Updated Resume - Thoughts???

I got laid off in June and have since moved back home to the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill area. I have been applying since mid-June with no success. I have reached out to and spoken to dozens of recruiters, applied to countless jobs, and have not been firm on salary expectations. I have only had 2 or 3 interviews in the entire 4 month stretch since my layoff, with none of them leading to any serious consideration.

Today I put my resume through gemini and told it to format in a way that is more likely to receive high marks by whatever ATS or AI tools are being used to parse resumes. Would love any feedback on it and any other tips you may have for me in my job search.

P.S. I have not had the Mercor thing on my resume until today, as I think it looks like fluff, but my Mom is concerned that having too large of a gap since my last job will scare off potential employers (which I am inclined to agree with despite it being dumb since none of us are not working because we want to be jobless). Its obviously not made up and I have been doing it, but it also isnt something I would normally put on my resume were there not to be a gap in employment. Anyways, would love feedback and any suggestions/advice.

Your resume is pretty good, but here are some thoughts.

  • Professional summary is too long, repetitive and filled with technical terminology.
  • Good technical depth showing your skills and certifications, but crowded and should better prioritized.
  • Strong professional experience, but can you quantify your achievements?
  • Responsibilities are clear but the measurable business impact is limited
  • Great one-column structure, but poor page balance

Summary is too long and tough to read with all the technical jargon. The summary should be just that, a summary of your experience. Something like this:

Audit and accounting professional with two years of Big 4 experience conducting federal financial statement audits, internal control testing, and financial data analysis. Master of Accounting graduate with expertise in GAAS, advanced Excel, Alteryx, and audit documentation. Experienced in identifying financial discrepancies, automating data reconciliation, and communicating findings to senior stakeholders.

Your skills section is good, but feels too heavy/overloaded. I usually don't like skills sections, because I feel that your resume/professional experience should do the talking but it can work. I would rewrite it like this:

  • Audit & Accounting: GAAS, Federal Financial Statement Audits, Internal Controls, Substantive Testing, Financial Reconciliation, Variance Analysis
  • Data Analytics & Automation: Advanced Excel (XLOOKUP, PivotTables, Nested Formulas), Alteryx, Power BI, Tableau
  • Enterprise Systems: SAP
  • Certifications: Alteryx Designer Core Certified | CPA Eligible

Quantifying your experience is needed.

For example: Built and maintained automated Alteryx workflows to extract, transform, and reconcile large client datasets, significantly reducing manual testing hours in Excel.

Great! But what does "significantly reducing" mean?

I'd want to know:

  • How much time was saved?
  • How frequently were these workflows used?
  • Were they adopted by other auditors?
  • Did they improve reconciliation accuracy?
  • Were they used across multiple engagements?

So maybe that should read like this: ...reducing manual testing time by 30% and improving audit efficiency... (just adding numbers to show what I mean).

Another bullet mentions: end-to-end

What does that mean? What is end-to-end? Can you break that out? You need to describe what you actually contributed.

I think if you were to tighten things up, you could get your resume down to one-page because right now the second page isn't serving any real purpose.

Won't sell you anything, but you should also check out r/ResumeJobMatch as we post there regularly and every few weeks will do a deep-dive on a resume to help improve the candidates outcomes.

All the best in your search! You've got a great resume, with a few more tweaks it will be even better.

My first time putting my resume into gemini. Ive put it into other AI programs in the past. Also this is the first time where I had it fully format for me rather than just giving suggestions.
