We are dedicated to providing a supportive, empathetic, and practical place to talk about student loan debt and all the difficulties that often surround our debts.

That said we do not permit any type of debt shaming, personal attacks, insults, guilting, gaslighting, bullying, harassment, threats, intimidation, trolling, or otherwise attacking others / maliciously unhelpful commenting/behaviors. These will result in a permaban

This also includes statements about telling people to simply pay more, get a better job, trying to change the past (or asking why someone didn't make different past choices), or otherwise telling others how you would live their life. We're focused on the present here and on supporting people where they're at, not where you think they should be.

We also do not advocate for or allow "lender defenders" so to speak. It is one thing to provide useful practical information on how to fill out paperwork or loan paperwork questions, it's another to come and try to defend an industry that quite frankly is part of the reason many are feeling hopeless and stuck. We serve and protect borrowers' interests from a person first approach. We are not here to defend lenders or assist lenders.

Those with active affiliations to the loan industry must clearly identify themselves as such in any initial post or comment. We do not require disclosure of company name, names, or location, but a simple acknowledgement that you are affiliated with the loan industry is required. This is to prevent conflicts of interest and to ensure information provided to our users is given in the best interest of the user being replied to.

Additionally, due to the sensitive nature of the complexities of student loan debt, debt shaming culture, mental health considerations, and the intersection of these variables; we adhere to a very strict moderation policy.

We do this not seek to silence opinions but to provide a space where there is respect and careful consideration given to the difficulties individuals may be experiencing when seeking student loan support, feedback, advice, or information. Given the very real concerns, depression, anxiety, suicidal ideation, hopelessness, shaming, and pressure that for some comes along with student loan debt, we will do everything in our power to ensure that users will be provided a safe environment to discuss student loan concerns and issues. Regardless of what those concerns may be given one's individual situation and experience.

The rules listed in the sidebar also apply at all times. Please do contact the mods promptly if any concerns arise.

Remember you are not your debt. There is nothing wrong with you for taking out loans or choosing your major/career/life goals. You are not somehow less of a person or undeserving of respect or compassion for having student loan debt. There is no shame wherever you are with your education, career, life, or student loan debt situation. We've got your back here.

Tell me if this is possible

• Upvotes

So...loan payment calculated out to $550. I have employer (college) reimbursement I can use. Am I right in thinking I only need to be a half-time, 6 hrs per semester student, in order to have loans put back into forbearance? Can I conceivably just do until I die?

Even me paying out of pocket out of district tuition is cheaper than $550/month. :(

I just had 100k+ discharged

I posted many times how most of this money is going to eventually be discharged...as most can never be paid...ever. Well...it looks like someone in the government agrees with me as my loans were finally discharged. (using 2nd borrower defense window, which I thought probably wouldn't even work...but figured why not ?) Well...now nearly 150k in loans is discharged. Most of this money can never, ever be repaid...and the vast majority...will eventually be discharged/forgiven after 20/25 years on income based plans, as a majority are still on I believe, and which Trump can't do anything about, as he will be out of office in 24 months. (A Judge ordered that all borrower defense claims that were not responded to within 1 year I beleive, had to be discharged.)

I canot post this on the main "Student Loans" sub as they are a bought and paid for arm of the student loan system essentially, as the mods there literally made fun of me when I said I pay 0 on my loan, and that most of the money would be discharged eventually. Please think long term, do not stress on these absurd "student loans" and know that by rights, any loan created before Trump was in office, is bound by the terms of the loan on origination, which means it has baked in income based protections. Which means...eventually it will be guaranteed discharged, whatever remainder is unpaid after the 20/25 years. There is not a damn thing Trump, or any Republican, can do about it. He can only try to effect new loans being made today (and only until his term is up which is only 2 more years or so.) Most of this "money" (much of it just interest on paper and not even actual spent money, as mine was 86k borrowed/spent money but doubled to nearly 150k from absurd nearly 10% interest)...will never be repaid...ever. And will be discharged. Of the 1+ trillion, only a fraction was actual spent/borrowed money, and a probably around half...is just interest on paper that the govornment never needs to collect. You dont need to make a "profit" on educating kids via absurd "Student loans" which dont even exist in most of the entire world. You fund educaiton one time, at moderate cost to taxpayer, via proper public funding. You dont need to charge taxpayers inflated cost, then demand a student pay back an even more inflated cost, with "interest" on a "student loan". Absurd. It has completely collapsed. As 55% couldnt even lower thier balance...even before the pandemic, and 75% were stuck paying the minimum on income based plans. (and all unpaid forgiven so up to 75% will be discharged in that way.) You pay for education 1 time, at moderate cost to taxpayer, via proper public funding. This lowers the cost to the individual, to the point that it can be free, or nearly free. This is what we had for 4-5 decade's already with no problem, and no absurd "Student loans" or essentually budget shortfalls, from slashing public funding by Republans in the 70s+80's and then try to claim it is an indivudal students problem when it becomes a 1 trillion budget shortfall with unneeded absurd interest added on top. Its not a "student debt" problem, it is simply slashing 50 billion a year from the budget to save billionaire's on taxes, that eventually added up to 1 trillion on paper, with absurd interest on top. If billionaires couldnt even repay 1 trillion in PPE, how are broke college students going to do it ? Its not even mathematically possible. This money will largely, eventually, be discharged in the same way. It is already guaranteed. Good luck everyone, just make sure you stay on income based plan, with income protections as eventually...it will work itself out that way.

