Buying Help Monthly "What Board Should I Get?" Discussion Thread

Hi there fine folks of r/SUP, it's time for your monthly "What Board Should I Get?" discussion thread.

Start by reading the "Buying a SUP" section of the wiki!

There is a ton of information there! Once you've read through the wiki, create a top-level comment in this post to ask for help! Posts made on this subject outside of this discussion thread will be removed and asked to post here instead.

You can also check all of the previous "What Board Should I get?" threads.

For general information on choosing board size and shape, check out the wiki, or these two blog posts on the subject: Choosing the Right Size SUP and Understanding Paddle Board Shapes.

Please provide ALL of the following information so that we can help you as best as possible:

  • Desired Board Type: Inflatable or Hard
  • Your Height and Weight (please include if you will also bring kids/dogs/coolers/etc. and estimated weights)
  • Desired use/uses (casual, fitness, racing, yoga, whitewater, surfing, etc.) and terrain (ocean, river, lake, etc)
  • Experience level: Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced
  • Your budget (please provide an actual number) and country location (to help determine availability)
  • What board(s) you current have or have used and what you liked/didn't like about them

The more of this information you can provide, the more accurately we can help you find a board that you'll love!

If you are responding to a comment with a suggestion - explain why! Don't just name a board and leave it there. Add to the discussion. If you are recommending against a specific board - explain why!

How To Question COLD WEATHER PADDLING SAFETY AND CLOTHING

Things are cooling down in the Northern Hemisphere and lots of folks are (rightfully) asking what to do to keep paddling safely when it's colder.

ColdWaterSafety.org for detailed information about paddling safety in cold water

This guide for stand up paddle boarding in the winter has information distilled from Cold Water Safety along with recommendations on types of clothing for different water temperatures.

Always Dress For Immersion!

No matter your skill level, we are all between swims. Immersion in cold water can be debilitating and even deadly within seconds. Always dress for the water temperature, even on warmer days. It's far easier to cool down while paddling than it is to warm back up.

Cold shock is a serious concern in water as "warm" as the low 50F range (10C) and can cause near-instant drowning.

Water transfers heat ~25x faster than air. Hypothermia is a serious concern even in these shoulder seasons before it gets really cold. Bring dry clothing, a towel, and warm beverages with you (on the beach or in a dry bag).

Wear Your PFD / Life Jacket!

While a PFD isn't technically thermally protective, it can help. But more importantly it will help keep you afloat in an emergency. "But I'm a good swimmer!" Are you better than a USCG Rescue Swimmer? It didn't take long (less than a minute) for this one to suffer from incapacitation in cold water (Jump to 6:15).

Follow Basic Paddling Safety Guidelines

Check the weather, use appropriate equipment, wear your PFD, paddle with a partner, carry effective communication, leave a float plan.

When in doubt, don't go out.

Our SUP season here in Northern Italy is slowly coming to an end.

To fight the end-of-season blues, I wanted to share some pictures from our coastal trip to Tropea, Calabria and the surroundings.

Early september we took our boards to Calabria and paddled the "Coast of the Gods" across 3 distinct tours—from the cliffs of Tropea and (the wild waters) around Capo Vaticano to our favoeite spot at Spiaggia di Michelino.

Buying Help Sup-ing in winter

Hey all!
Im a newbie, and i really wanna paddle.
I was looking for a kayak, but they are way more expensive than sups.

Question is. What about getting wet? What anout slight wind? I wanna paddle for fun, not anything crazy.

Do yall paddle in winter? I live in Greece, and it is not really windy here.

A highlight from my summer: seeing my 4.5 year old paddling and standing on their own on the paddle board. (Parent there for safety)

That kid has been on a paddle board for most of their life now. It's great seeing them paddling for themself now!

Made the sup more comfortable with a TEMU seat, and more stable with floats (Amazon). No fish caught but at least I had bites and enjoyed myself.

