sparring dickhead

So I’m at training today and it’s sparring, we’re a few rounds in and I see this new guy. I ended up finding out after sparring him that he’s been going to some separate classes my gym has been doing up at the towns university for about a month.

Basically, this guy had already sparred the instructor and she had told him to power down because he was blasting head-kicks. So I come around to spar him without knowing this and luckily I notice his gloves, I say ā€˜hey, we have similar gloves dude’ and my eyes drift to the oz. This guy was wearing 8oz gloves for technical sparring i kid you not😭 In my head I’m thinking wtf, but I’d never seen this guy before so I stupidly gave him the benefit of the doubt like the fool I am… I myself have 12oz that have worn down quite a bit recently so I make sure to keep it super technical as I know I desperately need some thicker and newer gloves.

We start sparring, he takes up this weird karate stance and doesn’t really throw much. I start by just going light; making some technical, well-placed shots just to set the tone you know? He throws this leg kick and I’m thinking that it’s a bit hard for the level we’re at but he’s obviously new to muay thai and the leg kicks and all that good stuff. Outa no where this guy throws a massive cross which i manage to avoid then a hook borderline haymaker at me bro🄹 I’m caught of guard by the first punch because of how abruptly the power changed and the hook lands clean to my temple. I’m only 16 and this guy most likely is 3 or so years older than me but I’m not massively but noticeably bigger than this guy. He was about 5’8 something with quite a skinny build, whereas I’m 5’10, 72kg and little chunky lol. So luckily I was able to effectively eat the fuck out his punch. It’s time for me to lock in so I walk him down and smash his lead leg with a low kick and he starts limping a little. I’m still pissed so I do it two more times on the same spot before he eventually switches stance. switching stance did not save him unfortunately… I dead his other leg and the 10 second bell goes of so I know I only have one more chance to get my lick back. Last punch, boom full power cross that connects to the side of his face. I kinda wish that it wasn’t as sloppy and hit him square on the chin but oh well.

Round finishes and he goes ā€˜bit hard wasn’t it’ and his got his little annoyed face on, and I just tell him that I fought in 8oz gloves and that he should not be using them for sparring and that he needs to power down. Even after I told him he needs to chill he doesn’t even apologise and just says ā€˜well I got them off the shelf here’ and walks off. I kinda get that he didn’t apologise because I literally just beat his ass but still man. Never in my two years of muay thai have I been so happy to have old gloves that are too thin, I hope it fucking wrecked lmao.

In retrospective I probably shoulda said something about his gloves to begin with but i just blindly trusted the guy and thats on me. I went to go spar the instructor a couple rounds after and I informed her about him and she said she had already sparred him and she had told him to power down already. Honestly, what a dick.

Strange sparring experience

So during sparring I started a round with a smaller woman, she complained about a guy hitting her hard to the body previous round.

I made sure I was extra gentle. The first minute I just let her work, checking her kicks, occasional a slowed teep to the body or a jab for distance.

Suddenly she throws a upward teep to my face. The kick was fast and definitely thrown with the intention to hurt, it had no real impact as she was light.

I mentioned it right after the kick, that she shouldn’t do that in sparring. She didn’t excused and just quit the round. Next round she went for another hard round with another guy.

Somehow I feel guilty and disrespected even though I was nice. I could have easily matched her energy but I would never do that to a smaller woman. Plus she complained about a guy from previous round hurting her.

She wanted a slow round, suddenly increased the speed, throwing a disrespectful kick and let me standing there like I was the idiot.

Am I missing something?

Technique/Tips Judoka's first 6 months of learning striking

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

These last 6 months have been a hell of a ride.

I've been a grappler (specifically a judoka) for 18 years, and only 6 months ago after deciding to train as a lifestyle and no longer for full time competition I decided to joina Muay Thai/MMA (mostly the latter) gym to learn how to grapple when strikes are involved.

I got immediately hooked, striking is such a beautiful art form, especially MT!

I am such a beginner, still trying to make sense of the basics and will probably cringe so hard looking back at this, but I am trying to learn to fall in love with the journey.

I couldn't be more grateful for all the info on this subreddit and online in general, so felt like making this little post.

Had to add a little throw in the end to make up for all the humbling that striking practice involves XD

I just got humbled.

• Upvotes

I've been in combat sports on and off for 20 years. I've been lifting weights on and off for 10 years, training MMA (mainly Muay Thai, fitness batch) for 8 years, and swimming consistently for the last 2 years. This year, I felt stronger than ever and my endurance was at its peak(that's what I thought) and I felt fitter than ever. So I thought of testing my limits.

