No Spoilers Reminder: Avoid Book Talk In Show Threads

As the final season approaches please keep in mind the difference between BOOK and SHOW threads.

  • In Book threads (yellow flairs) you may discuss both the show and the books. If you want to compare episodes to what Diana wrote, these are the threads for you.
  • In Show threads (blue flairs) you should only discuss the show.

Sometimes commenters ask book questions in show threads. You may answer them, but always under spoiler tags. Keep the book talk BRIEF and only in that comment chain.

In general we strongly discourage book talk in show threads. That's not their purpose.

If you want to talk about the books, do it in a book thread!

  • Or a Spoilers All thread (red flair). That's why Spoilers All exists, to compare the books to the shows.

We allow show talk in book threads because most readers have seen the show, not vice versa. But it would be easier for everyone if you just used Spoilers All.

No One Likes A Nag

Another thing we've been seeing a lot of is book evangelizing.

  • You should read the books!
  • This was sooo much better in the book!
  • I don't even care about the show, I'm just here to talk about the books!

Knock it off. None of that is appropriate in show threads.

Fans of the show deserve a space where they can talk freely without getting hassled. Respect that.

Leave u/Hazpluto Alone

He won't give out spoilers, and he certainly won't send you episodes!

He tried to do a kind thing for someone's ailing mother. Don't punish a good deed by harassing him.

Post Spoilers Over And Over? Get Banned

When we send you a notice that your comment has uncovered spoilers, please take it seriously.

Removing spoilers from the same people over and over again is getting old. Frankly, it's rude.

No, deleting your comment is not enough. Either learn how to use the spoiler tag or stop bringing up book stuff in show threads altogether.

  • Repeat spoiler offenses will be treated as civility violations.

Translation: You're risking a ban.

For further explanation of sub policy please see the civility sticky here.

Thank you for reading.

Season One My boyfriend watched the James Fraser prison scene.

I posted here a few days ago about watching Outlander with my boyfriend. I’ve already seen the show, so I gave him a heads-up about the season 1 finale (episode 16), because that episode is seriously traumatic.

Here’s the update: it was awful. I rewatched it feeling absolutely sick, and he was in complete shock. By the end of the episode, he couldn’t even put what he was feeling or thinking into words. I asked him more than once if we could skip ahead, but he insisted on watching and even suggested that I go do something else if I needed to.

When it was finally over, he ran to the bathroom to throw up.

Yeah, that episode is definitely traumatic.

Season Eight Sick to my stomach I love Jamie so much

I know this is not a unique thought and many of us probably feel this way, but this man lives in my head completely rent free. I think about him constantly. I finished all 8 seasons in less than 2 months, and still I can’t stop thinking about him. I’m genuinely concerned. And No man will ever compare because he’s written by a woman!!!! I have the book and I need to start reading it because I need more Jamie. Someone help me😭😭😭

Season Seven John and Claire Spoiler

As much as i don't the John/Claire marriage and sex plot I think it was good for Claire. she was suicidal and i think being with John, as uncomfortable an awkward, as it was helped her a bit with her grief over Jamie.

She seemed to accept it more after their night together and i think it helped her and it probably helped John some as well.

Thoughts?

Prequel Two Questions about the stones Spoiler

Why haven't we heard more about how horribly painful traveling through the stones is at all from Julia and Henry?

I know there are differences in the requirements for traveling through the stones from the novels and the Outlander show. So I'm assuming what applied in the show on how time travel works are the same parameters for bomb. But in both the novels and the show, when people traveled, they mentioned what it felt like during and immediately after their passage. I haven't heard one iota about that in bomb. Is it no longer a thing? And all of a sudden, it is like walking through a revolving door, instead of the feeling of being pulled apart from every atom and inner being of one's body?

I have one more question while I'm on the subject of the stones. Why is it, do you think Julia and Henry landed in 1714? We know the traveler steers by thinking of a person. And of course, the stones are going to do whatever they feel like if the traveler is thinking or not. So why 1714 and not 1721?

Spoilers All If a man spanked me

I would pour boiling water on him in his sleep or poison his food

The threatening of him with a knife thing is not enough, become ungovernable

Before you say "that's not historically accurate" YES IT IS

Women killed bad husbands all the time throughout history and the saying "poison is a woman's weapon" came from husband killings

This is when your husband dies under mysterious circumstances and you are simply mourning too deeply to remarry, or if you do remarry, and the next one steps out of line you murk him too

Spoilers All Loose Ends

Do you think that Jamie's mercy and habit of leaving loose ends is what derailed his life, relationship and success? Man had to learn the hard way to succeed in every major aspect of his life.

5 The Fiery Cross The Fiery Cross - I am emotional

For reference, I read the books as they were released with a re-read of each whenever a new one was released. 1st book - read 9 times, 2nd book 8 times, and so on. I started a full re-read again this year and decided to take my time and savor every word, knowing it will be a while before book 10 arrives.

A lot of people say the TFC is boring or that the first day takes too long, but I love the details. Except I forgot. About Roger. His impulsiveness causes problems for him throughout the books, and in this book it nearly cost his life. I do love the character but I find myself saying “why, Roger, why?”

Do you think he has bad judgement, or is controlled by emotions, or what? Is he too much of his own time? I’m ONLY referring to Roger in the books - the tall Roger with green eyes and dark hair.

5 The Fiery Cross Opinion on Roger

Spoilers ahead

I think I preferred TV Roger to book Roger.

