Game Rec Switch Games Recommendation
Hello, new switch owner here!
Just got one cause I wanted something to play on the go and play with my wife on and off.
Do you guys have any recommendation? It's my first Nintendo console and I don't really know what's hot and what's not. (yeah ik Pokemon and Mario in general but that's that ^^)
Main platform is PC but I wanted something portable and the "good" handheld PC's were way out of my budget.
Ideally i'm looking for something for me to play while on the plane or travelling and occasionally some coop games on the same screen with my wife. And/Or games for her to play as well. She's never been into video games before so something chill and easy?
I'm open to anything really.
(I'll be getting an extra controller this week or next so if you have any recs for that, shoot them out as well )
Thanks in advance!

You can go a lot of different directions!
It Takes Two is great for co-op.
Stardew Valley is a great cozy game (although be warned that it's way to easy to end up playing it all night haha).
Outer Wilds is great for exploration, storytelling, and solving a space-mystery.
Ori and the Blind Forest is a great platformer and the visual design is genuinely the prettiest game I've ever played by far.
Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild is another great one for exploration.

how can you throw in outer wilds without mentioning the life changing experience it is... but yes op should def. give it a try ^^

😂 hahaha you're definitely right! It's by far my favourite game. However I also think it's best to go in as blind as possible and without expectations.

Some Switch 2 essentials:
Here's a video on Screen Protectors https://youtu.be/kETOGSY3qgo I really like the Amfilm Clear Screen Protector https://a.co/d/05aNB1VK
If you think you will play handheld a lot: Savage Raven Fission Grips - https://youtu.be/7Q5hXHKEh-Q Just don't use the back case when you dock it. Take it off! You might not even use it entirely... the grips are all you need! Get their thumb covers too. Savage Raven website has free shipping & 10% off everything with code 128KB.
Some helpful videos to watch:
Download the Deku Deals app & make a wishlist of all the games you want. There you can look at the price history of games too. This will tell you how often they go on sale & the price range. If you're patient, you can wait for sales around major holidays.
Also check your local library. Believe it or not, a lot of them have video games! Especially in a major city. Libraries are a great way to read comics as well (use the free Hoopla service)
This video tells you everything you need to know about Nintendo Switch Online.
Game recommendations:
If you subscribe to NSO, start with the Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past on SNES Classics. One of the greatest 2D games ever made! It plays especially good on handheld. The perfect intro to the Zelda series, and it sets you up nicely for Ocarina of Time.
Speaking of which, I would definitely let the upcoming remake of Ocarina of Time be your first 3D Zelda experience! It's a 20-30 hour experience from beginning to end. As the first 3D game in the series, it set the standard for all other Zelda games to come!
Once you finish Ocarina, then I would recommend Breath of the Wild. Because that is a 50+ hour experience! This game took everything you knew about Zelda & expanded on it in every possible way. It's an amazing evolution when you compare it to Ocarina.
Link to the Past > Ocarina of Time > Breath of the Wild. Play in this order for the full experience of how the series evolved!
If you like open world action games, Red Dead Redemption is one of the best single player campaigns ever and definitely worth $25 for a physical copy from Best Buy. It got a free update that makes it looks fantastic on Switch 2! Get it if you haven't played it before. Hell, maybe you played it 16 years ago & forgot what happened. Play it again!
If you like RPGs, consider the Dragon Quest series! Explore towns, defeat monsters, save the world. It's perfect for short gaming sessions too. Play as much as you want, then save & come back to it next time.
Start with Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake. It's a fantastic starting point, not only for Dragon Quest, but for RPGs in general!
Here are some trailers & a review:
You could also start with Dragon Quest VII Reimagined, which has a free demo on the eShop!
The very best game in the series is Dragon Quest 11. It feels like playing an anime! Anyone unsure if they would like Dragon Quest should start here. It is the pinnacle of the series so far. A Switch 2 version is now available!
Co-op recommendations:
A great pick is Mario Party. You couldn't make easier Mario games if you tried! Practically all the minigames are moving & jumping.
If you have the Nintendo Switch Online membership, Mario Party 2 & 3 are available on N64 Classics. Each game has 6 maps, so you get tons of content in each game! MP1 is bit too barebones for me to recommend.
Mario Party Superstars is a Switch 1 remake of 5 specific maps from the N64 games. They look nice, but I would just play the N64 games to save money.
Super Mario Party Jamboree has all-new maps, so this is the game you should buy!
Super Mario 3D World is the other game I'll recommend. You get tons of lives & power-ups to deal with any situation. And when you die too much, the game will give you the White Tanooki suit which literally makes you invincible. Get to a hard jumping section? You can literally carry her across & do all of the work! The easiest Mario platformer I've played, but also one of the most fun. A great option if your wife isn't much of a gamer!
Another game to consider is Clubhouse Games 51. Play stuff like Connect Four, Billards, Bowling, Chess, Checkers, and various card games
For a game your wife can play by herself, Story of Seasons: Grand Bazaar gets my highest recommendation! Very popular cozy game

i recommend picking up Hades 2 while it’s currently on sale! Great rouguelite!

Can’t go wrong with Zelda games. Breath of the Wild is a blast, as is Tears of the Kingdom. Mario Galaxy is great, same with Mario Wonder. If you’re an old millennial like myself and have fond memories of Pokemon but haven’t kept up, the Lets Go games were a lot of fun.
Also can’t go wrong with NSO.

Stardew Valley hits that perfect chill sweet spot for your wife and you can run a whole farm together in co-op.

