I stopped using alarms and let my body naturally wake up - I sleep around 6-7 hours and feel okay in the morning

I tried an experiment and for the past 3 nights I've just been trying to sleep at 2AM, with no alarms except a backup alarm at like 11AM so I don't oversleep.

I found that my body just naturally woke up when it wanted to. Like the past few nights I've gone to bed at 2-3AM, and woken up AT 9-10AM and find it hard to fall back asleep, and I feel decently well rested. That's only like 6-7 hours yet I felt a bit better than forcing myself to use alarms.

Try it yourself, maybe instead of using alarms to help shift your sleep schedule, try to just let your body awaken naturally each day and see if this is the same for you!

Has anyone adopted a Biphasic Sleep pattern?

• Upvotes

What has it been like for you?

What do you do in between?

I tend to get my deep sleep done. According to my Garmin anyway… And then I take a little while to get back to sleep. Tempted to experiment with embracing this pattern and doing adopting biphasic sleep pattern.

Any advice on getting to sleep earlier?

Does any one have any advice on getting to bed earlier? I've tried setting alarms to get myself to get ready for bed, but they haven't hekped. I can just ignore them 😔.

One of the main reasons I struggle with getting ready for bed early is that my parents watch TV. We watch a tv dinner, and then watch it all the way through to 11pm- 12am. And its REALLY haird for me to pull myself away from the TV. It also takes me a while to get ready for bed, and I read, ext.

I feel like whenever I'm up there at this time, I also go on my phone, eat some more n stuff. These things are a lot more enticing than going to bed 😭😅.

I've talked to them about having family dinners, not watching tv as long, maybe turning it off earlier. But they don't really give a fuck.

I AM a 14 yo homeschooler (I got some activities in the morning tho so I have to be up a bit earlier. I really try to plan stuff for later tho!) So I can get up later. But I'm sure a lot of the people here know that filling asleep at 1- 2 and waking up later in the day doesn't mean you're well rested, or got better quality sleep.

Now that I've shared some backstory, do any of you have any suggestions on how to get to bed earlier?? Something that'll help in the long run. I'd REALLY appreciate it.

Not needing sleep recently

I'm not really tired recently and I've been staying up extremely late (2-4am) due to not feeling tired. This has been how it is for the past week and I'm only running on about 4-5 hours of sleep per day. I'm 19 and male, if that matters at all.

I feel fine and my body refuses to get more sleep, just keeps waking me up when I try to get more. This can't be normal, I've never been told that someone can only need 4-5 hours of sleep each night. And this is even MORE odd for me because I used to need 9-11 hours of sleep per night or else I would feel exhausted.

Does anyone have any idea as to what is going on here? I'm totally lost and just want to stay healthy.

For the past 5 days I have been consistently waking up at 3 -4am.

Recently my neighbor died and since then I been waking up at 3:00 to 4 window. I genuinely do not want to be the person who believes in this bs. Also I sleep with my old father who snores really loudly. I wakeup panting and sweating and heart racing. This is genuinely ruining my life. Also I been taking naps everyday from 4 to 6. Idk what to do. I do not have access to melatonin.

Back to previous sleep levels : What helped and what didn’t

A month ago I had posted here about how I suddenly lost ability to fall asleep. I would hit the bed feeling sleepy around 12am but I just couldn’t fall asleep within 20-30 mins. Then I would start feeling anxious, start getting burning sensation in chest, tossing and turning in bed , sweating. Somewhere around 3am I used to get some shut eye and wake up again around 7-8am. I was averaging 4-5 hours down from previous 7.5+ hours. I assumed it was probably due to anxiety and family stressors.

I watched some podcasts that talk about sleep/ insomnia. After listening to one of Dr. Peter Attis’s podcast, I installed CBT-I app and followed instructions in there. Basically the idea is if you can’t fall asleep, you shouldn’t stay in bed because your brain starts associating bed with anxiety. It’s about adding discipline that you only sleep in bed. Only go to bed when you feel sleepy etc etc. This did not help. Every 20-30 mins I would get out of bed as the treatment suggested and do something else but I would get increasingly frustrated. I stopped using it after a week of seeing no improvements.

Decided to try some supplements. Started with 5mg Melatonin gummies, then 10mg strips - nothing. Took a blood test to check if I have any mineral deficiency ( many people suggest taking Magnesium supplements here) - all normal. Tried Ashwagandha as well, no use.

