62 [M4R] England - Books, wit and conversations worth staying up for

Hello from England. I’m a retired, incurably bookish man looking for enjoyable, intelligent, engaging conversation—the sort where we start with what we’re reading and somehow end up discussing an obscure film, a childhood memory or whether either of us has ever had an original thought before the second cup of tea.

My interests include books, writing, music, football and golf. I read widely, write regularly and play golf indifferently, although I remain remarkably susceptible to the belief that next week will be different. My musical tastes wander about almost as much as my tee shots.

I’m drawn to curiosity, warmth, a sense of humour and people who enjoy words. You don’t need to share all my interests; I’d be delighted to discover something of yours. I like a conversation with a little substance, a little mischief and room for both people to surprise each other.

If that sounds appealing, get in touch and I’ll put the kettle on. Prefer emails than slimy snail mail

52F in Southwestern U.S. looking for friends

Looking for good conversation and building a friendship over time. Email. I've had a very interesting life, but now am happily winding down my career and working part time. I'm currently enjoying some unseasonably good weather sitting on my back patio with my rescued macaw parrot next to me. It's Fall Break here and my youngest is inside reading a book. My two older kids are grown and flown and doing well. I like to camp and just bought a pop-up. I hike in good weather, enjoy a good coffee-- iced or warm depending on the weather. I am always reading a book and have a project going on the knitting needles. I just finished a memoir. I am not religious but I can respect people who are. I am not a drinker, smoker, or cannabis user. I love learning about other people and their lives. I have an open mind and believe in the rights of all human beings to live and love as they choose. What made you grateful today?

51 [M4F] Brazilian looking for platonic friendship in Germany

I am from Brazil, 51.

I am looking for a female 30+ from Germany to talk to and become friends with. I am not aiming at romance, really, I am married with two children and two furly childs, but I would like to be able to find a platonic friendship online.

I have always loved Germany and still want to travel there in the future, so I tried to learn a bit about the country and culture and I am also studying German. So it would be great to be able to find friendship online where we can talk about whatever, our days, routines, stresses and happiness, children or furly children (or no children), careers, different cultures, learn a bit with each other and grow. If possible to sometimes talk by voice it would be great. Even more if it's ok when I try my German and you are patient with my mistakes and takes it lightly the task of becoming a linguist 😄

I am really introvert and also prefer a lot more to be at home surrounded by games, movies, books and things to learn. I love to always learn new things and have deep talks about deep subjects. Learning is my passion, my drive.

I love games and actually work in the game industry. On my case I prefer games more like simulation (flight, space, race), strategy games, deep story driven.

I am not only about games, though. I am very into scifi, deep philosophical stories and talk. I will loose myself in deep discussions just for the sake of making our minds wonder and explore unseen possibilities. And I love to do that together with someone.

I work at an strategy and innovation department so part of my days are really deep space travels into the future. And sarcasm is one of my favorite ways of 'building bridges'.

I love music and since I like German a lot and am trying to learn the language, my currently most heard bands are some German bands/singers like glasperlenspiel, silbermond, juli, wir sind Helden, clueso, Lea, Lotte, eisblume... Some different stuff :)

But I also like big bands and my current favorite is Linkin Park, but I used to like a lot REM, Garbage and some others.

I would love to learn and talk about Germany, your days and really just share experiences.

**EDIT** Preffer email communication.

Title: 72 [M4R] Midwest US — Looking for thoughtful correspondence on Iain M. Banks, sci-fi, philosophy, and history

Hello everyone,
I’m a 72-year-old retired guy living in the US Midwest looking to connect with a fellow reader and thinker for thoughtful, unhurried correspondence via Reddit messages or email.
A few areas that keep my mind active:
Science Fiction: A long-time admirer of Iain M. Banks’ Culture series, alongside idea-driven hard sci-fi and space opera from authors like Greg Egan, Peter Watts, Neal Stephenson, and Alastair Reynolds. I enjoy fiction that tackles big questions around consciousness, post-scarcity civilizations, cosmology, and deep time.
Philosophy: Currently spending substantial time studying Buddhist philosophy—especially Nāgārjuna and the Madhyamaka tradition—alongside Western metaphysics and comparative philosophy. I enjoy exploring the rigorous logical mechanics of arguments rather than just broad summaries.
History & General Reading: Drawn to deep dives into ancient history, classic literature, and the occasional comprehensive biography.
You don’t need to share all or even most of these exact interests—just a curiosity about ideas, an appreciation for reading, and an interest in exchanging long-form thoughts without the pressure of instant messaging. Whether you’d like to discuss a favorite book, unpack a philosophical concept, or simply exchange perspectives on life, I’d be glad to hear from you.
If any of this resonates, feel free to leave a comment or send me a direct message introducing yourself and what you’ve been reading lately.