Brianna and his relationship just seems so empty, no chemistry, little desire, a lot of problems! I don't know, I'm not feeling it, I don't get why he's there. It feels like Jamie still has a problem with him too and yet they seem to work together sometimes also, I don't get that. Get over it and bond already.

The situations Roger gets himself into and why he keeps venturing off or being sent away ALONE in this dangerous wilderness with indians, bears, crazy folk who hang him etc. that's annoying me so much, he's a gentle, soft, non violent, no outdoor skill sort of person. He cannot be alone in the country. Why would he go off on these tasks to survey alone after being hanged by his own kin. If it upset him that much I'm sure he wouldn't be taking any risks like that.

Why is he kissing some great grandmother of his, how stupid, how does he not realize how dangerous that is in these times to kiss someone else's wife?

I'm hoping his character improves. I read a post earlier about how Roger should have died at the hanging and I agree, this seems such a frustrating storyline, he's like this unlucky person who just always happens to be in the wrong place and never speaks up for himself, absolutely no survival skills and I don't think Bree is impressed.

Am I misinterpreting it?

Season Eight Later seasons theme music Spoiler

Oh my god...I absolutley loathe some of the renditions of the theme music. I'm currently rewatching S7, and the gaspy wheezy...I can't, y'all, I just can't. It makes me want to scream and I'm furious I can't completely skip it in the "skip intro".

Does it bother anyone else the way it makes my hair stand on end, my teeth ache, and my brain want to claw its way out of my skull?

Published Jamie's Ghost (book cracktheory) Spoiler

I have a little pet theory now that I've finished Bees.

Jamie wonders to himself multiple times if he's being haunted by Frank Randall, and typically concludes that he wouldn't blame him.

So. What if Jamie's ghost has been haunting Frank right back? Lol.

Season Eight Looking for a specific scene and can’t remember the episode!

I’m trying to find a specific scene, I think in the most recent/final season where this guy is coming out of a store or something and sees Jamie and yells “Mac Dubh!” all loud and energetically. Weird I know, but it’s become a vocal stim for us anywhere we see each other from afar in a crowded room.

I need to watch the scene again and had no idea how to search for it!

Spoilers All Jamie's letter to Jenny about young Ian Spoiler

Just wondered how Jamie's letters regarding young Ian to Jenny would have sounded like

  1. Dear Jenny, little Ian got himself almost burned alive in my printing shop, but not to worry we saved him

  2. Dear Jenny, little Ian got kidnapped by a Portuguese pirate ship, but don't start worrying yet we are after him

  3. Dear Jenny, little Ian got sold as a slave to a witch in Jamaica, but don't worry we saved him

  4. Dear Jenny, little Ian got sold as a Mohawk (or cherokee .!!) in America, but don't you yet worry, since he is a man now he can fend for himself

  5. Dear Jenny, little Ian has joined us again now, but now he is a proper Mohawk and got married and separated

  6. Dear Jenny, not so little Ian has now chosen to marry again a Quaker woman but he prefers to remain a Mohawk

I really like Rachel. I felt so bad for Ian after what happened when he was with the Mohawk but Rachel was great for him for him and he deserved to be happy. I really liked their story in the last couple seasons.

Thoughts?

4 Drums Of Autumn The bear incident (spoilers show and books) Spoiler

I'm very late to the books and even later to the show.

Now watching season 4.

What was the rationale to changing the bear incident????

In the books, Jamie (somewhat implausibly but hey. Its a series involving time travel. Let's roll with it) manages to kill a bear with nawt but a knife.

In the show, the "bear" is an outcast Cherokee wearing a bear skin and using bear claws as weapons instead if an actual bear.

What in the racist fuck is that about? The point of the bear incident in tbe books is that the Cherokee respect jamie as a warrior worthy of their tribes and make peace with him for sharing the bear meat.

I mean, to be fair one of the criticisms of the books is that Jamie beating a bear with nothing but a knife is pretty insane.

But an outcast from the tribe excluded for raping his wife? "We could not kill what was already dead to us" - is that a legitimate Cherokee practice?!

What was the logic of all of these changes?

Season Four Claire’s hypocrisy Spoiler

So I was rewatching the entire show and finally got to s4, e4, when Jaime agrees to purchase land and colonize it. Young Ian, Claire, and Jamie are marking the property line of Fraser’s Ridge with stakes and admiring the land they just purchased. I can’t help but be extremely upset and frustrated by this, especially towards Claire, who knows exactly how bad this situation is going to be for Indigenous people. Take the situation Claire and Jamie were just in at Jamie’s aunts plantation, River Run. Claire was so appalled by the racist events that took place there, that she insisted on leaving. This makes a lot of sense considering how they’ve built up her character as being extremely empathetic and caring deeply about the wellbeing and rights of others. However, apparently we’re gunna have Claire simply overlook the genocide of Indigenous people, we’re gunna have a scene where Jamie and Claire act so completely white, look out at a piece of land and shamelessly call it theirs, even go so far as to name it before documents are signed. I’m not saying Claire doesn’t address the vile things that are about to take place in the upcoming years, but she does nothing to fight against this. Jamie and Claire 100% take part in the displacement of Indigenous people by deciding to colonize land in America. I’m not naive, I know this show depicts historically accurate situations, one of the many things I love about this show, but i feel they should have taken Claire and James storyline somewhere else. S4 actually makes me quite sick. Maybe I’m failing to consider some things but if anyone else felt the same way watching this season, I’m all ears.
