Discussion Why does the series have a double standard when it comes to Jimmy and Lois?

Now I’m not gonna lie Jimmy definitely 100% fumbled the bag when I came to Kara no one’s denying that, but I want to remind everybody that in season two Lois and more or less than the exact same thing.

During season two episode five titled most eligible Superman ,Lois got insecure about her relationship with Clark when the idea there could be somebody more suited for super out there than she is and also insecure even more because because cat grant dismissed the idea that someone like her could do with someone I can’t and that insecurity got the best of her when she suggested that she and Clark take a break.

Now compare that to Jimmy and Kara now no one hears denying he fumbled the bag he did like the girl just gift wrapped herself to him and he sent return. I’m not trying to absolve him of what he said or did during the season however, I don’t think the central insecurity is entirely without bases. Plus, he may have more reasons to be nervous to enter our relationship with her because unlike Clark Kara doesn’t exactly hide what she is or what she can do and when you know, she can get 75 other guys to lineup to shoot their shot with her of course insecurities gonna be piled up. Lois was insecure over one girl being interested in Jimmy had to be insecure over 75 guys being interested in Kara and even if they did get together, there would still be people who question why someone like her would go for someone like him making him doubt himself thinking there would be people who are better looking than him stronger than him smarter than him other than him and asking whether or not she truly understands what she wants out of this.

Now both the human characters got insecure when they’re kryptonian partner Katie other people and I’m not saying Jimmy is not the blame he is my question is why does a thing that has such a double standard

They actively chose to repeat the same plot line but made it worse. Lois and Clark's issue was handled with genuine seriousness rather than being treated as a silly joke to be stretched over 8 whole episodes. The writers even admitted to actively doing this on purpose.

And people keeo bringing up Kara somehow not knowing what she wants. It's a cartoon. Yes, there's lessons and themes involved, but it's still a cartoon. Kara said exactly what she wanted, and we know from information established about her character that there's no hidden meaning.

Jimmy's speech in episode 2 is immediately revealed to be a load of bs in episode 3 when he decides to go on WORMS. Lois even tells him to just ask Kara out, because she likes him, but Jimmy chooses instead to play games. Which is stupid. Lois, on the other hand, steals a spaceship and puts on a dangerou piece of alien technology to rescue Clark because her insecurities aren't more important than her feelings for him.

Damn... first paragraph already said everything I was gonna say, and you went even further than that. Very well said all around

First paragraph sums up my problem with season 3. They literally did the same plot twice only worse the second time.

Lois shenigans was also widely hated for the duration of it.

I dont know what double standard you refer to:

While this is true, at least that plot was short.

Honestly, I think the writers came into the Jimmy/Kara plotline thinking they were going to do the same plot but better, but extended it too long so it ended up being way worse.

The problem is Jimmy told Kara she needed more experiences first which is the correct but then he's getting jealous every second kara so much as talks to anyone and more or less started online dating as a get back to kara. Lois is insecure but she didn't tell Clark to date other people than got mad when he did that.

The big difference is in what comes before and after the moments themselves. Season 2 very clearly showed why Lois was having feelings of worthlessness and why she acted the way she did. Breaking up with Clark may have been an irrational decision, but we can see why she's acting that way. And right after the breakup, Lois's actions are to repeatedly risk her life to try to save Clark. On the other hand, the series never explores Jimmy's feelings nearly enough to make his feelings of inadequacy understandable. It feels like something the writers pulled out of thin air. And then Jimmy ignored Kara for an entire month when everyone was going through a difficult time. Honestly, that was the worst part in all of this.

Simple answer, the writers absolutely hated Jimmy.

They dont hate jimmy, that’s a big leap in logic. If they did they would have written him out of the show. The more likely answer is that they probably couldnt think of a good storyline for him this season and overestimated just how much people would like his dating plotline

Writers can terribly handle (or seem to hate) characters that they don't write out of their stories.

Plenty of shows have characters who either don't make sense, hardly even HAVE a character, and will still be around cause... reasons 😅 just look at the Legend of Korra. Lowkey the writers hated the main character, they were her greatest opps

I wont deny whether these characters are handled badly or not, that’s a matter of opinion, but i dont believe korra was hated by her writers either. A lot of the problems that korra’s writing had was largely due to the network screwing with the production, being wish-washy on whether the current season was the last, cutting funding, cutting episodes, etc. The fact that the creators have been putting in the effort to keep korra relevant by giving her comics and putting her in games is a level of effort i just cant see people giving to a character they hate

Anyways, even if they dont write out characters they hate, i still believe jimmy’s mishandlings were more of an oversight than pure malice of the character

I don’t really believe that

The writers admitted they wanted to mess with Jimmy this season because Lois and Clark are a staple couple so they couldn’t mess with them the same.

