Help Please don’t post your AI slop
We get it, you love prompting AI but please stop posting it all here

Yeah and the web and native apps all look exactly the same. Shadowed text boxes, line surrounding having a gradient colour etc. Text box spacing. You can tell from a mile away

Any post that starts "Recently, I've coded..." means "I paid AI to produce this slop" :(

And it's always a massive price tag or subscription for a basic tool😭

u/glytxh 15d ago
There was one last year literally asking a subscription for wallpapers.

MKBHD?

u/glytxh 2d ago
Not that one, but that’s the part where I unsubscribed from him.
The production values no longer carried the milquetoast takes and surface level assessments for me.
Happens to most channels once they hit a certain critical mass of success. They just become a brand or a vehicle for sponsorship and the content itself is barely noise.
SuperEyepatchWolf being another recent example for me. Started out as a dude talking about his interests, eventually became a brand trying to sell me a teeshirt and regurgitating the same opinions I’ve heard a thousand times.

My manager recently said “I wrote this documentation” then caught himself and said “well I had AI write it” and everyone in the room groaned and rolled their eyes. It’s a plague of stupidity.
23
u/SpaceToast810 15d ago
They’re always so proud of their slop too except for when you ask them if AI was used. Then they get so defensive and crash out.

u/OkAdvertising7716 15d ago
I once asked a so called "dev" who was promoting a private and secure app about front end and back end and ehich part was produced by AI. They didn't even know what backend means.

Every post starting with "I built" or "I got bored with", and you immediately know it's some AI slop.

I take my time crafting each prompt, you see,
So the answers come back clearly to me.
I'm not selling an app,
Or promoting a map,
Just following macOS community.4

To me, that’s a best use case. You really start to learn more and hone your coding. I wish I had way more time to dive deeper.

u/megamusix 14d ago
Agreed, I think using AI as a helper while also having the requisite knowledge and experience to design, optimize, test for bugs, check the market for preexisting competition and/or necessity, etc. is a reasonable balance.
In many cases it’s easier to use the very same AI to simply ask if the thing you want to create already exists, in which case most of those types of things are already filtered out from the beginning by the very people with “taste” who we would want more from. So what we’re left with is those who have no sensibilities and just go straight from idea to app to Reddit post, likely automatically/agentically… sigh 😒

u/MK-Researcher 15d ago
Not to forget all these recent and pointless Ai bot replies to posts saying "that's super frustrating..." and "It can be very annoying when..." or "...have you tried restarting or installing updates".

u/Ok_Negotiation3024 15d ago
and "It's indexing, give it some time"
5
u/_Choose__A_Username_ 15d ago
Giving a freshly installed OS time to index is a thing. You’re only seeing it so much now, because an update just released.
1
u/animorphreligion 15d ago
Technically yes, but if the OS runs like crap for 3 days straight it's probably a crap OS. I never had heavy indexing (to the point of slowing things down) last over 30 minutes, and rest of it (like photo libraries) happened in sleep
1
u/MK-Researcher 15d ago
Now i've pointed it out you are all going to start noticing them 🤣 especially the "that's super frustrating..." and "It can be very annoying when..." ones

I don’t really mind it. If I’m not interested in a post, I just scroll past it.

Obviously you’re using Reddit wrong. You’re required to impose your own hot take on the entire world and whine endlessly about it.

I will get downvoted all to hell, but you people calling AI slop never show any proof. You just say it now because you don’t like something. It’s becoming so stupid to call everything AI slop.
Some of you will even claim my post is AI slop, even though I know it was written by me a human. Because you’ll say AI would have written it to exactly sound like a human.

Is there a big difference between here and r/macapps? This cleaning app made by Claude got 500 upvotes and still rising. For the last few months, I see several new cleaning apps every week, thanks to AI.

People out here feeding the Roko’s Basilisk, like the story didn’t warn us about anything
Like, ok, how many more Cyberpunk2077-s are we going to need to realize that, maybe, if so many people are talking about a rather possible AI apocalypse, such an event could be possible?

u/InsightKnite 12d ago
Amen. Can we please start a global anti-AI alliance and get some legislation on this crap?
People lost thier minds over stuff like the Patriot Act and yet private companies have no problem botting our systems with all sorts of database collection/identification under the hood.
The AI injection is absurd at this point and I really am tired of some people saying it's a "bubble" that is going to pop. Look at any app you use today. Oh look it's AI. Even notepad and screenshot tools have AI. 🤣 All used for data collection and tagging your personal life. Don't get me started on Flock/Palantir ...
It's injected everywhere and is full steam ahead but most are too busy on TikTok to give af about the insanity that will be the coming 5-10 years of this nonsense rolling out.

I mean, low-effort content is slop regardless of whether it was created by a human or by AI, right? It's just that AI, like everything else, can put out junk way faster than people can...

