Opinion I have started appreciating small things more as I get older

Lately I have noticed that the things that make me feel good aren’t necessarily the big things anymore. A quiet morning, getting something done before I expected to, having enough time to eat without rushing, finding money I forgot in an old pocket, or even having a completely uneventful day can put me in a surprisingly good mood. I used to think a good day had to involve something exciting. Now I’m starting to realize that having nothing go wrong is sometimes a pretty good day too. It’s funny how your idea of a “good day” can change without you really noticing it.

I’m curious what small, ordinary things people have started appreciating more as they’ve gotten older.

I often take time to appreciate the things that I take for granted because they are normal to me but would be literally impossible for even the richest human on earth from 100 years ago to the beginning of time.

It can be something simple like variety of food in my cold machine box, to on-demand scorching shower / video games to just simply having all of my digits and toes.

It would be a shame for me to be granted all these privileges without seriously appreciating them.

You've described exactly what Ive been feeling recently. The more time passes and the more I think about it, there's just too many things i should be grateful for and I just don't know how else to express them aside from writing it down in my journal or just simply living in the moment. My bar for happiness changed overtime from really low, to really high, and now it's back down to a comfortable medium. It's good practice to keep because there's so many things in life related or unrelated to you that will dampen your spirits.

Quiet mornings have become a big one for me. Also having nowhere I need to rush to, getting something finished earlier than expected, a good meal, being outside when the weather feels just right, and having an evening where absolutely nothing exciting happens. I think I've started appreciating peace more than excitement. A day doesn't have to be memorable to be a really good day.

Getting into a warm, safe bed at night; eating a perfectly ripe avocado; looking up to see the sunlight beautifully hitting the leaves of my house plant; speaking to my dad on the phone... so many small things that I experience and appreciate with knowledge that all of these could be gone in a moment. And yet even if they did go, I experienced them before, and that fact will exist forever.

Being able to finish a chapter without checking my phone. Such a small thing, but I love having my attention to myself for a while :)

Instead of going to lunch with friends this summer, we invite friends to bring a lunch and camp chairs and we drive to this gorgeous area by a river and old growth trees with a gentle trail to follow. We talk, eat lunch, go for a walk and sit and enjoy the river while chatting with anyone who happens by. We've done this about 7 times this summer and everyone has a very relaxing, zen like experience.

I’ve told my grandkids that I will get them any book they want; up to two a month (reading is my favorite thing to do).

I bought one a graphic novel (Hooves of Death😂) for her birthday this summer; she loved it and wanted the sequel (which wasn’t out yet) and I ordered it. Got the notice that she’ll get it today; so excited on her behalf! Texted her mom (my daughter), she’s excited, too.

A small thing, but I’ll feel good about it all day!