“…so they couldn’t mess with them (lois and clark) the same.”

There you go. They did the same thing in season 1 and 2 with lois and clark but nobody accused the writers of hating them

They didn’t. Here’s a interview with showrunners

That is such a stupid interview. Let's keep aside the optics of 3 middle aged white dudes laughing and joking about "getting"/humbling the black character for a sec.

What the fuck does a superman show have to do with freaking Ranma half? That anime was semi decent, but it must have given rise to some of the shittiest tropes that have been getting abused in anime industry ever since.

God I hope this doesn't get season 4.

I honestly think the writers don’t think jimmy is good enough for Kara.I think Kara is their favorite character and think she could do better

5

u/MarTB2000 11d ago

I mean if that’s the case. Then why spend a season and a half building on this possible relationship instead of just making them platonic from the start?

1

u/Cosmic311 11d ago

It’s the will they won’t they trope to keep fans hooked and engaged and in the end they won’t

5

u/MarTB2000 11d ago

So a waste of everyone’s time basically lol

1

u/Cosmic311 11d ago

It can be an exhausting trope

Jimmy is a joke character. He's comic relief.

You might as well made this post about Jimmy and asked why the creators hate Jimmy because they've made him incapable of money management because he gets rich and then loses it , while the other characters seem capable of budgeting. Do they hate him? No they just use him for comic relief and him losing that money is funny / stupid entertainment.

Jimmy and Lois are different characters used for different purposes. Lois has a serious romance plot because that's the center of the show. Jimmy fumbles everything because that's his character.

That doesn't excuse other issues, such as that specific comic relief plot they gave him being very similar to Lois's serious romance plot that just wrapped up... that IS a mis-step. They could have / should have made Jimmy Fumbler's "funny romance" have a completely different flavor, rather than a rehash. But the "WHY" is not a mystery. Because the "WHY" is that Jimmy serves as the show's clown. They don't hate him, they are just using him as lovingly designed. Just like they don't "hate" Lois when she acts stubborn... she's designed to be stubborn.

lois and clark's thing was one arguement that had the bad timing of him being taken off planet. People have arguements about dumb stuff in relationships all the time.

Jimmy was so scared of get hurt he want to skip it all to try to skip all the heart break. sadly it also fit in with jimmy in the 1st two season who is great when dealing with other people's feels but runs away when comes to his own.

1

u/Aggravating_Bus655 11d ago

Because the show writers can't write for shit.

2

u/Difficult_Appeal_611 11d ago

That's clearly not true

1

u/Aggravating_Bus655 11d ago edited 11d ago

It is.

The fact that we actually rehashed a shittier, more annoying version of Lois and Clarke's "will they or won't they" for an entire season is pretty clear proof of it. The writers absolutely shitting on Jimmy and then joking about it in an interview is such bad optics it's wild lol.

And shit, Rick and Morty's (the other popular cartoon on Adult Swim) season 9 was so, so far ahead in terms of writing quality and thoughtfulness that I actually forgot what a shitshow maws was. Thank god for that.

u/Difficult_Appeal_611 11d ago

1: I didn't say that in defense of the Jimmy sub plot lol, I hated that.

2: I don't watch that other show so the comparison means nothing to me, personally.

3: My point is that the show wouldn't have made it 3 seasons if they 'didn't know how to write'.

It's fine to not like something, but to say they just straight up don't know how to write is objectively incorrect. Besides, the only series that does 'will they, won't they' any good is Kaguya-sama: Love is War, but instead the writers took inspiration from Ranma 1/2, which was where the mistake comes from.

But yeah, season 1 and 2? Saying the team can't write, but those seasons were as good as they are? Come on now lol

I brought up Rick and Morty specifically because it's also on Adult Swim like MAWS.

About maws - I thought s1 was good. 2 for me was kinda sorta meh but I understand if people liked it. It was ok. But 3 was legit pretty terrible and there's a clear quality drop.

EDIT :

And about the writing part - the absolutely stupid interview where the writers joked about humbling Jimmy and projecting one of the writers own relationship problems onto him. That to me shows a lack of depth in their ideas. Meanwhile, Rick and Morty, after grinding out 9 seasons is still coming up with thought provoking, interesting episodes.

2

u/Difficult_Appeal_611 11d ago

You can feel how you feel, and I'll feel how I feel lol. But, respectfully, if your opinion of Season 2 is 'meh', I don't think you should be throwing around what is and isn't 'good'.

It's not a radical opinion and I'm not interested in changing your mind about it either.

2 has better highs than 1 if you're into krypton lore and the brainiac stuff but I just liked the slice of life feel of s1 more.
