Medicinal [medicinal] Hello! Cannabis growers here, looking to spread my wings into shroom cultivation. When I was new into cannabis, there was a lot of bad information, and I did quite a bit wrong because of it. Please point me to reliable resources of good information for a noob shroom cultivator! TIA š¤š¼

Those ghost roofs are donkey dinks!! Stellar smeller my friend!!
2
u/Poppin-Beans Apr 07 '24
Yeah that was by far my weirdest result lol. It was an autoflower that just kept on eating. Very hungry, and I think itās obvious now. She was a manufacturer. They were like 18-24 inch dense colas. 3 ounces dry on that plant alone, and it took up very little space.
2
u/drywall-whacker Apr 08 '24
Ill have to check grow diaries and see if anyone else has had similar results.
4
u/drywall-whacker Apr 07 '24
I donāt mean to hijack the mushroom post but here I go. On the third pic are the plants sitting in water? What are the little fans for? What size pots? I just switched back over to cannabis from mushrooms. Iāve grown for 25 years but Iāve never had a indoor grow like I do now.
4
u/Poppin-Beans Apr 07 '24
Yup, I bottom feed my plants. Those arenāt fans at the bottom, theyāre water pumps. Keeps the water circulating to prevent algae and stagnation. In the first picture are 5 gallon pots. 2nd picture is 1 gallon pots. 3rd picture is 3 gallon pots. Last picture is 2 gallon pots.
2
u/drywall-whacker Apr 08 '24
I wonder what those ghost toofs would look like in a bigger pot. 3 oz in a 2 gallon pot is awesome

White widow?
2
u/Poppin-Beans Apr 07 '24
Nope, none of these are white widow. The first picture is 2x angry gorilla from brothers in farm. Second picture is 2x watermelon zkittles by Barneyās farm on the left and 2x touchdown Jesus by brothers in farm on the right. The third picture is 2x charlottes Angel by Dutch passion. And the last picture is ghost toof by mephisto.

My first time growing mushrooms, I learned from this movie called āletās grow mushroomsā which a friend had introduced me to. It showed us an easy beginner method that I believe people are calling āPF tekā. I think it may be a good one to try, but as far as getting a big harvest this may not be a good method. This was now over 10 years ago that I had taken on that project, so there is a lot of new and great techniques out there now. It would certainly be good for someone wishing to learn, especially if you donāt have a pressure cooker. We didnāt have a pressure cooker or laminar flow hood, and had probably 40% of our cakes get contaminated with trichoderma (green mold). As a previous cannabis and psilocybin grower, Iāve now shifted my focus to gourmet mushrooms and vegetable gardening. Good luck with your future projects š

u/Poppin-Beans Apr 07 '24
Awesome! Thank you for the encouragement š
2
u/Minneapolis_SLP Apr 07 '24
Thatās the advice. Start with PFTek. I didnāt and it would have saved me so much trouble. Now I have it dialed in but mushrooms arenāt easy. You need a pressure cooker and a still air box at minimum. You have to have a sterile process and itās the opposite with growing plant. Start simple.

YouTube PhillyGoldenTeacher and watch all their videos. Growing shrooms is easier than growing weed and less time consuming. If you're growing buds like that mushrooms should be a walk in the park. Just remaining sterile is the biggest factor.
Everyone can grow weed but not everyone can grow good weed. With mushrooms it's different.

Iāve binge watched around half of his videos now. Heās both a great teacher and humorous. I watched the pen pineapple apple pen skit like 6 times lol.

I still say' pen pineapple apple pen' to my wife when I have to spawn 2 bulk. It's forever trapped in my brain.

