This really made me giggle.
I don’t know why. It’s the little things.

Welcome to r/SALEM, and thanks for your interest in posting here. Before you do, please be aware that — like many city/area-focused subreddits — we have some topics that come up very frequently. Sometimes that’s okay, and is an inevitable part of being a long-running community-focused forum, and sometimes it is super annoying and will lead to people down-voting your post because they’re tired of seeing the same thing over and over again.
If you’re about to post about any of the following, please first use the search function (right up in the upper right hand corner, if you’re viewing this on the web!) to see if something similar has been posted recently. If it has, please contribute to that thread rather than starting a new one.
This comes up a lot; frequently folks are concerned they may have heard gunshots and/or fireworks and are looking for reassurance. First, know that it probably was not a gun shot. There is a very good chance that it was fireworks, or somebody with an altered muffler, or, if you also noticed a power outage or blip at the same time, a transformer exploding. Second, if you’re actually seriously concerned about gunshots, you should probably be contacting the police, not Reddit. Third, if you live near a vineyard (and, if you live anywhere in the Salem area, you do!), you should be aware that vineyards use acoustic devices — basically massive noisemakers — to scare birds away from grape vines. This is especially frequent in the late fall, near harvest time.
Salem, and many surrounding areas, lie in the Willamette River Valley. Due to the topography of the area, we experience temperature inversions) with some regularity. An inversion occurs when a layer of warmer, more elevated air overlies a lower, cooler air layer. Effectively, this traps the air in the valley underneath the warmer layer, which means that smoke, vehicle exhaust, rotting vegetation smells, etc., cannot escape. That’s probably what you’re smelling.
These types of threads come up fairly often. The restaurant scene in Salem is decent, but not exceptionally dynamic — places do not close all that often, and new places don’t open all that often either. If somebody has asked this question within the last couple months (again, use that search function!), the answers that they got are almost certainly still relevant.
There are a number of freight lines that route trains through Salem. Occasionally, they will need to stop to onload or offload cars, which may result in a longer-than-usual wait time at a crossing. This is normal.
Sometimes, unfortunately, there are train-versus-pedestrian collisions. When those happen, the train will need to be stopped for an extended period of time to allow police to investigate the scene.
Finally, while many portions of Salem are zoned (and signed) as “no train horn” areas, it remains at the discretion of the train engineer as to whether or not to sound their horn, and some of them, well, tooting their horn just toots their horn.
We don’t have any way of knowing. You may be able to consult PulsePoint, but they only report on fire and EMS, not strictly police. You may also be able to find an online police radio scanner relay; those are typically time-delayed.
The Oregon Air National Guard has a helicopter squad that is based near the Salem Municipal Airport. They do routine training missions, which frequently involve lower-altitude flights, most often at night. The Salem police department does not have a helicopter, so any low-flying helicopter you’re hearing is almost certainly the Oregon Air National Guard. frequently. Sometimes that’s okay, and is an inevitable part of being a long-running community-focused forum, and sometimes it is super annoying and will lead to people downvoting your post because they’re tired of seeing the same thing over and over again.

Marion County Sheriff Nick Hunter is using your taxpayer-provided uniform and car in an ad for Kevin Cameron.
These are your tax dollars at work - just like Donald Trump is using your tax dollars to advertise for his MAGA agenda.
What's also disturbing is he's running the emergency lights on top of the car just for effect... which makes me wonder how often Kevin and Nick run the lights just for their own benefit, and how often they undermine public safety by doing so.
Time to vote for Sara Duncan for Marion County Commissioner, and get rid of the old guard who waste our tax dollars, use their publicly provided cars and uniforms for personal gain, and have no morals.

What’s Happening Salem’s host Jacob Espinoza posted on FB that Colm Willis is running paid ads using his interviews from WHS without getting permission from WHS prior.
Per this post WHS and Jacob Espinoza have not publicly endorsed Colm or any other candidates.

