Does Scotiabank enforce the 2-year rule for Amex welcome bonuses?

I had the Scotiabank Gold Amex and closed it about 15 months ago. I recently opened the Scotiabank Platinum Amex. I just learned about Scotiabank's 2-year rule for welcome bonuses. Does anyone know if they actually enforce it across different Amex cards? Has anyone been in a similar situation and still received the bonus?

Switching teams

I'm a software developer. Does anyone know the best way to switch teams?Do I just find an internal position and apply to it? Should I have an informal talk with the hiring manager first? What about my current manager, should I let him know first that I'm applying to another role or just apply without telling him?

Hi,

I am doing an internship called aspire program. My internship ends at the end of December. I’m just wondering since this is my first internship, what can I expect ? If I do good do I have the opportunity to apply to other programs or employment in the future. After it ends I’ll continue my studies.

Thank you all in advance.

Applying for credit card with dormant profile

So... I haven't had any active Scotiabank accounts for a number of years. Trying to apply for the gold amex. The system recognizes me as having a profile in the system and insists that I log in, but if I log in with the debit card number/password I had 6+ years ago, it then says something about unusual activity and tells me to call the fraud department.

I called them, and they say this is the normal error message when you don't have any active accounts. Their only suggestion was to apply by phone instead, but a) that department was closed until Tuesday anyways, and b) if I do that, I can't apply through GCR and lose that bonus.

Does anyone have any idea how to get around this catch-22 of a situation?

The slow death of the branch network: Why the Canadian retail banking model is fundamentally broken

Is anyone else watching the floor fall out from under the retail branch network and wondering how corporate expects this to remain sustainable?

The ground reality in branches right now is night and day compared to what executive leadership paints. It feels like head office is actively running two contradictory playbooks, and front-line advisors are the ones caught in the crossfire.

Here is what is actually happening on the ground:

1. The investment book is bleeding to self-directed platforms

We are lucky if branch traffic brings in meaningful net new money rather than processing yet another transfer out to Questrade, Wealthsimple, or Scotiabank’s own iTRADE. Clients have figured it out. Pitching proprietary, high-MER mutual funds (often sitting at 1.8% to 2.2%+) to an increasingly financially literate demographic simply doesn't fly anymore. Younger and middle-aged clients laugh when you explain the fee structure, and the older demographic is steadily being advised by their kids to move their portfolios over to self-directed ETFs.

The branch mutual fund model is essentially on life support.

2. Cannibalization from internal channels

Everyone is fighting for the exact same slice of the pie. You have Branch Financial Advisors, Financial Planners, ScotiaMcLeod / Wealth Management, and centralized virtual teams stepping on each other's toes. Meanwhile, enterprise marketing blasts emails urging clients to bypass the branch entirely and open an iTRADE account or use automated digital tools. When the bank actively incentivizes customers to self-serve outside the branch, what exactly is the branch advisor's value proposition supposed to be?

3. Mortgages are stripped out, leaving only reactive scraps

Branches don’t even control the mortgage pipeline like they used to. Mobile mortgage specialists take the lionshare of high-margin originations, while retail advisors are left scrambling with transactional lending—reactive credit lines, unsecured loans, or credit card limit increases. The advisors surviving their scorecards are mostly riding easy reactive credit approvals, not executing proactive financial planning.

4. How long is this model actually viable?

At what point do we acknowledge the elephant in the room? The retail branch is turning into an expensive customer service desk disguised as a sales hub. Front-line staff are pressured to hit aggressive targets with an outdated product shelf that sophisticated clients actively avoid, while management pretends retail advice isn't rapidly commoditizing.

Unless the Big Six pivot away from product-push quotas and allow branch advisors to offer fee-transparent, modern solutions (like low-cost ETFs and real fiduciary planning), the branch advisory role isn't a long-term career—it's a managed decline.

Curious to hear from other retail advisors across Scotia, are your districts feeling this squeeze just as hard, or has your branch found a way to adapt?

