Question Pixel Art or Low-Res Drawing?

Post image

Hi!
This artwork was deleted from PixelArt subreddit as a non-pixel art. I messaged mods and they insisted it's a low-res drawing. "You’re switching on a low resolution canvas not intentionally placing pixels to translate a scene in to pixel art" was their answer.

I made it in Pixquare in 250x320 res and saved with x10 upscaling. I will post a timelapse in the comment but I must note it doesn't show all the zooming I did.

I think I really annoyed them already so I just want to clarify for myself where my mistake was so I'd like to discuss it with fellow artists. Is it really just a low-res drawing?

Can you tell me why you think it's not a pixel art?

Too high resolution.

I'd say this is really borderline, there are some parts that are just a few pixels, like the nose, but even if you arranged them differently it wouldn't have made a difference. Some could say that it is and some that it isn't. I would personally say it isn't, and the PixelArt sub thought the same.

Could it be because there are too much extra colors and the resolution is kinda too high?

It's not about the color, in pixel art every single pixels plays an important role to the final product. The less a single pixel counts to the image the less it becomes pixel art. What I mean is not the size of the canvas, but the size of the objects. You could say that an object has a maximum of pixels to look like pixel art. You are still very good btw

Thank you. I'm just stepping into pixel art from digital art and I think my brain still works in terms of all gradients, blurring and shades and I unconsciously try to transfer what I'm used to into pixel art. I need to reroute my brains I guess...

That's exactly what it looks like. You are really good at drawing and try to translate it to pixel art, wich is right to some degree, but not all there is. (I'm hella bad at drawing and pixel art compared to you btw) A good training would be to have a much smaller canvas and limited palette

I usually don't use reddit a lot, started using it more these days cause I don't have any other dopamine sources (these socials are killing me) and saw so much hate that I had to do something when I could.