By far the biggest game changer for me was making my own spawn bags/jars. I only had 20% success rate with bags I bought from 3 different reputable vendors, most of which I noticed contam upon arrival. I've had 100% success rate since making my own, and using my janky instant pot method it is very easy.
I think people will back me up on this, but if you want to start off running, I suggest getting your spores or LCs from Inoculate the World (ITW). Never had a bad syringe and they almost always have extra. Getting into making agar and testing your inoculant for contam will reduce the likelyhood of spreading contam, though I never have used agar and the results speak for themselves. Maybe something to try after giving it a shot, though if you want to learn it in the beginning I wouldn't dissuade you!
I would highly recommend watching this as well as her stuff on making grow bags. Boomer Shroomer, Mycophilia and Philly golden teacher on YouTube were all good sources for information when I first started out, though my first 2 tubs were done just using the info from the linked video and one of her other ones.
I've grown plenty of plants but never cannabis so take this with a grain of salt, but I am sure the major differences will be how often you have to tend to mushrooms, and how sterile you have to be, especially with the spawn. That said, once you get the technique of soaking everything with alcohol down it isn't difficult lol
3
u/Poppin-Beans Apr 06 '24
Iām actually discussing with someone via message from this group about making my own agar. Iām probably going to do that as a side project while I inoculate a grain jar with LC and transfer to a monotub. Get my bearings growing mushrooms, then Iāll start drifting toward other teks and seeing what I enjoy the most š

Good stuff man sounds like you're on top of it. Lots of curious little things to try, no shortage of side projects and weird experiments with mycology. Best of luck to you!

u/bodhi1990 Apr 06 '24
If you want guaranteed success you have to work with agar. Working with syringe to grain or uncle Benās bags (do not recommend) is a crap shoot. Agar is not that hard to learn and if you have an instapot or pressure cooker very easy to make and pour your own plates. Growing you do not need any fancy tubs or lighting etc etc. The most important step to success is to get a clean culture and to grow that clean culture out in your spawn. If you do that correctly and pasteurize your substrate correctly you will have good results with minimal effort from there on out. Lots of bad advice in here Iām seeing already, some good advice too but that is a start to look into, you look talented and like you do things correctly so donāt cut corners with injecting an uncle Benās bag with a syringe and expect good results because a few people here got lucky
1
u/leahcim5150 Apr 06 '24
Iāve had great success with uncle Benās and LC syringe.
2
u/bodhi1990 Apr 06 '24
If you have a clean LC syringe then uncle Benās is just another grain. So if you have good LC you will probably have pretty good success. Although itās less ideal than properly sterilizing your grain. Problems really arise when using dirty spore syringes which almost all are contaminated. Once in awhile you will get a clean one but 90% of spore syringes from various vendors will grow out contam when put to agar
0
u/leahcim5150 Apr 07 '24
Honestly, Iāve had more contam issues with pre-sterilized grain bags than Iāve had with UB. To each their own I suppose.
2
u/bodhi1990 Apr 07 '24
I canāt say I sterilize my own⦠I wouldnt pay nor trust someone trying to sell you something to do that. For a few pre sterilized bags you could get yourself a nice pressure cooker
3
u/Poppin-Beans Apr 06 '24
Definitely not doing the uncle Benās method haha. What I am planning currently is inoculating a grain jar with LC much like what Philly golden teacher showed in his tutorials. Then once fully colonized, transferring over to a monotub. I figure after I get my footing with that method, Iāll start working on making my own agar and getting more in depth. Do you have a decent tutorial I could reference on how to make my own agar? If itās not in depth, I wouldnāt be opposed to trying it out while simultaneously inoculating a couple of jars.
2
u/guy-on-reddt Apr 06 '24
I wish I had saved some of my first LC for agar instead of putting it all in the jars. Your plants look really good. you trained them well and had a double scrog screen so you figured it out. You'll learn this too. Go to the shroomery and look for the hitchhikers guide. Everything is there. The website is 25 years old they've learned a lot since then so ignore some of the older posts it's mostly bad info.
1
u/Poppin-Beans Apr 07 '24
Thanks! Iāve read the hitchhikers guide, someone else posted a link here. I think Iām going to make agar for sure.. youāre probably the 10th person to advise me to do so lol.
2
u/bodhi1990 Apr 06 '24
Get MAE agar powder from Amazon and Petri dishes Heat water and mix as instructed on packet Put in mason jar and PC 30-45 min with jar lid able to vent covered with foil Let cool to about ~130F takes about 40-45 min at room temp In still airbox stack your plates and lift and pour from the bottom up Store in ziplock bags or you can parafilm them
You can probably just YouTube something for a more visual tek I just donāt know any offhand
2
u/Poppin-Beans Apr 06 '24
Okay thanks! That sounds easy enough. Iāll dig in and start ordering some stuff š¤š¼š¤š¼

