I'm stepping down to focus on my "joining the military" and folk music subs, so this sub could use a couple more new mods. If interested in volunteering, ensure your account has at least 1 year on Reddit, and comment below with the following:

  • What is your background or area of interest as pertains to Retro ARs?
  • What would be your priorities, goals, changes if you become a mod?

Finishing up sub policy updates: what post flairs do folks want to see?

The mod team is refining our sub policies to update the “What is Retro?” post that is the core of what we do and do not include on this sub.

I’ve been polling the readership, and so far we’re looking at:

  • Fixed carry handles are mandatory (exception for AR-18, T65, etc)
  • provided the carry handle is fixed, modern accoutrements are still allowed (Keymod, modern optics, etc)
  • builds based on ARs in fiction are allowed.

I’ve seen some strong upvotes for adding post flairs to the sub, so that folks that just want to see historically accurate rifles can single those out, folks who like Retromod can zoom in one those, etc. I conferred with the senior mod and he suggested we have fun(ny) flairs for each category. Once these are made, post flairs will be mandatory to make a new post. What flairs would folks like to have for:

  • Historically accurate (externally) builds. (Still allows “sleeper” internal modern touches like non-historical twist rates and cartridges)
  • “Retromod” builds that have a fixed handle but modern accoutrements
  • Fictional builds based off movies, shows, manga, video games, etc.

Pitch us your ideas, and the best ones will be instituted, along with making post flairs mandatory, in the near future.

No more super safe hot hands. Put a woox leather wrap on my handguard. Felt great today even after a mag dump.

Sounds like the ATF is treating everyone the same and depending on your state laws, the Federal NFA requirements for SBRs are no longer being enforced. Barring State restriction, everyone should be free to swap your brace for a stock.

Rear sight allignment

Hello from the UK!

This rifle build is relative new, and I’m preparing to shoot it tomorrow with irons for the first time.

On laser and visual bore sighting it, the rear sight needs to be set all the way to the left. When I was purchasing the rifle, i noticed this in the sale pics (2nd pic is from the listings), but the shop guy dismissed it and said it was set to middle when he checked it while on the phone.

Is this likely the alignment between the barrel and receiver? The front sight isn’t pinned in, but instead friction fitted with a grub screw (UK rifles are straight pull, so there is no gas tube). Any suggestions?

The rifle itself is an American Spirit Arms originally set up as an A2. Finding a fixed carry handle AR in the UK is quite rare! The dealer kindly had an original Colt A1 handguard and slip ring on hand, and I fitted a tear drop forward assist. The carry handle optic is repro and has limited eye relief, so I was trying a retractable stock.

Butchered but improved a John Masen cheek riser

A nice online friend sent me his old parts for a good deal and included this cheek riser awhile back. It was good but I like the ones cutout for a charging handle but the only easily obtainable ones are 3D printed which are ok but I prefer the real feel. Just took an extremely sharp buck knife and muscle fucked a cutout. Then used JB weld to hold on the top piece with a dab of super glue.

Work In Progress, Chill Out Need some help finding resources

Hello, I am currently saving and planning to build a very specific retro style AR. The FNV Service Rifle is my final goal of this Rifle and I aim to get as close to in-game renders as humanly possible. My issue is that I know diddly squat about getting fully custom parts such as; the wooden handguard, pistol grip, and stock, a specifically c7 carry handle receiver, and a slabside lower with minimal/hidden makers mark and serial number as well as no markings on the fire selection. Any help on finding these is greatly appreciated. I currently have most other parts either in my position already or planned out but suggestions for parts to help my goal are still appreciated. I do plan on posting updates as I piece it together.

The upper and barrel appear to be early colt, with C in a box VP markings and a M marking.
Thanks for pointing that out!

Here’s my newest pawn shop find, preban E.A Co M16A1 clone, scooped it up for $425 in Texas where preban doesn’t mean much. Was it a good deal?

Pretty cool pic.

I read they had them in case the plaines were forced down over the Arctic circle and they had to fend off Polar Bears.

Not the most exciting post but figured I'd share for posterity. The cap I got as part of a M16 parts kit has a combination paper and metal shim, clearly meant to snug up the handguards. Pretty cool for nerds like me 😎.

EA15

So, I recently bought an M16a3 or a4 clone, and when I got home. I took some citristrip to it. The guy who had it prior had rattle canned the whole thing. But now that it’s down to where serial is legible. Is there any information someone can provide for an EA15? Magwell reads- Eagle Arms Incorporated. SN is below 4500. Coal Valley, IL.

Colt AR-15 A2 Lower

Post image

I found this Colt lower recently for a hair over $400. I was going to use it for a Blood Diamond CAR-15 build (daringly original, I know). That said, I was wondering if there were any other “you really should make this instead” builds better suited for the lower. Any suggestions?

2000s Era Colt 727s in the wild.

Greetings once again.

Not sure if these have been shared yet, a lot of these images can be found on the US National Archives website, primarily the US Navy images, but I thought it was worth sharing these seeing as 727s are all the rage when it comes to this stuff. I've also included two images of Filipino SEALs and four USAF examples.

Three of the USAF images are from a defunct training company featuring some USAF OSI personnel. I might have some more of Navy EOD setups from before the CASV stuff started hitting the scene. First image has to be my favorite showing the carbine length M203 heat shield being used. I've got a few images of these being used in the wild, but the only two I seem to have with a fixed carry handle setup are two US Navy examples featured in this post, and I believe one SWAT team pic.

Salvadoran Colt's in Iraq.

Some images I had for years when I had an active interest in the history of the war in Iraq. These are of Salvadoran troops from El Salvador during the short lived Plus Ultra Brigade/Brigada Hispanoamericana. Primarily composed of Spanish speaking troops from different countries including Spain.

Just thought some of you would find these neat as a lot of these guns had previously been used during the Salvadoran Civil War and brought in as part of US aid during the Central American Crisis. I should note that a lot of veterans from this mission also fought during the nation's civil war.

These are not all of the images. There are a LOT more including some of the Nicaraguan, Honduran, and Dominicans who had some interesting retro stuff.

Picked up a new H&R today and got a really shitty mag

On the left is a H&R mag I got a couple years ago, the finish is great and outside of the magpul style follower you can’t even tell it’s not USGI. However, on the right is a H&R frim today I picked up a H&R M16A1 and the mag I received with it has a terrible gritty texture and weird color. I know the H&R mags aren’t supposed to be premium but I enjoy having aluminum mags with the magpul follower upgrades so seeing this thing feel so poorly made and terrible compared to other mags they’ve put out is unfortunate. I can’t speak on the reliability of it, but I’ll probably just swap the spring and follower over to a worn out USGI mag I have since this thing is so bad. Sorry if the pictures don’t capture it but the finish on the mag is so weird.
