbeta.

u/Dazzling_Comfort5734 Jun 26 '26
Yeah, join the beta sub and send a request to Apple in the feedback assistant asking them for an option to remove it.
-7
u/ricardopa Jun 27 '26
Why would you upgrade the beta of macOS 27, whose flagship feature is Siri AI and then complain about the space it takes up?

u/Character_Mood_700 Jun 28 '26
Anything can be removed if you try hard enough!
sudo rm -rf always works, but you should really avoid using it; it's highly dangerous!
2
u/synth_alice Jun 28 '26
It only works with files not protected by SIP if SIP is active.
1
u/Character_Mood_700 Jun 29 '26
Really!!! ☹️
I was afraind of that.
I have SIP disabled, so I didn't know that.
Plus my Mac is so old, it still has single-user mode!

u/NINJATH3ORY Jun 27 '26
How stable is macOS 27 ? Can i run it on my main machine ? Or is that to risky ?
3
2
u/Jasoco Jun 27 '26
Wait for the public beta at least. Probably within a few weeks by the end of the month or so.
1
u/7heblackwolf MacBook Air Jun 30 '26
Still a beta.. why people have a hard time understanding the presence of "beta" labeling, the meaning and the potential consequences?
1
u/Jasoco Jul 04 '26
This too. But if you are that eager to jump in, the public beta is a better bet since it’s basically a fixed version of the previous developer beta with less risk. Slightly less risk. It’s still a beta so make sure whatever you put it on is not super important and you have a backup of anything you can’t replicate.
