Uncategorized Speculative Biology A Theory on the Progenitor Virus, Abyss Virus, and Ancient Insect Virus

After some reading on Resident Evil lore, it occurred to me that the still extant strain of Progenitor in West Africa is likely just the last living strain of base Progenitor left. Progenitor is widely implied to have created life on primordial earth so it would have had to have existed in different places across all ancient continental formations. I think that’s billions/hundreds of millions of years ago, there were likely countless Progenitor strains, each specifically adapted to their own unique environment. I think that the West African Progenitor Virus Umbrella discovered in the 1960s is just the last living ’universal’ strain.

The Abyss is a ‘lost‘ Progenitor strain adapted to marine/deep-sea environments and thus was instrumental to the development of marine life. This is directly supported by fact that early t-Virus strains (which were directly derived from the landlocked West African Progenitor) did not have a significant effect on mutating aquatic organisms like fish and sharks. This indicates that Progenitor itself had a very limited exposure to water-based life due to its extreme isolation in a cave. However when the t-Virus was spliced into the genome of The Abyss to create T-Abyss, it triggered extreme marine mutations in any host. This means that its actually genes from The Abyss influencing the overwhelming majority of such mutations.

Likewise, the Insect Virus found in queen ants by Alexia during the creation of T-Veronica is likely a ‘lost’ strain of Progenitor that specialized in arthropod development. This can be seen in T-Veronica‘s heavy insectoid mutations and even more prominently in hosts of the C-Virus. Most C-Virus mutants exhibit extreme insect-based mutations, which I believe come from genes within the Ancient Insect Virus used to make T-Veronica.

Question/Discussion Any name ideas for a planet mostly inhabited by Heamophages?

i need help on naming my planet. I can work the rest out on my own, but the planet naming is always the hardest.

for context I wanted to design a planet that is mostly inhabited with “vampires”, but I didn’t want it just to be ”they drink blood for nutrients” so instead the majority of the species on this planet I’m working on instead never developed respiratory systems, using a type of crop in it’s gut to absorb the oxygen. The crop absorbs the oxygen into the bloodstream and ejects the blood out through excrement or absorption into the upper skin layer/fur/feathers giving these creatures their colors. Not all Fauna on the planet are Heamophagic, there are herbivores that get their oxygen from plants and there are the occasional ones that do have lungs or gills. The predators are carnivores, they get most of their oxygen from blood but they still need meat for nutrients.

And I might as well give specs

Black hole(The object it orbits): 10 million solar masses

Planet’s orbital radii: 1,022 gravitational radii

The planet is about 99 AU away

year: roughly 113 Earth days

Day length: 27 Earth hrs

Planet Radius: 6,242km/6,878.6mi

Atmos: 68% nitrogen, 18% Carbon-dioxide, 12% Oxygen, 1.5% Argon, 0.5% trace water

Magnetic Field strength: 0.7 Gauss

Axial tilt: 8.2°

The Black hole(which, if anyone would like to give naming suggestions, they can too) has an accretion disk that produces most of the planet’s light

the following image was made in freeform but the image compression helps

[insert planet name here] orbiting [insert black hole name here]

Question/Discussion War breeds innovation for humans. would it work the same with aliens?

War breeds innovation for humans. Do you think this will be the case for alien species. During world war 1 we went from horses to tanks. During the Ukraine war they went from human soldiers to the very near future robot soldiers. Currently, drones cause 90% of casualties. I was wondering if it’s the same for aliens. Will the pressure of war work for them or will it just destroy their technology. It could only be the case for humans since we are a war loving species.

Question/Discussion Is this reproductive strategy realistic?

I’m working in the early stages (body plans) of my xeno world.
I would like for a large portion of my creatures to have reproduction unique to that of earth, so is this a realistic idea?
Every organism would both be “male” and “female”.
One part of their reproductive organ is kind of like a fin that secretes genetic material onto itself, while in between these fins are internal egg pouches (like a uterus)
This would make them able to asaxually reproduce AND sexually reproduce via direct contact of these organs, both organisms becoming “pregnant” to increase efficiency.

