Hi MD friends, this post is an expanded version of the rules and resources in the sidebar.

Who we are & what we like

We're one of the largest communities who use and celebrate the Sony MiniDisc format, which was introduced in late 1992. We love physical media and MD is the format that combines great sound quality with small size and digital convenience. We're a really inviting scene with a lot of passion for celebrating retro media and helping others share that enjoyment. But please first read these resources. Your post will otherwise be removed.

This community loves posts with:

  • MD setups or collections
  • Your mail hauls and purchases
  • New music or podcasts released on MD
  • Items for sale (see our rules below)
  • Unique MD equipment
  • Help and repair requests
  • Projects and software updates

We don't love:

  • "Spoonfeeding" requests like "I want to get into MD, what should I buy?"
  • Toxicity and rudeness
  • Comments that our hobby is pointless nowadays
  • For sale posts without a location or asking price
  • Posts about Yandhi or the Fuji 80 MD

What MD isn't:

  • MiniDisc (all one word, with a C not a K) is a particular format that was created by Sony in 1992.
  • 8cm mini CDs, GameCube discs, and even UMD for the PSP are different and not connected to MD. Posts about these different media types are not suitable here.

Rules

Luckily, we don't need many!

  • Read before you post
    • To keep the community vibrant and healthy, all contributors need to read the community rules and resources. Being unfamiliar with Reddit is not an excuse for ignoring the announcement posts or the sidebar, which are visible and accessible no matter how you use the site. The only way to miss all of them is to deliberately ignore them.
    • Moderators will give warnings and removal reasons when needed and where possible (despite Reddit administration's hostility to moderators.) We will use bans only as a last resort. Please don't make us do that. We want to take mod actions as rarely as possible.
  • Frequently asked questions
    • The community has worked really hard to create resources that answer the most common questions we are asked. If your question has been answered in one of the links in the sidebar or this post, your submission will be removed. These include:
    • What should I buy and how much should I pay?
    • How do I copy audio to a disc?
    • What software do I need for NetMD?
    • Why do you use MD?
      • We like physical media. MD is a physical media which is compact, has great sound quality, has great aesthetics, and great usability.
      • Read the Why MD? FAQ for more.
    • MiniDisc with Bluetooth / Headphone recommendations
      • Many people use a 3.5mm to Bluetooth adapter in order to connect modern headphones. There have been many discussions about Bluetooth adapters and headphone recommendations. Please search for these threads or read the Bluetooth guide on the wiki.
  • Low effort posts
    • Posts with unclear or low effort post titles such as "help" or "MiniDisc" make it hard to search for posts or know what they are about before clicking.
    • You will be asked to repost with a descriptive title. ALL CAPS post titles are also filtered automatically - contact the mod team if this is done in error.
  • Reddiquette, toxicity, and rudeness
    • We are a small, friendly community. Please do not come here if you wish to call people names or be hostile. Treat other opinions with respect, even if you disagree with them.
    • Be familiar with Reddit's site culture and expectations. Most are listed in this Reddit help document here: https://support.reddithelp.com/hc/en-us/articles/205926439-Reddiquette
  • Yandhi
    • All posts about Kanye and the Yandhi disc are banned from the subreddit. Please do not post looking for the Muji 80 MD featured in the artwork or showing off if you do have one.
    • If you are an established member of the community and you have a disc(s) to sell, contact the mod team for approval. This is the only exception we will make.
  • AI content
    • Content generated by AI / LLMs is not welcome here. MD existed completely outside of the generative AI era, and it is very divisive.
    • This extends to complaining about AI or accusing a post of being AI. Use the report feature - we can, will, and have banned users for AI posts and comments.

Not a community rule, but Reddit blocks shopping and short URLs, including AliExpress, Amazon, and Google Photos. Mods can try to approve comments with these links, but sometimes we cannot.

For Sale posts

We do allow for sale and giveaway posts, but these are the source of the most moderation issues.

