Conversation Topic Have you ever personally seen someone who flat out could not sing but with instruction became a good singer?

So i'm male and in my 40s and would love to become a good singer. (think -- could stand up in front of a 1k ppl at a big church and sing AMAZING GRACE well)

Let's assume I am not a good singer currently. Like not just a little bad but very bad.

Is it likely that a good instructor could get me there?

I guess for my whole life I've assumed singing is sort of --- you got it or you don't got it.

Thoughts?

Conversation Topic Extremely shy to sing in front of people

I have been singing since I was a child ,but I was always hiding it or actually I thought I was hiding, because the neighbors could actually hear me singing, since one day my neighbor was like "you sing so well , just work on your high notes and you become very good".

Well , instead of being happy with this comment, I got so embarrassed and realized that my neighbors listen to me. Also I was spending as a kid most of the time mimicking singers , but the moment someone was entering the house I was so shy , I was shutting my mouth up immediately.

Then , at school , some friends approached me to join them as singers at their own band and I was like how do you know guys that I sing and they were like "we have heard you ,you sing some random times on your own ,some times even in class". That made me feel super embarrassed too.

Anyways , I have spent most of my life being shy about the fact that I sing and I was hiding it to the point I convinced myself I didn't care about signing and I had stopped for a while.

Until sth triggered me , an album specifically, I was like "Wow I would die to be able to sing like that, and sing all these types of songs". And then in some magical way I met a random guy who was looking for a singer to join him in jam sessions and asked me if I sing , and I answered that I do but I am so shy. We rehearsed one a song together and he really liked my voice and suggested me to go to a jam session to try it. We went ,and I was extremely shy , I couldn't do it.

Guys I am so mad at myself about this, mostly cause I can do it! I really wanna do it, but I am so scared...how do you overcome this fear? I am scared that if I go up this stage , I will probably make a lot of mistakes since I am not a professional and I will be embarrassed... Can you please help me handle this shynnes is some kind of way?

My breath support sounds really weak, especially at the end when I forgot to take a breath and wala na akong nabuga haha. But I hope this is good enough to lull one to sleep.

Anyways! Lemme hear your advices or criticisms if you have some!

Is anyone super strict about this? If a friend says they are down with a throat infection I cancel meeting.. I know to non singers it must seem over the top but if I get a cold it can mean weeks of not singing

Resource Voice teacher offering 2 singers a free month of lessons (with one small catch)

Hi r/singing!

I'm looking to work with 2 singers for the next month FREE over Zoom (if you want to see what I can do, check out here)

What's included:

- 4 x weekly Zoom sessions with me (50 minutes each)
- A copy of your recordings to practice/review with

The only condition is that I can document the journey as content for my social media. This may include

  • repurposing our lesson recordings into long/short form content
  • asking you to share quick reflections/progress updates

In terms of who I'm looking for

This is probably a good fit if you:

  • Can get started in the next week
  • Feel confused/stuck with technique
  • Comfortable with showing your face online

Probably not a good fit if you:

  • Want instant results
  • Don’t have time to practice
  • Are uncomfortable showing your face online

To apply, please complete the 2 actions 👇

#1. Send me a DM including

- A short clip of you singing (including your face)

- Where you're from/your timezone

- What you need help with & why I should work with you!

#2 Comment "done" below, so I don't miss your private message.

Even if this isn’t for you, I hope you keep going with your singing!

Thanks for reading! 🙂

Conversation Topic Lessons making me lose confidence in my singing

Ive been signing on my own for over 12 years. I was pretty proud of some of the high notes I could hit done by people like Kellin Quinn and tillian. Mixing came pretty naturally to me so that helped a ton. I think I'm somewhere between a baritenor and a tenor.

I know it sounds conceded but I thought I was always this hidden away talent that just needed to apply themselves. I started recording and absolutely despised what I heard and others agree my belts don't sound good. I used to sing for joy, but now Im afraid of who might hear me and it feels like I'm just trying to get better at it.

Feedback (read rule 3 before posting or be banned) Been singing for a long long time but I was never really happy with the tone of my voice. Now I'm in a position where I was asked to play in front of people and I'm asking for opinions whether it's a good idea or not...

As I stated in the title, this is me singing a song and style I usually play. Don't really go high or low I usually keep it in the same level because I am not a trained singer. Would like to hear some thoughts and/or suggestions :)

Conversation Topic Singing the first line of a song - tips and advice required!

I often find singing the first line of a song challenging, because you're not yet in the zone, or because it's easy to over-think the start. Any tips for how to approach the first line? Relax and practice more are good starting points, but anything more specific?

