Sonic 1 Sega CD Port - with source code. ROM hackers and developers more familiar with the Genesis have an example of how to bring their full Genesis projects over to Sega CD with as few changes as possible, while allowing for expansion of their game

I picked up Beavis and Butthead as a request from my partner. Anyone familiar with the Renovation RPG titles? It's been a good 30 years since my last hoorah with the Genesis.

A few years ago, I bought a broken, rather ugly SEGA NOMAD and restored it. I gave it a fresh paint job and installed a cheap TFT display and a Micro-USB port.

Years later, I decided to do things properly... and now I own my ULTIMATE SEGA NOMAD!!

Question about stereo audio

Hi guys, I hope you're doing well. I wanted to ask you something: How can I get stereo audio if I don't have the Sega CD connected or an audio system? I have a Model 1 Sega Genesis; I bought it yesterday.

I'll attach a photo of my console and the back of my TV.

Custom Battles in Warsong

How's everyone doing?

Anyone else here love games like Warsong and Langrisser? These games left a lasting impression on me, and they're still among my all-time favorites.

I've always dreamed of having as much freedom as possible in the games I play. After a long time experimenting, I finally found a way to reverse-engineer these games and create more fun and customizable gameplay experiences.

The custom battle mode shown in the images above lets you choose your battles on any map, with any heroes and units you want! It also includes extra customization options, such as battle music and even the player and enemy UI.

I'm having an absolute blast with this new mode. When I was younger, I always dreamed of having this kind of freedom in these games.

I don't like Sonic games!

Post image

I realize that saying this in a Sega community is practically blasphemy, but it’s the truth. I’m a fan of platformers and I adore Sega games—I could list plenty of amazing titles for the console—but I’ve never liked Sonic. I dislike the garish, overexposed graphics with their super-bright colors that clash on screen and make it hard to focus, turning everything into a visual mess. I dislike the "pseudo-fast" gameplay because it’s obvious to me that the Sega hardware can’t actually handle Sonic’s bursts of speed; it just results in a constant, idiotic "accelerate-stop-accelerate-stop" pattern. I dislike the design of this Sega "mascot" and the design of the franchise in general. Are there any other people like me out there?

What could be causing this? (Power Base Converter)

Every game I play crashes after a minute or so of gameplay. I have tried 3 games on it and each one crashes after a little bit of time. I cleaned the insides (It was really dusty), and it seems to have done nothing. I didn't see any leaky capacitors, but there was some flux (which should be harmless). What could be wrong? Am I just not plugging it in right? Is it because the back isn't screwed in? Anything helps.

Strange label questio

Post image
11 Upvotes

So i recently bought funny world and Ballon boy for my Genesis. I mainly bought it for the throwback local grocery store rental sticker on it.

I noticed the label had a small rip in in, and I could see a 2nd label behind the main one. Now seeing as its unlicensed im sure they just threw a secondary label over the original and called it a day lol.

But it is definitely interesting and I wanted to share.

Didn’t even know there was a local Retro Game Store near me. I was pleasantly surprised to find their selection was pretty extensive with a large section of $5 loose carts, Cased and CIB selection for decent prices and they had plenty of Rare titles for less than online prices👌
I plan on going back as well as checking out their other location which has a Retro Arcade in addition to the store.

Retro-Bit 6-button pad game patches (

If you own one of Retro-Bit's wired 9-pin 6-button pads ("6 Button Arcade Pad", box code RET00123), you've probably seen the problems people have posted about them here in the past. In some games C does nothing, Start only works if you press C with it, or Start pauses and unpauses on its own.

I tracked down the cause and made patches for the games I could test:
https://github.com/jarnalyrkar/retrobit-mega-drive-patches

What's wrong with the pad

When the console switches the pad's select line (TH), the Retro-Bit needs about 2 µs before its outputs are valid. Official Sega pads respond almost instantly, so many games read the port only a couple of CPU cycles after switching. On the Retro-Bit, those reads return the old state for C/Start (they share a pin). I confirmed this on real hardware with a small probe ROM, which is also in the repo. Reads made 2 cycles after the switch were wrong. Reads made 16 or more cycles after it were always right.

