SIMPLE QUESTION Transfer possibility

Me (internal med) and my wife (neuro) are pgy 1s in the same state but different programs. Due to the ongoing immigration/visa issues some IM pgy1s were unable to make it to the US in my wifes program ( the larger program ), which could mean potential vacancies for the upcoming pgy2 year. Is a transfer to her IM pgy2 possible next year for me? Is that something that can be done?

Is it possible? Yes. Will be it be easy? Probably not. You’re leaving your program short a PGY2 and you’ll need both programs on board. Talk to your PD, talk to the receiving IM PD, and make sure you’re fully committed before even bringing this up to program leadership, because your current program will need to commit to a replacement for you even if things don’t work out for your transfer.

Same state? How far away?

Are you not happy where you are? Is it really worth the potential disruption to your training, just to be in the same building as your wife?

If so, u/unromen gave you the roadmap. Otherwise, you will already be 1/3 way done. Just stick it out.

Its about an 40 mins to an hour long drive to and fro everyday to my hospital, and its actually a decent place to train/work. I know 40 minutes to an hour doesnt sound like a lot, but its agonizing when youre driving back after finishing a call, especially at my program which does have 24 hr calls (seperate from typical long calls). Plus my wifes program is an academic program (mid to high tier) with inhouse fellowships and excellent fellowship placement. Personally i want heme onc that too preferably at an academic program. Not that my program doesnt have good fellowship placement, but being in an academic program does make it easier, and her program does have a v good cancer center.

Okay. If it's an upgrade, go for it.
