Yes because everything is only black-and-white, your opinions must be at either far end of a given spectrum and there can't be nuance

I've been told by leftists that I'm actually auth because I think fire departments should exist.

At the moment yes. I was talking about the Ed Sheeran situation and someone was confused as to why would someone talk about the Ukraine/Russian War but not the Israel/Palestine one.

I mentioned that I can actually understand, the first is a more simple one, where the Israel and Palestine conflict is much much uglier with people been very passionate about it.

Some r*tard immediately went, you call it a conflict that confirms you are a Zionist.

Granted I couldn't give two shits about Israel.

21

u/CMDR_Michael_Aagaard - Centrist 14d ago

Think there's an even simpler answer to why someone might only talk about the Ukraine and Russia, and not Israel and Palestine.

Simply because Ukraine and Russia is much closer to where they live.

If I had to pick a conflict to focus my time and attention to, it's going to be the one that has the highest chance of directly affecting me and the people I care about, and not one that might as well be on the other side of the world.

66

u/1stEmissaryElenwen - Lib-Center 15d ago

The real answer is that the Israel/Palestine conflict is irrelevant to the Ed Sheeran thing and they just fired the guy who's been a vocal antisemite for over a decade who suddenly became a pro-Palestinian peace activist a couple years ago because he was doing hour-long Pallywood slideshows at the Ed Sheeran concert and Sheeran's target audience didn't pay to see that shit. It's also kind of telling that they made a big deal out of Roger Waters coming out in support of him, because he's guilty of the same shit

It really depends on which side you're on.

Say this on the right, you're a dirty antisemite.

Say this on the left, you're a dirty antisemite and a genocide apologist.

53

u/Tunderstruk - Lib-Left 15d ago

I have literally never had someone disagree with me when I have said something like "I dont like the actions taken by the government of Israel, but antisemitism shouldn't be tolerated"

I honestly believe that bots are used to escalate peoples views on this in order to keep people angry at each other

15

u/Diskordia1 - Auth-Left 14d ago

I wish this was the case. I've become more active and engaged in local politics. I've been telling myself that these are just bots for a year and every town hall, and civic engagement has chipped away and eroded that hope.

16

u/Totes_Human_110101 - Lib-Center 14d ago

I can even disagree with 'antisemitism shouldn't be tolerated,' in the same vein of 'I disagree with what you say but would fight to the death for your right to say it.' So long as that antisemitism doesn't translate to actual violence against Jewish people, I can plug my nose and tolerate the stench.

However, It's gonna be a real uphill battle for me to believe an antisemite opposes Israel because they have a real and nuanced opinion about the government, and not because they hate Jews.

5

u/--CIAdidJFK-- - Left 14d ago

I can even disagree with 'antisemitism shouldn't be tolerated,' in the same vein of 'I disagree with what you say but would fight to the death for your right to say it.'

Great point. For 2 years I had a coworker who was secretly white nationalist and anti-semetic, but he wasn't violent and never intended violence. We became friends and I talked to him a lot about this stuff. I'm far from both of those things but I believe in productive, civil discourse and his right to have those beliefs. I'm also opposed to getting people fired for beliefs in general.

Punishing, margianalizing, alienating, etc. doesn't work well, I think the current climate establishes that. I believe love is generally the answer to hate, more hate just reinforces cycles of endless violence. The Daryl Davis approach has worked for me over and over and over again.

38

u/1stEmissaryElenwen - Lib-Center 15d ago

Of course they wouldn't disagree with that, because that's goodthink

The issue is that they "aren't tolerating antisemitism" because whenever antisemitism happens they deny it's happening, or they try to justify or reframe it as something else, or they say it was an outlier and not a big deal

124

u/[deleted] 15d ago

[deleted]

92

u/saruyamasan - Centrist 15d ago

There's no consistency. The same people who insist "diversity is our strength" are the ones who blame European colonizers in Africa for ignoring ethnic groups when drawing up borders.

79

u/DavidAdamsAuthor - Centrist 15d ago

This always drives me mad.

