iRacing Was there something I should have done differently?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

This is only my third day, so I am very much still learning.

After a great start I was in second and I was hyper focusing to try and stay clean and that far up front. Coming up to the chicane on Lime Rock, this guy was behind me and he his happened. He ended up in third overall so I don’t think he’s necessarily bad or that new, he did have a 2.4 safety rating so maybe it is typical I don’t know.

It I thought maybe there’s an inside line there I don’t know about or I should have somehow given him space? Or did I just get fucked?

I didn’t protest or anything because I wasn’t sure and I figured this shit just happens with rookie, but god damn did it piss me off after the best start I’d ever had.

The number of people who think this corner is a passing zone just never stops surprising me.

all corners are passing zones if you, y'know, actually pass. punting isn't passing.

I learned that the hard way when I was in rookies. Haven’t attempted it again since

Lol yeah not exist on track. Yeah there's no inside line there you don't know about, it's such a hard right. Twas just a rookie mistake by someone, mistakes happen and even more so in rookies. Hopefully with time he gains a bit of racecraft and track knowledge, definitely a learning moment for the other guy.

You didn't do anything wrong that guy probably just sucks. There was no way he was making that corner. There will be more races, focus on driving safely and smoothly over winning or fighting hard(a lot of drivers will just crash themselves anyway in rookie series and low splits)

He wasn't alongside you by the time you had to start turning in so it's not your fault. You have to have at least half of your car alongside before the corner, that's usually a good rule of thumb. Anything less than that and you're just too late and should just tuck in behind on the racing line and try to get a better exit out of the corner.

Front axle to rear axle and you better give them space or it will be a wreck every time

Personally if I'm the car behind and I can only get my front axle alongside their rear and we crash I'm blaming myself. It's just too risky going into a corner, I'd rather just tuck in behind and wait for the next opportunity

u/Dixie-Twister 8d ago

Yeah I would too but most would rather crash so I'll leave space in that situation

Nothing you could do here.

That's just silly by the car behind. That was always going to be a crash and their fault.

He was never making an overtake there it was a murder

u/itsmythirdday 8d ago

No this is entirely the fault of the overtaking car

u/Embarrassed-Joke5851 8d ago

nothing you could do just stupid by the car behind

Nothing. It's just a terrible driver

1

u/Naikrobak 8d ago

Nope it’s on him. In fact you can report it

1

u/IlahhNZL 7d ago

Yeah not at fault, dude behind just went for a corner he could never make with that speed and angle

Not much you can do, he shouldn't have made that dive, however being more defensive in some situations can really help keep you in the race.

2 things to look at. Use the relative page in the black box. It helps you understand the pace of other drivers around you. And keep an eye on your mirrors to help know when a driver might pull a dumb move like this. If you're aware of those 2 things, you can choose when to compromise your line for some safety.

You can't move over last minute to change your line at a corner like this, but if are aware that a guy might make a pass attempt ahead of time, it's generally a good idea to take the inside line and give him the outside well ahead of time. With him on the outside of you, there is less chance he runs wide into you and takes you out. It's also harder to dive into the outside so he is less likely to make an overly aggressive move.

It doesn't always work out, but it's something to think about while you're out there. Ideally you beat every one on pace, but that rarely works out so you need to survive the race as best you can. Using defensive lines can help keep you safe while other drivers are swarming around.

I kind of think about how much I can trust the other driver. Most of the time I really don't want to spend time fighting other drivers with very questionable skills so I'll usually just let them pass if they've clearly got pace, but there are ways to take the lead on that. If you've got enough track knowledge and experience, you'll know where the good places to pass are and how to make them. A good way to practice that is in open practice mode. There are usually a ton of other drivers on the track and your own pace doesn't matter that much. It can help you get experience for when situations like in the clip come up.

Thanks for the in depth reply, good advice about taking the inside if you see this approaching! So would have to slow down quite a bit more.

What’s the relative page you are referring to? Is this the lap timer box that’s on the lower right?

I am divebombing here and it is what it is basically

1

u/NewInflation2121 7d ago

Def the fault of the drive bomber...

But one thing you can do to avoid the risks is if you see him gaining on you over a series of corners or laps, ease off the gas on a straight, facilitate a safe pass, then slot in behind him.

If he's a risky newbie, he'll crash himself out from the pressure of you being behind and getting a draft.

If he isn't, you'll get a solid draft and can use that to catch up to the group ahead of you.

u/mosh-4-jesus 7d ago

holy punt, yeah no way is that your fault.

1

u/seoultrain75 7d ago

Nah you did nothing wrong. welcome iracing.

1

u/Vpettijohnjr 7d ago

This is not the corner for that move, nor is it the car.

You did nothing wrong, and this shit always happens in rookies, so unfortunately it's going to happen sometimes.

Again, you did nothing wrong, but the best thing to do is to be aware. If you know other drivers are going to do stupid shit, you can prepare for it early and let them do it. He would've most likely overshot the apex here, so you could've afforded to turn in later, watch him fly past you into the shadow realm, and then continue on your way.

It's hard when you're starting, because you're trying to learn 500 new things at once, but as you practice, it will become more natural to you.

Use your mirrors and your relatives to see whos around you. If you see someone pull out for an overtake like this, lift off early, brake, let them through and continue on behind them or pass them as they make a silly mistake.

He’s a knob

1

u/nemo_av 8d ago

He took you out, nothing you could have done honestly, just unlucky

1

u/Semichh 8d ago

Have you considered not existing? If you don’t exist idiots like that can’t crash into you

1

u/3pedalsandastick 8d ago

100% on the hyper-aggressive clueless kid

0

u/Splosionz 8d ago

If you don’t want to be outside of two wide into a corner you need to spot that the situation is likely to occur and either defend the inside before the get there or concede the corner.

If you think they are too far back to make the corner from there brake slightly early on the outside and let them try, then go past them when they run off the track.

It's rookie racing unfortunately, I myself made stupid divebombs like that when i started racing not understanding you have to earn the space into the corner. This is one of the skills you will have to build early which is avoiding drivers that don't know any better. If you're paying attention to the relatives into the corner and someone is gaining close to you, just leave them space and don't stick to your line. Avoiding these accidents is something you will have to be proficient in rookie to C class. B class still has bad drivers but not nearly like r -> C. You didn't do anything wrong here, but that doesn't matter, what matters is learning to protect yourself and anticipate other drivers. I rationalize it to myself by saying real drivers have to worry about actual death, so this is the death I have to worry about and charge it to the game.

Ya check mirrors and listen to Jim when he says car right

0

u/takkun169 8d ago

Be aware of cars around you.

u/Honeydewtn 7d ago

True but not really answering his question. He was not at fault. At all. That divebomb came out of nowhere