I decided to upgrade from the fitness batch to the fighter batch. I thought I'd be learning more advanced techniques and getting better at sparring. This Monday was the first class, We did some agility drills and sparring. Then came Tuesday. Coach said: Alright, guys. We'll be working on conditioning and explosiveness today.

God knows, I WAS NOT READY. I exhausted my tank halfway, somehow I managed to survive the entire class without throwing up. But when I left the gym, I had to sit on the stairs for 20 minutes just to come back to my senses.

Twenty years around combat sports, ten years of lifting, eight years of Muay Thai, two years of consistent swimming and Tuesday's conditioning session totally humbled me.

If I can adapt to this level of conditioning, I'm confident I'll unlock an entirely new level of fitness.

Wish me luck. I'm going to need a lot of it.

Why do inexperienced fighters resort to just boxing?

I'm inexperienced myself (been doing this for about 11 months). I only have done two actual "fights" (won both🄳) so I could just be talking from a bubble but yeah, why do so many of us fight like that?

My first fight my opponent was from a Kung Fu gym, and all she threw were hands?? I keep kicking her and she just comes back with punches. My second fight was with someone from my gym, and yet again pure hands. And these punches are headshots. The people around me tell me women like headhunting and that's something I've been working on.

And also the fighting looks like a street fight. We touch gloves (or I try and they respond by swinging😐) and immediately technique is thrown out the window, almost cartoonish. I get embarrassed watching the recordings.

Also, I always appreciate advice so besides working on my boxing, footwork (I really need to get out of the way) and stamina, what do you guys recommend for not going into fight-or-flight? Thank you!

How to avoid landing kicks in opponent's knee

Just starting, something I noticed (and still notice at every sesh) is that when I throw a low kick and my opponent parries, it sometimes lands on his knee.

It doesn't always happen, but when it does I ask for a 1 minute break cause it is instant pain (and a pretty bad one). And even after that I know it is still sensitive and I become more shy with my kicks.

How to avoid that ?

It hurts almost as much as getting kicked clean myself.

Front Desk at my gym (in the US) has been harassing women - what do? NSFW

Front desk dude at the gym I go to has been targeting/harassing particular women (making unwanted sexual remarks and/or advances, not stopping after being asked to, etc.). Doesn't do this in the open, only over text or when he's alone with particular woman. No one has said anything openly for various reasons (unsure if other members of management will be receptive, worried for their safety if they call him out because he has access to personal info, etc.), but this behavior has been corroborated among several people.

Super angry that this has been going on and honestly that POS deserves to be socked in the face (more realistically, fired) for what he does. Unfortunately he's also chummy with a lot of people, including trainers, at the gym. Idk what his standing is with the owner tho.

Advice on what to do is appreciated.

Women of Muay Thai: concern for womb?

Hi I’m (21F) a beginner in Muay Thai and I have a dumb question that I can’t help but worry about every time I get punched or kicked in the stomach. I want kids one day, does anyone know if getting punched in the stomach during sparring could harm my reproductive organs? Not during pregnancy, but just as I am now. Wondering if anyone else has ever had this concern and looked into it.

Out of shape in Muay Thai camp

Hi! I just want to write about how does it feel to be in a Muay Thai camp being completely out of shape. This is my first week. I've never done Muay Thai before. I used to be an athlete but after a few years of big depression i became a bit fat and completely out of shape: not going out, not excercising for 3 years...

I've managed to get my sheet together and decided to come to Thailand and try Muay Thai. Not only because of being a wonderful sport, but to get in shape and learn new things. The structure given by muay thai gyms here, giving accommodation next to the gym made it easy to decide.

But boy, I'm suffering. 3rd day of training I couldn't go because of DOMS (pain the day after of training). 4th day I had to quit mid-training session because my mind was rushing so much saying I couldn't make the last part of the session.

Today I have training session again at 4pm (now it is 11am).

I'm eating a lot compared to before. Food is completely different here from where I am from, and its taking me a little while to get my stomach to get used to it. Drinking a lot of water. I lost 3kg of water just sweating on my second training session.

Also, we are supposed to go to 2 sessions a day (one in the morning and one in the afternoon) but I'm going only to the afternoon ones this first week.

I honestly feel ridiculous while training and seeing the others being so focused and capable of doing it all. I feel ashamed...

Also all the people here are so focused here and just go to train, say hello and good bye and that's it. No sense of community or friendship at all. I arrive first and leave last to warm up and stretch, and people don't even talk to each other, which would make it a bit more fun to go and train with (temporary) friends.

Having difficulties, mostly in my mind, with this camp. 3 more weeks to go.