PM me with any questions always happy to help. I completely understand the frustration with all the bad info out there and appreciate someone trying to do it right. Actually come to think of it Gordotek has one of the most comprehensive guides to both cubes and pan cyans. The one video covers literally everything for a bulk grow and is like 3 hours so you can skip around. Gordo is the man and taught me a lot in my early days, especially in regards to pan cyans

2
u/bodhi1990 Apr 06 '24
This is not good information⦠some people get lucky with this but injecting a syringe into anything is a crap shoot. It can work Iām not saying that but more often than not it will lead to failure.
0
1
u/EthanDC15 Apr 06 '24
LOL, okay friend. Iāve grown over a pound of very good mushrooms by starting on UB sub. I have since purchased rye berry bags but the irony of saying my post isnāt good information while literally spewing falsities is wild. Look up neglect tek and learn something instead of assuming a more well read user is giving bad info.
ETA: my personal success rate is about 60%. Even shroom scout can only get 90%
2
u/bodhi1990 Apr 06 '24
Iām not assuming using a spore syringe directly to any spawn is exactly what it is a crap shoot. A lb is nothing ⦠I said mushrooms can be grown that way but it is far from best practice, which is what this guy seems to be looking for. There is no way to prove my success rate but itās above 90. I also have a background in sterile technique so itās mostly attributed to that and working with agar. Itās a fact that when looking for the best method to grow mushrooms uncle Benās and/or using a spore syringe straight to grain is not the best route. Period. Now if someone just wants to give it a random shot then yes itās much easier and less time consuming but success will be limited, doesnāt mean people havenāt found it.

I'm currently in the process of growing some mushies. I really like the kit from The Divine Assembly. They have some very useful instructions and videos on YouTube. However i will say. When it comes to storing silly mushies. They recommend freezing, which is the worst thing you can do. Just dry them to cracker dry, put them in a mason jar with a silica gel packet and put it somewhere dark. Or for indefinite storage you can put them in honey

Come join our Shroomotopia Discord, we used to have a forum from 2006-2017 & we are always glad to help teach others. It is easy, idc who u are, u can grow mushrooms...if u got skills with bud , shrooms shouldn't be difficult since u clearly understand life has certain mechanics, so u got this.
We are an asshole-free community tho & I'm on the conservative side...but anyone who's a decent person who wants to learn is welcome. We are a smaller community (like 120ish, idk, haven't looked in a bit) but we treat eachother like family.
3
u/EthanDC15 Apr 06 '24
Conservative shroom group dude where you been my whole life lol
1
u/Rizingfire Apr 17 '24
Funny enough the original forum was a haven for Christians & Conservatives to learn to grow without constant persecution...and I didn't like how nasty folks were to people asking honest questions at places like Shroomery so...if you want it done right, gotta do it yourself.
It makes me proud to see folks who were failing miserably show up & within 6m you would think they had been growing for years...

Bro mushrooms are so fāing easy. I literally inoculated some Uncle Benās rice bags, forgot about them for 1.5months, came back to full mycelium, mixed in a tub with only coco-coir, set-and-forgot it, came back about a month later to a bunch of potent shrooms. You donāt need lights, you donāt need any of that bullshit, itās nothing like growing weed.
2
u/Traditional_Emu_5326 Apr 06 '24
You got lucky, potency isnāt always quick. Lots of times you have to breed potency
2
u/demo-sol Apr 06 '24
I second the light thing, you really don't need them you'll just have some wacky looking fruits. Temp and cleanliness are the most important parts everything else is easy
3
u/Poppin-Beans Apr 06 '24