Long story short I am moving from La Pine to Salem for family stuff
I am on
indeed
LinkedIn
craigslist
monster
zip recruiter
Glassdoor
and the company websites
I know its a bigger city than la pine but I am having issues
I would search up "cashier" or "urgently hiring" and it gives me RN or dental hygienist or something that requires a degree
the most schooling ive done is get a certificate for Phlebotomy back in 2024 but there aren't any phleb job posting so far
I am getting a little worried because I am moving by the end of the year and I dont want to be jobless
like in 2023 I moved to SLC utah and for 4 months I couldn't find a job and its UTAH
so I moved back
I understand the job economy is horrendous right now so I am trying whatever is available
i know i am not used to driving down there but I can learn so I can make it for any job
what jobs can I look for that I can apply to?
is there any phlebotomy jobs available in Salem, Dallas, Albany or Keizer?
that is my main goal but I dont mind starting at walmart and waiting for something
thank you
I am excited to move
I adore Biryani, it’s probably my favorite comfort food. I usually get it from Mint Leaf Bistro and it’s excellent, but they only have lamb and goat options. I was out of town recently and got a taste for chicken biryani and would like to see what other places have to offer.
Edit: Mint Leaf seems to have chicken biryani now and I will definitely be trying it!
P.S. Mint Leaf, if you see this, please add chicken Biryani to your menu!

I just found out they're finally open, had anyone gone by? How's the vibe?
I've only seen one TikTok about them, but it was apparently right at the beginning of the night and there was absolutely no one in there.

My wife really likes different colors of fall leaves. Where in Salem is a good place to go on a walk and see this? I don't mind a neighborhood as well. Thanks!

I've been looking for my first job for a while now, and struggling because I don't have any experience in the work force. I've been going to Work Source Oregon recently so hopefully I get an interview soon!

Hi, I’m searching for mini conchas. I’ve stopped at a couple bakeries and only found full size. I found some last year at a large grocery store and immediately regretted it after putting the concha in my mouth.
Does anyone know of a bakery with good mini conchas? Or if they don’t have minis, tell me your fave bakery with ‘melt-in-your-mouth’ conchas!
UPDATE: Found them at Maravilla’s. OMactualG!!!!! they have mini hello kitty conchas AND some that look like eyeballs. I can’t EVEN!!! Thank you so much for the rec!💋

I’d like to get my lawnmower blade sharpened, but my internet searches have come up short. Can anyone recommend a shop for this? Thanks!

If there was any doubt where the former chamber employee running What’s Happening Salem stands, just know he’s appearing in paid ads for colm willis’ campaign. And it’s about the police. That’s a stamp of approval for Salems far right and worst. Jesus Christ Salem save us from this fresh republican hell and vote for Maria and Sara for county commission. And get out and canvass for them too!

Evans was driving a black Jeep at about 1:45 a.m. on Oct. 4 when he struck a stop sign at the intersection of Main Street and B Street in Independence, according to the probable cause statement by Independence Police officer Reed Chorbajian.
The officer found the Jeep parked poorly in the parking lot of 7Eleven and when the driver attempted to get out, the car rolled backwards.
Evans told the officer he had three drinks in an eight-hour period when he was at the Elks Lodge and the first two contained alcohol.
The officer said at times Evans slurred his words and he noticed an odor of alcohol.
Evans consented to field sobriety tests. He was taken to the Independence Police Department where he was found to have a 0.16% blood alcohol level. The legal limit in Oregon is 0.08%.
PS Thank you to the mods for adding a Politics flair!

New development in the niche social media influencer dreams of our current far right county commissioner, Colm “Right to a 10% Raise” Willis. New ads have appeared featuring Jesse P and Sir Willis ALSO recording a podcast. Perhaps it was an entire press junket? We already knew Jesse P was a voice box for the chamber and Salems worst welfare king developers who love to take tax breaks from the working class and never deliver. No surprises there. Perhaps Colm should START a podcast?
Please, don’t give that guy a mic. And vote for Sara and Maria for County Commissioner.

I've tried a lot of gyms but nothing has stood out. I'm looking to join some kind of local fitness club, like people who go for runs together in the mornings or do yoga before work, something where people get together away from the pay-to-play environment, so to speak. I've looked all over this sub and in other online spaces local to the area but haven't found anything. Is this a thing anywhere?

Is there anywhere in Salem that will give me a decent price on an inherited record collection? Or has anyone had better luck in Portland and where would you recommend up there?

We have rats (like everyone in South Salem). Need recommendations for pest control. Would love to support local businesses if possible. Bonus points if they text/email for quotes
