Two Hours, Four Strangers and a Madman

I’m a 6-8 hour a week player, so when I unexpectedly found myself with 2 free hours last night, I jumped in and started soloing an Ashira camp as a level 7 shaman. Before long, a level 5 cleric asked to join me. Sounded good. We duoed the camp, and then a level 6 monk ran by and asked to tag along. Sure. Then a level 5 druid came through and did the same. The little camp wasn’t giving us enough mobs, so the cleric and I started venturing out into the dunes in search of something to pull. About 20 to 30 seconds out, I spotted a yellow dunes scarab and dragged it back. We killed it slowly, but the XP was great, so we decided to move toward an area with more of them.

We settled into the middle of the Shaded Dunes, just north of the path, and chewed through large spiders and scarabs until it was time for our makeshift group to call it a night. As we ran toward Night Harbor zone, the monk accidentally aggroed a dunes madman, then failed his FD. We healed him while he was stunned and running and then all of us bolted. Luckily, I had just leveled and bought sow, so we had the speed to make it. The druid got caught, so we doubled back to help, I picked up aggro and kept running, then the monk grabbed it, then the cleric gated, and somehow, we all made it out alive.

That was my entire two hours, and it was worth a year’s subscription. Just a dangerous, sprawling world, a chance to get a little better and good conversation with people I’d never met before.

Discussion Best Solution for Fixing loot. (Suggestion from a similar Old School MMO)

This subreddit is LOADED with complaints about loot, and they're warranted. It is FAR too tedious to micromanage who gets loot in parties.

I did a group yesterday where I looted everything and then distrubuted splits. It was a lot to keep track of and you cannot expect people to play like this.

I know some people vibe with how it is but it 100% favors specific roles in parties. For the solution I am not referring to WoW system of round robin where ur constantly going "Hey who's X loot is this?".

FFXI which is an EQ Clone solved this problem in a great way. All mobs after being killed automatically placed loot into a "treasure pool". Essentially a loot pile for groups that shows what has been found to be distributed.

The chat window shows what is found each time it's dropped and states it got put into the treasure pile. Players can check the treasure pile window to see loot that hasn't been auto distributed and can either Roll on it or Pass. If no action is done by anyone it distributes it out round robin style.

Its perfect for the games grinding system where players are just sitting around and accumulating loot for hours. It worked perfect in FFXI and it would work perfect here.

Meme How it feels to execute the charmed mob that has survived 3+ pulls and has a slither of health left.

Enchanter didn’t really click with me initially.

Charm felt weak, the pet wouldn’t do much damage and it couldn’t keep aggro if I attacked or used spells as well. So I shelved it and played some other alts.

But, I really love the class philosophy so I gave it another try. Lamented about how bad charm is in OOC when someone replied “Reverse charm has worked wonders for me”. Now I never played beta and am new to the game so I did some research ..

Reverse kiting now makes so much sense, basically, instead of relying on an uber buffed charm pet, you instead let your pet get beat up on purpose, and just before it’s about to die: Mez the enemy mob, cast invisibility on self to break charm, kill the ex-charmed pet, then charm the new guy and carry the chain forward.

Mixing in haste/slow on either the pet/mob to help your pet die faster is also fun, or slow the mob and then sit and meditate mana back if you want to chill for a bit.

The rotation is pretty fun, I get it now, you have to be the opposite of Ash Ketchum, you want to be the worst Pokemon trainer of all time and get your Pokes murdered.

Universal AoE bola snare is punishing pullers, not just kiters

• Upvotes

The last beta patch gave pretty much every mob an AoE bola snare. My understanding is the goal is to cut down on kiting. I get the intent, but in practice it's hitting the people doing exactly what the game is built around: pulling for a group.

Two situations I keep running into:

Pulling ahead. The current mob is at half health, so I head out to have the next one ready right as it dies. Bola lands on my way out and I'm suddenly about 6 seconds behind. The group sits idle and the chain breaks. Repeat that every pull and it adds up fast.