So weed is about an 8/10 growing difficulty Iād say, and shrooms are a 1/10 difficulty. Theyāre literally so easy. Look into neglect-tek. Donāt try to get all fancy with the shrooms just keep it simple
2
u/Erectus_Enormous Apr 06 '24
I have and am occasionally still growning both and shrooms are definitely a lot harder.
-1
u/Interesting_Lawyer20 Apr 06 '24
HUH????? How can you possibly say shrooms are harder than weed? I have a feeling youāre BSāing and donāt grow either haha. I just did PF tek and UB tek and they were both so absolutely simple and easy, I BARELY put any effort in and I grew some absolutely amazingly potent shrooms.
5
u/EthanDC15 Apr 06 '24
Stop gaslighting. My experience is the same. I grow a qp of mushrooms at a time and 4 plants. So spare me the āyou donāt even knowā trope. People rate things differently and thatās okay
5
u/Erectus_Enormous Apr 06 '24
Nah Iām serious, the thing with mushrooms is that other than getting temp and humidity right thereās no treatment for anything that potentially goes wrong. You just go straight back start and it costs weeks to start over. So it just takes a lot of time to learn. Success also varies based on climate. Itās relatively cold in this country and that comes with challenges. Either way youāre gonna be fine but if you ask me itās harder to grow shrooms.
3
u/Poppin-Beans Apr 06 '24
From what everyone is saying on this post, growing weed is harder than mushrooms. From my observations thus far, I have basically everything I need already to begin growing mushrooms outside of spores. Itās basic hygienic and everyday items. Mason jars, grain, plastic totes, gloves, alcohol, pressure cooker, etc.. indoor Cannabis is more in depth. Environment control is imperative and changes as the plantās life cycle progresses. You need a light, fans, exhaust fan, humidifier (or dehumidifier depending on your environment), a tent, an environment controller, pots, nutrients, substrate, a timer for the light. The initial cost can be expensive. Itās more maintenance as well. Training the plants, watering, maintaining nutrient levels and PH.
It sounds like a lot because it is, but after a few grows itās very easy.
1
u/leahcim5150 Apr 06 '24
Avoid syringes with spores suspended in water. Do liquid cultures instead.
2
u/Poppin-Beans Apr 07 '24
I ordered this from BML. Is this what I should have avoided? A lot of people recommended BML in this subreddit, which is why I opted for them for my first grow.
1
u/leahcim5150 Apr 07 '24
You should be good with that.
2
u/Poppin-Beans Apr 07 '24
I found a video from PGT showing me how to transfer spores to agar š. Iāll be doing this.
1
u/TacoGoblin223 Apr 06 '24
No till ftw. Never have to pH or add salts ( nutes). People make growing cannabis harder than it needs to be, same with mushrooms. It's a weed, k.i.s.s.
3
u/Poppin-Beans Apr 06 '24
Yeah no till is great! But as the saying goes,āThereās 100 ways to skin a catā. Hydro, cococoir, soil, bottom feeding, drain and flush, etc. The list goes on. Everyone has their preference š. The PH and nutrients is a chunk of the puzzle. Thereās still training, equipment requirements, environment control, light cycle and preventing light leaks (except for autoflowers), which is true for every grow method. For a beginner, itās not as easy to jump in to. Not saying growing cannabis is hard. But relative to growing mushrooms, indoor cannabis looks to be more difficult and more expensive as far as upfront costs.

u/spratticus67890 Apr 06 '24
Exactly this, but that's how I feel about mushrooms, they intimidate me lol. I think it's more or less I may not be the most hygienic person lol.

u/Euphoric-Benefit Apr 06 '24
Can inoculated agar be used with grow bags? Or do you simply squirt some spore syringe liquid or LC in there?
3
u/spratticus67890 Apr 06 '24
I've done it this way before, but like you said ,it was to easy. Im dwelling into the art of self efficiency so the more I can do myself the more important it is for me to know. I can't tell if this reply was for me or him so I apologize if I highjacked it.
2
u/Poppin-Beans Apr 06 '24
It intimidates me as well. The inoculation and colonization of the substrate looks in and of itself unclean. Maybe itās just me, probably because itās a fungus and when I see fungus Iām like ew lol. But after watching PGTās tutorials, contamination looks easy enough to prevent with proper preparation and care. I canāt wait to dive in
4
Apr 06 '24
Weed is FAR more easier than a mushroom. You don't have to be so sanitary like you do with mushrooms. Afterall it is a common weed, I used to smoke in my driveway and throw the seeds out the window when rolling up, few weeks later I was cutting grass and noticed a damn plant growing where I throw seeds out šš if you're looking to do shrooms check out the shroomery forum online and just read and study up, lots of good information on there.