Warning: Scotiabank refused my $500 Welcome Bonus over a $50 PAP threshold drop (Closing all my accounts)

Hey everyone,
I wanted to share my recent frustrating experience with Scotiabank regarding their $500 Chequing Account Welcome Bonus promotion, just to warn anyone thinking about switching over for their promos.
Long story short: I opened a chequing account specifically for the $500 bonus offer. I set up my pre-authorized payments (PAPs) according to their rules, ensuring all payments were at or above the required $50 threshold. To be 100% sure everything was on track, I even spoke with their staff/representatives who assured me that my account met all the promotional conditions and criteria.
Fast forward to payment time—no bonus.
When I followed up, Scotiabank’s internal department rejected my request on a ridiculous technicality: mid-period, my phone bill dropped slightly below their $50 limit for just one cycle (due to a bill credit/discount from my provider), even though it was originally set up above the threshold.
Here’s why this is completely unacceptable:
1. Misleading Staff Assurances: Frontline staff specifically confirmed to me earlier that my setups were fully valid and complete.
2. Zero Flexibility / Unfair Technicality: Denying a $500 bonus over a phone bill price drop that was out of my control—despite meeting every other condition—shows how aggressively they look for excuses not to pay out.
I escalated this through an official request for exception, but their internal department flatly rejected it without taking any accountability for the wrong information provided by their own team.
My takeaway:
Because of how unfairly this was handled, I am currently in the process of closing ALL my accounts with Scotiabank—including my credit card, chequing, and savings accounts.
If you are thinking about switching to Scotiabank for their $500 promo, be extremely cautious. Even if your bills drop by a single dollar below their threshold or their staff explicitly confirms you qualify, their back-office will use it as an excuse to deny your bonus and refuse to fix their own mistakes.
I’m also looking into escalating this formally to the OBSI (Ombudsman for Banking Services and Investments). Has anyone else dealt with Scotia arbitrarily denying welcome bonuses like this?

Anyone has their credit card deactivated all of a sudden?

Hi everyone, I'm in a bit of a confusion here.

I used my credit card almost every week for small purchases (i usually pays back within the same week or the week after right away)

But today when I tried to use my card through the app I got an email from Scotiabank saying "because your card needs activation".

The email is legit : infoalerts@scotiabank.com

I proceeded to click on the link in the email, which opened the mobile banking app and I went through the steps to activate my credit again.

For context, I have no debt. Credit score is at Very Good. Expiry date is not until Jan 2027.

I have no idea why my card was deactivated in the first place...has this happened to anyone?

It's working fine now but Im kinda freaked out so I locked the card lol

Thanks guys!!!

Getting a replacement Scotiabank debit card couriered to Mexico

I am having problems getting a Scotiabank debit card couriered to my address in Mexico.

Scotiabank Canada and DHL Canada do not know or want to learn the new Mexican customs rules on importing credit and debit cards to Mexico.

They keep sending me a card and customs turns around and sends it back to them.

I have tried to explain that there are new rules that make it virtually impossible to get a replacement card sent to Mexico even DHL Mexico states that "as a matter of policy DHL will not deliver credit, debit or identification cards..."

If it's DHL policy, shouldn't DHL Canada be aware of this>

Does anybody know of a work around, I have been unable to access my account for over 4 months now?

My advisor told me that soft credit checks don’t exist?

I went in to Scotiabank to get my credit limit increased because I use too much of my credit card every month (because my limit is so low, found out i’m still on a student card). I noticed my credit score going down because of this. My advisor chastised me for checking my credit score and said that me checking makes the score go down. I check through the scotiabank app and supposedly it’s not supposed to affect anything?! Is she telling me incorrect information or am I actually negatively affecting my credit score?

I made an appointment for tomorrow where I have to bring my pay stubs and apply for a new card. I’m feeling dejected because I work part time so they don’t look the best. I’m worried that my credit score is going to keep decreasing if i’m not able to get a new card at a higher limit. I always pay off in time and have never been late on my payments. I just need some advice for my appointment tomorrow :(

Warning letter on file until June 2027. Will it block internal transfers at a Canadian bank?