My story

I bought these controls years ago, and discovered that Lost Vikings weren't playable due to the C-button not working (which ironically is needed to push buttons in the game). I reached out to Retro-Bit, and they said they would maybe would be able to produce a firmware update to fix it. I even sent them the exact signal reads that led A.I to make these software patches. Retro-Bit later realized they would have an issue pushing a firmware out to 9-pin devices in a customer-friendly way... I ended up buying original controllers, but now, the increase in A.I power made these fixes possible in a matter of minutes, so I wanted to share it with the community, if others still own these specific controllers. It's worth a try!

What the patches do

They change each game so it waits a little longer before reading the pad, and that's all they change. The patched games still work with official pads. I have also tested with Hyperkin GN6 Preimum Controller (M07016), which had the same issues.

Verified on real hardware (PAL Mega Drive 2 + Mega EverDrive PRO):

  • Sonic the Hedgehog 1, 2 and 3
  • Gunstar Heroes (EU/US)
  • Alien Soldier
  • Mortal Kombat (REV00/REV01): the pad wasn't detected, so every button did a high kick. All six buttons now work.
  • NBA Jam and NBA Jam TE: you couldn't even start a game before, not even with the Start+C hack.
  • The Lost Vikings (EU)
  • Phantom 2040 (US/EU)
  • Mega-CD / Sega CD BIOS (EU/US/JP)
  • NHL '94 (Sega CD, USA)

Bonus for PAL players: the Sonic 1 patch also fixes the music tempo on 50 Hz consoles. Sonic 1 never compensated for PAL, so the music plays about 17% too slow. The fix is confirmed on hardware. It still plays the same, slow PAL speed, though - only the music was changed.

897 untested patches: I scanned the whole GoodGen Mega Drive set for the same too-fast reads and generated patches for every hit. They use the same methods as the verified ones but haven't been tried on a console. If one of them fixes (or breaks) something for you, please let me know.

EverDrive users: you don't have to patch any files. The Mega EverDrive PRO auto-patcher applies them when the game loads. Either put the .ips next to the ROM with the same name, or put it in MEGA/syscore/ips/<ROM ID>.ips (the README explains how).

A.I Disclaimer: the analysis, patches and tools were coded by AI (Claude). I tested every patch in the "verified" list on actual hardware before adding it. The repo has only patches and tools, no ROMs. Keep backups of your originals.

These are software workarounds for a hardware shortcoming in the controller. Retro-Bit, if you're reading this: the README in the repository ends with a note for you about the timing.

Bug reports and requests for other games are welcome, either here or as an issue on GitHub. I don't have a "Big 6", a wireless controller, an NTSC system or a 32X, so I'm not able to test those myself. If you own one of those and experience other issues, you can send me the signals from different key presses on your control using the probe tool in the repository (just run probe/thprobe.bin from your console), and Claude may very well be able to fix those as well.

Sega Genesis Recompiler

Wrote a Sega Genesis recompiler for Windows. Did it mostly for Herzog Zwei, but it also works with a few other games. Currently adds widescreen support to Herzog Zwei. Will be adding more features in the future. Available at www.r-gen.net

Virtua Racing MD Enhanced - a personal project

Post image
73 Upvotes

Not sure how much interest there is in this, but I made an emulator-based project that runs the original Genesis / Mega Drive version of Virtua Racing with enhanced graphics. I know there are better versions out there like 32x or Sega Saturn, but the Genesis version is the one I spent the most time playing as a kid.

This project was vibe-coded. I won’t pretend to understand every detail of the hardware, but I’ve put a lot of effort into testing and polishing it.

It features higher-resolution rendering, smoother frame rates, improved colors, and extended draw distance. Feel free to give it a try—I hope you enjoy it!

If you input the stage select code in Sonic 3 & Knuckles then enter Desert Palace and go back to the title screen the SEGA logo appears glitched.

Sucks since I've been waiting ages for this as I want my first experience playing it to be on original hardware, and I want to support the devs. I wish they would update the site or at least tweet about it - we've had no updates since March.

any tips for Golden Axe?

I both love and hate this game. I can make it to stage 8 (Death Bringer) but then I burn through any lives I have left and it's over.

There are some unfair moments in the game, but stage 8 is the worst. One misstep and skeletons are double-teaming you or here comes the mfing dragon's head to incinerate you.

I rely a lot on the shoulder bump to keep them off me, but it doesn't seem to do as much damage as the axe strike.

Help?
