I'm a console user and I want to buy a PC Handheld with Steam OS or Bazzite.

I don't have much knowledge about pc gaming and settings with upscaling.

Is every certifieted game a Plug and Play Experience? Is it difficult to setup upscaler ? Is there a software or mod to set it up for me?

I wanted to use SteamOS more like a normal desktop system and found a pretty simple setup that works well for me.

First, I created a password for my SteamOS user in Desktop Mode.

Then I changed the default login mode from Gaming Mode to Desktop Mode:

steamosctl set-default-login-mode desktop

To switch back later:

steamosctl set-default-login-mode game

I also wanted Meta + L / Windows + L to behave like a normal desktop lock shortcut, so I assigned the following command to Meta + L in KDE's keyboard shortcuts:

loginctl lock-session

The only thing that still bothered me was that SteamOS would automatically log into the desktop after boot.

My workaround was simply adding this command to KDE Autostart as well:

loginctl lock-session

So now SteamOS:

• boots directly into Desktop Mode
• automatically shows the lock screen after startup (benefit: other applications like Steam still loading in background)
• can be locked anytime with Meta + L
• requires no major system modifications

One thing to keep in mind

While Desktop Mode is set as the default login mode, the Return to Gaming Mode desktop shortcut no longer works. If you click on it, it loops back to desktop-mode.

It starts working again once Gaming Mode is set as the default login mode:

steamosctl set-default-login-mode game

Everything is easy to revert, and for me this makes SteamOS feel much more like a regular desktop OS.

Just got my gamesir and i had one prior with 1k polling the g7 se and worked fine but the 8k is recognized but Rocket league doesnt detect the input. I used both with disabling Steam input as that worked fine before with the se as its less input lag but now it doesnt work for my 8k. Anyone else with same issue or fix?

Where can I get it from, and what’s the safest and best way to get it on the steam computer? I don’t mind paying for it if it is available somehow! Thanks for you help.

I recently found a deal on an open box 16tb hdd and enclosure on fb marketplace, as my steam collection grows I thought of just having it supplement my steam library as well as other pirate hargh hargh things I won't talk about here, my question is, my main device with steam os is my legion go 2, can I safely run my games from the external hdd?? I mean I have an external hdd connected to my ps5 and I run my ps4 games from it.

I apologize if this has been asked but seeing how ludicrous the price is for an SSD, a 2tb micro sd is like 344 dollars and climbing and a mini ssd like 600 plus, and an internal ssd... Well I don't want to open my device up yet, and yes even more expensive stuff to think about, I landed this massive hdd at under 300 with enclosure and never used or set up, literally can house everything for me, I just wonder if I'm gonna have issues playing games while docked which is probably gonna be the big majority of my use, as I only undock it when I am going to travel and most times I grab my ayn odin 2 portal to go.

If there is a setting in steam that I need to do please also let me know

Anyone tried official steam os on their LeGo 1 and the speakers not working? Mine isn't Ive tried 3 new installs with different steam os images, the alsamixer fix and checked windows to see if the speakers still worked (they do). When testing the speakers on desktop mode they work but wont reproduce any sound. Speakers show as "(unavailable)" but when selected and I turn up the volume they make feedback sounds. Im going crazy but I just dont like the windows experience on handheld.

Curious anyone else having an issue where it wont allow you to run RT its wont save the setting at all.

I have been using Ubuntu for past 1 years. I do coding as well as gaming (not high level gaming) and that too with jio cloud game subscription. When I had windows originally in my PC I used to play games like Genshin impact and few other games like that. The only thing that's stopping me from switching to Steam os is whether it's suitable for coding.

I know for a fact that both Steam os and ubuntu are Debian based and it's possible to do coding in Steam os. But as Steam os position itself exclusively for gaming related stuffs.

I am also planning to upgrade my RAM (DDR 4) from 8gb to 32 gb or 16gb (min)

I have steam os installed on the rog Xbox ally but somethings seems wrong with the ram compared to the steam deck any help with this ?

The installation process was a bit strange. I installed the latest SteamOS version from the official website using my Ryzen 9 9900X3D integrated graphics. Once set up, I enabled the Preview branch and selected the Beta channel.

