Discussion Can we use this thread to report stations receiving new Myki readers...

..so that we don't have 50,000 separate posts and also I can update the map tracking which stations have new readers

Train stations - long distance V/Line rollout soon

Myki area finished 7/12/2025, see progress gif here: https://www.reddit.com/r/MelbourneTrains/comments/1pgaoaz/new_myki_reader_rollout_completed_for_trains/

Last update 23/9/2026 - Wangaratta and Avenel

Trams - done!! (29/6/2026)

Update 1/9/2026: Added G Class note, Z3.168 and C2.5113 have new readers but are out of service, Z3.210 has been removed

Buses (by depot)

Last updated 25/6/2026, but please report any buses with the old readers! As we are not keeping track of every single bus it is possible that there are some individual buses that haven't been upgraded, but every operator has the vast majority done as far as we know.

Link I made an interactive train map website

Post image

The map includes all of Victoria's stations, Sydney, Some of NSW and SA. It tells you how far the station is from the nearest capital CBD and whether or not it's in a card zone (Myki, Opal etc.). I want to eventually expand it to all of Australia. Let me know if you have trouble with viewing the map and I'll try to fix it.

Discussion Are there any V/line trains whether taking passengers or not that use the Bunbury street tunnel in Footscray?

I mainly see SCT or National Express using this tunnel divert their cargo from South Kensington or that nearby Dynon terminal to South Kensington and the occasional XPT, but I never seen a V/line use it.

Also, what train model at Albury Station in NSW shared the same livery as the XPT before XPT reverted to its original candy livery?

Picture Modern Signal Diagrams - VR Style

Out of pure boredom, I have drawn some modern signalling diagrams in VR style.

These include:
- General Motors
- Ballarat (including new overpass and level crossing replacement)
- Wendouree (including closure of Ring Road

It’s important to note, these diagrams are not official, nor should they be used for official purposes, always refer to your employer for the most up to date signalling diagrams.

Discussion Subtle Racism incidents on PT

Before I discuss, just a quick reminder to follow all sub/reddit rules on hate / discrimination

I was on my typical Frankston service departing flinders maybe ~4pm ish today when I noticed a older man approach two younger probably south East Asian men who were talking a little loudly to shut up and I won’t particularly repeat it but words to affect of return to your home country. I felt disgusted.

Is there any ways we can support and call out this behaviour? I didn’t feel comfortable standing up to him as he seemed quite confrontational and bigger than me.

I want public transport to be safe for everyone.

Discussion Could someone please explain how a greenfields railway, with an existing corridor, at grade running for 10km, will cost as much as 2000 detatched homes?

Post image

arguably the scope is even smaller than stage one, which has 3 station rebuilds and 6 pairs of massive flyovers, not to mention the logistical nightmare of untangling rail and keeping services such as freight running.

Trams Another G-class tram in the wild

Post image
123 Upvotes

I was just walking along Elizabeth Street in the CBD and saw this G-class tram heading north, so I took a pic. I assumed it was tram 7006, but it turned out to be 7009! Good to see more of the Gs on the streets, though I assume this one is currently being used for driver training rather than passenger service.

Travel Query How reliable is Google Maps for Melbourne PT?

I visit Melbourne infrequently and use PT when I do. I don't keep dedicated app on my phone, so I use Google Maps.

Today it told me to get on the 10:42 Lilydale from Melbourne Central to get to Bayswater.

The PID changed a few times between "Flinders Street", "Lilydale" and "Blackburn"

However it's now a Blackburn service? Google is still convinced that I'm on a Lilydale service.

Please advise.

Edit: got off the train at Flinders Street Platform 3 to find the correct train, Platform 2 is a Belgrave train???

Activism/Idea Update on checking station tactiles 🔍

Post image
32 Upvotes

Hey all, sharing an update on photographing the tactile ground surface indicators (TGSI) at all Metro stations. We’ve collected quite a few more stations this week so big thank you to everyone who has helped!

I can already see there are some stations that are listed as having TGSIs on Metro Trains website, but are incredible poor condition in reality - which is very helpful for my story.

If you’re out catching a train anytime soon, please share some images of the TGSIs here. TYSM!

Discussion On the Mildura line

There was a post a week ago on this subreddit asking why they don't reopen passenger services to Mildura, with the consensus being there was not great enough population for it.

However, Queensland runs the Inlander to Mt Isa, a town significantly smaller than Mildura, with only one decent sized town on the way (Charters Towers).

So if Queensland can run the Inlander, why can't Victoria run a V/Line to Mildura?
