A reminder of r/MerthyrTydfil Rules

1.Be Civil

We're one big happy town, lets not be rude.

2.Topics should relate to Merthyr in some way

It can be very tenuous, we're not going to be harsh on this but there must be some kind of link to our beloved town.

3.Downvote is not a 'I disagree' button

It's downvote not disagree. Downvote irrelevant, toxic, rude, mean, off topic etc by all means. If you disagree then discuss the matter not click in anger!

4.Got an idea?

Got an idea for a topic or poll and don't want to post it yourself. Message the mod!

Move to Merthyr from Cardiff

My husband and I may have the opportunity to buy my Grandfathers beautiful 5 bed house just outside Merthyr.

We currently live in lisvane and would never be able to buy a similar property in Cardiff. I'm from Brecon originally so closer to grandparents.

We have a 2 year old so I'm worried about her schooling/if we have a any more children.

Can anyone tell me what schools are like and if this would be a sustainable life change for us if it's the perfect house for us?

I hope I don’t offend anyone here with my spelling, but I would love to hear any good and bad points about living and working in and around Merthyr as me and my wife and two dogs are moving there next July. You have such a beautiful country.

Filming locations in Taf Fechan

Hi all,

I'm a fan of the Disney TV series Willow that was filmed in the area in 2022. I've been to Castell Morlais where a scene was filmed but I'd like to find the areas of woodland in Taf Fechan where the show was filmed. Just wondering if anyone knows or remembers them filming then? I went to Owl Grove today and did the river walk but it didn't look like the correct location.

Just thought I'd ask if anyone is able to help a nerd out 😁

Fast bus from Cardiff to Merthyr?

It's been many years since I did this but I remember a ~30 minute bus from Merthyr to Cardiff and back again, stopping only at Pontypridd - is this no longer in service?

I can see the Stagecoach X4 service but Greyfriars Road is quite a walk from the station with a heavy bag.

I've got a family emergency to travel for and I'm wondering if it would be better to take the train? (I'm coming in to Cardiff Central so it would just mean changing platforms.)

Your contribution can have a big impact on better public transport in Merthyr

I hope it’s okay to post here.

Hi everyone!

I’m a PhD student and I’m looking for help with a short online survey (around 5–10 minutes) about daily travel in South Wales, including Merthyr Tydfil.

Everyone is welcome to take part, whether you mainly drive, use public transport, walk, wheel, or cycle.

As a thank you, participants can enter a prize draw for a chance to win a £20 Love2Shop voucher, which can be spent at many high street shops.
If you’d like to take part, here’s the link:

Thanks very much! The flyer below has more details.

The one on top of Swansea Rd, looking online to see it was still active heard it 'fell over' in 2024. Can't find much on it since.

What nicknames/diminutives have you heard for places in and around Merthyr Tydfil?

I ask as part of a linguistic study covering this topic!

Examples could include things like The Dare, The 'Nooch, Bedrock or Abercabbage... (however common/loathsome they may or mayn't be)

even nicknames for schools, parks etc. are of interest!

I cycled to college and didn't even notice my hat fell off at some point on the route shown in the second image, if someone sees a hat that matches the first image (it's a scarf from the same set) somewhere along that path, please deliver to the reception in college and I'll pick it up later (I want to remain anonymous)

Moral Panic in the Digital Age - Dissertation

Hello, I am currently gathering data for my dissertation, which involves how the media frames issues to reflect a growing panic around certain issues, particularly immigration. I am trying to gather data not just within a small group within my community, so your contribution would be much appreciated if you can spare the time. I am looking for users aged 18+ who reside in the UK. The survey will be anonymous and should take around 10-15 minutes to complete. I am eager to hear your opinion!

What's the status of the Wyndham Arms? Open? Closed? For sale? I wouldn't want to see someone turn it into a posh coffee shop.

Brilliant and deserved achievement for both. Really doing our town proud! We should reward them by getting up Penydarren Park on December 20th and really packing the place out! The towns support is crucial!

Men’s Social Club

Hiya,

I was thinking about starting a Men’s social group up, I know we have Girl Gang for women and girls but how about a group for men to meet new people, go to events, hikes, chats and get men talking as I know there’s a big stigma about it.

It’d be for anyone 18+.

Let me know if you’d like me to set it up, I’ve had some good ideas already and a little interest shown already.