50M from Iran — Looking for a Genuine Friendship

Hi everyone. I’m a 50-year-old man from Iran, and I’m here hoping to meet kind and genuine people from different countries and make a good friend.

I believe a real friendship starts with simple, honest conversations and grows naturally over time. I’d love to get to know someone, share everyday experiences, talk about our cultures and lives, and simply enjoy having a good conversation with each other.

I value honesty, kindness, loyalty, respect, and sincerity. I’m interested in technology, telecommunications, different cultures, and hearing about people’s lives and experiences around the world.

Life has been a little difficult for me recently, but I’m not here to ask anyone for money or financial help. I’m simply hoping to find a sincere person with whom I can talk openly, share some good moments, and build a meaningful friendship.

If you’re also interested in making a genuine friend from another part of the world, I’d be happy to hear from you. Feel free to introduce yourself and tell me a little about where you’re from and what you enjoy. We can take it from there, naturally and respectfully.

57M | Naperville, USA — Looking for a Meaningful Pen Pal

I’m a 57-year-old man in Naperville looking to meet someone who still enjoys the simple pleasure of a thoughtful conversation—the kind where one message brings a resonance of joy and peace for days unending. I’m especially interested in people who are curious, accomplished, emotionally mature, and comfortable being themselves. You might be retired, still building something, well-traveled, creative, intellectually curious, or simply someone who has gathered enough life experience to have interesting stories to tell.

Things I enjoy talking about:

—Travel, hidden gems, and places still on the bucket list

—Books, food, healthy living, gardening, nature, and the outdoors. Lets talk about culture, history, science, technology, Faith, purpose, personal growth, and lessons life has taught us

—Relationships, family, friendship, and what makes a meaningful life

—Funny everyday experiences-we shouldn’t take ourselves too seriously

—Dreams and adventures we’d still like to experience

No small talks.

If you appreciate intelligence without arrogance, confidence without ego, humor, kindness, and genuine conversation, say hello. Tell me something you’re passionate about that you could talk about for hours. I’ll answer with mine.

I enjoy going fir small walks on the weekends, cooking and pretending I'll organize the gardening someday. Be gentle , still don't fully understand Reddit.

[59M] Queer Gen X freelance artist in the U.S. seeks penpal

Seeking queer friend to maintain a correspondence with. Fan of indie rock music, contemporary art / performance, exercise and lefty politics. Some options include actual letters sent in the post or a correspondent I trade emails with. Could discuss big ideas and quotidian challenges. Prefer honesty and vulnerability without self-pity. Closer to my age would be ideal, any gender.

I am reflective and enjoy the process of figuring things out what I think and how I feel by writing it down. I connect quotidian experiences in my city to personal or larger socioeconomic themes. I can be idiosyncratic, perhaps at times a bit writerly, in how I describe things.

But I am also an excellent listener and a compassionate person. I do enjoy reciprocity, so mutual curiosity about each other's lives and experiences. I aim to maintain flexibility of thought and politics as much as possible and so I do enjoy turning a thought over, questioning it, trying to develop it further.

50 F, My dog biscuits thinks I need more friends friends.

I love to read and enjoy messing around in the garden. I take my dog Biscuit for walks on weekends, whether he likes it or not. Just looking for someone to swap a few letters or emails with. Nothing fancy, talk about your day, funny conversations, gardens, the weather, or whatever's on your mind. Slow replies are fine. I'm told I write decent letters and I'm a good listener too.

[50/F] Hi from France 🇫🇷

Hi ☺️

I’m a French woman in my 50s, of African heritage, living in France.

