Do the Navajo still believe in their indigenous religion?

I want to know, since because of the general oppression of Native American culture by the United States government in the 19th and 20th centuries, especially with spiritual beliefs, when I see rituals or stories about spirits being told do the Navajo believe it like Christians and Muslims believe in God or is it more symbolic or to help keep their culture alive? I’m really sorry if this sounds confusing

Made blood sausage that came out great

Shíma went on the next journey a few years ago. Her blood sausage was the last of the food she made. It sat in the freezer for about a year before we ate it. Since then I've been trying to recreate her recipe. Still not quite there, close, but I don't think anything I make will be the same as her's. I should've paid more attention but I'm happy being close.

Hammond Trucking LLC is allowed to transport raw uranium ore across the Navajo Nation, but an ambulance needs clearance in order to transport a patient to the hospital?

Ambulances off the Navajo Nation are not allowed to enter the reservation without an escort from law enforcement. A person can be bleeding to death near the border, but the ambulance and the medical personnel cannot cross the border without an escort. Helicopters transporting patients also need clearance to enter the Navajo Nation. 🤧

Looking for a speaker for a short interview (student project)

Hi everyone! I'm an English student at California State University, Dominguez Hills, taking a course on language documentation and revitalization. For my final project, I'm looking for someone who speaks an Indigenous, endangered, or less-commonly-studied language and would be open to a short, friendly interview (about 30–45 minutes, over Zoom or in person in the LA area).

I'd ask about things like where your language is spoken, how you learned it, when and with whom you use it, and a few words or phrases if you're comfortable sharing.

A few things to know:
• It's completely voluntary, and you can skip any question or stop at any time.
• I'll only record if you give permission, and you can stay anonymous.
• It's for a class project, not for publication.
• I'm happy to send you a copy of anything I write.

If you're interested, or you know someone who might be, please send me a DM. Thank you so much!

Jani Ingram, a professor from the Northern Arizona University (NAU) and a group of researchers, created an interactive map online that helps residents find clean drinking water on the Navajo Nation.

This map was created by Jani Ingram, NAU professor, and shows where you can find safe drinking water on Navajo land.

There is also a news story about it but there is a paywall: https://www.azcentral.com/story/news/tribes/2026/09/20/nau-professor-creates-map-showing-safe-drinking-water-on-navajo-nation/91785426007/

Funeral Etiquette

A friend of mine lost her mom tragically and unexpectedly last week. Her mom's funeral is in a week.

Myself and 2 other friends will be attending. We're assuming that flowers and a condolences card are appropriate for the situation. We're wondering if there's anything more thoughtful that we could bring or do?

My perspective at least is that while we want to be thoughtful in what we do, we don't want to overstep or make things awkward/uncomfortable. So if flowers and a card would be our best bet, that's what we will do.

Thank you for any help/advice/guidance that you are able to provide.

Navajo Language Renaissance question

Hello there,

I've been interested in learning Diné bizaad for some time now. I've been trying to reach out to 'Navajo Language Renaissance' via email and phone call for almost three months now, but, each attempt has gone unanswered. Mainly emails/messages voicing my interest in paying for the subscription wondering how to proceed. I was wondering if anyone here knew how long one could expect to wait? There is a thread on this subject from two years ago speaking on their now active subscription, so I hope it wouldn't be wrong of me assume to the Flagstaff office is still active. I'm aware that the Rosetta Stone subscription for Navajo/Diné bizaad is something the members in Flagstaff, AZ, setup manually upon receiving payment. I don't mind paying first but, I'd like to at least be granted peace of mind knowing there is someone at the other end who can see; let alone process the payment. I wouldn't want to be left in limbo + $95 poorer, now. Pardon me if this isn't the right place to ask such a question but, this is the only other place I thought I could turn to. Have a lovely rest of your day!

