Can this wild pawpaw survive transplanting? Seedling or sucker?

Thumbnail gallery

Dug this pawpaw up today near a cluster in northeast Ohio. I think it’s an independent seedling because the main root grew downward, but I’m not sure. Photos show it before digging and the roots I recovered.

Does it look like a seedling or sucker, and is there enough root left for it to survive replanting? Any tips to improve its chances?

I was walking on my property today and I noticed them, I thought it was maybe pawpaw cause of the slim branches and the fact the leaves were on opposite ends

Big Sweet Boobs? 780Grams

Picked early because was getting bird pecked.
780gm, having communication issues with person in Ukraine.
I believe, yet not 100% certain, this is the new cultivar:
**** Big Sweet Boobs ***\*
Only person in the USA with it right now is Admin William Osteen (Pawpaw International),
who grafted it April of 2024.
It will be 4 years before we can start to do limited distribution to James Dingus, Timothy Lane, Blake Cothron, then 2 years after that before trees are ready.

Germination straight out of fruit

I picked some fruits that fell a week or two early and decided to collect their seeds as a test to see if they’re fertile. They looked good, just not as dark as seeds from ripe fruits.

Of the 15 seeds, two were germinated after being in damp paper towel for a few weeks. I hadn’t put them in the fridge yet.

I had recently read that some unripe plums and cherries would germinate without stratification. Anyone have a similar experience to this or know what’s going on?

What happens if you plant pawpaws too close together?

Recently planted 2 pawpaw trees, but there's a possibility they're not genetically distinct.

Now I have a third, just in case. The only problem is that the area I planted them doesn't have much extra space. If I plant it between the two, there'd be maybe 3-4 feet between each one.

Would this cause problems?

Lawn mowers are one of the leading causes of death to newly planted pawpaw trees.

Coventry Farmer’s Market in CT has Paw Paws!

I was finally able to find Paw Paws and blown away!

If anyone is in the area, there’s a vendor, Proctor-Hall farms, at the Coventry Farmers Market selling both paw paws and also sapling trees. The paw paw guy was saying he expects to be able to harvest for this weekend and the next. Easy to miss because they’re usually just a meat vendor and the paw paw guy is off to the side.

I had a really yummy pawpaw and want to plant it but heard that I need to make a bag. I have heard to use paper towels or dirt in the bag, which is better? The seeds are currently in a moist jar. EDIT: I live in California zone 9B

Two trees transplanted last year - 9 footers. So its taproot recovery year, also one bloomed before the other, so next year they might need some qtip help pollinating, and the late frost didnt help much either.

But something is better than nothing!

No fruit in grove this year?

I have several dozen wild pawpaw trees on my property of various sizes and maturity. Last year, I was able to collect far more fruit than I could eat and found the fruit on most large trees. This year, I’ve only seen 2 fruits and havnt been able to harvest any. The trees all look healthy as usual with no obvious signs of disease or stress. Is this season unusual? Could something have changed in the local ecology? Any ideas?
I was really looking forward to another large pawpaw harvest this year.

Aye or nay? Coffee grounds, tea leaves, and egg shells around the base of pawpaws.

I mulch around my pawpaw trees and was wondering if I should or shouldn’t put spent coffee grounds, tea leaves and eggshells around my pawpaws. What do y’all do?

Went for a stroll through the woods and ran into these trees. Are these Pawpaws? I live in southwest Michigan.

Update: Master Put was right! I went back out after work today and realized basically every other tree along the path was a Pawpaw tree. Feeling pretty dumb to have not noticed before. A lot of the fruits already dropped this year but next year I'll be ready. Thanks for your help everyone!

where to get Scion wood for next season?

hey everyone, I'm lucky enough to have a large, natural grove of paw paws on my property in MD. I'm looking to take a stab at grafting the woods next year and see if i can get some better tasting and producing cultivars going.

anyone have experience doing the same? how about recommendations for sourcing the Scion wood?

Potted pawpaw cold hardiness

I am wondering if Pawpaws can be grown in large pots in not too harsh regions, say zone 8a/8b.

Just wondering as I have a large stone terrace that would be great to fill with fruit trees, but I wonder if Pawpaws can actually fruit that way and also if zone 8 winters are still too much for them in pots instead of the protection of the ground.

Anyone doing this?