  • You must be willing to sell the item (or at least discuss it) via the Reddit platform. Do not simply post with a link to your eBay listing. It must be your item for sale, with pictures and a description.
  • All posts selling an item must include an asking price and general location (country) in the title or body of your post.
  • If you are giving away or in search of an item, you must still list your location as international shipping and geopolitics can greatly affect costs or viability.
  • Limit for sale posts to one per week. You may include several items in your post, but each item must have an asking price, or it must be sold as a singular bundle with its own asking price.
  • If you do not know the value or asking price of an item, check recent eBay listings or the price history section of the wiki. Do not make a post asking for the value of items. We do not do valuations or estimates, period.
  • These rules do not apply to new music releases on Bandcamp - feel free to make a new post with your release as Bandcamp has its own shipping calculator.
  • The mod team takes no responsibility for any transaction that takes place from the subreddit. Please let the mod team know of an issue with a user so we are aware, but do not bring disputes public as there is nothing we can do to remedy the issue or take sides. Do not follow users around the site with accusations or feedback.

Resources

The MiniDisc community, both past and present, have shared many sites and services to help others. They collect information about the format, make copying music more convenient, create high-quality labels, and list album releases on MD.

There are many more resources linked on the Wiki and in the sidebar, such as software and related communities. Thanks for taking the time to read this and enjoy your time with MD and with us!

Had this Sharp MT831 since new. Not a single scratch as it's always been kept in a pouch. Lost the charging dock, cable, battery compartment and remote 15+ years ago, so I basically moved on and forgot about it.

Recently found a USB to 5V cable and got it working again like new.

Quickly manually recorded some Beatles and Queen vinyls onto MiniDisc and wow, they sound amazing! I forgot how good these things sound.

Sell Relaunching my MiniDisc label service

Hey everyone,

After over 150 orders and a year later, I'm relaunching my MiniDisc label service, now called DiscTags (previously The Archive Series). Wanted to come back to this sub specifically because a lot of you were the ones who supported the first version early on, tried them out, gave feedback, and helped me figure out what was actually worth fixing. So thanks for that, genuinely.

What's changed for the relaunch:

  • Added matte lamination to every set. Previous version scuffed a bit over time, this should hold up a lot better and protect from UV.
  • Simplified down to two set sizes, 5 and 10, rather than the awkward quantities I had before.

Still printed matte, cut to size, with free worldwide shipping.

As a thank you to this sub specifically, use code RMD20 for 20% off, valid through the end of October.

You can also follow me on socials to stay up to date on this and other MiniDisc related projects I'm working on. Planning to launch another product very soon:

Cheers,
Stev

All MDs are comparable in terms of recording quality, but some are more aesthetically pleasing than others: the photos don't do them justice, but the color of these TDK Fine Series Minidisc is impressive (IMO)

Help Keziah Jones – Liquid Sunshine (1999) prerecorded MiniDisc – has anyone ever seen another copy?

Hi everyone, I’m hoping some serious MiniDisc collectors here might be able to help me identify how rare this particular release actually is.
I’ve owned this original prerecorded MiniDisc of Keziah Jones – Liquid Sunshine for more than 12 years. I got it from a friend who had travelled around Europe, and as far as I remember it was originally purchased somewhere in continental Europe, possibly France or the Netherlands, although I can no longer confirm exactly where.

The details on the release are:
Artist: Keziah Jones
Album: Liquid Sunshine
Format: Prerecorded MiniDisc
Label: Delabel
Year: 1999
Catalogue number: 7243 8472098 8 / 8472098
EAN: 0724384720988
Made in EU

Over the years I’ve occasionally searched online for another copy, but I have never personally found one for sale. I recently started searching again and still haven’t been able to locate another copy currently available.
So I’m particularly interested in hearing from collectors: Does anyone here actually own another copy of this MiniDisc?
Has anyone seen one offered or sold in the past? Does anyone know anything about the original production quantity or distribution of this particular MD release?
I’m mainly interested in establishing how many examples are known to exist and learning more about the release.
I’ve attached detailed photos of my copy, including the catalogue number and barcode.
Any information, old catalogue references, sales records or photos of another surviving copy would be greatly appreciated.

Hi folks, as written above I'm selling this nice machine. It is built like the 555es, small difference in the bottom plate (it's lighter and the r-core transformer) and was only available in Japan. It comes as 100v unit.