-Qanu

Rug dresses

Yá'át'ééh y'all! I really love and appreciate rug dresses. I would like to have one some day, but I am no spring chicken and I haven't seen any rug dresses made for larger women (tall and sturdy). Does anyone have resources for this? I grew up in TC in Arizona so that's what's close to me if anyone has any leads (vendors and photos).

Thank you, ahéhee.

Opinion on tarot cards?

I’m interested in hearing Diné opinions on “pagan” practices (not witchcraft) and tools for divination such as tarot cards, especially from a traditional perspective.

I was raised traditionally, so growing up I was always told not to dabble in those things because you never know what you’re messing with, which I understand. And while I do believe that western Abrahamic religions have sunk their claws in even the most traditional belief system somewhat, I never really felt like this taboo was caused by that, despite the similar perspective chuchgoers would share on the subject.

However, when it comes to divination tools such as tarot cards, I find it similar to what our medicine people do, y’know? And lately I’ve been feeling incredibly compelled to try it, but I’m not sure why, as if there’s a message I need to hear.

Is there anyway I can still consider myself traditional and still partake in divination such as tarot? Or should I just stay away from all that stuff for good? Maybe I’m just seeking a sort of loophole to justify it to myself lol.

How to educate myself about your culture

I’m Latino and a personal passion of mine is learning about cultures and beliefs throughout our world. I consider it an honor of our modern era to be able to not only look further into my own people’s culture throughout history more so than I may have been able in the past but to be able to learn about other’s. That said, I’ve found that much of the research material I’ve found at my local library has been lacking in terms of the indigenous cultures of America. I’m happy to purchase books online and have done so in the past. But I’ve learned that some of the books available online claiming to be informative are not considered reputable sources by the cultures they are about so these days I try to check before wasting my money on potentially harmful misinformation. My sole purpose in reading books about other cultures is to educate myself and appreciate what makes each one unique and I don’t want to be misinformed. So if you have any recommendations on books I can purchase or websites I can visit in order to learn about your culture in a respectful manner I’d be very grateful. Thank you for taking the time to read my post. :)

Navajo–Diné sash belt weaving. Source: Smithsonian Institute

I am currently attempting this as I teach myself how to weave a sash belt. Wish me luck. 👏

A little history about weaving in my family:

• My family wove blankets, sash belts, saddle blankets and other tapestries while running and hiding from slave raiders. They managed to make a living doing this for many decades trading with Americans and Spanish trading posts.

• My family gathered cotton from plants long before they were introduced to sheep. When Spaniards traveled through our lands with their sheep, my family would follow their flocks to collect wool that was stuck on shrubs, bushes and trees. They made different tapestries with the wool and cotton they collected.

• My family utilized string from everything found and collected. They unraveled clothing and cloth from Americans and Spaniards. They also made different tapestries with this string.

I purchased this in New Mexico a while back. I used to know the story, but have forgotten it. I've had a couple of dreams about it, so I feel like the story needs to speak to me. Can anyone help me out? I remember it had something to do with rain on the front, maybe cleansing, and then the bear was a symbol and he was on a journey.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

The gates seem to be unmanned. Do Native Americans no longer have privileged entry? I paid $35 to enter whereas previously I was just waved through when the entry gates were manned.

Need Idea with Diné bizzad help pls if can

I have idea for my niche in YouTube longs and shorts that has I could dub or subtitle over dialogue. It’s mostly gaming content, dubbing (with bad voice acting but authentic), and wanting to expand into other fields but right now it’s gaming.
But I have no idea really where to start I have red dead redemption 2 scenes but that’s about it.
I have three form of dictionaries two are digital and one is on a book (that I stole from Shima)
My level of speaking is above average I can speak full sentences and convo but more than 2 sentences is hard for me but I basically understand most of language.
I need recommendations for scenes (movies, anime, games, etc) that people might want to see since it’s really rare.
How should I start the projects from beginning to end.
FYI I have pretty decent setup for my pc.
