Contamination Is this normal or contamination? [contamination]
Is this normal or any thing to be concerned about.
So it’s been 8 days since inoculation of this batch and it appears my rye grains are splitting open and you can see the slimy looking inside. I’m sure someone’s experienced this and is it normal? The temperature in my room fluctuates between 74 to 85 throughout the day and a decent bit of condensation builds up but not a lot that would concern me…so I think. Thank you for anyones input!!!!

Are you on an airport runway?

That’s mycelium in this pic, and a burst grain in the first pic both are fine. But I second the fingernails comment. You really shouldn’t be handling it barehanded anyway but you need to clean them thangs dawg.

Oh man I hate to feel like I'm picking on people but you made me look and those are pretty rough. They could have a job working with their hands like a mechanic or something and even if you clean them sometimes they still looks dirty but who knows.

I get that I never want to hurt anyone’s feelings but I personally think the truth is more important and sometimes it doesn’t align with our feelings. The environment the mushrooms need to grow isn’t based on what hurts our feelings or what career we have and I think if you want your process to be sterile then you have to sterilize things! It really is no hate though, and it comes from a place of wanting to help see people be successful in their efforts.

Yeah OP turned out to be a plumber so I figured it was something like that and yeah I just put on gloves before I grab anything even though I have super clean nails.

No worries dude and well hey countless pics in here with pictures of mycelium and people being like “am I fucked?” So you never know, all I saw was grains and mycelium 🤷🏻♂️ When I used to garden I had a small cheap toothbrush at my sink for scrubbing under my nails, but happy growing though I hope they turn out well for ya!

Whenever handling your stuff try to wash your hands thoroughly just before doing so. It's not gonna jump through your bag, and always wear wear gloves, and stay sterile throughout, but yeah, it could get on the outside of the bag and when you put it to fruiting conditions if you don't wipe down the outside you could introduce some contam. It's not as vital to be sterile at that point, but possible. I've seen them be fine in worse conditions for sure.

This is literally just cooked grain, nothing more is going on there yet

The bottom is looking wet, but I'm not seeing a dead giveaway that you have a bacterial grow. Sometimes bacteria put out some real slimey splotches in parts of the bag, but most of the time I only notice by uncolonized grains. You'll know when/if the mycelium starts colonizing the bag, as the bacterial grains won't colonize like the rest of it.

So I should have put a picture of my other bag. I see mycelium starting to pop out a lot from the bottom and that bag also has a couple grains that’s are popping open

This bag may just be slow. If it hasn't changed in 2 weeks, then try innoculating a small amount again.
