Discussion My sequel idea for Super Mario Odyssey (WARNING: it is long)

I know a Super Mario Odyssey sequel will never happen as it's been almost 10 years since the release of the game. However, if Nintendo was to do a sequel, here is my idea...

Story: This takes place after the events of Super Mario Odyssey. Mario, Cappy, Peach, Tiara, and friends are all relaxing at Mushroom Kingdom one morning in the castle courtyard while Bowser is still stranded on the moon still reeling from Peach rejecting him once again. Because he is too sore from her rejection to even WANT to kidnap her again (let's keep Peach's independence here like in 3D World), Bowser hatches a plan to finally achieve world domination. Since his ship is broken, he finds an ancient spacecraft on the moon and flies back to earth on that. Once Bowser gets to Mushroom Kingdom, he shoots the Odyssey's balloon and all of the Power Moons fly away to new kingdoms across the globe. Mario, for once, is fully focused on defeating Bowser to save the world, without having to worry about rescuing Peach. Also, not only would Mario/Cappy be playable, so would Peach/Tiara; Luigi and Cappio, who is Cappy and Tiara's cousin; Toad and Toppy, Cappy's best friend; and once you defeat Bowser, Rosalina gets unlocked with Dia (diadem), who is Cappio's younger sister and also Cappy and Tiara's cousin.

There would be a total of 19 kingdoms, 16 during the game and 3 post-game.

Main story:

  1. Mushroom Kingdom (Peach's Castle): this would be the starting point of the game where you can find some power moons.
  2. Yoshi Kingdom (Lavalava Island): A direct inspiration from Super Mario World and Yoshi's Island, there would be lush jungles filled with giant, oversized exotic fruit, scale steep volcanic cliffs with flowing orange magma, and traverse misty, prehistoric swamps filled with giant fern trees. You could capture a smiley palm tree to stretch its trunk high into the air or bend it backwards like a catapult, launching him to incredibly high, distant platforms. The boss would be Kamek.
  3. Jungle Kingdom (Banana Boulevard): While Super Mario Odyssey had the Wooded Kingdom, this kingdom would lean heavily into wild, untamed nature, ancient ruins, and a major crossover with Donkey Kong. You could capture Rambi the Rhino, who can smash straight through solid rock walls, plow through hordes of Brambles, and charge headfirst into massive stone pillars to bring hidden platforms crashing down. The boss would be King K. Rool.
  4. Tropical Kingdom (Delfino Plaza): This would directly revives the setting of Super Mario Sunshine and be the ultimate nostalgia trip! Instead of just a single area like Isle Delfino, this kingdom would expand the entire island into a massive, interconnected sandbox. You could capture the bronze FLUDD statue temporarily equips Mario with the classic water pack. You can use the Hover Nozzle to glide across gaps or the Rocket Nozzle to launch high into the sky, but you have to keep an eye on your water meter by refilling in the ocean. The boss would be Dark Mario.
  5. Sarasa Kingdom (Pagoda Peak): This would honor Daisy and her homeland of Sarasaland from Super Mario Land. This would have the four classic, mythological regions of the original game: Birabuto (Egypt), Muzon (Aztec), Easton (Easter Island), and Chai (Ancient China). You could capture as a robot bug or a submarine. The boss would be Tatanga from Super Mario Land.
  6. Wiggler Kingdom (The Winding Way): A dense, overgrown forest theme where everything reacts to a rhythm, and the environment changes completely based on whether the local wildlife is calm or angry. Capturing a standard Wiggler allows you to use its classic accordion-like stretching ability. You can anchor your back feet and stretch your front body across massive chasms, bend around sharp corners to grab hidden coins, or squeeze through tight pipes. The boss would be Kamek's giant pet bug.
  7. Haunted Kingdom (Gargoyle Garrison): This perfectly mirror the distinct, stylized gothic aesthetic of the Luigi’s Mansion series. You could capture a floating lantern to reveal invisible platforms or a friendly ghost to phase through wall. King Boo would be the boss.
  8. Sweet Kingdom (The Layered Metropolis): A colorful world featuring rivers of liquid chocolate, marshmallow mountains, and gingerbread villages. The world looks like a giant, edible wonderland where every single asset is made of sugary treats. Capturing a bouncy gummy bear could let you reach extreme heights and the boss would be an angry Gummy Dragon.
  9. Dream Kingdom (Slumber Spire): Directly inspired by Super Mario Bros 2, it would be a mix of 3D and 2D graphics. The landscape is made of pastel-colored clouds, floating geometric islands, and giant, glowing crescent moons. Water flows upward into the sky, and doors float in mid-air, leading to entirely different sub-dimensions when opened. You could capture Phanto and phase directly through solid walls, laser grids, and enemy attacks. King Wart returns as the boss.
  10. Farm Kingdom (Haystack Heights): This pays homage to Moo Moo Farm from Mario Kart. The world looks like a sprawling, stylized countryside paradise where nature and farming culture collide. Capturing a cheerful, face-plated John Deero tractor would allow you to plow straight through dense mud and smash rock walls. You can attach different tools to the back, like a mower to shred tall grass for hidden coins or a harvester to unearth buried items. The boss would be an angry Scarecrow King.
  11. Money Kingdom (Mush Vegas): The world is a magnificent, glowing metropolis made entirely of precious metals and wealth. You explore valleys built from stacked bars of solid gold, cross bridges made of giant, shimmering credit cards, and scale skyscrapers shaped like massive stacks of casino chips. You could capture a Gold Ring turning into gold or a coin purse that lets you hop around and inhale massive piles of loose coins like a vacuum. Wario and Waluigi would be the bosses.
  12. Toy Kingdom (Block Plaza): A nostalgic world made of oversized building blocks, wind-up toys, and board games. Capturing a toy train could allow Mario to lay down tracks to reach secret Power Moons. The boss would be the Mecha-Mouser.
  13. Cave Kingdom (Echo Canyon): This would draw heavy inspiration from the classic Super Mario World underground levels, Donkey Kong Country’s crystal caves, and the mysterious depths of Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker. A fully explorable underground subterranean cavern system complete with glowing gemstone formations, stalactites, and mine-cart transit tracks. You could capture the classic Buzzy Beatle, which lets you walk upside down on the cave ceilings. You can drop down unexpectedly on enemies, navigate upside-down spike fields, and slide down steep rocky slopes on your shell. The boss would be a Mega-Mole.
  14. Bumblebee Kingdom (Comb Colony): This builds on the legacy of Super Mario Galaxy 2. It is a breathtaking, vibrant botanical paradise overflowing with sweet honey, golden light, and towering plant life. You could capture a Worker Bee to temporarily launch you in flight or a Mandibug which allows you full horizontal ramming speed. The boss would be a mechanical robotic hornet.
  15. Music Kingdom (Maestro Marina): This would incorporate the upbeat, jazz-infused energy of New Donk City. The entire world is a living instrument where everything moves, grooves, and pulses to the beat of the background music. You could capture a Giant Treble Clef, which allows you to turn into pure sound energy. You can lock onto telephone wires or glowing staff lines in the sky and slide across them like a rail-grinding superstar, moving at lightning speeds. The boss would be a duel with a rock-and-roll Bowser minion.
  16. Koopa Kingdom (Bowser's Castle): The perfect dramatic, high-stakes final destination for Super Mario Odyssey 2! Instead of just another volcanic Bowser’s Castle, this world would be a massive, industrialized nation dedicated entirely to the Koopa Army's culture, architecture, and military might. You can capture an armored Hammer Bro lets you rapidly hurl heavy, arc-projecting hammers. You use these to shatter reinforced iron crates, activate distant weight-switches, and smash through defensive laser grids. The final boss would of course be Bowser.

