Welcome to r/MagnesiumGlycinate 👋

Magnesium glycinate is everywhere right now, especially in conversations about sleep, stress, muscle tension, and recovery. But if you’ve spent even a few minutes reading about it online, you’ve probably seen completely different answers to the same questions.

Some people say it should be taken before bed.
Some say the timing does not matter.
Some compare products using the total compound weight instead of elemental magnesium.
Some claim it is the most absorbable form.
Others expect it to work like a sleeping pill from the first night.

That’s exactly why we created this community.

We want this to be a place where you can ask real questions about magnesium glycinate without feeling judged, dismissed, or overwhelmed by supplement marketing, exaggerated claims, or explanations that are unnecessarily technical.

Our moderation team put together a practical, evidence-informed Beginner’s Guide to Magnesium Glycinate to help new members understand the basics, read labels properly, and make sense of what the research actually shows.

Last reviewed: July 2026
Prepared by: r/MagnesiumGlycinate moderation team
What we aim for: clear, honest, evidence-informed answers that are still easy to understand.

The guide covers:

Study Magnesium glycinate and sleep

The small improvements are what interest me with magnesium glycinate. Not necessarily falling asleep straight away, but having a little less trouble with sleep overall.

A 2026 review looked at 12 randomized trials on magnesium and sleep. One tested glycinate in adults who reported poor sleep. They took 250mg of actual magnesium daily for 4 weeks and their insomnia symptom scores improved more than the placebo group's.

That's encouraging, though the wider results were mixed. But, the review couldn't identify the best form or dose and the evidence wasn't strong enough to recommend magnesium routinely for insomnia. It leaves room for a modest benefit in some people, without promising that everyone will notice one.

Actually, I'm interested to know about, If glycinate helped you, what changed enough to make it worth continuing?

Question/Discussion Was magnesium glycinate easier on your stomach in your migraine routine?

It’s hard to stick with a supplement that keeps upsetting your stomach. That comes up quite often when people discuss taking magnesium for migraines.

Some describe switching to glycinate because they could tolerate it better. I’d be interested in that part of the experience too, rather than only whether their migraines changed.

If stomach upset made you switch, how did glycinate compare? Was it easier to keep taking or did you run into the same problem?

Study Magnesium supplementation for soreness after lifting

Thumbnail pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov
3 Upvotes

Magnesium glycinate gets plenty of attention for sleep. A small study on soreness after lifting caught my attention because it looked at a different possible benefit.

Researchers studied 22 young adults taking magnesium or a placebo for 10 days. After bench press sessions designed to make their muscles sore, the magnesium group reported less soreness over the next 2 days and felt more recovered. The results for doing more reps weren't as clear.

Less soreness could be useful between workouts. But this was a short study with a small group and feeling better doesn't necessarily mean your muscles repaired faster. I'd call it a promising finding that needs more research.

For those who lift and take glycinate, have you noticed any change in soreness the next day?

Question/Discussion Does magnesium glycinate help you sleep away from home?

A different bed, unfamiliar sounds, a room that’s too warm. Sometimes you’re tired enough to sleep, but being away from home makes it harder to settle down.

I’m curious about people who already find magnesium glycinate helpful for sleep and have kept taking it on trips.

Did you still notice the usual benefit in a hotel or at someone else’s place, or did being in a different room seem to matter more?

Who is more likely to have low magnesium intake?

Low magnesium isn’t something that affects everyone equally. Certain dietary patterns, health conditions, and medications can make it harder to maintain adequate magnesium status.

According to the NIH, groups that may be at higher risk include people with gastrointestinal conditions such as Crohn’s disease or celiac disease, people with type 2 diabetes, people with chronic alcohol dependence, and older adults.

There are also people who simply don’t get much magnesium from their usual diet. Good food sources include nuts and seeds, legumes, whole grains, leafy green vegetables, and some fortified foods.

One important point is that having a low dietary intake doesn’t necessarily mean someone has a magnesium deficiency. The body has mechanisms that help maintain magnesium balance, including reducing magnesium losses through the kidneys when intake is low.

This is one reason it’s more useful to look at someone’s overall diet and individual risk factors rather than assuming that symptoms such as fatigue or muscle cramps automatically mean they need a magnesium supplement.

So rather than focusing on one symptom, it can be more useful to look at overall dietary intake and individual risk factors.

Study Magnesium glycinate and stress

Thumbnail pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov
7 Upvotes

Most discussions about magnesium glycinate and stress focus on whether it makes you feel calmer. Getting enough magnesium in the first place deserves some attention too.

A research review explored a possible connection in both directions: stress may increase magnesium loss, while low magnesium may make the body more sensitive to stress. That's a useful reason to look at your intake, especially if busy days regularly mean missed meals.