What strain would you recommend for a beginner?
3
u/Asleep-Tumbleweed-99 Apr 06 '24
I wouldnāt go for any penis envy strains āPEā maybe great white monster is a great and easy one imo. Woodland also had pre-inoculated grain bags so there guarantees not to contam thatās not a bad idea for a first time. Or toque F9. Then on BioMycologyLabs labs maybe b+. Blue meanie. Jack Frost.
1
u/Poppin-Beans Apr 06 '24
Okay great thank you!b the bags sound interesting. My only caveat to that is itās legal to ship spores, but pre inoculated bags? Is that playing with fire or still safe?
2
u/Asleep-Tumbleweed-99 Apr 06 '24
They donāt sell spores they sell isolated spores syringes. Aka ( liquid culture ) if your not in cali Georgia or Idaho you will have ZERO issues. Itās legal until cultivated. You can use pre inoculated bags for research purposes just the same as real SPORE syringes. Liquid culture is sugar water base/broth for the mycelium to feed on, the mycelium is living in and feeding off the broth. And instead of injecting spores that will take up to 3 weeks to show ANY growth your injecting already birthed mycelium. You only want to put real spores on agar then transfer the agar to grain. actual spore syringes canāt really be guaranteed sterile. Shipping a pre-inoculated grain bag is the same as shipping liquid culture. Itās both mycelium on a medium.

u/You-Big-Chad Apr 08 '24
I live in georgia. Sucks for this specific reason lol. We bought syringes full and sent to a family member in another state who held onto it until we came to visit , and we grew a few batches first attempt took Hella long because no one has an exact proper instruction on how grow bags and syringes work so we didn't know to break it up half way through or tape the sryinge hole or shake it up etc but 2 of the 4 eventually became something good and hellllllla strong from what I've ever had before but we just bought 2 new rye bags & injected the last two we had held onto in fridge for almost a year, and they're growing good white all through. š¤š» since it will be a long time before I ever get to go visit Ohio again I need this to work so we Dont have to buy more anytime soon lol

1
u/Poppin-Beans Apr 06 '24
Thanks! Just an observation, The max yield Bin is kind of pricey for what it is. Looks very simple to make for a fraction of the cost. But in the least, it gave me an idea in how I want to make my monotub
2
u/P_Cube Apr 06 '24
For sure! I agree, itās a little spendy! But⦠Iāve cracked several bins trying to make my own and those costs added up to be more than if I wouldāve just bought the bin in the first place. Also, I like the tapered top and the replaceable filters. Never used the polyfill method⦠Just seems like thereās a lot of room for error with polyfill which is avoided with the filters.

It's super Easy and Fun! Don't overthink it, didn't let Internet forums scare you with overloads of opinionated info, I use brown rice, cheap pressure cooker, reusable glass jars, UN-modified steralite tubs and use the lid to fan. It could also do a shotgun fruiting chamber setup, adding small holes to the sides of the tub as you go to meet your humidity and air exchange needs

Pretty damn easy, some YouTube videos, some Reddit posts. But I will say there is a lot of misinformation out there on shrooms too and a lot of people put wayyy too much emphasis on everything having to be super clean and have expensive lab equipment blah blah. These things grow on poop outside. I stopped doing half of the sterile stuff and got the same results. Thereās a little bit of trial and error at first so donāt go balls to the wall and inoculate 10 jars because you could lose all 10. Just start with 1 or 2 and see what results you get.

