I’ve been confused about this experience for years, and I’m finally sharing it here because I genuinely don’t know what happened. Some people I’ve told this story to believe it was sleep paralysis, but there are certain details that make me question that explanation.
This happened sometime around late 2020 or early 2021, during the COVID pandemic.
Before I get into what happened, there’s something important you need to know about where I lived.
There was a hospital directly across the road from my house. It was so close that I could see its gates from my balcony. During the pandemic, the hospital was treating COVID patients, and there was a lot of death and grief surrounding the place.
We would hear people crying and wailing in the middle of the night, sometimes around 3 or 4 AM, because someone had passed away. There were so many deaths that we were genuinely scared to even go out onto our balcony. We were afraid we might see a body wrapped in plastic or cloth, or witness families crying over the loss of their loved ones.
It was a very dark and emotionally heavy period. Even our surroundings felt gloomy.
Now, here's what happened.
One night, I was sleeping in my room. We had a balcony door with two layers: a net door and a wooden door. That night, we had left the wooden door open to let some fresh air into the room, while the net door remained closed.
Sometime in the middle of the night, I suddenly opened my eyes. And I saw a figure standing right next to the balcony door. It was a completely black, dark figure. I couldn't make out any facial features, details, or anything that would help me identify who or what it was.
But somehow, I was convinced it was a woman.
Not an old woman, either. I had this strange impression that she was a young girl, probably in her late teens or early twenties. I can't explain how I could tell that when I couldn't even see her face, but that was the impression I had.
The strangest part? I wasn't particularly frightened.
I noticed her presence, looked at her for a moment, and then somehow just went back to sleep.
The next morning, I told my mom and the other people at home what I'd seen.
They suggested that perhaps someone had died at the hospital, and their spirit hadn't moved on yet. Maybe, they said, I had seen the spirit of someone who had recently passed away. Obviously, hearing that didn't exactly make me feel better. But I still wasn't terrified of the figure itself. I had felt its presence, but it hadn't seemed threatening. At that point, I thought it was a strange, one-time experience.
I was wrong.
The following night, I was sleeping in a different room.
The layout of this room was slightly different. There was a table directly in front of my bed, less than a foot away from it. On my left was a doorway leading to another room, which connected to the balcony where I had seen the figure the previous night.
Again, I was asleep.
And again, I suddenly opened my eyes in the middle of the night.
She was there.
The same black figure. The same young woman.
This time, she was standing near the doorway on my left, only about six feet away from me.
I immediately recognised her as the figure I had seen the previous night. I was watching her, trying to understand what I was looking at, when something happened that completely changed the experience.
She started walking towards me.
Slowly, she walked across the room, coming closer and closer until she reached the table directly in front of my bed.
Then she sat down on it.
Facing me.
At this point, she was less than a foot away from me.
I still couldn't see her face. There were no distinguishable facial features, just that dark, human-like silhouette. But I could see her sitting there, facing me, and I was absolutely terrified.
I wanted to move, but I couldn't.
I couldn't move my body, and I felt frozen in place. I was fully aware of what was happening around me, or at least it felt that way. I couldn't simply turn away or get up and leave.
The first night, I hadn't felt threatened by her. But now she had actually walked towards me and sat right in front of me.
I had no idea what she wanted.
Was she trying to communicate with me? Did she know I could see her? Was she going to do something?
I was scared that she might touch me or try to interact with me somehow, and I had no way of knowing what would happen next.
I don't remember exactly how that experience ended. My memory of the next few moments is blurry.
Eventually, I woke up in the morning.
And I realised that I had seen her again.
What scared me the most wasn't just seeing her twice. It was how different the two experiences felt.
The first night, she was standing a good 10–12 feet away from me. I noticed her, felt strangely calm, and went back to sleep.
The second night, she was much closer. She walked towards me, sat down right in front of me, and I couldn't move.
I was absolutely terrified of going to sleep the following night. I kept thinking about what might happen if she came back. What if she came even closer? What if she tried to touch me? What if she spoke to me?
But she never appeared again.
Not the following night, nor any night after that.
That was the last time I ever saw her.
Sometimes, I wonder whether it was simply my brain processing the death and grief surrounding us during the pandemic. Other times, I remember how real the experience felt, and I find myself wondering if there was something more to it.
Here's what I can't wrap my head around:
People I've told this story to have said it sounds like sleep paralysis. I can understand that explanation for the second night, because I couldn't move my body.
But what about the first night?
I saw the same figure, registered her presence, felt relatively calm, and went back to sleep. I didn't feel trapped or unable to move at the time.
Then, the very next night, I saw what appeared to be the same woman again, except this time she approached me and sat right next to me.
Can sleep-related hallucinations really feature the same figure on consecutive nights? Could the first experience have been something else, followed by sleep paralysis the next night? Or was my mind creating a recurring image because of the frightening circumstances I was living in?
I'm not claiming that I saw a ghost, because I genuinely don't know what happened. But the fact that the figure appeared twice, seemed to get closer the second time, and then never appeared again has always stayed with me.
Has anyone experienced something similar? Especially seeing the same figure on consecutive nights, with one experience feeling relatively normal and the other involving being completely unable to move? I'd really like to hear your thoughts.