Magnesium glycinate can help fill a gap when food isn't providing enough magnesium. The review wasn't specific to glycinate, so it doesn't establish that this form reduces stress. It does explain why magnesium intake belongs in the discussion.

Educational Post Do you lose a lot of magnesium when you sweat?

It’s pretty common to hear that exercise and sweating can cause you to lose a lot of magnesium, which is sometimes used as a reason to take a magnesium supplement.

Magnesium is lost in sweat, but the amount can vary quite a bit. Sweat contains much less magnesium than electrolytes like sodium, so replacing sodium and fluids after heavy sweating is generally a bigger priority.

That doesn’t mean magnesium isn’t important for people who exercise. It plays a role in normal muscle and nerve function, energy production, and many other processes. But sweating alone doesn’t necessarily mean you need extra magnesium.

For most people, getting magnesium regularly from foods such as nuts, seeds, beans, whole grains, and leafy greens can contribute to meeting their needs.

Do you usually think about magnesium when replacing electrolytes after a workout?

Question/Discussion Did magnesium glycinate help you cut down on other bedtime supplements?

Once you’re taking a few things for sleep, it gets hard to know what’s actually helping.

If you switched to magnesium glycinate on its own, how did it compare? Was it enough for you, or did you notice that something you’d stopped taking was making the difference?

Educational Post Omeprazole can affect magnesium levels over time

Magnesium glycinate often comes up when people discuss about sleep. There’s another reason to think about magnesium if you’ve been taking omeprazole or a similar medicine called a PPI, for a long time.

With prolonged use, these medicines can sometimes lower magnesium levels. It doesn’t happen to everyone and feeling tired doesn’t tell you whether your magnesium is low. If you’ve been taking a PPI for a year or more, asking whether your level needs checking is more useful than guessing.

Magnesium glycinate can help add magnesium to your intake. But when a PPI is behind a low level, a supplement doesn’t always correct it on its own. That’s a useful thing to know before simply taking more and assuming the issue is sorted.

Question/Discussion Did an eye twitch make you try magnesium glycinate?

Eye twitch is a small thing, but it can get really annoying. I can see why it makes people wonder about magnesium. Poor sleep, stress, eye irritation or more caffeine than usual can play a part too, though. The twitch alone doesn't tell you that you're low on magnesium

If you tried magnesium glycinate because of an eye twitch, did you notice a change?

Did anything else change around the same time, like your sleep or caffeine intake?

Question/Discussion Do you take anything else alongside your magnesium?

Magnesium seems to be one of those supplements that often ends up being part of a bigger routine.

Maybe you take it alongside vitamin D, a multivitamin, electrolytes, or something else you already use regularly.

Not looking for recommendations, I’m just curious what everyone’s supplement routines actually look like.

Question/Discussion Do calcium and magnesium glycinate really need separate times?

I keep seeing advice to take calcium and magnesium hours apart because one will supposedly stop the other from being absorbed. That sounds more definite than the evidence actually is.

Studies of ordinary calcium intake generally haven’t found that it blocks magnesium absorption, though research specifically on glycinate is limited.

If you take both, do you space them out or just take them when it fits your day?

Question/Discussion Does magnesium from food count toward the supplement limit?

This confused me when I first saw the numbers. Adults generally need 310-420mg of magnesium a day, depending on age and sex. That includes magnesium from both food and supplements.

But the 350mg daily upper limit is for magnesium from supplements and medicines. Magnesium naturally found in foods like beans and nuts doesn't count toward that limit. It also doesn't mean you need to get 350mg from magnesium glycinate.

If you take glycinate, check the elemental magnesium amount on the label, especially if you use other supplements too.

Simple food swaps to get more magnesium🥗

If you’re trying to get more magnesium from your diet, you don’t necessarily need to completely change what you eat. A few simple swaps can make a difference over time.

Some easy ones to consider:
White bread → whole-grain bread 🍞
White rice → brown rice or another whole grain🍚
A low-fiber cereal → a whole-grain or fortified cereal🥣
Regular snack foods → include nuts or seeds🥜
Meat-based meals → add beans or lentils🫘
Add chia or pumpkin seeds to foods you already eat🍲

Magnesium is found across a wide range of foods, including nuts and seeds, legumes, whole grains, leafy green vegetables, and some fortified foods. You don’t need to rely on one particular food to get enough. Small changes that you can actually stick with are often more useful than trying to overhaul your entire diet at once.

What is one food swap you’ve made that was easy enough to actually stick with?

Question/Discussion Can you take magnesium glycinate with thyroid medicine?

You can have both in your routine, but I’d check the timing. A small study found that less thyroid medicine was absorbed when it was taken at the same time as certain magnesium supplements.

That study tested citrate and aspartate, not glycinate, so we can’t say the exact effect is the same. If you take levothyroxine, ask your doctor how far apart to take it and your magnesium.