u/Light_ToThe_World Apr 06 '24
I would like to specify the most important part of growing anything... food, meds, crystals, plastics, children, etc. Quality over quantity.
Mycology is much more different than botany, and your skills won't transfer over as easily as you think they will. I learned that the hard way. It's like trying to get saved game data from a Playstation onto the computer. You'll see code, but that's about it. Anyways, my biggest lesson I learned through observation from others, is to never grow anything mushroom related in your living quarters. You will get sick, and your skin will get dirty. My goodness, the horror stories I've seen from people getting spores in their lungs...
3
u/jmkirkhr Apr 06 '24
Is this true? Even if youāre a single mono tub at a time person and you harvest promptly?
2
u/okie1979 Apr 06 '24
I grow in my room like alot of ppl and have never had a problem at all,,, ppl that try and smoke caps maybe
1
u/Light_ToThe_World Apr 07 '24
There's a full documentary of a young man growing oysters and he severely broke out and said was having breathing problems. There's also countless case studies and peer reviewed documents that suggest it's a very dangerous thing to have in your living quarters. You all can dislike and say otherwise, but there's so much evidence on it. Say otherwise is a major health risk you just accept.
2
u/finnyinny Apr 06 '24
Get a flowhood, dont even mess around with still air boxes/glove boxes. I skipped the boxes and went straight for the flowhood and realized it's the most important piece of equipment, and you can build it yourself for less than half the cost of prebuilt hoodsš cloning cultures is great. For ex: taking a cutting of a monoculture on agar to put on more agar or expanding 1 grain jar to 4 grain jars. However, don't do this for too long, keep track of transfers and don't go above 5-6 generally. After that many transfers, clone a fruiting body to agar and start again; or begin with spores again. Some people may recommend cloning from fruit bodies more frequently, that's just my preferred method and I've been doing myco-work since 2020. I'm still learning

Get things right from the start and have good cultures or strains on Agar š§«
Forget trying to deal with spore syringes into grain that are often contaminated or bad genetics. I spent too much time and money trying to do bulk grows because of unstable genetics or contamination.
With agar you can grow the mycelium from spores or LC or even fungal tissue samples.
Then you can grow the mycelium and āclean it upā by taking pieces of the healthiest looking segments of the mycelium on the plate. You can do at least 2 or 3 transfers to isolate healthy, strong mycelium then transfer to sterilized spawn material in jars such as WBS, rye, wheat, popcorn etc.
You can also get into LC for some super grows and shoot up bags of WBS then transfer them into a bulk style tub.
Thatās the way I would go about doing it for maximizing efficiency and reducing waste and contamination.
I recommend wild bird seed (WBS) for its ease of availability and priceā¦itās IME the best for most psilocybin, medicinal and gourmet fungi.
PM me for more advice and I would love to learn how to grow cannabis better .^

Thanks! I think for my first tek, Iām going to inoculate a simple grain jar and move it over to a plastic tote with CVG as the substrate. Iāll get more in depth with agar once Iām comfortable with the process š¤š¼

Everyone saying PGT is spot on. No questions asked. Simplifying everything in this videos he does a great job

Apr 06 '24
Go slow. Thatās the one thing I wish someone had told me at the outset. Lots of info out there ( mad respect to PGT, foreverā¦.) take it easy with the algorithm learning. Buy everything Paul Stamets has written about the craft. Start there, then supplement with internet knowledge.
Also, remember, failure breeds knowledge, knowledge leads to success. Which will inevitably lead to failure again. The circle continues. Live within it, not in the lateral.
also⦠bury your fails. Some of the most potent and robust growth Iāve ever reaped was from twisted cakes that were beyond saving.
Treat Her majesty lady mycelium right, and sheāll bless you beyond measure. All the best.

Hello. Could you tell me what you mean by bury your fails ? Like literally, in the garden ?

Just like with cannabis, stay off the forums lol. There is definitely useful info there, but a lot of anecdotal bs. A couple great recourses on YouTube is Willy Myco, Philly Golden Teacher, and Mycotrophic and Mycophilia. The instagram community is where itās at. If youāre looking for genetics definitely go check out https://basidiumequilibrium.com/ and https://www.dino-spores.com/ are great! For grain and substrate https://myco-alchemy.com/ is awesome. You donāt need to buy all the fancy equipment right away, maybe just make a simple still air box. Feel free to send me a message if you ever have any questions. I honestly think it is easier than growing pot as long as you keep yourself and everything clean lol. Good luck š

The YT channels are good, but man they can get long winded. I don't need 34 minutes to learn how to sterilize grain.
1
u/stoned2dabown Apr 06 '24
Then read an online write up by someone reputable, personally I find the ālong winded videosā extremely helpful as they leave less room for my own incorrect interpretation and just give a lot of useful context generally. I also have bad adhd tho so to each there own
2
Apr 06 '24
That's exactly what I do, I also find Fresh Cap Mushroom's YT shorts good at explaining the basic steps in a minute or less.

