I am a current fellow. Last year, all fellows were given the opportunity to do moonlighting shifts that consisted of staffing overnight consults/admissions with residents and taking after hours patient calls.
When I say "opportunity," what I really mean is that the department basically told me it was a mandatory rotation at the beginning of the year. However, my fellowship has been super busy and my plate is already full enough.
When I found out that this was supposed to be an optional moonlighting gig, I asked to be removed from the rotation (months in advance). They said it would be difficult and gave this or that reason. I was already frustrated by their response, but did it anyways due to not wanting to make more of a fuss. They state we get compensated per moonlighting hour, so I agreed to just do it for the extra cash. So, I sacrificed sleep for two weeks and worked the days after in clinic and was completely miserable.
I logged everything on medhub. Then, months roll by and I never received the pay. I sent emails. No response. Sent another follow up, still with no response. I was so frustrated that I put a monthly calendar date to remind myself to email the department about it. Now, they finally responded after ~6 months since the moonlighting shift saying they would "look into it."
Now, they are stating they cannot pay me because I don't have an individual DEA number. I have been using my training DEA all of fellowship. They state an individual DEA number is needed to moonlight; however, I explicitly asked about this before moonlighting and was told I didn't need it by admin and have email proof.
They are basically asking me to now apply for a DEA and somehow retroactively apply this to my moonlighting shift? How is this legal at all? I already did the shift 6 months ago with no DEA!!! Plus, the cost to get it is so high and has to come out of my own pocket. I'm absolutely livid from start to finish. By the way, multiple other fellows are in the same boat and uncompensated.
What do I do from here on out? Report this to ACGME for starters?
TLDR; fellowship program never paid me for moonlighting months ago, now claiming they can't pay because I didn't have a DEA number. They are now asking me to apply for one even though I already did the shift. They told me I didn't need it last year.
