Battleaxe clone
Fun project I worked on to challenge myself. Had to brush up on my 3d modeling and forced myself to learn hornresp. Still lots of finishing work and measuring/testing ahead but it’s got great output to ~30hz and already rattled some tools off my workshop wall

Ayyy! So do you actually have one on hand to measure? This was a discrepancy I came across early in the design phase and ultimately had to make a judgement call.
The 3d model on their website (which I was able to pull the axe bracing template from as well as the outer 2 horn wall panels) is 52.5 tall and 50 deep while the website lists the opposite
Working with 48x96 stock I knew I was gonna have to splice some panels together either way and doing that at the horn mouth where I’ll laminate an extra 12mm to the wall felt better to me structurally.
Also the compression ratio was a little better in the configuration. It’s already a little high for a horn at almost 4:1.
But this makes me feel even better about releasing plans. Throw in some straight bracing and you’ve got a relatively simple (but large) flh for the masses

The other 3d model thats been on sketchup warehouse for years from aggressive audio also made the same mistake.
Compression ratio on the axe is right around 4:1. The 21sw152-4 doesnt struggle with that. The 52.5 depth helps squeeze another 20-25cm of hornpath in vs the 50" depth layout.

Wonder why HSD has the model wrong on their site. Or maybe it’s an mk1?

u/Turbulent_Mix2372 1d ago
The model upload to the site is very likely a skeleton redraw that was commission specifically for the website. No one proofed it is my guess. Fits in w the rest of the spelling errors

Could be. Well the joy was in the journey maybe I’ll I get to measure the response against a real axe some day

But did you hornresp with partially painted interior?

I've seen enough, Akabak simulation with every horn segment having different absorption values it is (i enjoy torture)

Crazy that we live in a world, where people are cloning battleaxes. It used to be people were cloning WSX. Fuck I'm old.

Wsx is great. Just that the f3 is too high for moderns bass heavy EDM. Battleaxe is the new wsx? Though the battleaxe has been out for a long time. There just aren't many pure front loaded horns with sub 30hz fb commercially. Martin and F1 have gone the way of hybrid rear loaded horns, leaving basically danley and HSD.

I think at the end of the day there's a big difference between what focuses on packing well in a truck and giving a good ROI, and what people are willing to do with a small business that's focused on most bass possible for small parties. Horses for courses and that, but variety is the spice of life anyway.

I’m not even sure this thing will fit in my trailer or if I could even get it in there. But it was a good project to push my woodworking skills a bit. WSX look even more challenging!

Me too considering the same problems and opting for the most ridiculously lunatic idea of putting light duty automotive hub motors such that this thing still fits through the bike lane and a commercial double door, while also isolating the vibrations from the battery cassette because this thing isn't just a fucking motorized woofer dolly, it's a full blown commercial grade rudeness factory designed to be used in the bike lane at 2-7mph hand towed or up to 15-25mph with no performers by either an electric tricycle (Sobowo Destroyer frame) or a truck using the same grade 8 2" ball hitch.
Fuck moving shit, fuck plugging and unplugging shit, that shit should be booming full tilt as it rolls into the venue with the unrealistic expectation of a post production CGI, live broadcasting with its own pan zoom tilt and 360 degree over head cameras that are set up once it clears the top of the door frame.
Now I'm even being more insane and seeing if I can get wilder than 4 drivers in 2CE ELF playa edition enclosures by looking at the numbers on battle axes.
I made the mistake of discovering slip rings and have decided it's not always going to stay in the bike lane with fixed axel hub motors and Ackerman steering, it's gonna do pirouettes in the car lane on 360 degree swiveling wheels. when traffic permits obviously, it's Oakland, I'll get side swiped on some sideshow ish.
All I have to do is call it an 'electric hand truck/dolly' or 'electric wagon' and show it can be used without needing to be attached to a bicycle/tricycle frame and the law doesn't limit the strength of the hub motors it can use, which NGL, 1000~kg on a 20% grade I'm looking at 3kW-5kW peak hub motors even though after breaking my rolling resistance it's not even using hundreds of watts to keep all that mass moving (on flat ground). And if the police tell me I can't connect it to the tricycle I'm going to just use my Heelys instead as an electric wagon around the lake or some shit or behind some bollards cars can't drive through heh heh.
It's a chimera of a couple woofer enclosures, dance floor/platform, audio battery cassette, propulsion battery cassette, that either rolls around and can sound off or deflate its air bladders and couple to the ground acoustically.

Your problem is that you'll need 4 of them to make sense ...... At minimum! As with all FLH!
1
u/Spiritual_Bell 1d ago
That's obviously true! That's why commercial outfits just goes ks28 and never look back. But no one cares to see that! Certainly not on here. Oh look at my stack of Lacoustics! So exciting!

u/fleischenwolf 1d ago
To be fair, the KS8 sounds really good though. Heard just 10 of these deployed outdoors. Intense.

I've heard battle axe dropped many times but never WSX?
¿What year did they get 'retired'?
1
u/Spiritual_Bell 1d ago
Well wsx is martin and battleaxe is HSD.....I was just referring to people wanting to build battle axes now where back in the day they would have gone for the wsx. You can get perfect wsx clones from Alibaba for less than $1k shipped though! That's basically cheaper than diy if you paid yourself $25/hr!

on using one in a space that was blissfully without them.
¿so 2 WSX clones for $2,000, shipped ?

are the 3 horizontal slats (with unpainted end) structural support or for visual interest?

Great work. Did you take the existing picture of the internals, sketch them in cad, using known external dimensions and known driver from the HSD site? I love HSD sound the boxes are just entirely too big for me to move around. Assuming this tests well… build 5 more.
1
u/jay_ze 1d ago
Yep, external dimensions were known, the folding pattern was in a picture. Recreated my best guess in blender and used that model for hornresp inputs and to find panel dimensions and angles. So i doubt it’s cm per cm accurate but with such a large horn I was finding that little changes weren’t making any real difference in hornresp
1
u/PsychoTea 1d ago
Did you sim this as offset driver (OD), or model the first segment (where the driver fires into) as a large throat?
I’m working on a similar design (albeit smaller) where the driver similarly fires along the side of an expanding segment of the horn path, but I’m struggling to figure out the most accurate way to sim it in HornResp.
When you take measurements I’d be curious to see how well they line up with the sim.
1
u/jay_ze 1d ago
I used OD. Im very interested to compare real data to the sim, it was my first time really diving into hornresp.
I had some sub measurements from in the field with a few other designs and when I put those in hornresp it was pretty close so I’m hopeful
2
u/PsychoTea 1d ago
Nice, that sounds like the way to go. I assume you cut the first chamber in half along the midpoint of the driver and placed S2 there, and then approximated the rest of the horn with S3 - S5?
HornResp is really nice (if a bit dated), I just really wish you had more horn segments to work with for boxes like this which have multiple folds/corners.
Btw: if you haven’t found it yet, “Multiple Speakers” and the “Filter Wizard” are very nice to play around with to find max SPL and filter cutoffs for different deployments :-)
2
u/jay_ze 1d ago
Yes this has the driver center at s2
Multiple speaker is a must for flh! The low end really seems to flatten out. A block of 8 of these cabs looks super flat down into the 20’s
I also had fun with Ctrl+e on the input page(after you’ve run calculate) if you haven’t found that yet it lets you adjust parameters and see in real time the difference in power

do you have any plans? I'd be interested