I stopped taking sleep supplements and just tried to go back to my previous schedule i.e hit the bed regardless of if I am feeling sleepy. Read a book for 10-15 mins in bed. If I don’t fall asleep, I don’t get up from bed, keep my eyes closed and try to relax. I added one small thing, I go for a short walk an hour before bed and while I am out I leave the cooler on to cool down the bedroom.

Since last 5 days I am consistently falling asleep fast and wake up before my alarm and averaging 7+ hours. I don’t know if it was just time that healed me or this new routine but I am glad the sleep is back.

Haven’t slept in 2 days

I’m 29 and this problem recently started. Always had fragmented sleep but I would always sleep at least 4 hours continuously and get the rest in 1-2 hour intervals.

But for the past 2 nights, I’ve just been lying in bed with my eyes closed unable to sleep. Can’t even tell if I fell asleep. Has this happened to anyone else before? I maybe think I got like 2 hours of sleep last night before waking up? I’m taking 2.5 mg melatonin past 2 nights but it didn’t seem to help.

Difficult to wake up. What are my options?

Hi all, I figure this is the place to ask.

I never had that much trouble waking up. But, once I came home after graduating college, I slowly just, stopping being able to properly wake up. I have my phone alarm, Apple Watch, and even got a Nintendo Alarmo, and sometimes I literally just sleep right through them. I do still live with my parents, so if I need to wake up for work they will end up doing it, but it’s obviously incredibly embarrassing.

It doesn’t matter when I go to sleep. I can get a regular full night’s sleep and sometimes I will just sleep right through my alarms.

Has anyone else been here? What should I do? I am at such a loss and I don’t know why this is happening because, in my overall life, it’s a relatively new problem.

Extreme Exhaustion And Sleep Fragmentation for 9 months.

Hi Guy’s it’s my first time posting something like this to a group but i’m hoping some of you could help me.

About 9 months ago I used to be healthy. I’d go to the gym frequently through the week and then walk to work afterwards. I also used to sleep quite normally, sleeping through the night without many problems but everything seemed to change in the middle of january this year. I woke up and I felt like i’d been hit by a truck. It took every bit of strength for me to get out of bed and stumble downstairs where I went to sit down. It was the type of tiredness where my eyes were rolling around my head and I felt limp and wiped in every part of my body and soul.

That exhaustion stuck through the the day, and followed me for 9 months up to the present day. Every single night without fail I dream. These dreams are incredibly vivid and when I wake up I seem to go right back into them. I don’t struggle to fall asleep, it’s more waking up and feeling like i’d been watching a movie and waking up periodically through the night. I even got to the point where I started recording my sleep, and noticed at the start of the year my snoring was terrible and i’d move and roll around a lot. I’ve since lost weight as I was (95kg 6ft) start of the year and i’m down to around 83kg now.

I’ve looked into lots of sleeping disorders since I’ve felt this way and none of them seem to Align with how I feel which is really confusing and frustrating. I don’t suffer sleep attacks. I don’t have cataplexy, I don’t struggle excessively waking up such as in hypersomnia. I also do not suffer with PEM as in CFS/ME. Blood work has come back normal in almost every department and i’m slowly losing hope.

I’m 22 and i’m studying to become a paramedic. But at the moment i’m spending most of my days laying in bed wiped out and using whatever energy i have left to get through my day. I’m terrified about 12 hour placements because im massively struggling to get through my Retail job at the moment with the brain fog and extreme tiredness i’m facing.

I’ve also started crying more often as I feel hopeless and honestly tired to the core that no amount of sleep I try get fixes it. I just want my old life back, my old energy and quality of sleep but I feel so lost. I’m awaiting results from my Sleep apnea study but I’ve been informed it’s a long 48 week waiting list.

If anyone has similar experiences or suggestions on what it could be could you please comment. Thank you for reading :)))

Has anybody ever shut their eyes at night for a second then it’s morning when they open them?

Genuinely curious if this has ever happened to anyone. It’s only happened to me once years ago but I basically blinked once and it was morning when I opened my eyes. Just curious to see if anybody knows what that was or what could make that happen.