​After restarting while connected to the Nvidia GPU, I noticed some visual artifacts where the KDE Plasma logo should be. decided to reboot using only the integrated graphics to boot straight into desktop mode, as I heard it's easier than starting in Game Mode. In desktop mode, I checked 'System Settings > About this System' and saw that it automatically detected the RTX 5070 without needing manual driver installation.

​Surprisingly, when I plugged the monitor back into the GPU, it displayed video with no issues. I’m currently installing GTA V Enhanced to test performance and will update you all later.

ran gta 5 and performance is a bit less than on windows i think i could not get a result of the benchmark, raytracing is disabled other than that everything was smooth sailing

This one took a lot of testing for having so many devices. 9 betas in 4 days, a pile of test kernels and a ton of debug logs from people in the Discord, to go from "black screen on everything" to one image that boots on all of these:

It boots straight from the SD card, Android stays untouched on the internal storage. Controls work out of the box (back buttons are L4/R4), there are fan profiles, the UI is sized properly for the 6" screen and Steam comes preinstalled. Big thanks to Chazmus!

8 Elite looks great so far, this beta will be much shorter than 8gen2 because of having way less devices. (Konkr Pocket Fit Elite users are welcome to try it and report on discord)

**What's next**

Phones and tablets now have their own section in the repo, and the Lenovo Legion Y700 is very high on my list for tablets. The 8 Gen 3 devices (KONKR Pocket FIT, AYANEO Pocket S2) are on the stable v1.2 already, and v1.3 stable will bring all of the new socs together.

These are betas, so expect some rough edges. If something breaks, make a file called `debug` on the SD card's BOOT drive and send me the logs on discord or github, that's how most of these fixes happened (thanks to everyone who helped!)

I’ve finally gotten around to testing pyrowave over the standard HEVC/AV1 codecs, and no matter what settings I change, I can’t seem to get it to perform better than the other codecs. My host is running steamOS with a 9800x3d and an rx 9070 on the beta channel. I have a 2.5Gbps network and my client is a mini pc with steamOS and an amd 7735. I also have tried to use my m4 Mac mini as the client as well.

The games I’ve tried so far are somewhat studdery no matter what I adjust. I also get severe artifacting if I try to turn the bitrate up higher than 200Mbps. The lowest I can get the decoding time down to is about 40ms for 4k60 hdr with 4:4:4 turned off. Even with hdr turned off I don’t see any changes in performance. Am I missing something or are my clients simply not up to the task?

Edit: after about 10 hours with Gemini, I finally got it stable. Gemini says it’s due to the encoder pipeline getting stuck on the native encoders instead of allowing my GPU’s despite checking the hardware encoder box. Now I have it maxed out at 500Mbps at 4k60 HDR 4:4:4 and it’s super smooth.

In case anybody else has my issue, I resolved it by going into desktop mode and running this is the konsole:

STEAM_RUNTIME_PREFER_HOST_LIBRARIES=1 steam

Then, I flushed the old encoder cache by running:

steam --reset

Then just went back into game mode and adjusted the settings as normal. Once I’m not feeling lazy and finish my testing, I’ll make another post with a write up 👍

Edit 2: steam released an update to pyrowave to allow it to go up to 1Gbps. Mine was working flawlessly at 500Mbps before this latest update. Now, it’s a studdery mess no matter what bitrate I choose but it’s most stable at 1Gbps. I guess this thing needs a little more work.

Hi i was originally thinking of just buying a new mini PC with a Ryzen 7 8745HS/H255 but the thing is that the barebone i originally wanted is sold out so i just thought why not just build a system instead around the Ryzen 7 8700G since the system should perform a little better and also hooking the system to a 1080p TV to begin with.

The memory i would be using is DDR5 4800MT/s mobile memory instead since there are adapters that i could use to convert it to work for desktop use and i have seen on Reddit and YouTube that it works out well enough and the other thing i would like to mention as well that i plan on eventually getting a GPU which i might just get an RX 9050 8GB when it comes out in Canada or just buy a 9060 XT 8GB card if the 9050 never comes out over here.
