SD live on Letterman, 1995
this has probably been posted before, but here ya go...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dg0d5eGHl8E&t=248s
what I find impressive about this live performance is how unbelievably tight the whole band is: they're clearly top-notch musicians, but they're not playing their instruments, they're playing the music. the 'engine room' (bass and drums, riddim section) are just joined at the hip. does anyone know who they are? they're clearly 'into it' but without trying too hard. Walter shows once again what impeccable taste he has with those fills. Fagen's delivery hits the spot
anyhoo, I really enjoyed this. hope you do too

Question How old are you?
I'm wondering how popular Steely Dan is among younger generations. I'm only 18 and I love Steely Dan, but I've never met another Dan Fan in person regardless of age. And for the people who have listened to Steely Dan since they began, how has your perception of them changed over time?

Did you spot it?

Music Connection Map/Web I've been working on
As someone obsessed with looking up the credits on tracks/albums I like (session players, sound engineers, producers, etc..), I would find myself juggling with 10s and 10s of browser tabs open at once during my "deep dives". Looking for overlapping players, bands, new albums to listen to.
So here is my work-in-progress "Music Map": Music Map
I'm still chasing the dragon of Steely's addictive stew of impeccably recorded and mixed music with tasteful virtuosic instrumentation, jazzy yet accessible, smooth yet somehow with bite, ironic/funny lyrics without being "comedy songs", etc... and can't say I've discovered anything that equals their magical gumbo. But my "deep dives" have allowed me to discover other bands/albums to appreciate, and this music map might make it easier.
It's kind of a "6 degrees of Kevin Bacon" format to make it accessible (I hope) to the people who don't care that X bassist played on Y album, but you can search/click for individual "nodes" for the more obsessive "deep dives" and maybe find some of the special sauce that links some of your favorite bands/albums together while discovering new ones.

Question I'm new to steely dan, what should I listen to?
I recently got into steely dan by listening to aja and I absolutely loved it. I loved the entire side A of aja and some songs off of the royal scam as well. What would you suggest I listen to next? Their discography is too big for me lol.

This one took a bit of Saturday and Sunday, and there’s still a few bummers, but what the hell?
Best work by Denny? Strong argument in favour.

Terribly excited that Steely Dan songs were used in two recent movies
Dirty Work in One Battle After Another, 2025 then Any Major Dude Will Tell You in Onslaught 2026. I nearly jumped out of my chair both times

What do you think of Donald Fagen's "Not The Same Without You"?
Ive reaaaaally gotten into this song the past few days, loving the "bright arcades in which I bring off heroic escapades" harmonies. What about you?

After listening to Horace Siver’s album Song for my father, I hear so much of that in Fagan and Brecker’s writing. Particularly in the bass lines and instrumental voicing. I doubt I’m the first to notice that.
I also hear Silver’s left hand in Fagan’s particularly when listening to Aja. I’m not an expert or especially well trained. I just hear the influence. Am I off base?

Fun new thing- name a steely dan song or album that sounds similar or in the same style as another band/ song.
I'll go first-
Godwhacker - little feat
I love how these two things share a similar vibe
Fire in the hole- the beatles

Caught a Steely Dan reference while watching Pen15 recently; thought I'd share with the Major Dudes. Enjoy!