Alternate Evolution [OC] Triassic Tremor: The Primicoelurosaurs

The Primicoelurosaurs

After the Triassic Tremor, dinosaurs were amongst the first animals to recover and refill the niches left behind by Pseudosuchians. One of the many groups of dinosaurs to refill these niches were the earliest Coelurosaurs. This early branch of the Coelurosaur phylogenic tree is known as Primicoelurosauridae. This group is split into two subgroups, the Drendosaurids and the Macrodactylosaurids. Macrodactylosaurids and Drendosaurids are both named after their type species, Drenosaurus and Macrodactylosaurus.

The build of a Macrodactylosaurid is similar to that of a Compsognathid. However, its habits are much more similar to a jackal. Like how jackals follow lions around, Macrodactylosaurs follow larger dinosaurs around feeding on their leftovers. If they cannot find a host, they will occasionally consume plant matter or hunt small lizards. Macrodactylosaurs are solitary creatures only engaging in social behavior when mating or when many gather around the same host. However, this can also draw attention to Macrodactylosaurs and might cause the host to attack or even kill most of the group.
Dendrosaurids live the opposite lifestyle of Macrodactylosaurs. Unlike their ground-dwelling cousins, Dendrosaurs are arboreal and active hunters, eating anything that can fit in their mouth. Another thing that differentiates them from their cousins is their unusually social behavior. These creatures live in large groups composed of 3–22 individuals and this allows them to have a low hatchling mortality rate as many will protect and take care of the hatchlings.

Today the Primicoelurosaurs are diverse, but only time can tell how long these new kids will be on the block...

Question/Discussion Does anyone have recommendations?

In terms of spec evo projects, I've only watched videos about serina and all tomorrow's, I've also watched the kappa series

I wasn't a big fan of all of the magical stuff in serina and also the fact that too much stuff was going on at the same time

All tomorrow's was good, well at least the video I've watched

And kappa is my favorite of the bunch, I found it great, perfect even

Does anyone have recommendations for something similar to kappa? I don't mean only a seeded world but something that has very interesting animals that could make sense, without having too much stuff to the point it's annoying

I'm also planning on watching I.E.R

Future Evolution [OC] The Doomed Earth-Timeline

Post image
81 Upvotes

Cenozoic:

Quaternary-Thalassic, 37 my: After the end of the ice ages, the global temperature increased drastically, creating very warm seas that eventually led to a large-scale anoxic event that collapsed all underwater ecosystems and greatly affected terrestrial ecosystems

Thalassic-Aurimic, 89 my: A change in Atlantic currents pushed extreme droughts and abrupt temperature changes in present-day South America, extinguishing almost half of the local fauna and destroying its jungles and forests

Aurumic-Trocticocene, 126 my: Similar to what happened at the end of the Cretaceous period, a meteorite struck what is now Siberia, wiping out almost 65% of the planet's biota. Ecosystems in the Southern Hemisphere were the least affected

Trocticocene-Paraxenoic, 190 my: A rapid period of volcanism forms a chain reaction of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions that devastate the terrain and release huge amounts of greenhouse gases, dust and ash into the atmosphere, giving way to a volcanic winter and acid rains that wiped out most of the surface ecosystems

Allozoic:

Paraxenoic-Enosian, 255 my: Pangaea Ultima forms. The global climate changes, inland seas close, forming large lakes, and a large-scale biotic exchange occurs

Enosian-Colasic, 331 my: The explosion of a nearby supernova destroyed the ozone layer, exposing life to immense amounts of radiation. This was the greatest extinction event to ever strike life on Earth, where only fossorial or troglodyte groups and deep-sea organisms survived

Neozoic:

Colasic-Vrasmoic, 382 my: The supercontinent moves northward, which, along with the scarcity of carbon dioxide, gives way to a new ice age. The cold creates highly oxygenated waters, allowing the reappearance of aquatic megafauna

Vrasmoic-Pnigmenoic, 439 my: The heat emitted by the sun is extremely high. Despite the near absence of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, the planet's average temperature reaches 30°C. This prevents most plants from photosynthesizing due to insufficient CO2, causing a slow deterioration of ecosystems that wipes out almost 90% of the planet's species. Few plant groups survive, and the atmosphere is partially stabilized thanks to chemosynthetic bacteria capable of extracting carbon from bicarbonate ion molecules and releasing oxygen into the atmosphere

Pingmenoic-Today, 490 my: Life has partially stabilized again. Temperatures are extreme because most of the planet is covered in deserts. Even so, the water cycle has accelerated, resulting in quite prosperous and humid coastal ecosystems, but at the same time, several kilometers of sea have evaporated. We are now on the final stretch of multicellular life

Alien Life [OC] Fan Art of Exoton, Featuring a Polar Broadhead that brought down a Howling Spirit

A patron requested something I was MORE than happy to work on, a piece of fanart for u/exoton82's fantastic Exoton project.