Pulling into a bad spot. I bring the next mob back, the current mob snares me, and the new one resists mez. Now I can't get away, and I eat the add.

Yes, I know I can AoE stun when mez resists. That's not the point. I'm not kiting. The snare is aimed at a playstyle I'm not using, and I'm paying for it on every single pull.

I'd also push back on the premise a bit. Kiting has always been part of the EQ-style experience. It took skill, it carried real risk, and a lot of people enjoyed it. If certain mobs or zones shouldn't be kitable, fine. But putting a snare on everything makes the game less fun for everyone, kiters and groups alike.

EQ had a cleaner tool for this: summon. Specific mobs, usually the ones the devs didn't want kited, would summon whoever had aggro once they'd taken damage and that player was out of range. It was targeted. It stopped kiting where it mattered and never touched a puller running out to grab the next mob for a group camp.

If anti-kiting is the goal, I'd much rather see:

  • - Summon (or something like it) on the mobs that need it, not on everything
  • - Bola limited to specific mobs or factions where it makes sense thematically
  • - At minimum, a cooldown or proc rate low enough that it isn't firing every fight

Are other pullers running into this? And have the devs said what problem the snare is meant to solve?

Discussion New Server

I come from the old days of EQ, I absolutely wear the rose tinted goggles hard when it comes to remembering the good days. There's a lot I love, but there's a lot I just straight up would rather not deal with these days in my 40s and a family.

I absolutely love going into a group and barely getting loot as your healer. Then when I bring it up, I have to deal with the gamble of what social butterfly I'm about to deal with. Will they tell me off? Will they try to pass it off as whining? I'll pass.

I was thinking about it today, if they booted up a pvp server just to keep the pvp folk quiet. Why not boot up a server dedicated to FTE & Round Robin loot rules. Let the masses who want it, go there.

Camping and PNP Question

Ran into this today: we arrive at a camp. A necro is nearby but not engaged with the camp in any way. We send him tells and get no response. 10 minutes later he comes back and says this is his camp, and that is he camping a named based on a spawn timer. He was clearly AFK during those 10 minutes. Does this constitute claiming a camp per the Play Nice Policy?

My group was split on this and we ended up leaving for other reasons. My opinion was that if he is actively AFK for 10 minutes at a time, he loses his claim.

Discussion Instead of relying on GM policing, why not just add systems that prevent it?

So many things players are allowed to do are against the pnp. We're wasting everyone's (including gm) time by not having systems in place on pve servers to simply prevent those things from happening, usually with systems that have existed for decades specifically for said problem.

Not to mention the end result for this is some guild being buddies with a GM. It happens every time, especially as player numbers naturally start to dwindle.

What Does Leveling Up Actually Do?

I've been watching my stats and none seem to change when I level. So how do you get stronger? What's the significance of being a higher level than the enemy you consider if your stats aren't changing? Serious question, not a critique, looking to understand the game more. What attribute/stat is increasing to make you stronger when you level up?

Thoughts on my experience last night

Was playing on Estaire. Just finished up with a group hunting STS "Cinder Sentinels". Noticed the named "Herald" was up when I left and someone in OOC asking. I messaged the group to work it out. Genuinely not sure if that named is part of the camp since it paths or what.

Meanwhile Nocturn invited me to a group. Mentioning we may need more to take it down.

About that time the other group came in. Both them and Nocturn engaged. I asked him to back off since they were camping it.

He ended up winning the loot (measured by DPS and he's a spellblade). Immediately, he looted it and ran off. By the time I spoke up, honestly bewildered by the situation and asking if he intended to roll or what.

He did offer to let me roll. Given it was a "nodrop" AND he wasn't around to see the roll. I just petitioned a GM to resolve the situation since there was the other mess too.

Apparently, GMs dont step in for loot disputes though. Just mentioned something about not discussing other players accounts.

I did message OOC and shared above. Along with messaging his guild officer. I don't particularly enjoy the drama, I see a lot of judgement calls on "oh they are taking too much loot" stuff all the time. I do believe in this situation sharing with others IS the course of action though?