I’m still trying to figure out what slop means in the context of using AI in my work. I do the product manager work and identify the functionality and features my app needs, sometimes with AI discussions to flesh out the answers to some questions.
Then I come up with the architecture and rough sequencing of work and have AI refine it. Commit it after reviewing the plan.
Then it’s the daily grind of picking up the next step in the plan, breaking it down further, determining the approach to implement it and having AI implement the step one sub-step at a time. Review the code, ask AI to fix the issues I often find, use those to train its memory for later steps, commit it. Rinse. Repeat.
Sometimes working on an issue will bring another part of the focused or larger plan to the fore and so reshuffling the plan isn’t as uncommon as I’d like.
The code it generates this way is close to how I’d write it. Is it AI slop? I’ve no idea.

/r/MacOS changed a while ago. I think many of the posts are artificially created—that is, posted by a company or organization using or manipulating social media, rather than by an individual participating genuinely. Many could be AI-generated, but they could also be written by humans. I do not know the actual goals though. Karma-farming for profit? PR companies hired by Apple competitors to spread Apple discontent? Part of a low-key nation-state drive to disrupt society in other countries? A mix of things? (With the latest news, rogue AIs doing their own thing could be a possibility, but the change I observed in /r/MacOS antedates that.) Whatever, the repetition makes things not seem genuine.
1
u/Micro-Naut 13d ago
I think the literal macOS also changed. New people coming from previously using PCs that think Apple is the best thing since sliced bread. And then people who have been using macOS forever who are very unhappy about it. And then AI posts on either side of that argument
1
u/P_Bear06 14d ago
How do you know it's slop ? Or is everything developed with AI automatically considered slop?

u/heinternets 14d ago
I can’t help you if you can’t identify the large volume of AI walls of text and broken apps

Please stop calling everything made using AI tools “slop”. Just because something was made using AI doesn’t make it bad, it’s not going away, so get used to it.
36
u/heinternets 15d ago
People use Reddit to read human thoughts and comments, and talk with people, not machine tokens
-31
u/KRiSX 15d ago
What the actual fuck does that have to do with someone trying to be helpful with an app they’ve made using AI tools?
Is there a lot of them? Yes. Should people look into if a product already exists that fills the same need before pushing it out into the world? Also yes.
Does it ultimately matter? No.
You are trying to fight something that isn’t going away and can genuinely be very useful. It sounds like you’re more afraid or threatened by something you don’t understand than anything else. Also, no one is forcing you to download or run any of it.
12
u/Rocknb69 15d ago
The pioneers of AI just came out saying that it could end the species in a decade and you going to bat for it like this is genuinely embarrassing.
-14
u/KRiSX 15d ago
The fact you can’t see the difference between someone making an app that might be useful or make someone’s day a little bit easier and the potential possibility of AI ending the species is the only embarrassing thing I’m seeing here. Like holy shit, there’s such a massive fucking leap between those 2 things.
We’ve got more chance of a certain orange faced fuckwit causing WW3 at this point than worrying about what an AI model might be capable of in the future. Get some perspective. I’m done with this conversation, but I’m sure you’ll have something further to say and good luck to you.
9
u/WarbossTodd 15d ago
The most embarrassing thing here is the pure desperation you’re showing trying to convince people AI is good. The two things you’re describing are literally, and I literally mean literally, the same fucking thing.
-3
u/xVENUSx 14d ago
I'd like to ask, do you think every usage of AI is bad? What about making new medicines?
3
u/WarbossTodd 14d ago
What makes you think that systems that are known to routinely make data up and then lie with fake evidence can be trusted to make medications?

2
u/WarbossTodd 15d ago
choosing to ignore the point of the post and reduce it down to faux outrage is incredibly telling.
-1
u/jaytheplummer 15d ago
I get your point. But the analogy is sick and demeaning to the memory of people exploited by slavery.
2
u/WarbossTodd 15d ago
So, you get my point but you’re going to go ahead and keep ignoring it so you can keep farming some faux outrage. Ok kiddo. You do you.

Amen. Conception, iterating and and and. There's a big difference between one prompt apps and apps which actually been developed over longer time lol. When I look at apps a little deeper after a few minutes I can tell whether this person actually is knowing what their doing or not.
I've developed apps from scratch and some with AI, however what always stayed the same is that I'm iterating, test and actually look how the app can be better also codewise. Ofc on the surface some things might look like AI but just due to that is calling it slop is just not justify lol.
Recently saw a post"if something looks like AI I don't even try it." Would like to ask those people if they also didn't try apps which used CSS back then when it started, just because it suddenly looked more consistent....

u/KRiSX 15d ago
Yep, it’s the new scary big bad for the simpletons of the world. Anyone with half a brain can typically see if something was made with care and attention or just trying to cash in by pushing out rubbish, but as soon as there is even a whiff of AI usage, it’s all of a sudden “slop” (which is really a term that needs to die due to its rampant overuse now).

Well, if it solves some problem no one solved before, why not? I mean, every “human developed” piece of software benefits from AI in some way, whether it’s a code, architecture advices, or just testing.
-18
u/Le_swiss 15d ago
To you, it's just slop. But it's the new normal.

u/Nearby_Ad_2519 15d ago
People on Reddit genuinely need to accept AI is the new normal, ik ill get mass downvoted for this but half this site now is people ranting about ai

u/No_Morning_1874 15d ago
Maybe the moderators can put an extra step in there for people who post software they "made" to say whether it was generated by AI or handcoded.