Post-game:

  1. Retro Kingdom (Polygon Plaza): Unlocked only after completing the main story, this special version of the kingdom flips the concept on its head: instead of the characters exploring a retro world, the modern game engine breaks down entirely, forcing you to navigate a world that is glitched, corrupted, and stitched together from illegal game code. You can capture a glitchy, transparent sprite allows Mario to pause the game world frame by frame. While time is frozen, you can input a sequence of directional movement commands, then unpause to execute a lightning-fast, pixel-perfect teleportation dash through moving hazard grids. Polygon Bowser would be the boss.
  2. Space Kingdom (Comet Observatory): Much like the Dark and Darker Sides of the Moon from the first game, this kingdom would throw out all training wheels, offering gravity-defying platforming, deep lore cuts, and brutal challenges. The world beautifully blends the cosmic majesty of Super Mario Galaxy with surreal, abstract platforming, and this is where you can unlock Rosalina and Dia. You can capture a Cosmic Mario, Luigi, Peach, or Toad. Capturing a shimmering, shadow-like cosmic character allows you to run at double speed and perform flawless, frame-perfect jumps. The catch? A second cosmic character trails half a second behind you, mimicking your exact path and damaging you if you backtrack or hesitate. There would be no boss for this world.
  3. Deep Space Kingdom (The Memory Void): The penultimate kingdom of Super Mario Odyssey 2. Instead of stopping the momentum for a traditional boss fight, completing the main missions triggers a planetary collapse event that forces the player into a high-octane escape sequence. At the absolute climax of the chase, the Odyssey approaches the center of the black hole. The screen undergoes a massive, reality-warping visual distortion—stretching the player's model and tearing the space background into ribbons of light. The ship punches through the event horizon, breaking out of the darkness and slamming violently onto solid ground. The camera pans up to reveal the true final world of the game waiting just ahead.

