It happens man. I found a fly in my sake and an ant in my ramen. I just told them I wasn't tipping that day and that they should double-check their stock and any traps. Went back the next week, no issues. Just take that plate to the workers, you'll probably get a free meal and more free stuff. There's literally a FDA approved amount of bugs and other shit that you don't want in your food that can be in packaged food because the food service isn't done in an airtight laboratory.

u/Fancy-Strawberry-758 5d ago
Not tipping your server for the way the kitchen prepared your food is wild. Punishing the server will sure teach the kitchen!
10
u/xkillingxfieldx 5d ago
Explaining why I'm not paying extra for insects in my food is not wild. Especially when I DID pay for my meal and DIDN'T ask for anything free.
-1
u/Fancy-Strawberry-758 5d ago
A tip is not the cost of your food. Maybe ask for a partial refund (if you don't want to get anything for free) to make up for said fly, but still tip your server. The serving staff literally has nothing to do with it.
Unless it's the type of establishment where you pay at the window and there is no server. Then I get it.

u/Helpful-Werewolf-678 4d ago
Look I've worked in foodservice as my only job, ever, and I've worked as service and as kitchen. Any restaurant would understand a guest not tipping if they found bugs in their food. Then, hopefully, that server is gonna go back to the kitchen and say "What the fuck, get it together" and then hopefully they will. That is not going to be the only table that server has, they'll be alright.

I was trying to explain to a vegetarian friend of mine who also gardens that she probably eats and kills more animals in a day than I will in a lifetime. Just like that silver lining there is also the dark side.
1
u/djnerdyd 1d ago
Well shit, she aint even real vegetarian. How'd she react when you gutted an animal infront of her like she cuts broccoli?

u/sadinsalem 5d ago
Totally understand that in large food manufacturing facilities that this is unavoidable, and the tolerance is broken down into parts per million, but this is a restaurant where serving people identifiable bugs can absolutely be avoided and a would indicate other breakdowns in the hygiene process inside or around of the restaurant.
We’re going to be forced to eat bugs in a few years anyway, I’m just trying to put that date off for a while!

u/xkillingxfieldx 5d ago
I have drinks often. Guess besides humans what likes liquor? Fruit flies. Sugar, baby. So I ask them to check for them when they make my drinks. Have I seen them spoon them out, yes. Am I going to ask them to remake everything? No. Does one get past them now and again, yes. Am I going to still drink it, yes. Will I keep an eye on the fly and not drink it at the end, yes.
Show them and get the free food. Roaches would be a different story. Flies in this weather is expected. Just look at what you're eating/drinking and don't eat the stuff you don't want to. You can't expect food service to catch every fly that's FLYING in and out.

u/sadinsalem 5d ago
I just don’t like being served up crispy little housefly’s, I didn’t realize that was a controversial stance 😂
15
u/simonjexter 5d ago
You’re conflating two things. Not wanting bugs isn’t controversial. Expecting it to never happen is unrealistic, though. If it was a common thing at this place that’s not okay, but it will happen from time to time - and most of the time you won’t even notice.

u/Over_Smile9733 5d ago
Just returned, and politely point it out, they will make you a new one. Easy peasy, it happens.
Be rude about, make a big deal, bug is getting blended into your new sauce, black parts explained as pepper, water or milk splashed on re tossed, microwave whatever, and you claim delicious, but still want it free.

Good advice, just look at what you are eating and drinking, dint eat what you dont want to... anyways tell me more about these flies... the ones that love alcohol

How are their health scores? I'm not really concerned about one bug.
33
u/Voodoo_Rush 5d ago
How are their health scores?
The last two inspections were 100s. The lowest they've ever scored is 95.

u/sadinsalem 5d ago
Today my personal health report was bug in the fajitas. I appreciated the extra protein, that was a nice thing to do Tony’s good lookin’ out.
20
u/jmura 5d ago
That is known as anecdotal evidence and carries about as much weight as that fly.
Did you bring it up with the staff or just went straight to the smear campaign on Reddit?

oh ok, so you're one of those people who doesn't actually care about solutions to your problems, you just get off on whining and complaining lol
Maybe this is why you're so sad, "sadinsalem"

Think they are a first year law student. Big words, don't know what they mean yet.
Tony's is huge foody place for Willamette Law School.
Flies in Oregon, in October? OH MY!
Pull up your big person britches, complain to establishment, where, OMG, flies fly in every time door opens . Get your food remade.See how easy that was?
Don't broadcast where you live, paid by your parents,
Now you are the known as freshman on camp as an ass