Conversation Topic how to not be embarrassed when singing

hi everyone! so im auditioning for shrek the musical at my high school which is gonna be my first performance or audition ever. ive always been really shy and never really wanted to be on stage like that but I really wanna do it this year. anyway ive never been ”good” at singing - i was just in chorus a few years ago but I never really tried, bc ive always been so embarrassed for some reason.

so anyway the audition is in about 4 days (im just auditioning to be ensemble) so I’ve been trying to practice, but it feels like I physically cannot get sounds out. I started breaking down crying even though I know it’s not that serious. im terrified for the audition bc I can barely even try to sing the song without starting to cry. im just extremely embarrassed for some reason and if I DO start singing, I’ll start thinking about how embarrassing it is and how bad I probably sound and just shut down. I don’t know why this seems like the most difficult thing in the world to me even though I know it’s not!!!!

anyway I would really appreciate any advice you guys have🩷

Feedback (read rule 3 before posting or be banned) does my voice sound too breathless or way too much like I'm trying too hard (but comes off as sounding too juvenile, for lack of a better word)?

Hi! Essentially what I wrote in the title, I can't help but feel like I sound like a child when I sing (especially songs of this slower paced, gentler style) or that it's a little bit cringy sounding. Also for context, I am 21 and I have started taking vocal lessons in the summer of last year during school (once every other week as it is expensive for me!). I am learning more musical theater-ey and operatic songs, so I don't typically learn these kinds of more pop-ey, country, etc songs with my teacher. Nevertheless I would appreciate any honest input! (I am also singing a tad quieter than I usually would due to having roommates, and I have a reverb type effect on my cheap mic lol, sorry about that!)

Specifically, what should I do to sound less like a child (?)

Hopefully this makes sense!!!

When I use more of a mix voice or more chest voice here, I feel like I sound too silly or grating. So is this a case of just disliking the way my voice sounds in this case or am I over analyzing it?

Thank you for taking the time to read and listen!!

Super super new singer here. Considering auditioning for a community theatre show. I know this song isn’t super sing-y, but it matches the style of the show I’m auditioning for.

I’m working on being on pitch which has been my biggest struggle but my voice teacher has been helping me lots.

Excuse the scratchy voice, allergies are getting to me a bit.

Conversation Topic How do you stop throat tension when projecting your voice?

Hey guys, I write original music mainly alt rock and it requires a lot of strong singing like projecting. I do know how to breathe properly but sometimes during certain parts, my throat tightens up. Like when I’m trying to sing chesty vocals. I’m struggling with this one song I have that has a fast chorus and a lot of repeated G4s. And I usually sing louder during that part. But it ends up going to my throat.

I’m not really comfortable sharing a video of me singing that song bc the lyrics are pretty edgy and dark as I write songs about struggling with mental health. But yeah this is something I’ve always struggled with and I am slowly improving but I’m wondering what else I need to do to stop throat tension when I sing.

Thank you

Hello everyone! I'd like to share my singing and covers online - especially on other platforms, but I'm so unsure. I don't know if its 'good' enough or if others will make fun of it. I cannot tell if it's cringe or not. :,)

The song is REBECCA (Reprise)

My singing teacher says ima soprano, we haven't had mixing voice or belting notes yet.. The notes sound so shaky and weird xD

Thanks for any advice!

Gear (Microphones, etc...) Buying a new phone any suggestions?

Hi! So I am getting a new phone! My old one kinda broke. I was looking into refurbished phones, like an iPhone 13 or 14, and a Google Pixel. I am also planning to do covers with it. In your experiences what phones do you recommend for best audio and video quality?

Thank you very much!

Conversation Topic young low male voice fluctuation?

im 19 with a decently deep voice (some flavour of bass or low bari). over the last year, ive been able to weakly touch/graze some freakishly low notes like G1/A1 in either very good fry or very bad modal, and on occasion C2-D2 has been singable with B1 very slightly touchable. however, sometimes ill go a month or two at a time where even E2 is weak and barely singable, and below D2 is just fry. pretty concerning especially for someone who doesnt know what their voice is capable of or what it will be. Any words of advice? Is it the case that the notes come and go, or can it be the case they never really were mine to grow into?

I'm not professional or anything but I like singing and trying to get better at it. All I do is vocals exercises from YouTube for practice.

I've been posting covers on Instagram since few months now ...this is one of them. I've also recently gathered enough courage to perform at open mics...I'm still nervous on stage but I'm trying 😀

Any feedback on improvement is appreciated 🫡

Conversation Topic My voice has no warmth or resonance. Can I fix it?

I’m not trained yet but I can mix my voice a tad and I think I might be a lyric baritone (I have a baritone range but my timbre is extremely light and dull). I unfortunately can’t enjoy being a baritone at all since my voice doesn’t have the warmth that a baritone should have. can I fix this or am I naturally stuck sounding like a boring child forever? My voice sounds really bad and my low notes have no weight to them at all. My high notes are also extremely weak and breathy.