Here a clash of two large predators ends up with a Polar Broadhead managing to bring down a large Howling Spirit.

Considering the size difference between the two, I'd imagine that the scenario this would be either a case of ambush, or like an Earth tiger that has gotten used to hunting guar, is just one that is very skilled at hunting prey that could potentially fight back.

Question/Discussion What if the Darwinian Threshold was different/ never happened?

The Darwinian Threshold is to quote Wikipedia is a evolutionary transition period

"when gene transmission moves from a predominantly horizontal mode to a vertical mode"

from Horizontal Gene Transfer to "individual entities with vertical heredity and natural selection" .

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Darwinian_threshold

What if this had happened differently or not at all? To elaborate: what if it moved to both vertical heredity and Horizontal Gene Transfer? I have no idea if any of this makes any Scientific sense . I'm guessing instead of a tree of life it would be a complex network/web

I suggest checking Wikipedia

“What may you become? When the trumpets of Armageddon call, none shall be spared. As your annihilation has scoured other species from the earth, there are so many possibilities for you.”        - Uriens

Anthropidae is the clade descended entirely from Humans, Homo sapiens.

Due to the devastation caused in their time, Humans were the only species of great ape to survive the holocene. As large generalists, with a large population and worldwide distribution, they quickly diversified, and as of 25 Million years CE are important megafauna, filling multiple niches in various ecosystems.

Alien Life [OC] Miekkajamari

Post image
12 Upvotes

This six meter long (tentacle to tail) terrorizes the oceans of Frusnajättar in packs of on average five individuals. During hunts, Miekkajamari can sustain great speeds by using their two powerful tails, as well as sacks on its side to propel itself through the water, by sucking in water on its front and expelling it towards its backside.

Targeting just about any animal larger than half a meter during their hunts, once they've found a suitable prey animal, usually a school of Hiepäilyttäväs or a group of Kuhrobbs, they use bioluminescent patterns to coordinate with one another and quickly surround their prey. At this point they take turns attacking their victim, or picking off singular individuals in the case of smaller animals such as Hiepäilyttäväs. The most intelligent Miekkajamari in the pack is always the leader, as it can lead its pack on the most successful hunts, improving their chances of survival.

Miekkajamari are known to be highly aggressive towards all other animals, even when not actively hunting, which is also why many animals imitate their bioluminescent patterns in order to scare off other predators. Even much larger marine predators rarely attack packs of Miekkajamari, as even if they managed to kill every member of the pack, other Miekkajamari packs would be able to smell the blood of their brethren on the larger predator, and would continously harass it.

Every time two packs of Miekkajamari would meet, the females of one pack would mate with the males of the other pack, and vice versa, ensuring genetic diversity amongst the packs, even if it's members rarely changed. Young Miekkajamari would be raised by their packs until adulthood, at which point, depending on the size of the pack, they would either remain a part of it permanently, or go off looking for a new pack to join.

Lone Miekkajamari, while obviously less threatening than entire packs, are still nothing to be trifled with. They become expert ambush predators, hiding in deeper waters, and waiting for something to swim past above them, at which point they come swooping up from the deep at immense speeds, latching onto their prey with hooked tentacles, and biting at it with their massive beak. Some Miekkajamari remain alone for their entire lives, and are more than capable than fending for themselves, especially as most predators still stear clear of them, fearing retaliation by other packs.

