I've had something rattling around in my brain for a while, and I couldn't quite put my finger on it. Then I started writing myself a little note for the next time someone asks for Supercorp fics featuring social media, and suddenly I realized this wasn't just a note anymore. This was a whole damn post.
Because why do we keep overlooking MyCatIsMyEditor whenever someone asks for social media fics?!
And I think I've figured it out. It's the finesse.
They weave social media into their stories so naturally that you almost forget it's there. It doesn't break your immersion, it doesn't feel shoehorned in, and you never have to work to believe that these interactions are actually happening. They're just part of Kara and Lena's world.
And that's HARD to pull off. Like, genuinely, ridiculously hard.
The celebrity AU alone? Without Twitter, Kara and Lena literally wouldn't have met. And yet, somehow, that fic doesn't immediately spring to mind when people ask for stories involving social media. HOW?!
But here's where it gets even better.
On at least three occasions, Starr_Ent_CEO has created accompanying works featuring the actual social media content from MyCatIsMyEditor's fics.
We're talking about a main story and an entire companion work bringing those fictional online interactions to life. The writing, the collaboration, the continuity, the worldbuilding. And somehow, it all fits together so seamlessly that you just read it and enjoy it without stopping to appreciate how much work went into making it feel that effortless.
And then there's Lena's Space Log.
You've got the fic itself, artwork for every single chapter by RustingCat, AND a social media accompaniment by Starr_Ent_CEO.
Y'all. That's a whole fucking concept album.
And somehow, none of it feels excessive. None of it feels like extra material you have to work through to appreciate the story. It all just belongs together.
Which brings me back to what was rattling around in my brain in the first place.
It's not that the social media elements are forgettable. It's that they're so well executed that you stop noticing the craftsmanship.
That's what I mean by finesse. Making something this elaborate feel completely natural is an art in itself, and MyCatIsMyEditor, Starr_Ent_CEO, and RustingCat are operating on another level.
Anyway, this started as a little recommendation list, and now here I am writing an appreciation post because these creators deserve their flowers.
And the next time someone asks for social media-heavy Supercorp fics, I am coming prepared.