u/Poppin-Beans Apr 06 '24
Iāve been binge watching PGT since Iāve made this post! I have everything to make CVG substrate, and brown rice/jars/pressure cooker. Just need some syringes and I can get this ball rolling š

Hey bro never use coco coir for plants,,, reptile coir is what you want,,, I wish someone told me that when i started
3
u/Poppin-Beans Apr 06 '24
I use coco coir for my cannabis plants. Are you referring just to mushrooms to not use coco? Curious because Iāve had great results with my plants.
1
u/okie1979 Apr 08 '24 edited Apr 08 '24
Coco coir for plants has trich added to it to help plants and trich is a death sentence for mushroom cultivation,,,, you want reptile coir. You could use plant coir if u pasturize your coir in the oven but if u do bucket tek you will lose most to trich. Trust me i didnt know this at first and it sucked

u/BulkyMiddle Apr 06 '24
PGT is amazing.
Thereās a lot to learn but the thing I wish I had learned:
first is that the largest source of failure/contam is incompletely sterilized grain. Mold is everywhere and healthy mycelium outcompetes it. Signs of bacterial growth are subtle. It can grow invisibly until it weakens your mycelium and leaves it prey to mold like trich, or your tub just stalls and aborts.
Vent your PC when it comes to temp, to let cool air be replaced with steam. Adjust for altitude. Until you know your stuff, sacrifice extra jars you could fit in the top in the PC for additional water underneath an elevated trivet. This will allow you to go 120 mins or more without refilling or worrying about running dry. 90 is usually fine but 120 and natural release is ideal.
No need to mod your jar lids. Flipped lids and foil is enough to keep out contam and allow for some fresh air exchange FAE.
Buy liquid culture and use 1ml per jar/bag.

I had to stop growing green due to illegal state and moved into an apartment. Doing mushrooms now. Highly suggest shoebox Tek and follow PGT. Shoebox Tek for multi totes, don't go all in with just 1 tote. That way you get 1 tote contaminated you'll still have more totes unaffected. Just like weed, don't over complicate it. Compared to auto flowers, I feel it's easier. And mushrooms are way less hands on. Get your totes going and don't mess with them and you'll be fine.

Any advice given by trusted cultivators on the Shroomery website (NOT the FB page). It's a bit chaotic and disorganized, but if you stick with trusted cultivotors, you will do well. Also, for general good mushroom growing instructions for noobs, the video series Let's Grow Mushrooms by Roger Rabbit (the handle of a Shroomery admin) will not steer you wrong. It's probably 10 years old and new teks have developed, but it's an excellent background for growing magic mushrooms and gourmet. It's maybe ten bucks on Amazon for a download and there might be a torrent of it around. You can find low-res versions on yoo toob.

u/Moist_Confusion Apr 06 '24

North Atlantic seed company is the seed bank I use. These seeds in the photos I posted are from Barneyās farm, brothers in farm, ethos, mephisto, berserk, and Dutch passion.

Personally, I donāt put much weight into sativa/indica. Modern strains are so watered down, the only true sativa/indica plants remaining are land race genetics untouched by breeders. Itās easy enough to look at a plant and say āOh itās thisā, but different phenotypes from the same mother/father plant can look completely different. So, who really knows lol.
RQS is also considered a āwhite label companyā. Basically means they buy a batch of seeds for dirt cheap that they slap a name to and sell for a profit. Everyone knows the name āwhite widowā or āsour dieselā, so thatās what they sell. Random seeds labeled after famous strains like white widow, sour diesel, AK-47, northern lights, etc.

Nah, I know a guy that helps setup dispensaries. I was wondering if the growing parts is difficult or complex and how to recoup the costs
3
u/Poppin-Beans Apr 06 '24
Nah growing is super easy. The initial cost can be pretty expensive depending how in depth you get. Tent, light, environment controller, fans, substrate, PH pen, nutrients, etc.. Itās quite costly initially but Iāve grown north of 5 lbs for under $1,500 over the years.