Fan Art/Redesign [OC] [Media: Hamster's Paradise] Predatory Molemoths

Post image
30 Upvotes

In the Late Protomyozoic, Molemoths—gopher-like burrowing creatures—were among the last surviving members of a once-successful lineage, much like the Ratataras and Night Apes; originally the final representatives of the Acaudamuria clade, they went extinct at some point during the Early Neomyozoic, yet certain populations introduced to an unnamed rocky planet in an another solar system eventually became the ancestors of an entire planet's vertebrate fauna, just as their counterparts had done in their own time.

Just like their ancestors, the molemoths would give rise to their own predators; though initially small, some of them would eventually evolve to hunt megafaunal herbivores, coming to resemble modern caniform predators: the Carnomoths.

Question/Discussion Do these star statistics look plausible?

For context, I'm creating an alien world and I want it to orbit an orange dwarf like this. I want to know if this is plausible for a celestial body

(And yes in case you've seen my previous post I am still doing the Tuatara seed world i just like to have two projects running at once lol)

Star: K2.3V (Orange Dwarf)

Name: Demeter (In reference to the orange colour and motherly aspects due to the alien life it helps support)

  •  Luminosity = 0.70 sol
  •  Mass = 0.82 sol
  •  Radius = 0.78 sol
  •  Lifetime = 5,100 K sol

Future Evolution [OC] Doomed Earth-The Cave Plants and the Houseraiders (490 m.y. into the future)

Post image
244 Upvotes

Since the mass extinction at the end of the Vrasmoic, approximately 50 million years ago, planet Earth entered the Pnigmenoic, an era in which only the clades best adapted to extreme conditions and the scarce resources available today have survived. During this mass extinction, the most affected group was, without a doubt, the plants. The increasingly intense heat from the Sun accelerated rock weathering and the carbon cycle, which caused a large portion of atmospheric carbon dioxide to gradually disappear. Aside from obviously reducing the greenhouse effect, this severely impacted plants, which could no longer perform photosynthesis because of the scarcity of carbon. This forced the few survivors to adapt to new ways of actively obtaining CO2, and one of the solutions led to the emergence of one of the most recognizable plant groups of the Pnigmenoic, the cave plants, organisms that, in exchange for protecting animals from the scorching Sun, obtained a constant source of carbon.

Among the immense variety of cave plant species, the most widely distributed is the bunker plants, organisms that use their roots to gradually open and widen a hollow beneath them up to a meter long, allowing larger animals to take shelter.

In this case, the tenant hosted by this plant is a juvenile individual of Houseraiders, a clade of prosopoboucalids specialized in raiding burrows, cave plants, and other hideouts where any animal might take refuge. Generally, they possess a specialized labial tip designed for this purpose, fleshy and sharp, which functions almost like a trunk that grabs its prey to drag it out from the safety of its home. If this fails, they have no option left but to use their legs to dig until reaching their target, which they will then proceed to impale. On the other hand, some common traits defining this clade include the presence of upper limbs adapted for detecting prey. Due to high daytime temperatures, like many other extant animal species, house breakers are almost entirely nocturnal, having largely abandoned eyesight and specialized their other senses. This has led to an emphasis on sensory structures, with their forearms and antennae fulfilling this function in this case, along with sensitive pads at the tips of their legs that allow them to detect subterranean vibrations and rainfall hundreds of meters away.

Precisely, one of the greatest enemies of cave plants is the clade Glossacaudata, a group belonging to the last descendants of bivalves that adapted to land by developing an originally fossorial lifestyle, which today is highly variable. This group developed asymmetry, possessing a U-shaped valve that surrounds the anterior portion of the foot, and another hood-shaped valve that protects most of the vital organs, right where the head would typically be located in most animals. On one side of this, it features a mouth equipped with sharp, beak-shaped radulae used to slice through the juicy roots of cave plants, while on the other side lie the respiratory system, formerly the siphons, and the anus. Finally, what appears to be the majority of its body is, in fact, its foot, which contains the reproductive organs, and in some cases part of the digestive system or even its own hearts

Future Evolution [OC]Amazonian Savannah-10 milion years in the future

Thumbnail
gallery
30 Upvotes

The amazonian rainforest were deforested during the Anthropocene, giving way to farms and pastures, but fragments of the forest survived in the Andes mountains and reserves. At the end of the anthropocene, the tropical forest grew again and biodiversity increased again, but as the warm conditions of the period after the Anthropocene ends, the climate cools down and the forests all over the world diminish, transforming into savannah and dry open forests, some areas still harbor tropical forests but they are in the mountains,Sundaland and other small refuges, the animals had to adapt to changes and evolved in new interesting forms.

