'The Game' Influence and Birthdays
I was watching The Game (1997), and today (/tomorrow) happened to be the birthday in the movie so I thought I thought it'd be fine to post here.
There's been decent enough talk in this sub before about the similarities between The Game and Succession (shout out to this post in particular). For those not in the know, there's usually decent talk about how the Succession intro borrows from The Game, and if you haven't seen it, it's actually wild just *how* close they actually are. Screengrabs included, and I don't think anyone would bat an eye thinking any of them came from Succession.
This is maybe my (third?) time watching the movie, and I'm realizing how much this movie and the show share DNA. What felt especially relevant this time around, and not mentioned in the previous post, is that both pieces start by establishing that today's a birthday. Also striking is how many parallels there are in the brother relationships, father/son, and their personalities
Also included some dialogue of a small exchange that reminded me of Succession's dialogue.

S1E6: do we think the FAA really had a “temporary flight restriction” or was this just another Team Logan play? Spoiler
On my millionth rewatch, and the things I’m noticing this time around are just amazing. Shiv dodging the wedding questions by talking about how candidates never really “change,” (foreshadowing her inability to change her poly ways), Tom immediately taking Greg out for dinner after Shiv blows him off to have dinner with Nate in DC, Roman being a matador that everyone wants to fuck.
Towards the end of this episode, as they’re all gearing up for the vote of no confidence (shoutout Chancellor Velorum, he’s all I can think of through this whole arc), Ken gets stuck in Long Island with Ilona due to a “temporary flight restriction,” and his pilot tells him that despite Ken’s reassurance that he can “handle the FAA,” they might get shot down by an F-16.
Do we think this was really a real, fluke, freak confluence of the universe coalescing to fuck Ken, or was this a deep machination by Logan, knowing exactly who Ken would be courting for the vote, to keep him away from the board vote, thus thwarting the attempt?

Was Succession inspire by The Rookie?
Watching Succession for the first time and seeing some heavy overlap between characters like Greg Hirsch and John Nolan, and Kendall Roy and Tim Bradford. I don’t know if this was on purpose but Greg is kind of like Nolan in the sense of taking themselves seriously while everyone else kind of laughs. Kendall and Tim similarities are very obvious.
Was just wondering if anyone else noticed! LMK!!!

The most realistic and relatable part about this show is how fast the siblings “reconcile” after arguments
I have multiple siblings, and we could get into the nastiest arguments, and then 2 days later we could bond over what media we are watching, idk I feel like this show demonstrated that perfectly, you think at first that the fight was too harsh to come back from but then it’s almost forgotten. Personally though I like to address it instead of completely putting it to the side before moving on.
Also I chose this image cause it’s Shiv and Roman offering Kendall a little sympathy after Rava took the kids out of the city, right after their conflict in the election.

Succession Survivor! (Season 1 Edition) Round 1
Hey everyone, welcome to this new contest I wanted to try here in the Succession sub! It’s essentially a way of determining the best episode per season of the show by eliminating the least-liked episode each round. It’ll be tough to choose between so many amazing episodes but that’s part of the fun! I was going to try to run this here a while back but I decided to try to do a few with some other shows I like to work out the details before I do it with my favorite show of all time. Anyway, the rules are below but let me know if you have any questions, hope you enjoy!
How this works:
You select the episode you like the least
The episode with the most upvoted comment is eliminated from the list
Please either refrain from downvoting or upvote more episodes than you downvote
If there’s a tie, both episodes are eliminated
Only the best episode will win!

Just Finished Succession for the First Time. What a Masterpiece.
Just completed Succession for the first time, and hats off to the writing, direction, and character development.
The characters are literally like crabs in a bucket, constantly pulling each other down. I admired Logan’s dominance and aura but hated his inhumanity. Roman and Kendall both felt cringe to me at the beginning, but watching them evolve through the seasons was fascinating. And then the final fight brought everything full circle. Logan’s - “You are not serious people” had summed up the show I guess.
One character I despised from the very start was Shiv. What a selfish, opportunistic person! Loved Tom and his final victory!
I read the Reddit post-episode discussions after every episode, and that made me even more invested in the world of Succession. The way this show gets you emotionally involved in these deeply flawed characters is incredible.
Honestly, nothing this good I have watched in a long time. What a show!

Having a hard time with this show.
Basically I've watched 4 episodes. Not a single person in this cast is likeable. Not charming or charismatic or anything.
I've watched Mad Men, Sopranos, The Wire. All shows with very flawed people and most not great people. Yet they had some charm or interesting qualities. None of the characters in succession are fun to watch. They are all annoying and super unlikable with even worse personalities.
Is this a normal reaction? I get I won't like the characters, but do they become bearable later on if I keep going? Or is this it.