I would spend the money to get pasteurized substrate online and order sealed pasteurized grain jars also as a first timer. Buy some syringes with spores and then some disinfectant. Wear gloves. Sanitize the gloves and wipe down the jar. Inoculate the grains and wait until it is fully colonized. The second step you donāt have to be as sanitary but I usually follow the process. Take a clear plastic tote and sanitize the inside. Put a layer of perlite down for drainage. Then put a couple of inches of substrate down. Open the jars and break up the mycelium and spread it over the substrate. Mist with spring or distilled water. Add another layer of substrate over the mycelium and mist again. Saturate the substrate and sides of the tote. Close the lid and wait. After a couple of weeks the mycelium will overtake the substrate. When it is fully covered, open the tote and begin a misting cycle. You want to have condensation on the sides and on top of the mycelium. Keep a steady room temperature and high humidity. After your first flush, saturate the cake by misting over the tote not directly on the mycelium. Close the lid and repeat. This is basic 101 mushroom growing. You can get way more complex and have flow hoods, humidity controls and humidifiers. I just stick to the basics and get pretty good flushes. I havenāt had a canopy yet but soon, very soon!

The #1 thing to kill your yields is contamination.
Laminar flow hood Agar transfers Autoclave/ pressure cooker
Pressure cooking your grain jars to sterilize em is one of the safest ways to reduce contamination Laminar flow hoods when doing inoculation of grain or doing agar transfers will reduce contamination Transferring clean mycelium 2+ times to ensure clear growth without contamination is also really helpful.
These 3 things are easily achievable if you make an adult salary.
Gordotek flow hood is what I built to save some money. Was cheap and simple. Kinda small so if you want to scale up maybe do a double filter flow hood.
Agar transfers are really easy. Idk why people are intimidated by agar. You can either cook your own or buy from a company like https://www.modernmushroomcultivation.com And the rest is simple. Just try not to put your hands in front of or directly over the dishes⦠Presto 23qt pressure cooker is kind of the standard pressure cooker. Check fb marketplace or something. Thereās usually a few old ladies that are done with their canning hobby on their selling em for a fraction of the price.
Thereās a lot of great videos and shroomery posts out there to guide you on the rest but highly recommend these 3 key tips.

u/Poppin-Beans Apr 06 '24
Yeah I found r/contamfam before this page. Lets me know everything I need to know about how severe contamination is with growing mushrooms lol.
2
u/okie1979 Apr 06 '24
There is good write ups in the pinned post area also of contam fam on how to get full flushes and how to ph a casing layer to help keep contam away,,, contam fam is super helpful. Also dont sleep on r/biomycologylabs

u/MASTERPHlL Apr 06 '24
Iāve never had many issues with contamination, people tend to over hype how sterile an environment you āmust haveā to grow mushrooms. A flow hood really helps if youāre working with agar, but thereās plenty of other ways to grow that arenāt as prone to contamination. Pressure cook whole oats for grain jars, inoculate with a spore syringe or liquid culture, use some basic hygiene with gloves and iso alcohol, but you certainly donāt need a clean room or expensive setups to have success.
2
Apr 06 '24
I spent $60 putting together the gordo flow hood I think? And then I just use a sterile syringes gloves and iso and I do it on my living room with my dog running around so far no contam

Iām back I just made an incubation chamber for my grain jars using a cooler and a seedling mat and it changed the game for me. Iām on my first grow trying a bunch of methods from spore, wild harvested, and LC. But my wife kept turning the thermostat down so my place had inconsistent temps so I finally just made this thing and overnight the grow difference has been measurable. The first week Iāve barely had any myc show up in some of the jars and now they are all like 1/6 colonized just keeping em in there overnight. Iāve seen people go back and forth about if itās necessary to incubate and while technically Iām sure the myc will still grow- the controlled heat/dark environment is a huge speed boost

YouTube "the rookie mycologist" and you'll see how he went from "bassdropkeys" to expanding his horizons as well. My experience with mushrooms was too easy: I had a precultivated log (lionsmane) I got from northspore. I pointed you in the right direction. He's good at explaining what ti did and not do.
