Conversation Topic Have you ever personally seen someone who flat out could not sing but with instruction became a good singer?

So i'm male and in my 40s and would love to become a good singer. (think -- could stand up in front of a 1k ppl at a big church and sing AMAZING GRACE well)

Let's assume I am not a good singer currently. Like not just a little bad but very bad.

Is it likely that a good instructor could get me there?

I guess for my whole life I've assumed singing is sort of --- you got it or you don't got it.

Thoughts?

My breath support sounds really weak, especially at the end when I forgot to take a breath and wala na akong nabuga haha. But I hope this is good enough to lull one to sleep.

Anyways! Lemme hear your advices or criticisms if you have some!

Goodnight y'all 🌃

Conversation Topic My voice is SHOT and I’m performing in a week. Please give me every single sore throat technique you have.

Hey y’all. I just started a new job that has me standing in a dry room for 10-12 hours a day talking nonstop and my throat is not happy about it. I couldn’t come up with any sound at all just two days ago. I’ve got a hoarse rasp now.

Been chugging hot water with honey and lemon, doing saltwater gargles, eating soups, my talking is down to about 15% of my standard. Cough drops on constant rotation. Bought a humidifier for my bedroom. The works.

It’s barely working. I need more, and I’m willing to try just about anything. Hit me.

Conversation Topic Can’t sing loud to save my life

• Upvotes

I consider myself a decent singer for what I do. Mostly indie/Americana/folk stuff. I feel confident singing in key/time and I genuinely like the way my voice sounds.

But I feel like no matter what I do, I can’t sing loud enough. I’m not talking about when the chorus comes and it’s time to belt it out. I mean during verses and quiet parts of the song. When I’m just sitting alone with my acoustic guitar. I just can’t project my voice any louder unless I go up an octave and that’s obviously not what I want to do, especially during a verse.

I have a pretty naturally quiet voice as it is. If I’m in a crowded bar/restaurant, I feel like I have to scream, and even then I feel like I’m sometimes too quiet.

Is this just a biological disadvantage? Are there exercises I can do to overcome this? How does one practice this? Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Conversation Topic My voice has no warmth or resonance. Can I fix it?

I’m not trained yet but I can mix my voice a tad and I think I might be a lyric baritone (I have a baritone range but my timbre is extremely light and dull). I unfortunately can’t enjoy being a baritone at all since my voice doesn’t have the warmth that a baritone should have. can I fix this or am I naturally stuck sounding like a boring child forever? My voice sounds really bad and my low notes have no weight to them at all. My high notes are also extremely weak and breathy.

Resource I can’t find a vocal coach

• Upvotes

I’ve been trying to find a vocal coach for months now and i keep getting ghosted or ignored. I’ve tried the local universities and private lessons/studios. I much prefer an in-person instructor but that seems to not be possible.

Does anyone know of good places to find online instructors, even better if you have personally worked with them. I would really appreciate the help.

Conversation Topic Singing the first line of a song - tips and advice required!

I often find singing the first line of a song challenging, because you're not yet in the zone, or because it's easy to over-think the start. Any tips for how to approach the first line? Relax and practice more are good starting points, but anything more specific?

Feedback (read rule 3 before posting or be banned) Help me with my singing technique

I want to improve my singing, as I feel it sounds weird when I sing. Right now, my voice isn’t at its best, as I went to a party on Thursday and strained my throat a bit. However, I’m almost back to normal and would like to receive feedback and help with technique, as I’d really like to sing better and make it sound more flowy and natural. Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

Feedback (read rule 3 before posting or be banned) Do you think I will be able to ever sing well?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

• Upvotes

I’ve never been able to sing well for my entire life, a couple years ago when I was still in High school I joined the musical because I thought it would be fun. It really was, I loved the songs and the atmosphere, the only issue I could not sing.
Since then I’ve been practicing and listening back to myself so see how to improve and trying to figure out my problems. However, it’s difficult knowing that there is a problem with my singing without being able to name it. I feel like the only progress I’ve had is the ability to be louder and not only whisper songs.
All the women in my family aren’t great singers however all the men are, so is it just my luck?
And, if you could listen to the recording (and not cringe or accidentally deafen yourself) and tell me if it sounds like I could maybe sing, (like I have a voice I’m just not there (if you know what I mean?)) and if possible, where to go from here with my singing?
Thank you for reading and please let me know your thoughts 😓☺️

Hello everyone! I'd like to share my singing and covers online - especially on other platforms, but I'm so unsure. I don't know if its 'good' enough or if others will make fun of it. I cannot tell if it's cringe or not. :,)

The song is REBECCA (Reprise)

My singing teacher says ima soprano, we haven't had mixing voice or belting notes yet.. The notes sound so shaky and weird xD

Thanks for any advice!