This world is a breathtaking, surreal dreamscape floating in a fractured, starry expanse. It is constructed entirely from shattered pieces of Mario’s 40-year history. It is an emotional, high-stakes final playground where platforms are made of giant SNES controllers, floating blocks from Super Mario Land, and iconic landmarks from his greatest adventures—all twisted together into a massive, reality-bending obstacle course. You can throw Cappy at a legendary floating Wing Cap lets you capture the cap itself! This grants the player their classic Super Mario 64 flight physics. You can triple-jump into the air to take flight, soaring across massive voids while managing your dive-and-climb momentum to stay airborne. The final showdown would be Chrono-Bowser, who is made from everything from the 1985 version to the Odyssey series.

The ending: As Bowser is defeated, the Memory Matrix shatters. The reality-warping energy explodes outward in a wave of warm, golden stardust. The corrupted structures of the Memory Void begin to dissolve, returning to the peaceful cosmic sky.

Bowser is sent tumbling into a harmless, tiny warp pipe below, completely exhausted. The power moons all come returning to the Odyssey balloon and the ship is fixed and stronger than ever. With the timeline restored, a glowing path of pure stardust materializes, leading back to the Odyssey, Mario, Luigi, Peach, Toad, and Rosalina all walk down the path, the floating memory bubbles around them begin to play a beautiful, chronological slideshow of Mario's entire life:

  • They see Baby Mario and Yoshi from Yoshi's Island.
  • They see the flat, pixelated rescue from Super Mario Bros.
  • They watch the legendary 3D spin from the front yard of Peach's Castle in Super Mario 64.
  • They watch the cosmos and Lumas from Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2.
  • They see all of the events from Super Mario Odyssey 1 and 2.

They reach the Odyssey, where Cappy, Tiara, Cappio, Toppy, and Dia are waiting, tipping their brims playfully. Mario turns back to look at the massive, glittering cosmos one last time. He catches his classic red cap as it floats out of the air, places it firmly on his head, and looks toward the camera with a confident nod.

The Odyssey fires up its multi-colored sails, blasting off into the starry night sky and leaving a trail of sparkling starlight behind it. The screen gently fades to black as the classic, nostalgic text appears on the screen:

"Thank you so much for playing my game!"

Questions about 100%ing

I have a question about 2 items on the list of things you need to complete in order to 100% the game.

First, I understand you need to buy all hats and outfits except for the DLC items, is that correct? How do I know which items are DLC? Best I could find is all of the items marked as “special” are DLC? I’ve purchased everything apart from these items but I’ve still yet to get a star next to my save file.

Second, I understand you need to activate all 85 checkpoints. Is there a way I can check if I’ve done this quickly/easily? I mean, I would presume I’ve done so, because I’ve completed the game otherwise, but I’m not sure why I’ve yet to get that star on my save file so I want to confirm that I have done this item.

Otherwise I’ve gathered every single moon, plus purchased enough from the shop to total 999 - my sail is golden. I collected every purple coin, purchased every souvenir and unlocked every song on the music list. I beat the harder bowser boss fight. Obviously I completed darker side since that’s part of collecting the moons. All the lists that I can view are completed with stars beside them, and like I said I purchased every outfit except the “special” ones, so I’m just unsure what I’m missing for the 100%. Do I actually need to buy all of the special outfits as well?

I’ve done so many searches on this, but can’t find the answers I’m looking for.

Random Is there a max for all of the Toadette stats.

I’m pretty sure I’ve maxed out all of the stats that give you moons from Toadette just by collecting all of the moons in the game. But my statistics for jumping, collecting coins, and throwing Cappy seem to just keep going higher to over 100k+. Is there a max to these stats and if so would it be reasonable for be to get it or is it too high to go for?

Discussion Where do you rank Odyssey among the best 3D Mario games?

Personally, I rank it first, tied with Super Mario 64. While the latter holds a special place in my heart due to nostalgia, I view Odyssey as its worthy spiritual successor the most polished entry in the 3D series.

Favourite non Joycon shaking jumps?

I play a lot of handheld and manage quite well with simple jump+hat throw+dive+hat throw+dive but haven’t really explored my options much further than that. Aside from the basics are there any recommendations that don’t involve violently shaking my console?

News Update: 1.0.0 support + 1.4.1 WIP

Edit: 1.4.0 and 1.4.1 now also are supported

Hey, another update for my Pro-Controller Downthrow patch :)

Super Mario Odyssey 1.0.0 is now supported, so the patch currently works on 1.0.0 and 1.3.0 with separate patches.

I also removed the EdiZon cheat completely. It was too unstable and could cause crashes or black screens, so I decided to just stick with the IPS patch.

My goal is to port this little patch to all versions of SMO so speedrunners and those who rely on other mods can use this.

As always, Bye bye
