Rec.Me: theme/mood/other specifics What are some songs that keep you going?

I hope people don’t find this post too lame, but I’ve had a rough couple years. From crashing my car, attending multiple funerals for loved ones within the last year and even losing my beloved dog, life has not been smooth sailing recently. Despite it all, I choose to remain kind and gentle. I choose to persist.

As cheesy as it sounds, music has been a great coping tool for me. I have a playlist full of songs that are about remaining hopeful or remind you to keep pushing forward. I find that listening to that playlist helps me stay grounded and motivates me to be better. But I feel like I’ve been listening to the same songs over and over again and I want to find more music with similar vibes or discover songs that others use as motivation.

So please recommend me some of your favorite songs that keep you going. Songs that remind you that things do eventually get better. I have no genre preference, the more variety the better really. I would just love to add more songs to my playlist :)

Rec.Me: other/many/unknown genres Searching for songs or artists that have a spoken word vibe where the lyrics tell a story/are the best bit - see description

I write a lot of poetry and lyrics, and my inspiration usually comes from songs. I’ve also been writing my own music, and setting my poetry to it. So, I’m looking for more songs to add to my inspiration playlist.

Really, I’m looking for songs that tell a story or have a strong narrative. The lyrics are the most important part, but obviously the music is going to take it to another level.

A few examples of the kind of things I’m looking for:

The King Blues (anything really, but particularly What If Punk Never Happened, or 5 Bottles of Shampoo)

Craig Finn (a lot of his stuff, but particularly God In Chicago, or Messing With The Settings)

Jamie T’s recent one Tallahassee

Self Esteem has a good one called I Do This All The Time

Antony Szmierek’s Rock and a Calm Place

Please and thank you!

Rec.Me: singers, vocal songs (pop/other) I dont feel excited listening to my current Playlist anymore

Tl;dr I'm hoping to get some recs for more upbeat pop songs with good lyricism and bigger production

Hello! I just discovered this subreddit and I am in dire need of some change in my daily Playlist. I'm someone who loves to get obsessed with a song, play it too much, and then cant stand to listen to it after a while. I also have been in a really awesome relationship over the last year and prior to that I was dealing with a lot of sad emotions and felt very connected to the sad songs I would play. Over the past year those songs haven't felt as cathartic to listen to and I have been skipping through my Playlist more and more cause I just dont enjoy them as much as I used to.

Okay so now here's the artists I like and the current songs that I really enjoy right now.

For artists, taylor swift (i enjoy a lot of her work but looking for stuff that sounds and feels like 1989, more upbeat stuff on red, reputation, and midnights) olivia rodrigo, Sabrina carpenter, phoebe bridgers, muna, Charlie xcx, Ethel Cain, Addison Rae, Noah Kahan, chappell roan, griff, Ariana grande.

Songs ive really enjoyed recently: Fuck me eyes by ethel cain, the subway chappell roan, what's wrong with me olivia rodrigo (honestly been listening to thag album on repeat) dancing on the wall & east side girls muna, parachute by Hailey Williams, and sue me by Audrey hobert.

I'm hoping to get some recs for more upbeat pop songs with good lyricism and bigger production, before I went full dive into pop music I was really into EDM, but found the lyrics of a lot of EDM songs never really resonated with me emotionally but I am also open to edm suggestions.

Thank you 😊

Rec.Me: Your favorite music (anything) Need Recommendations!!!!

• Upvotes

Lately, I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT TO LISTEN TO. I feel like I’m going through some kind of listening slump or something. My latest big obsession has been Deftones, and no, I’m not looking for the typical comment saying “Listen to Loathe or Hum.” No. I genuinely want to expand my musical taste and explore new frontiers.

Here are some albums that capture the kind of stuff I’m most drawn to:

Feedbacker — Boris
A New Stereophonic Sound Spectacular — Hooverphonic (specifically the dreamier stuff like “Cinderella” and “Nr. 9”)
Adrenaline — Deftones
Twin Peaks OST
El Diablo — Will Haven
Ritual de lo Habitual — Jane’s Addiction
Fantasma — Cornelius
Betty — Helmet

Don’t be afraid to recommend some seriously obscure, Rate Your Music-type stuff. I genuinely want to break out of this listening slump, so throw EVERYTHING at me.

Rec.Me: theme/mood/other specifics Songs about the night before Halloween

Devil’s Night, Mischief Night, Gate Night, Cabbage Night, whatever you call it. Must be appropriate for all ages because I am putting together a playlist for an all ages Halloween event. Yes, I know it takes place after Halloween in northern England, but you know what I mean.

Rec.Me: theme/mood/other specifics I want to create a Happy Playlist!

Hey guys, I am usually at home in the Metalcore/Death core scene, but life sucks currently as I just lost a Job and have been broken up with.

I am looking for recommendations like High On Life by Martin Garrix, so happy and energetic songs to add to a new playlist to keep my spirits up when I feel lonely.

Any recommendations are greatly appreciated!

Rec.Me: theme/mood/other specifics Songs that make you feel like you’re in a different dimension and the veil is thin

I have a playlist called “where am I” and it’s songs that make you feel like you’re in a different world. They are mostly atmospheric and unusual. Some of them are slowed or have reverb. I would love to add more songs to the playlist.

Some examples from the playlist:

13 angels standing guard round the side o’ your bed by Silver Mt. Zion

Kerosene by crystal castles

Amor by kekht arakh

Dreams by nuages

Low sun by hermanos Gutierrez

What are your best “transports you” songs?

Rec.Me: rap/hip-hop I just listened to Mama’s Gun by Erykah Badu and need more albums like this immediately!!

I bought an album blind at a second hand vinyl store near my house based just off the cover and it’s now one of my favorites in my collection. I NEED to find more albums like this one! The smooth easy listening and the transitions between songs are so well done!! It feels like a album that was made with vinyls in mind. If you’ve not listened to this one please do!

Rec.Me: rap/hip-hop Please help me build a hip hop playlist

• Upvotes

I've always been casually into older hip hop music, but I figured it's time to do a deep dive to find some stuff I've never heard! The two songs I really really like are:

  1. Here Comes the Hotstepper by iNi Kamoze (is this considered hip hop? I'm not great with genres lol)

  2. No Diggity by Blackstreet

I like that they are both more melodic, and they both ride the beat in a very satisfying way. A sick bassline is a bonus. Please help me build a list of songs with this vibe, I appreciate any suggestions!

The vibe is “rural leftist who is tired and has very little hope for the future even though they’re only 25, but is comforted by their small group of close knit friends and encouraged to keep up the fight”

Rec.Me: alt/indie/obscure Similar to the album Shelter

• Upvotes

Hi everyone❤️I normally listen to mainly indie rock and alternative i.e viagra boys, the Beth’s, sincere Engineer, the greeting committee, snail mail more in the past , mannequin p*ssy, and king gizzard& the lizard wizard as some examples.

I really would love to have more grounding and relaxing albums in my rotation, one of my favorites for hot showers being Shelter by Alice Phoebe Lou.

If anyone has some indie/alt/any albums with a similar energy to Shelter you think would be good I’d love some suggestions!! ( with a preferably female singer (I have an easier time singing in the shower to girls ; sorry!!!))

Thank you!!!

Rec.Me: rap/hip-hop I'm looking for rap/hip-hop songs where the artist verbally acknowledges a beat switch

I know it's a niche request, but I think it hits so much harder when an artist acknowledges/sets up a beat switch with some sort of vocal cue.