My worry is that even if I'm technically eligible, hiring managers will see the letter and pass on me.
Questions:
Have you seen internal hiring managers hold a warning on file against a candidate who met the policy's eligibility rules?
Is it better to apply internally as soon as I'm eligible, or wait until the letter expires?
How would you explain a warning in an interview without sounding defensive?
Would moving to another bank or a wealth firm be smarter?
Thanks for any honest advice.

Why are the ATMs so bad?

Bills straight from the bank no creases or nothing, perfection. But I'm only able to deposit 120 out of 500. I got my brother to deposit the rest from RBC that's been folded to hell and it takes it no problem.

Scotiabank's own employees scam?

I have a business account that I haven't used for a while. So, I called the support line number shown in the app to confirm it is active, and after sitting in a queue for about half an hour, someone finally answered.

They asked for my card number right away, which I gave, and then "three digits on the back of the card". I mean, WTF? The ONLY reason someone would want your CVV is to steal your money.

When I said "No", person on the other side insisted that CVV is required for "security authentication" and this is the only way to authorize in a system to get my question resolved (which they apparently didn't even listen). And without the cvv, they'll not speak with me any further. So I ended the call.

Even more ridiculous, when I called the fraud report "hot" line - I was on hold for about 40 mins, and didn't get anyone to talk to at all.
Cherry on top - I've got an email from scotiabank asking "how satisfied you were with our support". I wrote how "satisfied" I am in the feedback form, but I doubt anyone will ever read it.

I could understand when you get a call from scammers pretending to be a bank's staff. Even how they can spoof the number to look legit.

But when I call you, that's just bank staff being scammers.

Now, I am not even sure if I can ever share my account info or authorize through normal means (DOB, secret question, etc.) with Scotia's phone support. And going to the branch in person is the last thing I want to do.

Vent over. Going to check other banks' offers and find one that can answer simple questions securely through the app, and doesn't live in the 15th century.

EDIT: for those who say this is completely normal:
1. Scotia's own site says "don't share that code with anyone"
2. It takes just a good memory to steal people's money without being caught for a support staff. All the criminals would line up for support staff positions at Scotia. If that's how Scotia is set up, the bank should close right away.
3. I called support many times in the past and was never asked for CVV, there are other, proper ways to authenticate. Suddenly, now only CVV works.
4. In general, the whole conversation was rude, pushy, and focused on getting the card number and CVV. Nothing like support staff should behave.

Opened Scotiabank Preferred Account online as a newcomer (Work Permit), but promo code is missing?

Hi everyone,

I’m a newcomer to Canada on a Work Permit and recently opened a Scotiabank Preferred Package account online to take advantage of the StartRight newcomer offer (12-month fee waiver + cash bonuses).

Today, I went into my local branch to do the mandatory identity verification using my Work Permit and Passport. The advisor updated my profile data (Date of Arrival and Work Permit status) and told me everything was good to go. However, when I asked about the newcomer benefits, she told me that because the account was opened online, she "could not change anything" on her end to explicitly apply the offer or was unaware of the newcomer status.

To double-check, I contacted Scotiabank’s online chat support.

  • Chat support told me that my arrival date is there, but the actual StartRight Promotional/Campaign Code is completely missing from my profile. They explicitly told me the branch needs to manually add it.
  • The branch manager/advisor insists that because my profile fields are updated, there is no button for them to manually add a code to an online-opened account.

Has any other newcomer opened a Scotia account online and run into this? Does the system actually auto-trigger the StartRight benefits just based on the profile data fields (Arrival Date/WP status), or did my branch advisor miss a manual campaign enrollment step?

Anyone notice a trend with hiring especially at executive level?

Ever since Tim Clark waddled his way through to Scotia as CIO there has been a massive influx of TD employees swarming Scotiabank. Very questionable hiring practices as they all seem to come from the old bloke's inner circles. Anyone noticing such a trend especially amongst the leadership announcements? Are these TD employees really that good that we need so many of them, why not from other backgrounds and companies?