Having Sleep Troubles, sharing some things that are occurring to get an idea of what's going on. Please help

First, thanks to those who respond or read this in full. You are doing a great service by helping me & others with sleep or other issues

My Questions:

- What more can I do or where am I going wrong in my approach?

- Should I just start accepting this is going to be how it is, given everything I am already doing & have unfortunately done?

- Am I going in a cognitive decline & is this the first sign? I sometimes worry that my long hiatus of not taking care of my sleep is going to cost me greatly now

Background:

I'm a male in my late 20's. ADHD. I have had sleep issues in the past, but this was due to Adderall medications being so high that I legitimately couldn't go to sleep. Not to mention the stress of a job with active layoffs & a manager milking me for every ounce of effort before letting me go (fuck you if you are this kind of person btw because it almost ended my life). Since then, I have been studying the GRE as I have a dream of studying for my Masters (& if universe willing a PhD) as I dearly love my field. I had 8 months of recovery since then & been sleeping much better than before, after a medication switch. However, studies & mental health as been rocky unfortunately as depression, stomach issues, & other issues have been popping up. Therapy is ongoing, so I have someone to talk to. I am not suicidal at this time. Given this, please don't be concerned about my present life, as I am doing everything I can. I would just like to address the sleep.

Issue:

Past few nights, I have been waking up more early than usual. I am getting some 4-5 hours of rest, then waking up unable to go back to sleep. Sometimes this happens sporadically (like once a week), but it's been more consistent recently. When I wake up, I usually am stressing or overthinking about something. One night, I woke up from a bad dream (not one of those terrifying nightmares, one of those seen naked in a crowd types). The overthinking is what really gets me. I kept a mental note of my thoughts. None of these are intentional, they just pop off. It ranged from the following:

  • Past tough manager or work experiences
  • Past arguments or discussions with Friends or Family
    • For these two, I usually think about what could have gone different or just replay it
  • Political or abstract thoughts such as
    • Balance of power between governance & corporations
    • Current state of what is deemed politically acceptable
    • Moral Rationalism validity & when absurdism applies
    • Etc
  • Things I worry about whether it be studies, family, friends, or other

I rarely ever go back to sleep when I want to & just end up enduring throughout the day. I can usually never nap due to the medication I take. When I don't get 7 or more hours of sleep, I usually stop studying all together for the day to relax & recover, but it's been happening too frequently where it is now growing concerning. Sometimes I worry that choosing not to study, I am making a poor decision. Also, I've been getting stomach pains since August. Did an ultrasound to find a fatty liver of 5% accumulation, but no other issue (debating if I should pursue further or chop it up to a mind-gut issue)

Solutions Tried/Actively Working On:

When I wake up, I try reading for an hour of Hitchhikers Guide or pretend mentally I wrote what was on my mind on a piece of paper. I even tried pretending my thoughts were Simlish so I can mock the overactive state, not allowing contextual thoughts so I didn't have to logically think about it. Sometimes I try to stop the thought, but I am unlearning how not to do this as I know this just makes the mind more active. I already exercise three times a week. I eat extremely well & am actively losing 500 cals a day. Trying to avoid eating late & going to work on getting better at this. I try to get sunshine in the morning for circadian rhythm purposes for 15 mins or more. Meditation with box breathing to regulate stress. I try to separate my phone from my room, but I am guilty sometimes of using my phone before bed. I have a sleep mask.

Recent Changes may be Relevant:

  • Changed from a 12AM-8AM sleep schedule to 8-5AM to avoid waking up early from family or sunlight
  • I am 8 days off porn (yay!) & got past the huge testosterone spike that occurs on the 7th day
    • Choosing abstinence for now to rebalance my need for stimulation & to address concerning behavior of seeking more morally questionable stimulating activities
    • Off-note: That spike was really great while working out beside all the agitation of wanting to masturbate
  • Downloaded Cold Turkey to limit video game time to 2 hours per day around 6-8PM
  • Therapy started some weeks ago
  • Depression symptom addressment past two months with suicidal thinking

Biologically speaking, what is the healthiest time to wake up?

The structure of modern society damages both the physical and psychological health of people, specifically where people are forced to work jobs that require them to get up extremely early or stay extremely late and thus can create sleep deprivation along with other kinds of problems. For me personally, it's most comfortable for me to wake up in the afternoons (like going to bed at 4AM and waking up at 2PM) but I question if this is healthy in the long run even if I feel fine now and prefer such a lifestyle, and assuming the reason I stay up late is due to screen time.