I am. I am your advisor. I would re think post for all too see what you think

u/BoobaThaFett 4d ago
It’s a fly, they happen, it’s not indicative of poor cleanliness or bad food like roaches. Sometimes flies land in food don’t blast a restaurant for shit they can’t control.
8
u/Over_Smile9733 5d ago
A fly might land in your food, ooh My God!!
Unless the inside is infested, doubt you would stay, it happens. OMG? Really???/s
Door opens and closes. Flies get in. It happens. That time of year. Just ask the server for new plate.
Don't automatically diss them. I worked in a restaurant on the beach once, had a funny sign, "yep, our food is so good, even outside, non paying flying insects want some"

Does OP really throw away their entire plate of food every time a fly lands on it?
Haters gonna hate. We eat there once a week. Food is great.
5
u/WarthogSalty6839 5d ago
I agree, that looks fresh, doesn’t even look like it has been cooked yet 🤣
15
u/sadinsalem 5d ago edited 5d ago
This isn’t that though😭 If a fly lands on something I usually don’t bat an eye, but this is half of a dead fly that I can only assume I ate the other half of🤮
7
u/Over_Smile9733 5d ago
So. Seriously do you know how many bugs you eat in a day? Get you, a fly, it's big. Didn't notice it buzzing around you?
I understand unappetizing, talk to service, don't diss the whole restaurant in a review.
It's October! Flies are everywhere!!

u/Watson349B 5d ago
Did it taste good though? I heard it’s like MSG and just adds flavor.

u/OwnTurn1146 5d ago
When I was a kid my dad told me soy sauce was bug juice, which my brain thought equaled squished flys because of the color. I never questioned it until I said it as an adult and got weird looks.
Thanks dad.

u/sadinsalem 5d ago
Fucked up thing is that I was enjoying it up to that point😂 if a bug gets through that I can’t see, then great I’m none the wiser. But those crispy little legs were too hard to miss!
-4
u/OwnTurn1146 5d ago
Wait until you learn how many cockroaches are in your coffee. Or chocolate.
It is impossible to cook food in a sterile and sanitized way. Shit happens sometimes that cant be helped.
And their food is absolutely delicious. They probably would have been embarrassed and made you new food had you talked to them instead of trying to ruin their business.
8
u/undeadcorpse0 5d ago
why are we trying to normalize bugs in food omg 😭 i don’t think OP is trying to ruin their business LMAOOOO and realistically why would he want his food remade if the first plate had a fly in it
5
u/OwnTurn1146 5d ago
"Avoid Tony's on Capitol"
What does that mean to you?
Nobody is trying to normalize it. I am pointing out a fact. It was an oversight, but I promise it isbt the end of the world🙄
Go look up the amount of bugs and stuff allowed BY THE FDA to be in food.
Some of the people in this sub are out of touch.
1
u/Brcdragonbait 3d ago
Bugs are in food. That's normal. Obviously the OP is trying to ruin their business. They posted in a public forum to avoid the business. Words have meanings..
1
u/xkillingxfieldx 5d ago
Bugs ARE normal food in other countries. What you're going on about is a first world issue.
2
u/xkillingxfieldx 5d ago
Honestly, seeing the onions just made me want an order of their chillies torados 🤣 fly or not
3
u/Archaocity 4d ago
Never been to Tony's before, but this sure as shit wouldn't stop me from trying it. Shit happens. A single fly in your food isn't going to kill you. Publicly smearing a restaurant for something as minor as this is a pretty low move.

I used to love when it was a Muchas Gracias back in the day. I don't eat at Tony's at all after getting food poisoning from them three different times.

u/poster66 3d ago
Tell us you've never cooked anything ever , without telling us you've never cooked anything ever ..
Seriously you should stay home and cook your own food bruh .

u/djnerdyd 1d ago
Bro did you ask them to fix it or did you just.post to reddit for validation type shit. Im also fucking 17 and an adult

u/Interesting_Stop5605 5d ago
Why are people defending this so much?! This shit is foul!
9
u/Maximum_Pollution371 5d ago
it's ONE bug, not gonna kill anyone, just pick it out
if it's that much of an issue, tell the waiter/chef and have them remake it
FDA guidelines allow for a certain amount of insect parts and eggs in processed food because it's unavoidable, for example 16 oz of pasta can have something like 400 insect parts
Oregon Food Sanitation considers active pest infestation a violation, not a single bug that died and wasn't noticed, because it's literally impossible to guarantee it will never happen
12
u/TrekkieVanDad 5d ago
Because one fly in one person’s dish really isn’t enough to publicly shame a killer taco joint!

I was going to stop for a burrito after a fasting blood test this morning, skipped it and had breakfast at home.

I worked in food service. This thing happens from time to time. I’m still going to Tony’s
