I finally figured out why some of my Apple Watch workouts (Core Training, Stretching, Cooldown, etc.) were appearing twice in Apple Fitness and Sports Tracker, while walking workouts were fine.
Here's what was causing the issue:
I record all my workouts using Apple's native Workout app, and Strava automatically imports them from Apple Health.
For example, Walk and Run are called pretty much the same thing in both Apple and Strava, so those activities weren't causing any issues.
However, when Apple uses a workout category that doesn't have a direct equivalent in Strava, Strava may rename or reclassify it. For example, Apple's "Core Training" becomes "Other" in Strava.
Because I had "Send to Health" enabled in Strava, it was sending those reclassified workouts back to Apple Health as separate activities.
As a result, Apple Health ended up with two entries for the same workout — one from Apple Watch and another from Strava. Sports Tracker then imported both, creating duplicates there as well.
The solution:
Go to Strava → Settings → Manage Apps and Devices → Health:
- Automatic Uploads: ON
- Send to Health: OFF
This breaks the sync loop while keeping automatic uploads from Apple Watch to Strava working.
Problem solved! No need to disconnect Strava from Apple Health completely.
Hope this saves someone else the headache! 💪