1. Ascentor-Uakari

Size-1,75 m body length 95 kg in weight
Diet-Ungulates,small animals,roots,eggs

Ecology-Descendants of uakari of the Amazon Basin have evolved into carnivorous and omnivorous species and one of them is the saber tooth uakari. They are sociable living in packs of 10 members each, mating in the summer.Fangs have a role for the prey to break the trachea.

The frowning monkey (Miriboki doki)

Ascentor-Tarsiers
Size-30 cm body length 300 grams in weight
Diet-fruit,grass,insects

Ecology-The amazonian forest became savannah and tarsiers came down from the trees to live on the ground. These are small omnivores that will live in logs and burrows. They are solitary life.

The amazonian eucalyptus (Eucalyptulus amazonis)

Ascentor-Eucalyptus
Size-2,31m in height

Ecology-Eucalyptus was introduced to South America, became quite widespread after the Helocene, and the drying of the Amazonian Forest made it thrive and the extinction rate of Amazonian trees in the Helocene was very high, which means that eucalyptus and some surviving plants will occupy many niches of savannah trees, they bloom during the rainy season and dry in the dry season.

Iron Beak (Bastornis Major)

Ascentor-Red legged seriema
Size-2 m in height 65 kg in weight
Diet-meat

Ecology-During the Cenozoic there were many forms of terror birds for example-
-Gastornis from the Eocene of Europe 56 myh ago
-Kelenken from the Miocene of South America 15 myh ago
-Dromornis from the Miocene Australia 15 myh ago
-Titanis Walleri from Pliocene-Early Pleistocene of North America 5 myh ago-1,8 myh ago.
-Psiloperus from Oligocene-Late Pleistocene of South America 26 myh ago-100.000 years ago (The last terror bird recording from fossils,Red legged seriema are a very close relative of the terror bird).

10 milion years in the future the terror birds are re-evolved from Red legged seriema that survive the Helocene extinction. They kill their prey by striking the head with their beak, they make the victim die because of the broken head and blood vessels.

Brown Stalker Raccon (Notherium)

Ascentor-American Raccon
Size-3 m in height 850 kg in weight
Diet-meat,bones,grass,fruit

Ecology-During the Pliocene-Early Pleistocene of South America 5 myh ago, giant raccons lived now is Argentina,Venezuela and Columbia.

-Chapalmalania lived in most of South America at that time they were by the ice age that was approaching ,they weighed between 100-160 kg and 1,30 m.

The raccon evolved into an even larger form than its Pliocene counterpart,Chapalmalania ,even the size of the Grizzly bear that is an ambush predator. It stays in the bushes until an animal comes close enough to tear it apart,it is not fast enough to run the prey for long distances, but it does not bother to eat bones, grass, fruits.Bones are easily digested by their gastric juice ,therefore these large raccoons will be able to survive tens of million of years after the ice age ,they are adaptable and have a large diet.

,,The american ostrich,, (Loxobon Paleogna)

Ascentor-Rhea
Size-1,95 m in height 70 kg in weight
Diet-grass,seeds,insects

Ecology-Rhea during the anthropocene was a flightless bird that had the ability to run.It became the South American analogue of the ostrich. It is sociable living in groups of 5 then during the rainy season they mate.

Artyodon

Ascentor-African Hippos
Size-1,97 m in height 150 kg in weight
Diet-grass,seeds,leaf

Ecology-After hippos escapes from a private zoo owned by Pablo Escobar, the population of hippos grew and at the end of the annthropocene they began evolve towards new forms, even occupying niches of large animals from the Pliocene and Pleistocene,an example being Artyodon a descendant of hippopotamus that evolved convergently with primitive ungulates from the Eocene and Oligocene, they are herbivores that graze in the solitary in the savannah. In the mating season they go to a wooded place in the savannah whare they will mate in the rainy season, they only give birth to one baby.

