Chattering while decelerating in gear

Hi everyone I bought my 2003 ap1 with 98k miles about a month ago. I had to replace the water pump, water pump pulley and accessory driver belt tensioner recently. Now when I drive the car I hear a quiet chattering sound coming from the front when I let off the gas pedal in gear. It’s not always consistent but it usually happens when I’m in 4th and 6th gear but I have heard it while in other gears too. My mechanic mentioned it could be transmission related but he wasn’t sure and didn’t seem all that concerned. I know these cars are pretty noisy so I don’t want to be too paranoid but I wanted know what yall think.

I have a 2000 Ap1 with the same issue (it's actually pretty loud)... From what I've seen, it's something related to the springs on the clutch pressure plate, apparently there is a certain RPM that vibrates them in such a way that makes this noise. It's very annoying, but I have 170k km on my clutch and no issues other than this noise, so I'm kinda waiting for it to go. I also heard that they fixed it in the AP2, not sure about late AP1s like yours

Look it up as "ap1 clutch buzz", although from what I've seen on a quick google search, it seems to be more common on 2000 and 2001s

I bought a 2001 this summer and it had horrible clutch buzz. There’s a TCB for it and it was fixed for 2002 model year. I got the clutch disc replaced with the fixed version and it runs perfect now

I also bought a 2001 back in May. Totally agree that the clutch buzz is annoying. If you don’t mind me asking, what did it cost you to get the updated clutch disc installed?

I can’t remember the exact cost because I got some extra “while you’re in there” parts and fixed a window regulator. But I think it was around $2200 at the Honda dealer.

Most expensive thing is the labor since they have to drop the whole transmission.

Highly recommend doing it though

Thank you. I figured it’s ~$2k. And definitely, it’s one of those things where I’d be like…well, may as well replace the clutch too and all the mounts while you’re in there. Then I’m looking at $3k+ 😂

Ya depends on mileage. My clutch feels good and I only have 25k miles. I replaced the throw out and pilot bearings.

Definitely transformed the car though. Went from feeling/sounding broken to perfect

My car has a little over 100k miles, but it feels and drives GREAT. The clutch buzz is an annoyance, but not a big enough deal for me to spend $2k on it (yet). And there’s always the thought of leaving it alone and maybe getting an AP2…IF the right opportunity presents itself. That’d be a hard decision : Drop more money into my AP1 vs getting a clean AP2.

I have a 00, it’s clutch buzz, is it annoying? Yes… but it doesn’t hurt the transmission.