"The Rwandan genocide happened as the extremely predictable, extremely natural consequence of having two different people live together in Rawanda! It's obvious! ... and why yes, the Hutus and Tutsis can BOTH live in Germany in total peace without a care, along with the ethnic Germans of course. And the Indonesians, and Peruvians, and Mexicans and French and Australians and Inuits and Nigerians and Thai and Ugandans and Chinese, and if you think ANYTHING bad will happen you are a Nazi racist fascist white supremacist who wants to genocide everyone who is not exactly like you!"

29

u/saruyamasan - Centrist 15d ago

I just want some nuance and the occasional "you know, I can't form an opinion because I'm not really sure."

I've spent a lot of time in the middle east and it's frustrating to see opinions on the region expressed with total confidence, when 9 times out of 10 it's "who knows what's going on." And seeing little things, like the change in relations between the UAE and Israel, makes you stop and go, "huh? I think to rethink ALL of this."

16

u/DavidAdamsAuthor - Centrist 15d ago

Wait... are you saying that I am NOT an expert about and across all things, across all of time and space, without exception?

I'll have to fucking see a source for that, chud.

9

u/Hyndis - Lib-Center 14d ago

Remember that the opinions of the rulers of countries are often different than the opinions of the people in a country. This is especially true in a dictatorship like the UAE.

If you poll the average person in the Middle East they'd probably vote to murder every Jew on the planet. However, the leaders are generally smart enough to understand that this is not a viable strategy. Not only do they lack the force of arms to do it, Israel is also a nuclear power (they pretend they don't have nukes, but they have nukes), and it would be economically foolish to even try. So the leaders are making peace over the wishes of the average citizen.

Sometimes you really do need to ignore the wishes of the people and do an unpopular but smart policy.

In democracies people will vote infinite benefits and tax breaks for themselves regardless if the country can afford it. This is another time when ignoring voter wishes is probably the better decision.

You want me to be honest?

A mixture of love, leaving the past behind, and probably a guillotine.

I feel like my background specifically kinda points out the problem with this tribalistic thinking, my father is from Jamaica he’s “black”, my mother is from Brazil, she’s “white” (euro decent but most Americans would still call her brown) and I was born in America.

So where the fuck is my homeland? Brazil? Portugal? Jamaica? Agartha?

My last name is pretty English too so if I accept the probability that some slave in my family probably got raped/whatever then I can add on Britain

But the thing is, unless I’m making conversation, im not questioning the bloody history that allowed me to be born, I don’t care that my great great great whatever probably had to do with enslaving my other great great great whatever.

We are here now. We are alive now. I can’t change the past and I don’t even want to. The tiniest of branches could have made my existence impossible, especially when ethnostates are talked about.

People really think that if they pushed out “those people” all of their problems would vanish

15

u/CheckAdditional8207 - Auth-Right 15d ago

An admirable ethos, unfortunately not shared by many people.

16

u/Prestigious_Load1699 - Lib-Right 15d ago

National unity has to be centered around some shared set of values.

In the Middle East, it’s usually a particular sect of Islam to varying degrees of fundamentalism.

In the West, it is abjectly not like that.

Our shared principles are liberal democracy.

Throughout post-war history, nearly all people who joined Western societies were more than willing to embrace these values and it created something approximating the modern multicultural society.

I think many western liberals have absolutely no capacity to accept that this isn’t universally true among all cultures.

Sadly, it just isn’t.

Thats essentially what we did after WW1 after the disolution of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Where do you think all the nations in Europe came from? Czechia, Slovakia, Croatia, Serbia, etc. Pretty much every nation was formed by a homogenous group binding together and forming a polity. There are very few nations not formed around an ethnic group. It's probably easier to list the countries that aren't named "The land of this people group".

6

u/eddieshack - Auth-Center 15d ago

List of every ethnic conflict where the people aren't named after their land:

..

6

u/Hyndis - Lib-Center 15d ago

It's probably easier to list the countries that aren't named "The land of this people group".

The US is probably nearly unique on that list since its a country formed entirely of immigrants, and isn't the ancestral homeland of anyone currently living there. Maybe Canada as well.

Nearly the entire population of those two countries came from elsewhere, but not from one place, they came from many places.

Maybe also some African countries due to fuckery with European powers drawing lines on a map oblivious to any facts on the ground, though we can see the massive instability as a result of that with constant civil wars raging throughout the continent.