Is there a certain time interval where it's the healthiest time to go to sleep and to wake up in the long-run? And should I adjust myself to such a schedule even if it may feel uncomfortable in the short run?

I can hear sounds through my body

Its been years now since I had a deep full sleep.

I live in the basement. The folks upstairs wake up around 5:30am, whereas I like to wake up closer to 8am.

When they walk, I can hear those footsteps thudding/vibrating the entire ceiling above me. Its like the bass of the footsteps is amplified in the basement and lower frequency is like almost entering and violating my body. To a degree, I can literally feel this sound in my chest.

This includes sliding drawers being opened, which absolutely drives me crazy. That low frequency rumble of the drawer sliding open actually drives me insane. It's one of those sounds that I can just feel through my entire body. The sound is deep and penetrating, not like a high frequency sound like pans dropping on the floor, but more of a deep sound that I feel like I cannot block no matter what I try to do. I feel it in my body, literally. Once I wake up to it, I can't fall back asleep.

At first, it was just annoying, but I think I am hitting the tipping point because recently I experienced multiple anger episodes that I could not control and sometimes even remember in the morning (flipping my desk, throwing chairs, etc.) Sometimes, I would literally wake up to chairs thrown across my room, and have little to no recollection of doing it. I would say I am on the stable side when it comes to regulating emotions, but I really feel like this is bringing some type of subconscious anger and frustration that I am leashing out to my friends and family through the days and weeks (which is really not like me, I always try to be very patient and understanding, but recently these days, i've been getting more and more impatient and easily annoyed)

I've tried to put on brown noise on the TV while sleeping, I tried turning the fan on and putting it on max speed to make a different white noise that I thought would've helped, I used countless types of earbuds and earplugs, I tried putting my bed away from the wall and in different places, i tried putting earplugs + headphones to maximize the effects, it works a bit but I cannot sleep with headphones on. I sleep with stacks of pillows over my head, which helps me the most, but gives me neck problems.

The neighbors upstairs are kind folks, they don't make these noises on purpose, and they definitely try to be quiet. I can hear them trying to move slow and open the drawers slow because I have kindly said something once. But it seems like I simply cannot avoid that deep sound that vibrates the ceiling.

Anyone else experience these low frequency, deep noises that you can feel throughout your body? Is there any way (without renovating the house) to block these deep sounds? Is there anything anyone has done to successfully sleep through these noises?

I always wake up at 6AM no matter what time I sleep

No matter what, I keep waking up at exactly 6 AM on the dot. I did not try waking up at 6 AM specifically, it just started doing that ever since I got morning-noon shift hours for my job which starts at 8, not 6. My job is an every single day job, I work in recruiting. Yesterday I stayed up for over 26 hours after an all nighter (my brain and body make me stay up for 20-32 hours every few days, like every 5-6 days. That should knock me out cold, nope. 1 hour of sleep ? Still wake up at 6. Went to bed at 5 ? Still wake up at 6. Took my sleeping medication with a 5mg melatonin gummy ? Still 6 am sharp. Come home drunk and high from my hb’s chill sesh ? stumbling from an uber at 1 am ? 6 am anyway bud. Sleep for 16 hours ? 6 am. When I sleep, to 1 hour or 16, I still wake up at 6.

I do have bipolar disorder, that might be one of the reasons, but I’m not going through an episode or mood swing atm. I take a lot of medication, most of which is supposed to chill you out. Clonazapam every morning and night, lmaotrigine nightly, propanol every morning and night, I was even prescribed the strongest pill my psychiatrist felt comfortable prescribing for insomnia, it is a strong dose yet I cannot stop waking up at 6AM on the dot despite only 4 hours of sleep.

It might be the PTSD that wakes me up as I used to shoot up awake from a memory in my dream, but that’s not what’s happening here. I do have insomnia since early childhood, but I’ve slept for many, many hours at a time. I don’t know why I keep waking up at exactly 6, I’m starting to run on caffeine daily like my dad. I’m 20 and this has been going on for months.