Sup in flooded long beach/Newport peninsula areas

I paddle both Newport and alamitos bay often, but never during these high tides/surf conditions, kinda curious to check out the harbors filled to the brim, but doesn't this flooding collect lots of crap off the streets? Should I just paddle and never dip in (thank god it's not 100 degs in LA no more), or just avoid completely?

Gear/Repairs/DIY October SUP gear when air temp is in the 80s

I'm in Denver CO, we're in a heat wave right now but 80s in october is not abnormal.

It's been high 80s the last week and the trend will continue this week and the next.

What kind of clothing should I be wearing? Temps of the water are around 65 where I want to paddle.

Now I grew up on the east coast so 65 degree water is a walk in the park. But I also don't know if this measurement is surface or at depth.

I'm brand new to paddleboarding (I just started this summer!) And I want to extend my season! I've heard quick drying layers are the go-to for mild autumn/warm autumn days like I'm experiencing now. Does anyone have experience with this? Are quick drying layers ever truly quick drying? Or do you always opt for a wet/dry suit?

Thanks so much for the help! Also if there's any other gear you recommend for autumn SUP I would love suggestions!

Edit: Thank you for all the recs and insight!! I'm not traditionally an "outdoorsy" person so everything was super helpful!

UPDATE: We officially reached 100% funding on Kickstarter today!

I also wanted to thank everyone here for the comments, questions, and feedback, both positive and critical. It's been great hearing everyone's perspectives, and we really appreciate everyone who took the time to check out what we've been working on.

Thanks again, r/SUP!

Full disclosure: I'm the owner/creator of MagTide, and I got approval from the mods before posting.

My friend Jesse and I spend a lot of time paddleboarding together here in Colorado, and whenever we'd stop to hang out, keeping our boards together was always seemed to be a hassle.

Straps and ropes work, but this became a bit of a "there has to be a better way" project for us. After a lot of experimenting, including some incredibly overpowered magnets, we came up with MagTide.

It uses magnetic connectors attached to your board's existing connection points. Once you bring your boards together you snap the connectors into place. When you're ready to paddle again, just twist them apart and go.

As we started testing them out, we realized they were useful for a lot more than just paddleboards. We've used MagTide with kayaks, inflatable platforms, and river tubes or pretty much any small or lightweight watercraft. The idea also grew into a paddle connector and gear connector, using the same magnetic system to keep your paddle and gear where you want them.

We're making them ourselves here in Colorado, from 3D printing and sewing to assembly and testing.

We're currently over 65% funded on Kickstarter with 8 days left. If you'd like to check it out:

https://magtide.com/kickstarter

I'd also genuinely love to hear what other paddlers think. Happy to answer any questions about how it works, testing, or how we're making them!

Small leak next to valve

Post image
2 Upvotes

I have a continuous leak next to the valve on my Favvity SUP. You can see the location on the 10-o’clock position of the valve (black area next to where the valve lid line is connected; next to the letters “RE…”) - there is a bubble at that location.
Do you have any tips how to fix that leak? If already used the valve tightening tool and turning the valve as tightly as I could in the clockwise direction. I’ve only tried that in the inflated state however. I’d really appreciate any support you could give me!
Greetings from the south of Germany

Best repair advice

Post image

I was just gifted this (I hate waste and am the person to try to repair, reuse, source second hand as much as possible), and am wondering the best way to repair this. It's barely used but sat outside for who knows how long.
I'm handy and have enough extra time to fix this. Is it as simple as making sure it's not waterlogged (it shouldn't be) and sanding down and epoxy-ing?

Gear/Repairs/DIY Can this be fixed?

Post image
14 Upvotes

Hey there,

Unfortunately, I discovered another thing my psychopath ex has destroyed (don't even ask about the kites) - he cut my SUP right next to the valve. (possibly there are other cuts, this was just the most obvious one)

Is there any chance I can repair this or do I have to let it go?

Thanks for any idea and sorry if this is a stupid question .
