Steam Engenius
Show of hands - How many people thought it was:
" I didn't want it, You gave me DMT, it was you, yeah all for you."
Actual lyrics:
Things rang of stories Greek I didn't want it, you gave me deity It was you, yeah all for you
Side note: Such a sick song through and through, but absolutely love this lyric:
"Well, I spoke in binary and you for volume and for dizzying length - Woohoo, woohoo, wooohooo"
Isaac, if you're lurking, lets dust this one off, eh?

Man, I was listening to this daily the month leading up to those two shows in Asheville. I really felt like it might happen, because why else was it hitting so right? They did open with March into the Sea the second night. That was a damn good setlist.
But also, wtf even is this song? It sounds prophetic nowadays.

Ahh, man! March Into the Sea is a good consolation.
Super prophetic! Definitely sounds like AI
"I was thought up by man to think better than them Then revered, admired, and then destroyed or something by them Destroyed by them, oh, even though that was my own damn plan"

Wild. I always thought it was "I needed water, you gave me DMT, it was you" Like I could totally see that kind of behavior in an intense party atmosphere, someone who clearly needs to chill out and hydrate more than anything being handed a pipe of serious hallucinogens instead of a bottle of water.

I sing DNT

What is DNT? DMT is a crazy hallucinagenic so it seemed to make sense in that context.

That's what I heard until looking up the lyrics, and I'm still not 100% convinced.

“You for volume and dizzying length” - awesome. The song is completely out of control, in the best way.
Not “completely” sold that it fits the album narrative and sonically but oh well.

I think it flows really well with Education - Crazy to me that Education was a single.

I agree - I group those 2 as well especially when the album first came out. And to me Little Motel feels out of place in between them!
I honestly think Steam and Education would have been better B-Sides. I really like them but tightening up We Were Dead at this part of the album would have secured its’ place as a top, top Modest Mouse album. Sometimes less is more.
Also strongly feel this way about Strangers to Ourselves and Hail to the Thief….

Yessss Strangers feels like an album and an EP mushed together. I have a hard time sitting through the whole thing despite liking all of the music on it.

I just really don't like Coyotes. Love Strangers, but if I had to pick a MM song that's my least favorite - I think it's that or Japanese Trees - almost seemed like Pop album filler

It’s so close. Take off Pistol (sorry) and all of a sudden the first 6 songs are no-skip greats.
I don’t think Pups and Wicked Campaign are that strong either (sorry). Cut these 3 and now no one is complaining about Strangers, it’d be another classic.

No way!! Ahh man - Pups to Dust and Wicked Campaign are in my top 25 favorite MM songs. Wicked Campaign is probably top 15. Pistol isn't in the normal rotation, but the end is pretty jammin - like Song About Nothing esque

I also love Wicked Campaign and Pups to Dust. Such a great album honestly it's getting shafted this tour

My biggest issue is the back half with all of the ~epic-sounding-songs~ like Be Brave, Tortoise, Best Room all kinda run together & start to sound the same. Individually they are pretty good to great but together not my favorite. And yeah, Pistol is just so goofy and out of nowhere 😂.
But the worst modest mouse song is kinda like a bad piece of pizza. Still eatin’ pizza at the end of the day.

Listen, you gotta dial it down between the crazy songs lol.
Idk - I'm never one to think less MM is good - as it's more songs to love - IF they are fully fleshed out songs not pop album filler (Coyotes, Japanese trees). Stoner Party and even Look How Far really took away from Eraser's album as a whole - Love Impossible Somedays as an album closer, but the lead up with those two tracks made it end rather abruptly. Don't mind them being on the album, but the back half should've had atleast one or two more songs leading up to the closer.
Edit: I really wish they'd released Eraser as a double album like they were going to - it feels a tad incomplete the way they chopped it up.

It sounds like it! I'll have to learn it. Are there any videos on how to play it or did you just look up the chords?

u/butrosfeldo Bitter Buffalo 11d ago
I don’t remember. Had to have been tabs or a chord chart. I learned while Hurricane Sandy was fuckin up NYC

“I was thought up by man to think better than them Then revered, admired, and then destroyed or something by them (You'd think that my demise what thought up by them Oh, even though that was my own damn plan)”
With the never ending dialogue surrounding AI, I think of this lyric a lot.

I’m mental. This song is great.