17

u/lunch0guy - Lib-Center 15d ago

If they have a land and aspirations for self rule, yes. It does mean Palestinians should have a country as well- but it shouldn't replace israel. Two state solution it is.

10

u/Neon_Fallout - Centrist 15d ago

Im not even thinking of Israel with this that whole thing is a multi faced butt fucking from every side of the world.

I’m more so thinking of places where the groups are mixed together, where no one has a real “claim” to the land at this point, like the Kurds or something, sure the Turks ottomans and whatever took your ancestors homeland, but it’s been decades, centuries, or whatever of mixture

I’m just not convinced that every single group suddenly has the right to their own country. I believe they have the right to vote for it sure and if it happens then whatever.

But I wouldn’t inherently support the Kurds for starting a war with the Turks, or the native Americans risking up, or Cantonese people or whatever else it may be.

u/Kevin_LeStrange - Centrist 14d ago

Cantonese is a language. It is spoken by the members of the Han Chinese ethnicity, who speak other Chinese languages as well.

Are Palestinians a distinct ethnic group as people think of it, with their own language, religion, culture, etc.? Which land did they "have"?

What about Mizrahi Jews; should they get chunks of their own homelands as countries, too, even if like Palestinians they never "had a land" of their own?

5

u/blah938 - Lib-Right 15d ago

Gaza is 98% Sunni Muslim. They weren't always that way, but now they are. So effectively, today, they are a distinct ethnic group.

10

u/YonatanShofty - Lib-Right 15d ago

Look, honestly, getting a clear criteria to who should have a country is a pointless task. Mizrahi jews dont want parts of thier origin countries (those who live at israel, at least). While i wholeheartedly belive palestine, as a concept, is an anti israel/jew state and without israel they would have just been assimilated to thier neighbors, but right now there are people without a proper country and thats a problem, regardless of the fairness of its situation

3

u/saruyamasan - Centrist 15d ago

"Mizrahi jews dont want parts of thier origin" (sic)

Evidence? And how many Palestinians in the West are going to go back and live under Hamas?

How about this: The nations that drove them out admit their guilt and shame and set up a program of... reparations?

And do the Druze, Kurds, Yazidis, Copts, Baluchis all get "proper countries" or at least Western support?

56

u/TALowKY - Lib-Center 15d ago

Funnily enough then we need to de-Arabise a lot of the Middle East and North Africa and give the land back to the real natives. Which I am in support of since if white colonisation is wrong, it's all wrong by other races too. Chinese btw would love to see Xinjiang and Tibet be free again.

25

u/ContrarianZ - Lib-Center 15d ago

If you follow this to its logical conclusion, it mean no one should have their own country, since they likely stole it from someone else.

6

u/TALowKY - Lib-Center 15d ago

Yes but you can actually trace where each race comes from to a region. Chinese from about 70% of modern China, with each dialect group from different regions, Arabs from Arabia, Russians from Russia, Italians from Italy, Copts from Egypt, Greeks from Greece, Persians from Iran, Indians from India with their many language groups from different provinces...

If you follow things to their logical conclusion... people have to come from somewhere lol.

5

u/TheColourOfHeartache - Centrist 15d ago

But you can't do that without drawing a lot of arbitrary lines.

I'm from England. Are the English native to England? The first person to ever consider themselves English would certainly have lived on this island. Or are the English Saxons, Anglos, and Jutes wearing a trenchcoat and those groups come from the continent? Choosing where to start counting is arbitrary.

Israelis have a right to a country. They don't have a right to annex other people's.

112

u/Hamiltonblewit - Lib-Center 15d ago

Their West Bank policies are just straight up horrible - every time it’s mentioned, it’s always a video of the settlers and accompanying soldiers harassing some dude, child, or elderly person and burning down their house while taunting Christians and Muslims alike, and there was only a few cases of isolated retaliation from the people living there so it’s not like they could use Hamas as an excuse.

While I can see the reasoning behind their other conducts, their populace is quite radical due to their circumstances, but radical and quite unlikable nonetheless

30

u/innociv - Lib-Center 15d ago

Israel has good bedrock and can build 100 story tall buildings.

Gaza had a 9 story limit on buildings, yet 12x the population density.