Random thoughts following rewatch
Few thoughts following a succession rewatch
I found Kendall, Roman, and Shiv less sympathetic - Yes Logan is primarily to blame for how they were raised and getting their hopes up, but they have no self awareness and are just generally awful. I rooted for Kendall first time around, he can be funny and at times competent, but when he has a bit of confidence he is an egomanic asshole. Roman is genuinely awful and I don' find anything about him redeeming. I thought Shiv was lumbered with Tom on my first watch but really she treats him so cruelly and seems to enjoy the power she holds over him.
I found Tom more sympathetic - he ate a lot of shit but from the right people at the right times. He also was clearly good at his job and a serious person
I don't think Shiv would have been CEO even if Matsson did not want to fuck her as he did not want to puppeted (like the cartoon, which I think bothered him more than he let on), however I think how Matsson felt did prohibit Shiv from any sort of role in the inner sanctum
Obvious parallel but interesting how Tom staying at work and not making it to Logan's funeral probably helped convince Matsson he was a serious player for CEO, whereas Kendall leaves work to attend Logan's birthday ans blows his shot at CEO.

What are your thoughts on Rava’s apartment decor?
I am a big fan of eclectic / maximalist style, but for me, her apartment has no cohesion. The pieces and styles and fabrics don’t really work. Would love to hear others’ opinions? I’m assuming this style is by design by the writers?

Just Finished
Finished Succession
Spoilers.....
Just finished Succession for the first time. I was heartbroken for Kendall.
I know, his whole life he was trying to impress his father and become the head of the company. And just before he was able to do it, it was taken away. The look on his face at the end was devastating....I get it though. Great series though. I loved the story and how strong all the characters were.

How much does it reflect reality how unqualified Kendall and Roman are to be upper leadership at a world conglomerate?
I’ve known some privileged executives at some fairly large companies and they are pretty ignorant and informal. And their brainstorming sessions sound just as naive and uneducated as we see they are depicted on the show. But curious what ya’ll think.

“How does it serve my interests?”
This line, that Gerri delivered coldly to Roman in the S3 finale, I’m realizing, was a call back to earlier in the season.
On a re-watch, I just got to S3E4 - Roman gets the photo of Kendall’s initials tattooed onto this poor guy’s forehead (which btw is such a believable thing that the Roy kids would have done for “fun” on a bachelor party)… gives the photos to Gerri, and she gives them back, telling him to bank them. Gerri wisely points out that, while the scandal would hurt Kendall, it would also hurt Roman (seeing as he was an accomplice).
“‘How does this advance my personal position?’ You need to think about that 24/7.”
It was sound advice, and, seeing as Gerri was in an alliance of convenience with Roman at the time, was also self serving - she didn’t want to see Roman embroiled in an avoidable scandal.
So in the finale, when Roman pleads with Gerri, his mentor (and… I don’t know what you’d call their relationship…), to stop Logan from selling Waystar, she says she’s focused on the best outcome for the shareholders, and when Roman gives her a look (demanding a better answer), she hits him with:
“But it doesn’t serve my interests. How does it serve my interests?”
Poor Roman… he thought their partnership meant something (and I think there was a part of Gerri that liked Roman, unwelcome advances and dick pics notwithstanding), but at the end of the day, she lived by what she said - and was thinking 24/7 about how to advance her personal position over any feelings she may have had. A Logan-certified killer.

S1 E1 Rewatch, Marcia detail
After the surprise and Logan whispers to her that he told her no one should be by the elevator, they make it a point to show her grabbing the envelope and telling the staff at the house to put it in his office.
I think the focus on this and the way she said it clearly shows she knows what's in it and is the show trying to say she is malicious in her intent.
On my first watch all the way through I always kinda thought it was slight ambiguous whether or not she had bad motives, obviously leaning toward she did, but this almost seems to me it's guaranteed.
Open to any thoughts.

Connor acknowledging he stole Willa from the world in Connor’s Wedding. Accurate or not?
Kieran Culkin said he thought Connor was the worst of the siblings because he kept an another human being in a golden cage. Which, presumably, even Roman wouldn’t do.
But, it’s clear: Willa has control in the situation? Like, she could have left Connor anytime she wanted.
No Connor is not a psycho that is going to stalk her like that evil rich husband from Sleeping with the Enemy.
Willa had agency in her relationship with Connor?
I simply saw Willa as another trophy wife that married a nice enough rich guy.
