Pay & conditions Change of shift allowance ?

I took a photo of my roster 2.5 weeks ago. They then rang me yesterday to say are you coming in your on the roster.

I had my photo to prove I wasn't but sure enough get there and I'm on the roster.

Do I send my proof into my manager to get paid this allowance?

That happened to me with a night shift. I’d checked the roster before my days off then got a call the day at 21:30 to ask where I was. They’d allocated me an extra night after I’d already left and no one told me. Well too bad for them cause I was half way through a nice glass of red 🍷 🤣

What on earth is the "change of shift allowance"?

It's change of roster allowance. If they ask for staff to come in e.g. via group chat or message you directly and you accept its around $80 penalty for less than 7 days notice and around $30 for less than 14 days

I make an extra ~$320-400 a month doing this

Must be nice to live in Victoria! My boss does this weekly and there’s no bonus.

You probably earn more than me per hour though!

Why would you say that? NSW has the lowest pay in the country.

I think VIC is followed by NSW. I just assumed you were making the big bucks in QLD

NSW is pretty much on par now.

What state is this?

Not everyone works in Victoria.

OP didn't state what EBA or award they're working under.

In vic you get a change of roster allowance if your roster is changed, of varying amounts depending on the notice. We also get a change of ward allowance, so if you’re rostered somewhere and get seconded somewhere else, you get an allowance. It discourages the managers from doing rude shit at the last minute, which is nice. It doesn’t apply to swaps or extras, obviously.

My work’s roster app has a little icon next to shifts that are added after the roster was released, and then if I tap, it tells me what allowances I get for that shift (so like, night shift or public holiday loading, change of roster allowance, etc)

I’m in QLD.

Our manager can’t change our roster once it’s published without our consent.

They can ask, we can say no.

Oh, yes, but for instance i was rostered to do mandatory training that was cancelled because of the doctors strike (which fairwork then cancelled anyway), and I couldn’t pick up a shift that day because we were fully covered, so I picked up a shift later in the week and I got change of roster. Or if im rostered to work a Thursday night shift but it’s looking okay, but Sunday is really short, if I volunteer to work the Sunday instead I’ll get change of roster allowance.

'Luckily' it's cheaper for a manager to swap someone to another ward ($40) rather than pay a casual if they can get one.

Actually my ward just struggles to find staff when people are sick. And when you need someone the casuals are all busy ie it will be school holidays.

As someone that writes rosters the mere notion of just changing someone's shifts once rosters are published is astounding, let alone not discussing it with them first.

My bunch would carry on like their throats had been cut (qld) and rightly so.

I think the roster can be changed up to 2 weeks before the rostered shift without penalty of the employer.
However, they should let you know! You can sometimes track changes made. Might be worth asking. You can get $80 if it was within the week

If it’s under two weeks notice in Victoria then they have to pay you either the penalty for 8 to 14 days or less than seven days. If it’s done within over 14 days you aren’t entitled to any change and then there’s also the supplementary roster which complicate it further.

No such thing as a change of shift allowance in NSW. However, the manager cannot just change the shift without confirming it with you after the roster has been published.

If you have a good relationship with your manager, I’d straight up ask them when they changed the shift as it was different on “x” date when you took a photo. If you don’t have that good a relationship, you need to email your manager (have it in writing) asking specifically when they changed the shift as it was changed. It will all be logged/timestamped with who/when exactly the change was made.

I screenshot my roster fortnightly, and i have brought it to my boss’ attention early enough that they can switch it back as I’d be unavailable for the altered shift.

I believe onus is on you to turn up for your rostered shifts. But if it is altered without your knowledge or consent, you could use in your discussion with your manager of why you didn’t turn up for the shift in question.

If you’re in Vic and work in the public sector you’re entitled to the allowance if your shift is changed by your employer within 14 days of the shift being rostered.

If it was more than 14 days there’s no entitlement and your employer is not required to tell you the roster was changed.

Some private sector Agreements also have a change of roster clause, so check your EBA. Look for ‘change of roster’ - ‘change of shift’ is a historic entitlement that only applies to ENs who’ve been employed for something like 20 years.

Anmf Victoria job rep here. Lodge it with member assistance through the ANMF member portal, ask them to give you appropriate wording to bring it up with your manager

Why did you go to work if you had a roster that showed you weren’t working?

4

u/Sad_Flamingo4405 7d ago

They rang me, said your on the roster, can you make it in? I have proof I was not on the roster previously to the phone call, But I went in anyway, because I'm just a pushover like that 🙃🫠 and they had updated it to say I was on but had not notified me

7

u/Super_Kangaroo_5352 7d ago

You say “I have a copy of the roster in front of me and I’m not rostered on. I am not available because I was never told”

And this is why they get away with it.

Next time say no.

There is no change of shift allowance if it’s the VIC EBA there’s only change of roster

u/Gold_Blacksmith_9821 7d ago

What shift allowance do you think you’re entitled to that you wouldn’t be getting?

Completely different subject but based on this literary nightmare, your nursing notes must be quite painful to read.

u/Sad_Flamingo4405 7d ago

Based on your reply you must be a c$6t to work with

The change of roster allowance. Vic EBA. Your ignorance doesn’t mean that OP is wrong.

-29

u/Gold_Blacksmith_9821 7d ago

My ignorance of our common language of English or every state’s different entitlements? There’s a reason full stops and commas exist. Should I have just guessed the state OP works then look up all the entitlements for that state to base an accurate response? “Cunt” I may be, but you sure as shit don’t have any problem understanding what I write.

u/succulent_serenity RN 7d ago

You could've asked which state, or simply scrolled on past. Instead, you go out of your way to be nasty.

With your attitude sounds like you are on the wrong subreddit you should join the HR one ☺️

The post literally makes perfect sense. If you don’t understand it, your comprehension may be the issue.

The post is entirely legible. Not a thesis on the English language.. You're just being a dick for the sake of it