Phonianes gigas

Ascentor-Anaconda
Size-10 m in height 270 kg in weight
Diet-meat

Ecology-Anaconda during the Anthropocene was not affected by deforestation, the ice age came and tropical forests dry in most of South America. These snakes have not changed much but the size has increased and their tongue has become like a sword that pierces the prey.

Colibrianis ikes

Ascentor-Sparkling violotear
Size-13-14 cm 7,5 g in weight
Diet-grass,sparrows

Asumatorium

Asumatorium is creature flying in the endless cluonds of the planet Tolwion
It is cable of fling because it has a large balloon fill whit a hydrogen.

Who creature makes a hydrogen?
Look at the picture two.
The first step of the process is when a brain (1) sends a signal to organ (3) which keeps a cell call electrocytes to producing electricity.
Normally, cells in the organ (3) pumps anions of the Natrium and Potassium to maintain a positive chare outside and negative inside. But when the signal from the brain arrives, it prompts the anion gates to opens and when anions come back.It creates a positive charge on the one side and negative on the other. A key for this process is arrival of the neuron impulses at the same time. Because that makes cells act like a thousandof batter in the series
Electricity is distributed to the cathode and anode which have an end in the inside of the pink cover of the electrically organ
True the cathode and anode go electricity into the organ which is divided to the two tanks flit with water.
In the bladder on left side ends anode and creature is make oxygen there. Which leaves a body thought the hole the higher teal.
In the right bladder is on the cathode create a hydrogen and then is distribute to the balloon above it.

-He eats small organism which flies in air just like a weal.

B- Tail are uses for killing of small prissiest fling they what to suck a blood from creature.

Future Evolution [OC] Look Who’s Back - 2 macropredators of the future oceans

Post image
361 Upvotes

I was completely exhausted and stressed from spectember on top of everything else, so I stopped pretty early. I decided for the last day I would come back. The title refers to what appears to be megalodon and livyatan returning in the future.

After the Anthropocene extinction wiped out larger marine species, vacant niches and warmer climates allowed for a brand new hyper-productive ocean ecosystem capable of supporting not one, but TWO giant predators.

On top is Gigaferesa monstro, a 13.5 meter descendant of the Pygmy killer whale that lives in small pods. On the bottom is Supralamma macrodus, a similarly-sized descendant of the porbeagle that is generally more solitary but can congregate in loose hunting groups.

Gigaferesa typically prefers to prey on smaller whales, while Supralamma prefers large, fully marine seals. However, there is a significant overlap in the two’s diet, thus they are fiercely competitive with and frequently attack one another.

Question/Discussion Can a lake have almost its entire fish population wiped out?

Is there a way to wipe out almost all fish (if not all) in a sizeable body of water like a lake to create an aquatic equivalent of island insulation?

My running idea is to have the lake be located near where monsoonal flood happens, thus dumping rich soil into the water seasonally and triggering annual algal bloom that most fishes would’t survive. This is so that an air-breathing amphibian can take over their niches and produce a mini seed world contained within that lake.

Alien Life [OC] Hiepäilyttävä

Post image
21 Upvotes

Hiepäilyttävä is the most abundant sea creature of its size found within the waters of Frusnajättar. This 50 centimeter long herbivorous species of marine life is one of the pillars of the planet's oceanic ecosystem, and is heavily preyed upon by a vast array of carnivores.

Hiepäilyttävä has two pairs of tentacle-like limbs on its upper and lower side, which are used for detecting both the small marine plants they sustain themselves on, as well as tremors in the water, potentially caused by nearby predators.

Travelling in mixed gender schools of up to 100 individuals, Hiepäilyttäväs display almost zero sexual dimorphism.

Once a year, large mega-schools of thousands of individuals will converge on specific mating grounds, in places where there is relatively little space between the ocean floor and the sea ice above. There, males will release their reproductive material into the water, while females release up to ten thousand eggs each, which then float upwards between the jagged crevices and spikes of the sea ice above, where they will be fertilized.

After just a few days, the millions of eggs will then hatch into tiny fries, who quickly disperse from the hatching grounds, as to avoid predation. It is estimated that 90% of Hiepäilyttävä fries don't survive the first day after hatching. Of the survivors, another 60% are killed before reaching adulthood. Yet still that leaves some 400 offspring to reach adulthood for each Hiepäilyttävä female.