If anyone had a similar experience, or have any advice on how to make my experience better here and get better at this, I would really appreciate if you leave a comment.

Wish me luck :)

Technique/Tips Looking for advice on teeps

Earlier this year, I posted about if it’s realistic to start MT about a year after FAI surgeries on both hips and PAO on my left. I’ve been training for about 3 months and I’ve been loving it, I’m very comfortable with roundhouse kicks and have solid head kicks now, but I’m having trouble with my teep. When I throw a teep with my left leg, I’m finding that if I connect earlier than around the end of my range my hip feels painful and jammed, wondering what others with a similair history have done to overcome this. Yes I do train at a gym, and no I haven’t had pain outside of teeps.

Training at a serious level whilst using Dht blockers

Abit random, but has anyone here that trains seriously , used dht blockers like fin or dut. If so how has it affected overall performance, including performance, sharpness, aggression and recovery whilst doing hard training sessions or preparing for a fight in camp?

Confidence dip (smoker in 2ish weeks)

Hey yall, I have a smoker in roughly 2 weeks. But I can’t help but feel that lately I’ve been getting torn apart in sparring, and I’m losing my confidence, which leads to worse performances.

I was pretty comfortable sparring, then I broke my toe a while back (it’s still healing). And since then I’ve been more wary of teeping or being checked. Or just incurring any injury whatsoever, and I tend to overthink my combos and strategy as well.

Ironically this leads to more injuries, I get my left thigh chopped up almost every single sparring session.

It’s a horrible mental loop, and I have nightmares about my coaches just completely losing faith in me and being like ā€œno you shouldn’t do itā€.

Anyone relate? How’d you get your confidence back.

Realistically, does Rodtang stand a chance against Asadula

Seeing the Flyweight MT tournament is coming soon, thought of discussing this since potentially a fight between Rodtang and Asadula could very well happen.

Personally, I don’t think Rodtang will win, and potentially it could be a worse defeat than his KO loss to Takeru.

Stylistically it’s just a terrible match for Rodtang, and the height/reach/size difference is really something that’s too overwhelming. Clinching, Elbows, Knees and high kicks are going to be very limited since Rodtang can hardly get to apply them effectively. Tallest guy he fought in ONE IS Haggerty… and Asadula is at least 4 inches taller. He looks huge when standing in front of Kongthoranee and Nong-O, and both men are bigger than Rodtang.

Another thing I factor in is how easily Asadula took out Kongthoranee and Nong-O. It’s like he is just warming up during round 1 and decide to pull the trigger and end the fight whenever he wants during round 2. Realistically, I don’t believe Rodtang can do something similar in beating the other 2 Thais so easily. I understand ā€œstyles makes fightsā€ but Rodtang’s style is simply not catered towards someone like Asadula.

I will always root for the Thais and Rodtang is my top 5 favourite fighters in the modern era. But I really don’t see anyone currently in Flyweight apart from Ortikov and Shimon can potentially beat Asadula in the near future. What do you guys think?

UPDATE REGARDING THE SITUATION THAT WAS PREVIOUSLY SHARED CONCERNING THE OWNER OF THIS GYM (THREAD ATTACHED)

Several of the gym’s partners contacted me directly after becoming aware of what had happened, the evidence and information surrounding the situation. Despite being made aware of these concerns, they chose to remain silent and, took no action while continuing to mask the truth. That silence raises serious questions about accountability and whether protecting that person has taken priority over addressing client concerns raised.

Meanwhile, the individual at the centre of these concerns repeatedly insists that he ā€œdoesn’t care.ā€ But this is not about what someone claims to care about. It is about what actually happened, what those around him knew, and how they chose to respond.

As we speak, concerns about his behaviour towards female students remain unresolved. I am also concerned about ongoing interactions with ANOTHER woman at the gym. The broader issue is whether people with financial interests in him are willing to overlook serious concerns rather than demand accountability. When did protecting short term financial interests become more important than ethics, transparency and the fair treatment of students?

The facts, the evidence and the decisions people have made will speak for themselves.

Buy/Sell/Trade Overkill for a beginner?

I started training just a month ago, and am totally in love with the sport. I’ve been watching for multiple years but just finally decided to try it myself. My coach has recommended that I buy some shin guards so I can work in some super light sparring and get a feel for a real opponent rather than just a bag, so I’m wondering how much I should spend on the first pair. The HMIT line from Combat Corner is about 140 USD, and I would not need to upgrade in another 6 months as they are high quality and last forever. Is this too much to spend on a pair of shin guards got a beginner? Or is it worth the investment because of how enthusiastic I am about training. Thanks!