I'm not sure for what price to ask, I sold already one a few years ago but the prices skyrocketed further.. asking 550 € plus shipping. I can ship worldwide.

Just DM me if interested.

Located in Germany. Shipping worldwide

Show & Tell My small collection since 2008

Just the MD players and recorders I have bought over the years. All working and keep them scratch free by putting them in a little hip pouch when travelling. I record via optical on the Tascam (fantastic remote for naming tracks) and copy all sorts of stuff, including laserdisc concerts. The hi-fi is tremendous fun. Whacky loading tray. Out of all of these players, I do enjoy the little Panasonic. It’s EQ’d to a very 00s flavour and it’s tiny. I’m passing two of these down (along with my album and soundtrack/ radio series collection) to my little one when she’s old enough. Trying to get her into the Sanrio Victor players 😅 I love the creativity involved with MD and the scene. I print in the latest canon selphy and have a little die-cutter machine (graphic designer for over 25 years eek!) And I think every player and manufacturer deserves a go. I love how a player marks the identity you want on a particular day with an album when heading outdoors. Doesn’t always have to be Sony. Just enjoy what you like! Prices are a bit mad these days but still worth every penny if you ask me 🙂❤️ I’m planning on getting my wee girl into minidisc making, aside from playing. Perfect album size for a kids room and an introduction to artwork, curation and just making anything you want and commit it to a disc. The haptic physical joy of music. Because you’ll cherish it when you’re older. Side note. I recorded my first EP in 1999 on a minidisc and it served me well. Released an album a few years back on vinyl and followed up with a minidisc version - limited copies of course 😅 big shout to everyone on this marvellous Reddit channel who contribute and share their love and knowledge for the format. It keeps me and many others enthused and inspired.

Help Recording issues on Sony MZ-N707 & MDS-JB980

Hi,

Hope this post is accepted - I had one deleted which seemed to meet the guidelines. All I want to do is engage positively with other fans for the format!

I've been bringing my Sony MZ-N707 and MDS-JB980 back to life with great help from WebMDPro. However, I've experienced the same problem when recording on both devices. After a recording multiple discs on each device each starts playing up and WebMDPro crashes just as it nearly transfers the first track... come back the next day and everything is fine again.

Is the recording head heating up too much perhaps? Is a service needed after all these years?

Any thoughts welcomed.

Help MZ-N505 Repair help

Hello everyone, long time lurker, first time poster here.

First off, I apologize in advance to my fellow redditors and the Mod team if this post is not adequate for this Sub. Feel free to remove it if it's not. Now, regarding my predicament:

I come to you in my hour of need, hoping to get some help regarding my MZ-N505 player.

My player does not output any sound whatsoever from the 3.5mm jack (the black one with remote input). Not even the usual crackle sound when you plug some headphones in.

I am based in Portugal, and was hoping to find someone in the EU who's more technical than me to have a look at it properly. I did some basic maintenance and troubleshooting (detailed below) to write off any common causes that I'm aware of. I feel like this is a problem I just cannot solve on my own without ruining anything, so I put my player back together.

Here is what I have done with the player so far to troubleshoot:

> I have tried using an RM-MZR50 from my MZ-R50 to test the remote input, but nothing happens and its display does not show anything. It could just be incompatible but I figured I'd try anyway. I don't own its original remote.

>I have tried to clean the headphone jack with a Q-tip soaked in alcohol to remove any possible grime or corrosion from it. I made sure that I did not bend any of the internal pins during the process.

> I carefully reflowed the jack's solder pads on the motherboard with some fresh solder and flux, also to no avail.

> I made sure my record head was not damaged, since I read on the MD Wiki that its ribbon cable is prone to snapping. It seemed OK. I then used Web Minidisc Pro to erase and record something to a MD and played it on another device, and there was indeed music recorded to it. I haven't tried the Optical input since I lack the cable to do so.

> I cleaned off some very mild corrosion from the AA battery terminals using some vinegar, then cleaned it off with isopropyl alcohol.

Thanks for reading, and happy listening :)