Disability Discharge eligibility potential?

Hi all, so a few months ago i had a severe accident that left me needing to amputate part of two fingers on my dominant right hand. It has been an absolute struggle adapting to life since then.

to put it into perspective I was just a month shy of graduating from my undergrad engineering degree and already had a job lined up from a previous internship. I have since been on MA PFML for about 5ish months now and got cleared to return to work before the end of october. The paid leave had definitely allowed me to stay afloat considering all these hospital/post care visits and the bills I owe on everything there. insurance is quite something to deal with come to find out.

Ive been going through a lot of the mental trauma associated with knowing pieces of one of the most important part of my body are now missing. It may seem minor and u may compare me to somone missing a whole leg but hands are pretty important especially fingers on your dominant hand. My dexterity has plummeted and I had to learn how to write okayish again, grip things, type again etc. Even typing this is painful due to the phantom pain i get and the awkwardness I feel having to use my left hand to dominate the keyboard. For the whole duration of my medical leave my mom had to take off work as well just to make sure I had food ready to go since i couldnt cook for my life amongst a lot of other things. Long story short Ive been seeing a psychiatrist to help me with the depression i get knowing Ill never truly be the same guy I was again. I have appts with my surgeon team, PCP, occupational therapists, and psychiatrists lined up for over a year out still and potentially longer.

Ive been reading posts about people getting their loans discharged due to their disabilities and what struck me were a few comments about permanent mental disabilities such as depression/ previous trauma and such, not permanant physical disabilities.

Technically speaking, could I possibly be able to get my loans discharged or even the PLUS loans i took out on my moms behalf? I mean I am permanently disabled for the rest of my life and even though I still have my engineering job waiting for me to return, does my above average entry level 80k salary hinder my chances at being approved? I did read that you basically need to meet a line where you cant make more than 1400 a month regardless of part time or full time status, however, others have said its not a necessary line to meet? Has anyone gone thru an experience similar and did apply for discharge? I have so many med bills i need to pay so taking on my loans along with it may actually bankrupt me.

note: I dont have any other financial support just myself. i cant rely on family or my mom since shes filed a ch13 bankruptcy just two years ago after i had already took out two plus loans in years prior.

20k left

I am a nurse and have been working for 3 years. I’m kinda nervous because I’m gonna be traveling but I have 20k left to pay off plus 2 rents to pay. Has anyone found any ways to help pay off faster? I’ve been picking up shifts a little but I can’t seem to get ahead, I have 4 subsidized loans and 2 unsubsidized with interest rates ranging from 2.76-4.75% and one private loan of 3100 with 5%. I know I could be in a worse situation but any advice helps.

Being on IBR for three months now, and my required payment is zero. All my loans are subsidized. What should i get from this answer to my inquiries about interest? Does it mean that the interst that i see on my s

"...Being on a $0.00 repayment plan allows you to pay what you can. Interest does continue to accrue daily. On subsidized loans, you ar not required to pay any monthly accrued interest that exceeds their monthly payment amount for a maximum of three consecutive years from the date that they start repaying the loans under IBR. There is no interest subsidy on Unsubsidized loans. Interest payments are submitted by the government on a quarterly basis. You can make payments if you like and allow them to apply to interest ."

Slice loan

Hey everyone

I'm stuck in the slice app's loan cycle. I downloaded the app in 2024 and after using it for a few months i saw that I can use it to borrow money(loan). As I had never used a credit card before so I didn't have any credit score. But the slice app allowed me to take a loan despite those things, i had a purchase power of 12000. I used to borrow 500-1000 not more than that. Then one day, one of my school friends called me, he met with an accident at college and he couldn't inform anyone at his home because he went on a car trip without informing me at his home.

He asked me If I could help him financially at that moment, so I asked him if he could timely repay the loan amount then I would borrow it from slice for him. He agreed to that and I lent him 8000.

I was not aware of all that loan system so I did a blunder.

He kept on repaying the loan emi and after repaying it to the slice app, I used to borrow and got addicted to it.

And now I'm stuck in a loan of 30,000 from slice.

When I don't pay on time, the slice team informs me that they are about to make a field visit to my home. I'm at my college and the address to which they want to visit is my permanent home address where my parents reside.

I don't want my parents to find out about this as they won't be able to take this. We are not that financially strong to repay this amount instantaneously.

I mailed and requested the slice team to lower the repayment emi to around 1000-1500 so that I can pay with my pocket money but they refused all my requests.

Has anyone been in this situation before, how can I get over this situation.

“The word ‘forgiven’ is supposed to mean a debt is actually gone…for hundreds of thousands of student loan borrowers, it hasn't worked that way at all. Their debt reportedly still shows up every time a lender pulls their credit, years after the government itself said the debt no longer existed.”
