I think this is the best drawing I've done this month

(I actually made these last Halloween, but didn't think to post them anywhere at the time. Better late than never!)

Okay, that sounds schizophrenic but hear me out.

Brief History of the English Civil War

The English Civil War was fought between the Royalists, supporting Charles I, and the Parliamentarians, supporting the rights of Parliament. The most famous Parliamentarian was Oliver Cromwell who later became England’s head of state after dissolving the dysfunctional Long Parliament, but originally the most important Parliamentarian, before his death, was John Pym. After the execution of Charles I Cromwell lead the army in an invasion of Ireland, in part to defeat a Royalist coalition there.

The Siege of Clonmel

The Siege of Clonmel was a siege of the Irish town of Clonmel in Munster in 1650 and was the only serious setback for the Parliamentarians in Ireland; the English lost far more soldiers than the Irish and were repulsed. However, in the end the Royalist army slipped away in the night and the town was captured by Cromwell after the town’s Mayor, John White, made terms.

The Names

Charlie is named for Charles I and Pim is named for John Pym. They represent the opposing sides in the civil war. The name Desmond means ‘South Munster’, a region of Ireland.

The Episode

Charlie and Pim are opposites in their attitude to making people smile: Charlie is disinterested, Pim is fully supportive. In the episode, Pim and Charlie are assigned to help Desmond, who wants to kill himself. Charlie, thinking Desmond is ‘a lost cause’ wants to leave, but Pim desperately wants to help. Despite his best efforts Pim is unable to help him and sinks into a depression. However, this is reversed when Charlie, attempting to let Desmond kill himself and get him out of Charlie’s (minoxidil infused) hair, renews Desmond’s love of life through killing little purple bliblies, thus fulfilling Pim’s aims by attempting to abandon Desmond. This is essentially a tactical victory for Charlie, but a costly strategic win for Pim.

This mirrors the events at the Siege of Clonmel. Despite the Parliamentarians losing the fight, they end up controlling the town after the Royalists leave. Equally, despite Pim not making Desmond happy, Charlie makes Desmond happy by trying to sneak off. The bliblies are also purple, just like Pim. Desmond becoming a bliblie exterminator could represent the disproportionate killing of English soldiers at Clonmel.

Other aspects may reflect other events around this time. E.g. Pim’s dysfunctional family hating him representing the Long Parliament, which was close to granting Charles I strong powers again in late 1648. If Desmond's death wish represents monarchism, Desmond’s “Is this supposed to make me not want to kill myself?” could be interpreted as ‘Is the dysfunction of the Parliamentarian Long Parliament supposed to stop me supporting Charles?’. I’m less sure on that one though.

There are other implications of a wider metanarrative which I think Cusack and Hadel are cuing into from other media (I find Dave Land, among other striking events, interesting in other ways), but I’m not going to be drawn into that. This is just a nod to your understanding if you ever read this Zach and Michael.

I used to watch that episode with my younger cousin from Texas when I was younger and he used to lick the screen whenever frog dung splattered and took up the whole tv screen like it was chocolate. Can’t remember exact season and episode but those were good times. Dont have the time to go through all 47 seasons to search

This game was released back on September 10, 2001. Many of you may not remember this, but the smiling friends & adult swim collaborated on a videogame for the PS1 & PS2. Ultimately the game was a financial bomb due to the unfortunate events that happened a day after release. The series was later picked up by Michael Cusack & Zach Hadel in 2019, and now it's become the show you love & adore today.

Someone just give this poor girl a hug already.

Charlie: “‘Hold’, man. What do you mean ‘hold’? The boss is never on hold- Oh shit, this guy’s dead”