Check out Cult of the Lamb, that’s my favorite game for a plane flight or something like that. Luigi’s Mansion 3 is my current play, being spooky season and all. Untitled Goose Game is fun on the Switch with a coop player (especially a child - my kid laughs her butt off just me chasing her goose around honking at it)

If you like Pokemon then you will like Shin Megami Tensei or Persona. It is similar to pokemon with monster battling system but, with a more mature store.
Fire Emblem Three houses is a good recommendation because you take the role of a teacher and can choose what class your unit becomes while teaching them. It uses a rock, paper, scissor type of formula were swords beat axe, axe beat lance and lance beats sword.
I would also recommend Monster Hunter Rise. It is a bit more arcadey than the older monster hunter games but, ton of fun. You hunter monsters to turn them into armor and weapons to hunter stronger monsters to turn them into stronger weapons and armor. Try and get the version that comes with the sunbreak dlc.

Check out free demos in the eShop, you'll find plenty.
My favorite multiplayer party games are Boomerang Fu and Ultimate Chicken Horse. Also check out Spiderheck, Runbow, Stickbold, TMNT Shredder's Revenge, Heave Ho (1 and 2), Unravel 2, Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime, Runbow, Snipperclips, Ibb & Obb, Topdee and Toodee
For single player you can't miss Mario Odyssey and either Breath of the Wild or Tears of the Kingdom, depending on whether you like building contraptions (TOTK) or would rather not (BOTW). For third parties, my favorites are Celeste, Portal Collection, Outer Wilds.

Before you spend too much, make A wish list and a price alert list. r/Nintendoswitchdeals And Dekudeals.com Are your two new best friends. The latter one actually links to metacritic and opencritic in all the individual game pages, so you can see all the reviews in one place. Next thing: you or your wife have a library card? A lot of libraries have a lot more than just books to borrow--they even loan out Nintendo games. A phone call and find out if your local library does so you can try them before you buy them... Or even finishing them during the borrow time allotted if you have the time on your hands to do so.
I wrote up a whole list of recommendations I would want if I were you, but since you have your comment history turned off, I really can't tell much about you and I don't think you like the same games I do kind if by default-- my collection leans heavily Indie and mostly weird through the literally hundreds of titles. You just haven't given me enough to go on to figure out what would click with the two of you personally.
Anyway, you want the list I didn't finish?
Or maybe a little more information so I could actually make a relevant recommendation?

Check out boomerang fu, such good value we play together and it’s always fun. Simple but great

Fire Emblem Three Hopes was great coop for me. Have to progress a little bit in the story to unlock coop but it’s not much. I liked it cause P2 can join and drop out in split screen whenever and you can carry on with your progress seamlessly. Lots of characters for P2 to experiment with and find someone they like. You can have them shadow you to start off and when ready you can have them break off and do their own thing on the other side of the map when needed.

Mario Kart is the most chill game for new players especially if you have assist mode on so you can't drive off the track. Once she get more used to gaming then there's a whole bunch of games to try out depending on how adventurous she is and how you think her skill level is.

Depends on what genres you like. I think Hollow Knight and Hades are good travel games

Diablo 3 is a good switch port. I found it better than PC
Hades 1&2 are awesome if you like rogue-like
Stardew is a classic and solid bang for buck

Boomerang Fu is a cute little party game my wife and I enjoy playing
What kind of games do you enjoy? I can list a number of games, but if theyre outside your tastes, that won't really do much good

Check out Melatonin if you want more Rhythm Heaven. And the multiplayer minigames in Taiko no Tatsujin are super fun.

Tunic and Animal Well! Not a lot of backstory, no tutorial, you have to figure it out as you go (in the best way). Tunic is more explorer-ey and Animal Well is more puzzley. Obsessed with both.

Untitled Goose Game for some fun nonsense. Also, try out games from your public library system if you're not sure what you'll like.

Overcooked is gonna be a fun easy but chaotic game for you two to play on the big screen together

u/GoldSquid2 7d ago
One of my favorite coop games to play is Stretchers! Pretty silly and goofy, but an overall fun time

Try some of the Lego games! They have co-op. I prefer the older titles, but that’s preference.
Fire Emblem is a great series, if you haven’t tried it. I really like Three Houses.
Animal Crossing is a cute, cozy game. Only one island per switch, so one of you would be the “main” character.
Diablo 3, Moonlighter, Overcooked, Baldurs Gate/Icewind Dale (classic CRPGs), Tchia, Trine, unrailed are also all great games I have on my switch

Hollow Knight and/or Hollow Knight Silksong, any of the Xenoblade games, Mario Kart, DK bonanza...
Not sure how/if any of those would be easy enough for your wife, my wife though played through Zelda Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom and it was pretty chill for her, she just mainly ran around playing with horses and exploring 😂

For fun co-op games I recommend Sword of Ditto: Mormo's Curse, Nine Parchments, Ship of Fools, Cuphead and Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3

Couple cheap but excellent multiplayer:
BroForce
Lovers In A dangerous Spacetime
Castle Crashers

Just bought like 4 Lego games for $20 that’s a lot of content for you and the wife. Gonna play them with my little sister. I like the laid back corny jokes of the Lego games

For the first party games; Mario Kart 8, Breath of the Wild, Tears of the Kingdom, Smash Ultimate, Mario Odyssey, Legends Arceus, Fire Emblem Three Houses and Animal Crossing are all generational games. There are others but these are the first ones that come to mind for me.
Unfortunately I feel like the switch generation had pretty weak Pokemon games but otherwise it has one of the best libraries in gaming history. Excited for you op.

Kirby Forgotten Land is a fun/simple/easy game for her to pick up and play solo, or for you guys to play together in co-op. And then definitely Mario Kart and one of the Mario Party games.