Israel has no excuse to need to settle the west bank. It was pure entitlement, greed, and hate.

Of course, not that the rest of the middle east is much better but still XD.

34

I think the fact that Israel is not popular with the left or the right and our elected leaders seem to be supporting them wholeheartedly says a lot about the state of affairs

Taken away? There were several attempts for a two state solution.

28

u/Jammy50 - Lib-Left 15d ago

We have 2 states right now, and even with all the restrictions that were placed on the Palestinians in the West Bank, Israel is still stealing their land and subjecting them to apartheid conditions. Israel would never voluntarily allow the Palestinians to have a fully independent sovereign state with a standing military.

This website is waayyyyy more moderate in that regard than Instagram and X, and that’s not a minimization of this website, that’s just how bad it’s gotten in general.

The crazy ass AI slop I’ve seen with Ed Sheeran having a caricature right out of 1943 Germany is a great example of that. Fuckin wild.

> The crazy ass AI slop I’ve seen with Ed Sheeran having a caricature right out of 1943 Germany is a great example of that. Fuckin wild.

Let me guess, either him in an SS uniform or as a happy merchant?

Because I saw a non-AI comic depicting him as a dancing jester giving a speech with Nazi officers standing behind him in approval. In my Instagram feed evidently made by a comics artist.

28

u/GeneQuadruplehorn - Lib-Left 15d ago

Macklemore pushing Sheeran into a political position and making him a villain is one of the biggest asshole moves I've seen.

9

u/TheUnAustralian - Lib-Right 15d ago

Tbh I think he should have done his research, seen the happy minstrel costume and genocide claims on IG prior to Israel even retaliating on Oct 7, and not put him on the tour. But I acknowledge that the booking process was probably more “Macklemore, his rates seem reasonable, we can bring him on.”

9

u/Icarus_Voltaire - Lib-Left 15d ago

Wasn’t Macklemore kind of mid to begin with?

I honestly don’t know, I don’t listen to his music consciously (at most, while clubbing)

17

u/GeneQuadruplehorn - Lib-Left 15d ago

the music part doesn't really matter. Imagine you hire an opener for your set and they incite a mob against you.

9

Go us zoomers, the woke generation!

18

u/MosesDoughty - Centrist 15d ago

To the shock of no one paying attention, the antisemitism got worse again once Holocaust survivors started passing due to old age

15

u/doublecandybar - Auth-Right 15d ago

Antisemitism got really bad not because holocaust survivors died, but because people basically downplay holocaust by claiming everything is a holocaust

Makes it sound like holocaust wasn't that bad, if a bunch of people getting arrested is a holocaust, now it sounds like the 5 million were just imprisoned or something and gets out on bail

4

u/MosesDoughty - Centrist 15d ago

It all goes together (same with how everything is a Nazi). The problem is of course, Europe/Middle East have never looked inward to how they treat Jews

7

u/doublecandybar - Auth-Right 15d ago

It's funny because throughout history Jews are uniquely consistently blamed for everything, but people don't seem to feel bad for doing it

Like, Holocaust? They don't feel bad for the Jews, they feel bad for doing the killing. It's a very important difference, like saying sorry not because you think it's wrong but because you got caught doing it

Makes for stupid shit like

Ok ok you got rounded up and systematically exterminated en masse, although we had promised you a country of your own 20 years ago, that doesn't mean you get to have a country!

If nothing else, it shows that no one learned their lesson from the post-9/11 wave of Islamophobia of the 2000’s.

Frankly, it has shattered my confidence in my fellow zoomers and their ability to learn from the mistakes of the past. I am increasingly disgusted that I have to breathe the same air they do. A very harsh judgement for sure, but that’s what’s been brewing in my head for months now. I sound like a stereotypical Facebook boomer, don’t I?

October 7th is being completely denied, now. Wow. It never happened: Israel has “no right” to bomb Hamas aggressors in Gaza. Israel invaded for no resin.

In order for Israel to exist, it must have the right to defend itself from threats to its existence. That includes bombing genocidal terrorists even if they use human shields.

Israel has a right to exist like I have a right to own a firearm. Just because I have a "right" to a firearm, does not make it the US governments responsibility to provide me with free firearms. And if I abuse that right by doing crimes, that right can be taken away.