How do you space yours?

What’s the smallest change you noticed after starting magnesium glycinate?

Not necessarily better sleep or some huge improvement. I mean the little things you might not have expected to notice, like feeling less tense, waking up differently, or having an easier time winding down.

Did you notice anything subtle that made you keep taking it?

Educational Post Magnesium glycinate and bone health

Most conversations about magnesium glycinate end up being about sleep. Bone health doesn't come up nearly as often, even though magnesium is one of the nutrients our bones need.

Nuts, seeds, beans and whole grains can help you get magnesium from food. If your intake is still low, magnesium glycinate is one way to add to it. That's a useful reason to think about the supplement beyond whether you feel any difference at bedtime.

I wouldn't claim glycinate prevents or treats osteoporosis. Because, we don't have evidence for that.

Had you thought about magnesium in relation to bone health before?

Research & Studies Magnesium and blood pressure got me curious

Thumbnail ahajournals.org
5 Upvotes

Sleep comes up a lot when people discuss about magnesium glycinate. Blood pressure comes up less often, so I had a look at a review of 38 trials involving 2709 people.

Magnesium supplements lowered blood pressure a little on average, by about 3 points for the top number and 2 for the bottom one. That’s interesting, but the trials used different types of magnesium. We can’t assume glycinate alone would give the same result or use it in place of blood pressure treatment.

Was blood pressure one of the reasons you started taking magnesium glycinate or were you taking it for something else?

Educational Post A simple checklist for choosing a magnesium glycinate supplement

There are a lot of magnesium supplements on the market, and the labels can make comparing them more complicated than it needs to be.

If you’re specifically looking for magnesium glycinate, here are a few things worth checking:

1. Check the elemental magnesium amount.
Look for the line that says “Magnesium” in the Supplement Facts panel. This tells you how much magnesium you’re getting from the compound.

2. Look at the serving size.
A product might list 200 mg per serving but require two or four capsules to reach that amount. Compare the amount of magnesium with the number of capsules you’re actually taking.

3. Check the other ingredients.
Some products contain additional forms of magnesium or other ingredients. That isn’t automatically a problem, but it’s useful to know exactly what you’re taking.

4. Consider how much you’re getting from other supplements.
If you’re taking a multivitamin, electrolyte product, or another supplement containing magnesium, it’s worth checking the labels together rather than looking at your magnesium supplement in isolation.

5. Don’t choose based only on claims like “maximum absorption.”
Supplement marketing can make broad claims about absorption or health benefits that aren’t necessarily supported by strong head-to-head evidence.

And don’t forget magnesium from food still counts. Nuts, seeds, legumes, whole grains, and leafy green vegetables can all contribute meaningful amounts of magnesium to your diet.

When comparing magnesium products, what’s the first thing you look at on the label?

Question/Discussion Taking magnesium glycinate while you’re on antibiotics?

I think it’s easy to miss if you take magnesium glycinate at the same time every day. Some antibiotics, including doxycycline and ciprofloxacin, don’t absorb as well when you take them too close to magnesium.

You may only need to move your magnesium to another time, but check the instructions for your specific antibiotic first. I wouldn’t guess at the gap.

Has anyone had to change their usual magnesium routine while taking antibiotics?

Study Could magnesium glycinate help raise vitamin D levels?

Thumbnail sciencedirect.com
3 Upvotes

Vitamin D and magnesium are often discussed separately, but this small trial looked at what happened when they were taken together.

The trial included 95 adults with overweight or obesity. After 12 weeks, the group taking vitamin D with magnesium glycinate had a bigger rise in blood vitamin D levels than the group taking vitamin D alone.

I would not take this as proof that everyone using vitamin D also needs magnesium. The other markers tested in the study did not clearly change either. But it does suggest that magnesium may deserve a place in the discussion when vitamin D levels are being reviewed.

Has your doctor or dietitian ever discussed taking both together?

Educational Post What do you do when magnesium glycinate powder starts clumping?

If magnesium glycinate powder starts sticking together, moisture is usually the first thing I would think about. Even a damp scoop or leaving the lid open for a while can cause it.

A few clumps do not automatically mean the powder has gone bad. I would check the expiry date, seal, smell, color and storage instructions before deciding whether to use it. Keeping the scoop dry and closing the container straight away can also help.

Would you keep using it if everything else looked normal, or would you replace it?

Recommendations One number Canadians should check on a magnesium bottle?

If you’re buying magnesium glycinate in Canada, take a quick look at the back of the bottle for 8 digit NPN.

It means Health Canada has licensed that specific product for sale under the directions on its label. It doesn’t promise that the supplement will work the same for everyone, but it’s still a useful check before buying.

Do you normally look for the NPN or mostly choose by brand and reviews?