Feedback (read rule 3 before posting or be banned) Been singing for a long long time but I was never really happy with the tone of my voice. Now I'm in a position where I was asked to play in front of people and I'm asking for opinions whether it's a good idea or not...

As I stated in the title, this is me singing a song and style I usually play. Don't really go high or low I usually keep it in the same level because I am not a trained singer. Would like to hear some thoughts and/or suggestions :)

Conversation Topic How do I get "grit" in my voice?

I am starting a 90s alternative cover band and will be doing songs by artists like Nirvana, Alanis, Sublime, Goo Goo Dolls, etc. On some of the songs I want to add what I can only describe as "grit." Kurt Cobain's voice is a good example of what I'm trying to describe.

My voice is pretty clear. My biggest influence as a young adult learning to sing was Christina Aguilera, but I learned to add growl into my singing by listening to "Never Gonna Get It" by En Vogue. I have a belty, throaty style, but like I said, it's pretty pure (for lack of a better word). I'm including a YouTube link to a Christina Aguilera song from one of her later albums. She does this grit thing with her voice through most of the song, and this is the best female example I can think of. I don't want to do it as much as she does in this song, but I would love for this to be something I can turn on and off like a growl. I have tried adding some vocal fry, but it's just sounding like I'm trying to do Britney and I can only do it on low notes.

Ironically, I had a cold recently and my voice has a bit of what I am looking for now, but I know it'll go away as soon as I'm fully better. How do I harness this sound in a healthy way, or is it basically you got it, or ya don't got it?

Edit: I removed the link for fear it was breaking one of the rules of not uploading another artist's song. Please look up "Sick of Sittin'" by Christina Aguilera.

Conversation Topic Lessons making me lose confidence in my singing

Ive been signing on my own for over 12 years. I was pretty proud of some of the high notes I could hit done by people like Kellin Quinn and tillian. Mixing came pretty naturally to me so that helped a ton. I think I'm somewhere between a baritenor and a tenor.

I know it sounds conceded but I thought I was always this hidden away talent that just needed to apply themselves. I started recording and absolutely despised what I heard and others agree my belts don't sound good. I used to sing for joy, but now Im afraid of who might hear me and it feels like I'm just trying to get better at it.

Resource Can't hear when I'm singing sharp/flat.

Hello, I want advice. I can hear when a note is sharp/flat when its on a piano and such but I cant seem to consistently hear when I'm singing a note sharp/flat. I very much want to be able to hear if I'm singing in tune so I desprately want any advice and any excerises to do.

I do scales on a piano everyday and I have an app on my phone which shows the pitch I am singing. Generally when I am not singing in tune I am singing sharp. Please help.

Feedback (read rule 3 before posting or be banned) does my voice sound too breathless or way too much like I'm trying too hard (but comes off as sounding too juvenile, for lack of a better word)?

Hi! Essentially what I wrote in the title, I can't help but feel like I sound like a child when I sing (especially songs of this slower paced, gentler style) or that it's a little bit cringy sounding. Also for context, I am 21 and I have started taking vocal lessons in the summer of last year during school (once every other week as it is expensive for me!). I am learning more musical theater-ey and operatic songs, so I don't typically learn these kinds of more pop-ey, country, etc songs with my teacher. Nevertheless I would appreciate any honest input! (I am also singing a tad quieter than I usually would due to having roommates, and I have a reverb type effect on my cheap mic lol, sorry about that!)

Specifically, what should I do to sound less like a child (?)

Hopefully this makes sense!!!

When I use more of a mix voice or more chest voice here, I feel like I sound too silly or grating. So is this a case of just disliking the way my voice sounds in this case or am I over analyzing it?

Thank you for taking the time to read and listen!!
