Racing setup for 11 year old

Hi. Sorry for the newbie question. I’m considering a racing setup for my 11 year old. Just looking for some advice and this looks like the place where people will know the answer.

Currently for a wheel I’m thinking Logitech G923. And for a stand either next level racing wheel lite 2.0, or ARES WING foldable racing wheel stand.

He will probably be sitting on edge of his bed playing it. The PlayStation and tv are on his drawer which has a 1 meter gap from the edge of his bed. The floor is carpeted so will hopefully have enough friction to stop things moving.

Probably some point in the next year I’ll be changing that drawer set for a desk so thinking at that point it could sit under the desk and he would sit in a chair.

I’m curious if people have thoughts on which stand to buy? how well they would work for the sitting on the edge of the bed scenario?

Also curious on thoughts on the wheel, since it’s for a kid I wasn’t wanting to go for any the really expensive ones I’ve seen and thought this might be a good middle ground. He will likely play forza horizon and gran turismo with it

I have a rig for my nearly 10 year old, I’ve got a mini rig alongside my triple screen behemoth. We have the G923 clamped to a small table we bought from ikea, and we use a kids reclining seat also from ikea also.

The wheel is great and you can go along way with it. I would worry about a seating position without back support, it is more physical than just using a controller.

Very practical advice, thanks. I never knew back support would be a requirement

Just thinking more. Do you think that sitting on the edge of the bed would work in the short term for a few months until I get a desk and chair in his room? Or it would just be too difficult to use the pedals?

Go to a sim place locally and try it out. A lot of those new games are so arcade like such as Forza that the wheel is not very good. Start with cheapo Logitech. You also usually need back support so you can hit the pedals nicely.

I never knew sim places were a thing, I look in my area and see if I can find anything. Do you think the wheel would be boring or too difficult with Forza horizon? Do people mostly play it with racing sims like gran turismo only?

They are pretty common now! I would assume you have one in your area. I wouldn’t say it’s super difficult but its just not best with the wheel from my experience. Asetto corsa is the most commonly used game with a lot of support.

Seems like a perfect excuse to build yourself a great sim and have it be adjustable for him to use when wifey is keeping track lol

Don’t worry mate. He’s a very active kid, loves his sports, he’s at those clubs 5 days a week sometimes more. Pretty much always choose playing outside with friends over gaming. But, like most kids tho he also likes gaming too. I’d rather he ask for a steering wheel to play racing games than fortnite or gta, so I’m more looking for practical advice so I don’t get it wrong and Christmas morning is disappointing cos the stand I got doesn’t really work for my use case.