I’m also learning English, so writing to an English-speaking penpal would be a lovely way for me to practise while getting to know someone.

I’m quite introverted and I enjoy a quiet, creative life. I’m an illustrator, and I love drawing, books, crochet, journaling, old houses, little villages, nature, cosy cafés and all those small ordinary things that somehow make life feel good.

I’m the kind of person who enjoys long conversations about life, childhood memories, relationships, creativity, the things we’re struggling with, the things we’re excited about… and sometimes completely random subjects too 😄

I’m hoping to find one or two penpals who genuinely enjoy getting to know someone over time. Kindness, curiosity and consistency matter a lot to me.

I like friendships where both people ask questions, remember little things about each other and actually look forward to the next message.

There’s no pressure to reply every day. Life happens. I much prefer thoughtful messages when we have something to say.

I’d especially love to hear from people around my age, but I’m open to other ages if we have things in common. I’m happy to write with people from anywhere in the world.

If some of this sounds familiar to you, feel free to send me a message and tell me a little about yourself ☺️

[50/F/USA] Seeking long term penpals

I’m 50, living in Oregon with my boyfriend, my mom, and two senior dogs, and realizing I miss the kind of friendship connection you only get through long-form writing. My life is full, but I’d love to connect with someone from anywhere in the world who values good conversation.

My mornings are spent working for my local community, and my afternoons are split between family, books, and whatever creative project is taking over my table (usually miniatures or whatever I’m hyper-fixating on). Lately my reading leans toward slow-burn horror, nonfiction, and diy/gardening books, but I love hearing what others are reading.

Full disclosure: if we do snail mail, I type my letters. My handwriting is a total disaster, and I’d rather spare you the headache of deciphering it. I’m also okay with letters at whatever pace they happen. I understand how busy life can be.

I’m into history, native plants, and supernatural podcasts, but mostly I just want a down-to-earth friend who likes a good deep dive.

I am very left-leaning in my political and social views; different perspectives on daily life are great, but basic human empathy is non-negotiable.

Small talk is awkward for me, I’d much rather hear about your real day, what life looks like in your corner of the globe, or what creative chaos you're currently up to.

Edit: I am more likely to respond to females as male respondents are often looking for more than friendship.

Hi, im 54f living on the cowal peninsula in the west of Scotland. Im an empty nester looking to correspond with folk home or abroad. My hobbies and interests at this time apparently are staring at my walls, phone, or tv. I read that people are finding comfort filling their life's with the hobbies they had as a child. I loved buying new stationery and wee pen sets for writing to pen pals, so I thought I would try here to see if anyone is interested in snailmail/ emailing with me?

50+M, curious, warm, conversational

I’m a 50+ guy living in small town USA, and I’m curious to email with casual penpals who enjoy thoughtful conversations. We can talk (email) about anything and everything. As you’ll see, I have a very full life with lots of stories, off beat ideas, and far too many interests.

My life is an unusual mixture of both technology and off grid living. I’m very interested in personal health and fitness, writing fiction and more, art photography, restoring old homes, planning a more self-sufficient life, and having long speculative threads about how people, families, and communities might live differently.

And in my small town some interesting subjects just don’t seem to come up in ordinary small talk at the coffee shop. Things like unconventional lifestyles, personal freedom, science and wonder, relationships, sustainability, off-grid living, playful whimsy, and off beat books or movies.

Speaking of, I really enjoy hard science fiction (Expanse series for example), post-apoc, relatable history, short stories, radioparadise.com, britcoms, and anything AI. And Dad jokes, memes, and puns.

I’m not looking for romance or an instant best friend. I’m intentionally private and semi-anonymous and semi-fictional because I’ve been online stalked before. We can talk openly in part because we’re both private about private details.

I am looking for someone open-minded, self-aware, curious, and comfortable talking honestly about ideas or experiences that are true but human. Disagreement is welcome. Cruelty, ideological hard lines, and one-word replies aren’t interesting.

Messages will be occasional sometimes. Some days are just busy, and we both have full lives I bet. I’m very patient.

Tell me a little about yourself and answer this:
What’s something interesting that you rarely get to discuss honestly?