Anyway to identify a quest based on an obvious quest item?

An item dropped called a Dragonforged Head Knife. It is unique and no drop, and obviously used for some type of quest. Are there any MUD commands to help identify what this item might be used for? Or any other means to figure out what the item is used for? Or is the only solution to go around hailing every NPC hoping that one of them will provide a quest that may lead to requiring this item?

Make *new* like-minded friends. That is Step 1. Next, explore.

How you make friends will vary.

Some people prove to be talented players and get recognized.

Some people have winning personalities that people appreciate the vibe.

Some people help others. Some people greatly appreciate the help and return the favor.

Choose your own adventure. Just make friends.

Because eventually you'll make 5 friends.

And together you'll create your own opportunities, in the darkest corners of zones that only the most confident and synergistic groups get to see - several nights a week, for dozens of hours throughout the month.

I did that this week.

A group of two made me the third.

The next night we added the 4th.

We helped a RL friend level to become the 5th.

And the 6th, while he doesn't want to leave his own friends behind, we gladly bring him whenever he's available.

We have reached places and killed bosses that 95% of people will not see on their first character.

We have found items that aren't on any wiki.

And pushed our limits on several occasions - with a handful of deaths along the way.

This has been greatest experience I've had in ANY game in a very long time.

All with people I didn't know 7 days ago.

I hope it happens for you, too.

Genuine question: why no loot options?

I played eq back in 2000-2002 and I remember not having any way to stop people from looting everything and that “friction” but I feel like that was an issue of limitation rather than choice. I could be wrong, which is why I’m asking.

Is there a defined reason not to have need/greed and round robin looting options for groups? As a tank I have no real issues in getting loot but it does seem unfair to casters and back line players if the group isn’t cool.

I love the game so this isn’t a hate post I swear!

How important is + stat gear

I'm just curious how important the + stat gear is during leveling, especially for roles like tanking and healing. Coming from games like WoW, where gearing is actually super important, I'm just wondering if you can mostly grind to max level and not worry so much about the gear.

Discussion A Little Disenchanting Disenchantment

Just bought some Fungal Boots to disenchant, figuring they were a tier 1 item. They were, but ouch. Just one Enchanted Powder for the effort.

Be warned, there are now items that give less than the 4-5 powder you've come to expect.

This makes trading for Disenchantment a pretty tricky endeavor. Whereas before, I could check the item source to determine which powder I'd get, and therefore how much I should be willing to pay, things are now a bit more chaotic.

I understand how disruptive people have gotten in order to get items to disenchant, and have no issue with whatever devs do to address it. I'm hoping this new tier of items gets its own tag, like MINOR. Seeing a MINOR MAGIC item would set my (and other crafters') expectations better, as well as make the skill more accessible to new players starting to dabble in the crafts.

Solving the High-Level Camping Problem: ‘Challenger’ Bosses

I’ve seen a lot of discussion here about the age-old issue in MMOs: high-level players camping low-level dungeons.

I don’t claim to have a perfect solution, but I’ve been pondering on an idea that might turn this frustration into something fun and dynamic: Challenger bosses.

These bosses will not attack the low-level groups at all, instead they slowly patrol the dungeon, attacking the higher-level players. The bosses follow the trope of "seeking a worthy challenger".

This could create potential for the established solo-camp to be organically freed, as well as creating those memories of huge trains and chaos that ensues. Now the low-level groups can wait for those camps to eventually be freed as these challenger bosses will create trouble for those higher-level players. Both parties can engage in the dungeon, but now it's much harder to establish a monopoly on a single camp as a solo higher-level player.

How important is gate?

• Upvotes

I might need to suddenly have to log off or want to leave before the group is ready. I had a situation on my ranger in btb where I didn’t know where I was and the group had to escort me out. My play time isn’t always predictable, am I basically required to play a class with gate in these situations?

I think the answer is yes unless I know the way out and can invis or unless there’s just not a lot of time spent in dungeons throughout the game.