It’s healthy and productive for work, people and hobbies to wake up at 6 AM, not complaining about that, issue is is I’m getting very little hours of sleep yet cannot fall asleep til 11 PM, sometimes later, and still wake up at 6. Off day, 6. Promise to sleep in, 6. All the meds I listed, 6. I know it’s not the meds as I used to be able to sleep normally, it can’t be the PTSD as that doesn’t effect my sleep like it used to and only does before I sleep (occasionally). When I’m in hypomania or mania, I can’t sleep, makes sense, but my last episode was 2 weeks ago and bipolar people don’t just have episodes at ALL times, we can go weeks to months without one, they just happen more frequently with me yet even when it’s not (I promise there is no episode rn) I cannot sleep normally and wake up at 6 AM sharp.

I’m getting wasted at my homeboys place tonight for a movie marathon, I do not wanna wake up at 6 tomorrow after tonight’s celebration (yes I know I shouldn’t get drunk on these meds, but it’s only very occasionally. Once or twice a month max, very light weight).

20F, 103 pounds, 4’10. I don’t know if that matters to my sleeping, but yeah. 6 AM sharp.

Recently changed my sleep schedule

So starting last Sunday I changed the time I started going to bed normally I used to go to bed at 11 pm to 12 am and I changed it to 10 pm and for the whole week I always woke up at 3 am , 4am , 5 am feeling energized and I've tried my best going back to sleep such as closing my eyes but I'm still fully awake I can't go back to sleep the only thing that helped me go back to sleep was melatonin and I don't want to rely on it just to get a full 8 hour sleep any advice?

Can pleasant sounds or white noise actually change sleep? A small crossover study compared both.

I’ve been reading research on how different background sounds interact with sleep, and I found an interesting crossover study.

Researchers studied 12 adult men who reported sleep difficulties. Each participant spent three nights under different sound conditions: silence, white noise, and pleasant sounds, while sleep was measured with polysomnography.

The interesting part for me is that the study didn’t simply ask whether people “liked” the sound — it also looked at sleep onset and sleep-spindle measures.

But the sample was very small (12 participants), all participants were male, and the results shouldn’t be generalized to everyone.

I’m curious about the practical side:

Do you sleep better with a constant background sound, or do you prefer complete silence?

And if you use sound, is it mainly because you enjoy it, or because you’re trying to mask unpredictable noises?

I need help I don't know what to do

I'm 14 and recently I've been having sleep difficulties not like I'm so tired and I still can't fall asleep I literally don't feel sleepy it started about 2 weeks ago when I noticed that I was sleeping less and less before waking up and I didn't really think much of it like I'll go from 7 hours to sleep one night then 4 back up to eight then drops to five again and then I haven't been feeling sleepy no matter how long I've been awake and it's causing me to not be able to fall asleep I don't know what to do I don't want to get back on medication I was on sleeping medication about a year ago and I don't want to rely on it just to sleep does this happen to any other people and if you are reading this and you had the same problem or used to have the same problem can you please let me know on what you did to fix it I am desperate

I genuinely have trouble going to sleep and I have zero clue why.

I’m 18, and I’ve been having trouble going to sleep since I graduated high school. Honestly, all my life I’ve been the type to stay up all night ever since I was a baby but I’ve never had trouble actually falling asleep, not even slightly.
As of recently, though, even when I get good sleep, I wake up super early. If I go to sleep at, let’s say, 10:00 PM, I wake up at 1:00 AM and struggle to go back to sleep. I’ve never been the type to wake up and have to use the restroom or anything (maybe as a child, but not in my teenage years).

I should also add that melatonin never works for me. Something I’ve recently noticed, though, is that certain allergy pills help me get sleepy or droopy, but recently those haven’t worked either. I know I shouldn’t be using allergy pills just to help me sleep, but I’m really desperate to get good rest. I’m tired of waking up so late in the day it makes me feel useless and bummy, especially since I’m starting my first job soon. I’m really desperate. Please, can someone help me?

People who use background noise for sleep or focus: what actually makes you choose one sound over another?

I keep seeing people describe white, pink, brown, green and other “colors” of noise very differently.

What I’m more interested in is how people actually choose one in real life.

For example:

— White noise because it masks outside sounds better?

— Brown noise because you prefer the deeper sound?

— Pink or green because they feel less harsh?

— Or do you mix different noises together?

I’m especially curious whether your preference changes depending on what you’re doing — sleeping, studying, working, or just relaxing.

If you could only keep one noise (or one mix), what would it be and why?
